I see a pattern of the numbers 4 and 7 :D

Tivo related question to Alibi move. Will it pick up the move of +1 ?
( I have records set on this) Hence the reason I like +1 channels !

Yes it will. This is one of the nice things about Tivo and something that I do not think either the V+ or Sky+ do.

ETA:

To clarify... any SLs on the original, SD, channel or it's +1 will be fine. You will, of course, have to manually re-create any SLs if you want them on the HD variant.

I agree with the poster on here who said it would be nice to watch Rizzoli and Isles in HD. Not sure whether it is Angie Harmon or Sasha Alexander I am looking forward to seeing in HD more.

Thank you can not say that HD is of any interest to me. TV is only 32" so really can not see the difference.
The Fact That TiVo can do this is a plus point, which makes a change ! However if you know ( and thats a BIG if) its no a real problem :p:

Mine's only a 37" and I can tell the difference; even with my bad eyesight!

Not that I care much myself either. I wouldn't not watch something just because it wasn't in HD :)

His TV only needs to be HD ready for HDTV on VM - as nothing is broadcast in 1080p from VM. At least the last time I checked.

Of course that's only for TV.

Thanks.

Right now the TiVo has 6 streams and the stream from BBC 1.

It down to BBC I think.

In 2013 it will only be ONE stream for viewers not using TiVo.

Ok then thanks. So I guess its VM who are choosing to only show 4 streams via the V+HD box is it? when you are still receiving 6 via TiVo.

Sky are only broadcasting 4 streams as well.

Info from BBC Sports web site:

And the BBC Red Button will offer an alternative match on Freeview, up to four streams on Satellite, Cable and Freesat, plus a highlights service and replays of Today at Wimbledon.

Some things you can see the difference between HD and SD. Golf for instance, you can all the contours on the course. And wildlife programmes are great in HD as well.

You will need to ask an Virgin worker that.

But I do know that BBC are cutting the Red Button streams on Virgin (For viewers not on TiVo) and Sky down to one stream soon - After August 10th.

The BBC choose what to show. It is their application and their streams.

It appears they will be using the two remaining streams for other sports from tomorrow.

Of course that's only for TV.

Not completely correct HD Ready is anything has a resolution of 1280x720.

Full HD is 1920x1080 all HD broadcast on Sky and Virgin is in 1920x1080 althoght some channels may broadcast at a slightly lower res to skimp on bandwidth cost the output to your TV is still 1920x1080. And your Tv will deinterlace the signal for you.

Hi Zantarous, query, if Sky do broadcast in FULL HD are there any tv shows (i.e. Sky 1 HD... Mad dogs for example) available on Blu-Ray? Secondly, is 1920x1080not progressive as apposed to interlaced?

Not completely correct ;). To be classed as HD Ready a display needs to have a minimum of 720 lines, and support both 720p and 1080i inputs (and a couple of other conditions). Full HD is a widely-used but unofficial term for 1080p.

1920x1080 can be either progressive or interlaced, but all broadcasts on both Sky and VM are interlaced.

A quick search on Amazon says Mad Dogs is available on Blu-ray.

1080i is NOT full HD.

In any event a HD ready TV will show 1080i so still no need for a full HD TV for sky / VM.

1080p will show a full HD picture on the screen at once.

1080i will show half of it then the other half.

Mind you it makes no odds to me - I can's see any difference between vhs quality and blu-ray.

As far as I understand it, any reminder will also record the programme. So it's like an announced recording

This has been my point all along. Yet VM have had to waste time getting Tivo to implement this when they should have been doing something with a higher priority. (Basically anything but reminders.)

Well being someone that's got the new feature and using it this morning my initial reaction is that this a positive addition to the TiVo, I reckon most people will like it when they've used it a bit.
I can't see that it detracts in any way from the original software.

It is a huge step backwards.

I personally think that the money could could have been spent on far better things, but how is it a 'huge step backwards'?

People will get what they wanted: auto switching of the channel when their selected show starts.

All it does is pop up a reminder that it is starting, TiVo will still record it. Which I think is a waste of time but I'm guessing due to the y TiVo works is the only way they could implement it.

Running a business should be about looking after your customers wants and needs, and with this update Virgin have done that, so it can't be wasted time

If it's a pilot of the next firmware update (in full? Ben was't specific), then can anyone with the update advise what else there is in addition to reminders - I'd hate reminders to be the ONLY noticable change.......

Specifically, if anyone can test if they have enabled Multiroom Streaming that would be great :)

I believe you can now set global recording options for single recordings, series links and Wishlists, and that there are less screens in playing VoD from a Search

It's debatable as to wheather that was a small proportion of customers who moaned very loudly.

In my view, some people just get stuck in old outmoded viewing habits and won't move with the times.

That development money could have been spent on other things; for example, a way of backing up series links and Whishlists. Because, unlike with V+ or Sky boxes, series links last forever (not just for a season), you need these and whishlists protecting in case of a box failure.

Maybe we would have multiroom by now if resources hadn't been tied up in providing reminders?

Hi Ben,

Thanks for that - I appreciate MRS is down to a licencing issue and a 'How to do it in a user friendy way' - I guess i was just hoping that they would use this next update to turn it on, in much the same way they used the last update to turn the Sky PIP on, even though that was only disabled due to a licencing agreement, rather than needing any technical work to fix.

Looks like this isn't going to happen this time.

Just out of interest, do you beleive that even if the licencing is sorted, that deployment will be delayed untill the connection improvement method is decided upon - even though many of us are more that happy to use Cat5/6 cables that we already have in place?

Dont take this as having a go - i'm genuinly interested - I just cant see the logic in denying those of us that can use it today, whilst you wait for something that can help the masses tomorrow.

Regards
T

You don't need to tell me that; implementing reminders was a waste of development resources in my view. But those who wanted auto channel change for a specific show have now got that, so hopefully they will be happy.

They probably won't be as the program still gets recorded.

I think you'll find that not everyone has precisely the same methodology when watching, or recording television and that reminders, as has been discussed over and over, do suit some and not others.

'Reminders' hasn't broken or changed anything else, so the impact is zero to anyone who doesn't use them.

Apart from using limited money and time resources that could have been used to add new, rather than outdated, functionality.

It would be interesting to know just how much time and money was spent on implementing them, but I have to say, if it was expensive or time consuming, then I doubt VM would've bothered.

It's not really outdated functionality if people are using it. Technology is there to serve needs, people aren't there to adapt to technology.

Agreed, it's not a perfect implementation of a reminder system, but it does provide the auto switching that was the main point people made in regard to wanting reminders.

Presumably, it was because Tivo was never designed to have reminders that this compromise implementation happened? I'm sure they could have got it to not record the reminder, but that would have cost even more development time and money.

Yes, but we all resist changing our established ways of operating, even when the new way is better.

The V+ did need a reminder function because one of the 3 channels didn't record. People have been asking for years for the V+ to make all it's 3 tuners record, rather than just 2 out of 3. Tivo did that, and eliminated the need for reminders.

It is outdated tbh, however VM customer are used to the feature and been using it for years when there was no PVR so it was the only option and still think they need it. However they just need to update their mind set to the modern world of 3 recordable tuners ;)

People should adapt and they do, otherwise we would still be living in caves.

bamav 27-06-2012 16:26

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Even if I had 10 tuners (which may come, who knows!), I think I would still set a reminder for a live event, or even a movie, that's starting that I'm keen and available to watch.

I have a 14 week old baby, and so more and more I'm finding that time flies by when it's feeding time, so a wee reminder that something's starting (and just as importantly - that recordings won't do) and switch the channel over for me (when I'm feeding a baby and can't quite reach the remote!).

I consider myself to be very adaptable and open to technology changes, but this is one wee bit of old school tech that still has a place in today's ever increasingly developing tech world of television viewing.

People will get what they wanted: auto switching of the channel when their selected show starts.

I use reminders on the V+ to watch a programme live, when I am unable to record a programme due to all tuners being in use.

If all TiVo tuners are in use, so it is unable to record the reminded programme, will it still remind users and switch to that channel?

Itshim 27-06-2012 16:33

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

So does it "offer"
This is on do you want to record . If not do you want to switch,
Or is a case of "TiVO don`t care". This is what you get and it is "record & switch" ( now were have I heard that catchy name before). Yet again nearly there but not quite. What I wanted is - This is on in "x" minutes would you like to change at start. As simple yes or no would be great.

Is this the first time that a major(ish) HD channel (which I believe that Sky partly own) has closed down?

I'm very surprised at this, as Sky seem more interested in playing the numbers game with HD channels, rather than their individual popularity. As I believe that HD will be the norm for all channels in the future, perhaps this casts doubt on the long term future of Bio SD??

It might also suggest that Sky would rather close down an unprofitable HD channel, than try and make it profitable by letting VM have it to increase ad revenue and subscription costs.

Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face!

It does baffle me that people need to be reminded to watch live sport, but that's another issue. This update had nothing to do with cost or taking resources away from other development, it's about removing a barrier to TiVo for customers who so far haven't upgraded, because in the long term, Virgin want everybody on the new system.

Polls on this and other such forums? Those responding would be a self selecting sample and not representative of the customer base as a whole.

I personally don't know anyone who uses/ used reminders on V+
