It was kind of expected following the launch of their HD channel. If the increase is for Virgin customers too, I suspect Boxnation HD will be along fairly soon.

The question is Boxnation value for money at £12 in either HD or SD, I have no problem with the price increase long as there is least one live boxing card per week, no two week gap or more between live events!

With that price rise the HD variant will have to arrive at Virgin because if it does not then one would suspect them to lose quite a few subscribers.

Boxnation have confirmed on Twitter that Boxnation HD will not be on the Virgin Media platform from launch. Boxnation are still working on it currently. There is unconfirmed speculation, and I mean speculation, they are trying to get on UPC in Ireland as part of the negotiations.

It does seem a little unfair however my understanding is it will be in place for the start of April, if negotiations go well, just in time for the price increase.

Well l hope it is in place because why would someone pay a extra £2 for it and not even have the HD version Chad.

Boxnation are suggesting the extra £2.00 is not for the HD channel, it's to cover the increased cost of the international broadcast rights. However regardless of what the £2.00 is being used for, I think it's only fair that Virgin Media customers get access to the channel too. Boxnation have confirmed they are in talks with Virgin and have assured cable customers their HD channel is in noway exclusive to SKY. As part of their current IPO presentation Boxnation confirmed they meet with Virgin Media on a regular basis to establish joint marketing initiatives. They also highlighted Liberty Global has cable interests in Ireland.

I think Boxnation are trying to secure a new carriage deal for their channels with Virgin for both the UK and Ireland, which may be holding things up a little.

Ultimately they have confirmed they will have news soon for Virgin Media customers. How things are panning out just now are very similar to when their channel launched just over 2 years ago. I'm 99.9% certain Virgin Media customers will have the new HD channel. I'm also getting a sneaky feeling, and it's a really sneaky feeling, that there might be moves to get the channel in XL. I've got nothing to prove this but Boxnation are in the middle of a revenue drive and are looking for long term guaranteed income.

No l certainly can't at all but Virgin obviously thought they would gain more from putting BT Sports on there as there are many who would have baulked at paying a standalone subscription including our household.

It is currently not a HD version of the SD channel.

Surely all the fights that Boxnation have shown since it's launch are in HD, so can be shown in HD!

I for one want this channel in HD on VM as I am paying a premium for this channel and the HD version is at no extra cost!

Boxnation have been filming all of their own fights in HD for about the past 18 months. Frank Warren did suggest last night that more and more content will be shown in HD on the channel over the coming weeks as the schedule is padded out.

I remember at first Boxnation was only broadcast part-time for a short while before it went 24 hours. I can't remember their exact broadcasting times but I remember there was nothing on at all through the day until about 6pm.

Boxnation Tweeted the following earlier today in reply to questions about Boxnation HD on Virgin Media:

"We don't have a timescale for this, but HD on Virgin Media should be coming and we'll tweet when we know more."

I also received an e-mail from Boxnation today in regards to a few queries I raised. They confirmed the following:

"At the moment all the live events will be shown in HD on Fridays and Saturdays 19.00-23.00hrs, and on Sundays 0200-0600hrs. The long term plan is to have the BoxNation HD channel 24/7. However, HD is hugely expensive and we are providing an interim solution that allows us to broadcast all our live events in HD at the weekends for our customers to enjoy."

As far as I know this hasn't been confirmed by them anywhere else so litte bit of news is a Cable Forum exclusive :)

All things considered it's unlikely to be in XL. It may pop up for a short period in the package, like Premier Sports, but not as a full time addition. Boxing isn't for everyone, so I fully understand your stance on this one.

What's in, and out of the XL package has caused some heated debate in the Coming Soon thread in recent months. I don't think Virgin will ever be able to please everyone. I would be happy to see Boxnation in XL in place of the +1 channels etc....

Channel 5 have added another live fight in March. 3 shows on now in total.

1st March - James Degale Vs. Gevorg Khatchikian

15th March - Dean Francis Vs. Bob Ajisafe

22nd March - Kid Galahad Vs. Sergio Prado

Good news for fans of the sport who can't afford SKY Sports or Boxnation.

Live British boxing on Eurosport tonight, starts in 10 minutes.

I think Eddie Hearn might be ruling himself out. On Twitter someone Tweeted him, "Barker retires, Murray resigns from Hatton should i put 2&2 together?" Eddie replied, "Only if you want to make 5!"

Maybe Eddie is just being sly or maybe he doesn't fancy the hassle that comes with Murray. Plenty of negative stories coming out about him over the past 12 weeks or so in regards to professionalism and conduct.

Whilst SKY have Ricky Burn Vs. Terence Crawford next Saturday, Boxnation have a double header. It's Abaraham Vs. Stieglitz III followed by Chavez Jr. Vs. Vera II. On the card from the States, Lomachenko faces Solido for the world title in only his second professional bout! Can't wait!

At first I was thinking Crawford would win convincingly however the past few days have got me leaning towards Burns.

Crawford arrived in Scotland 24 hours later than expected after missing his original flight. Rumors from his camp yesterday suggesting he's struggled to get into a regular sleeping pattern and is pretty hacked off at how cold and wet it is here. He turned up at the press conference looking pretty disinterested and wouldn't engage in conversation. At times trying to get one word answers was like pulling teeth. Of course this could all be a big act however he's showing all the signs of someone that is either missing home comforts or possibly struggling with the weight.

Crawford has never had a 12 round fight, and only has 81 rounds under his belt. He's fought at a lower level than Ricky so far and has never boxed outside the States. The crowd in Glasgow will be rabid on Saturday and will generate hostility Crawford has never boxed in front of before.

If Crawford has genuinely had issues settling this week, and it's not all an act, he might just be Rickys Jeff Lacy.

Boxnation is not going up in price on the Virgin Media platform. From the 1st April the subscription goes up to £12.00 for SKY customers however the price will stay at £10.00 for those who subscribe via Virgin Media. Talks between the channel and Virgin Media are still ongoing in regards to Boxnation HD launching. It's not a case of if, it's a case of when...... which should be soon.

Boxnation also confirmed today that "We’ll never ask channel subscribers to pay-per-view. This new facility is for non-subscribers only." They're playing their cards close to their chest in regards to what their PPV plans are going forward.

Press release today regarding Boxnation:

"Boxing Channel Media Ltd., owners and operators of BoxNation, the UK-based subscription boxing channel, provides an update today following its statement to the market on December 5, 2013 regarding its plans to IPO on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange.
The Board announces that, following an approach from a significant private investment, it has decided to withdraw its current plan to IPO on AIM and is to carry out a strategic review across the Company, which will see the underlying business and management team strengthened.

Following the Board’s decision to withdraw its plans to IPO, Richard Brooke, who has been Chairman since the launch of the channel, has stepped down to focus on other business interests and will be replaced by Frank Warren, arguably Britain's best known and most successful boxing promoter over the past 30 years.
Further Board changes include Jim McMunn, formerly of Endemol Sport and Setanta Sports, who has been appointed as Managing Director of BoxNation, and George Warren, Managing Director of Queensberry Promotions, joins to become Commercial Director of BoxNation.

The Board is also delighted to announce that Bill Ives, Chairman of Rainham Steel, and one of Britain’s most successful businessmen and entrepreneurs, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Company. Alongside Bill Ives the Company also welcomes Alison Chapman, who has been Financial Director at Rainham Steel for the past 13 years, as Finance Director at the Company.
The Board will provide a further update to the market, following the ongoing strategic review, later this month.

Commenting on today’s news, Frank Warren, Chairman of Boxing Channel Media Ltd. said: “Firstly, I would like to thank Richard Brooke, who has guided BoxNation from its embryonic stage to the substantial independent subscription platform it is today. He has been a major asset to the business over the past two and-a-half years and we wish him well for the future.
“I am delighted to be appointed Chairman and I am firmly behind the shareholders’ decision to remain a private company. I am excited for BoxNation’s future and look forward to aiding its continued growth and development into one of the UK’s premium sports platforms. We have shown some of, if not the best boxing events from around the world, and the UK since our launch in 2011 and our aim is to continue in this vein whilst developing other areas of the business".

Newly appointed Managing Director of BoxNation, Jim McMunn added: “These are exciting times for BoxNation with a host of sensational events coming up.
“The channel currently has its strongest ever schedule with standout events such as; Manny Pacquiao v Timothy Bradley, Floyd Mayweather v Marcos Maidana, which also features Amir Khan and Adrien Broner, and the blockbuster heavyweight showdown between Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury in the summer.

“Our recent major investment in the HD platform and Pay-Per-View facility has been greatly received and I look forward to continuing the channel’s vision in becoming a major sports pay TV service with boxing at its heart.”

A few Tweets from Boxnation today in reply to queries about when Boxnation HD will launch on Virgin Media. Sadly it doesn't sound too positive:

"Virgin Media have been offered BoxNation in HD and we'd love to see it happen."

"Virgin have been offered BoxNation in HD and we'd love to see that happen one day."

Sounds like it's Rainham Steel that has invested in the company. Perhaps they disagreed with the timing of the IPO route which Richard Brooke was pursuing. It looks like they have recruited a professional manager, Jim McMunn, to review how the channel is run. If McMunn turns the company around, it could be worth substantially more than if it floated tomorrow.

back to the golden boy deal ive seen an interview yesterday with eddie hearn and kugan cassius on ifilm where he basically says sky have no interest in the international shows at the moment due to viewing figures so I think its guaranteed they will announce a new deal with boxnation!

Don't want to but in too much, but as suggested earlier, I'm sure it's him aka Rainham Steel. Why? If another company had invested then they would probably have joined the board of directors. Two people have joined the board - both from Rainham Steel. "Alongside Bill Ives the Company also welcomes Alison Chapman, who has been Financial Director at Rainham Steel for the past 13 years, as Finance Director at the Company."
Draw your own conclusions.

Surprisingly Eurosport have picked up the UK rights to show Klitschko Vs. Leapai on the 26th April.

Nothing else confirmed however Ricky Hatton does have a card on that night featuring European and Commonwealth title fights. Hatton was supposed to have a TV deal with Boxnation but hasn't put any shows on yet. Maybe this will turn out to be his first?

The channel has been offered to Virgin Media but no deal concluded yet. I wouldn't however blame Virgin Media for the delay. I think there is a few "demands" that Boxnation are placing on the channel.

On SKY the channel doubles up as a PPV channel. If you subscribe to Boxnation, you get to watch the Boxnation HD channel for free. If you don't subscribe, and want to watch a fight, you have to order the event in the same way as you would a SKY Box Office PPV. If you record from the channel, regardless of whether your a regular subscriber or not, you only get 7 days to watch the show before it gets auto-deleted from your SKY+ box. Alternatively if start to watch a recording, you only get 24 hours to watch the broadcast before it auto-deletes.

It's a very strange set up. It's not really a full time HD channel. Even if you are a subscriber you have to make a dummy purchase for £0.00 to record from the channel. It's all very complex. Boxnation themselves acknowledge this.

I'm sure Boxnation want to launch the channel in the same way on Virgin Media. It's likely Virgin can't be doing with the technical fannying around involved.

Question for those in the know.

My brother has just added Boxnation through Virgin Media for this weekends Mayweather fight. He only wants the channel for 1 month / 30 days. When would be the best time for him to cancel the channel with Virgin to avoid being billed a second month? Does he have to give 30 days notice?

Thanks in advance

The way Cable work is:

Your brother will need to pay about £22 for 9 weeks viewing (4 weeks ahead) in June bill when he cancel after 30 days he will get some money back in July bill.

After 30 days he can cancel anytime and will only be charged on a per day basis.
So monthly / 30 = daily rate ( this is charged per day)

Live action from Northern Ireland being streamed right now by UTV

This must have come as a shock to many people in the boxing world. Was Frank Maloney connected to Box Nation in any way?

Most of the men that I have met that have been born the wrong sex or are transvestites seem to be involved in macho activities. The last transvestite that I met served in the Falklands and it turns out that Frank Maloney is transgendered.

One would think that he would have naturally veered towards a less macho role, maybe he was trying to prove something to himself?

Was he ever a boxer too in his younger days?

It is possible to watch UTV (or any other ITV franchise) anywhere in the UK for free via your Sky box.

I'll be happy to give instructions to anybody who would find this useful :)

A warning for making offensive remarks about Kellie has been issued to Audley Harrison. He'd soon be complaining if somebody white said that black people made them feel uncomfortable in their prescence.

On BBC4 this Sunday morning (31/8/14) at 00:45 there is a programme on called 'Boxing at the Movies'. It asks why, time and again, filmmakers return to the tales of the ring.

Boxing at the Movies is a great watch, I'm sure I caught it last year on BBC4. Got it set to record just in case it's not the program I think it is.

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?

Just finished watching an interview on YouTube with Frank Warren. It was filmed yesterday by I Film London. Towards the end of the interview Warren starts talking about how Boxnation is currently getting on. After chatting about launching on Talk Talk, and potential deals for future programming on the channel, he mentioned the channel is available in HD on 2 platforms??? Now maybe he's just made a mistake or Boxnation HD is going HD real soon on either Talk Talk or Virgin Media.

Another interesting point from the interview is Frank is close to signing a promotional deal with Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux! Whilst he doesn't have a massive fan base, it certainly opens the door to a potential super fight against Frampton.

Yes, I often do that too. A really useful feature would be a box that keeps details of programmes (especially films) that have already been viewed/recorded.

Heard a couple of things. One is that they are trying to add more programming through the week like Boxing Matters and the Cassius & Helder show. The other is a deal is close for a huge archive of classic fights in conjunction with ESPN Classic. The aim is to make the channel more appealing 24/7 and making the HD channel full time. Once HD goes full time it's almost certain to arrive on Virgin Media. I know this as when asked them via e-mail about 6 months, about HD coming to Virgin, I was surprised to get an e-mail back from their CEO advising Virgin don't want it until it goes full time.

If BT secure more premiership football I really do think a BT takeover of Boxnation could be on the cards!

Chad 06-10-2014 22:25

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?

Channel 5 to show live world title action on the 25th October.

"The Monte Carlo show will be broadcast in the UK on Channel 5 and will be jointly-headlined by Blackwell’s former British middleweight title rival Martin Murray as he takes on Italian Domenico Spada in a world title eliminator and Stuart Hall, who is up against American Randy Caballero as he bids to regain the IBF world bantamweight belt."

Then 3 weeks later on Eurosport it's Klitschko Vs. Pulev. Great to see world title action being televised outwith SKY Sports and Boxnation.

That's precisely why it won't happen. The loss in revenue would be far greater than advertising revenue gained from new viewers and any cost savings. I'm sure what is coming is the content and full time HD channel which Chad has advised.

German broadcaster SAT1 have agreed a broadcast deal with the Sauerlands. Interestingly news came out today that the German broadcaster is looking to launch their own dedicated 24/7 pay boxing channel in the next few months. Been hearing for just over a year that the Boxnation brand might be rolled out across Europe. Wonder if Boxnation / SAT1 are teaming up? Wonder if that's the big announcement coming soon that Warren was talking about?

Is it perhaps that Channel 5 has now got a bigger budget due to its new owners?

Boxnation signed a 3 year deal with Sauerland on or around the 22nd September 2011. Looks like the deal has expired and has not been renewed. It's good that Channel 5 have picked up the next Sauerland event but who knows if well see German boxing on British TV, on a regular basis, going forward.
