I wonder how far VM are prepared to go or will be let go with VOD ... I mean if they invested enough they could potentially have a system as big as a newsgroup provider and maybe cut back on some BB usage

allthough i dont see them going that far there is potential to have millions of hours of archived TV at the customers finger tips

They will have to go much further than they currently are due to Youview coming soon.

You're using the VM definition of "coming soon": it was announced that YouView won't launch until "early 2012" http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...h-delayed-2012

Youview is not coming for at least another year:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...til-2012.html#

I have also read reports it'll be up to 18 months before it launches. By then Virgin will have SKY on demand in place plus plenty more 3D on demand etc. Youview will be cheaper and more accessible than Virgin on demand, it's just that Virgin on demand plus TIVO will be completely and utterly untouchable by anyone! Are Virgin building an on demand monopoly?

Nialli and Chad, thanks for correcting me.

I would still have thought it is major competition to VM even if it doesn't launch soon as what they will be offering sounds similar to VM's latest plans except Youview is sub free.

I believe Youview will be far more popular than what Virgin offers, I just feel that the content on offer from Virgin will be far superior. My only concern is that somewhere down the line BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will withdraw their catch-up and on demand content from Virgin.

Does anyone know if MTV Classic may come back to Virgin Media. This is one channel I do miss. Also will the MTV Music Channel come which use to be MTV Shows. When is the viacom deal with VM up so they can negotiate all the channels as one package. Thanks in advance for any info.

With 20 hours of sporting action available on demand, and fresh content updated every month, Virgin Media sports fans will be able to enjoy an extensive range of classic moments whenever they want.

Hardly a world shattering amount of content is it

not earth shattering or ground breaking but 20 hours is better than zero hours i suppose

i was hoping VOD would be a true archive of years of general TV that one could simply pick something from not just the select few programs it is now

Can't? Why? I don't think they are obliged to provide content to VM. In some cases, they already don't (very rare I see the full F1 race coverage on VM iPlayer, but always available on the standard web iPlayer).

I think they wouldn't be allowed to withdraw from VM by the BBC Trust right now due to the money recently spent on the VM customisation, but that could change in time.

There are true archives out there, you just need to know where to look. Usenet, of course, being the largest. Supplement that with with a few bit torrent sites and emule, and you pretty much have access to everything at any time.

Cablecos, satellite companies, telecoms companies and broadcasters will never offer a true archive for the simple reason they won't be able to make money out of it.

yeah i actually know of all the "archives" at large ... i was just saying that if VM grew their VOD to such an extent there would be no need to hunt for it and 'aquire' by legitamate means or otherwise and save some of their bandwidth :)

i know its wishful thinking but maybe VM will grow the VOD to a greater extent there is less need for 'aquiring' things by other means

Did you not see the uproar when iplayer was windows only?
They had to make it multi-platform due to their service obligations.

Having a platform up and working, and then withdrawing from it to promote their own version is entirely against their service obligations.

They are obliged to provide content to ALL license fee payers, where it is technically possible. It's technically possible for them to provide vod on VM, they've proven this by having iplayer on there, therefore they HAVE to continue to offer it.

But the multi-platform implementation has been achieved via a third party (Adobe) - using this logic they should be providing content to Sky via their Anytime+ service, but they are not. Their service obligations only apply in commercially viable situations - the best deal for the majority of licence fee payers. Virgin's ~4m TV customers do not represent the majority of licence fee payers. In fact, Sky's 10m customers are more representative in their majority.

If it is not commercially viable, it will be withdrawn. And rightly so.

Recent BBC Trust steer is that no further money should be spent on bespoke versions of iPlayer. Now the Android and iPad apps are out the door, I suspect that will be it and all funds are ploughed into the web version.

But what are the terms of supply for the content - do the BBC have to pay money to VM for this arrangement? How much does it cost the BBC operationally to send and encode the streams to VM - bearing in mind it is not in the same format as that streamed by the web iPlayer?

Imagine a scenario where the BBC decide maintaing this custom implementation is no longer viable. They would be well within their rights to remove it, because the content would still be freely available via the web iPlayer.

I wouldn't take anything for granted (other than BBC One/Two), and a freely available iPlayer. Anything else is a bonus.

If the ruling of this case went in the pub landlords favour could VM source sports channels from the likes of Al Jazeera , Canal+ etc for EPL football.

If the ruling of this case went in the pub landlords favour could VM source sports channels from the likes of Al Jazeera , Canal+ etc for EPL football.

I'm sure VM doesn't have a commercial side though so pubs would still have to go through Sky, just not pay for the Sky Sports unless those channels are on Freesat or Freeview.

Yes but this has ramifications for home users as well not just pubs.

Perhaps but the domestic Greek sub that woman used costs about the same price as Sky, it was just cheaper than a commercial Sky/ESPN sub. The advice from the advocate general never for one moment said she had any right to use that domestic sub for the purpose she did.

I don't expect cheaper football in the home anytime soon personally. My fear is one big company will have total control with pan european rights for televised EPL in Europe.

I would agree with you there, pan European rights could have a detrimental effect on the consumer.

How? If you want foreign broadcasts in your home, get a satellite dish at point it where you need it.

Yes indeed you can for free to air TV, however you currently cannot obtain a legal subscription for Pay TV services from, for example, Greece.

The advocate general's advice suggested we should be able to.

Jameseh 12-02-2011 12:29

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

You never would be able to. I doubt any TV provider in Greece allows or wants people from the UK to subscribe.

But that is the point. The EC Advocate General says that we should be able to subscribe to TV services from any country in the EU. But that was only her advice, no laws have been implemented yet but in the past those recommendations have virtually always been implemented, there is a very clear mandate for this in the past.

So if it becomes law it may well be that broadcasters in future have to buy pan european rights rather than territorial rights as they do now, the ramifications are huge.

Jameseh 12-02-2011 12:39

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

So they're trying to pass the ability to subscribe from abroad, not saying that the companies abroad have to actually offer that.

In the case of say football one big broadcaster like Canal+ might have to buy up europe wide rights as only the likes of them could afford it but for things like entertainment and less expensive content you may well be able to subscribe to an individual package from another country.

No one really knows at this stage.

I couldn't care less who holds the rights personally, just the pricing.

But if one company holds pan european rights I cannot possibly see what would be 'incredible' about that. I fear they could charge what they like.

And let's face it, who would be one of the most likely candidates to get such rights? (answers on a postcard please!)

That's the problem, if you can buy a foreign sub it seems broadcasters would have to buy pan european rights as their current territorial rights wouldn't allow such freedom. Such rights would be hugely expensive for things like EPL and only a certain few could afford them

It's a bit of a mess.

I wouldn't be surprised if VM launch some HD channels soon after April, when the new financial year starts. That's obviously a guess though. They will have to start launching soon if they are going to fulfill their promise to have a lot more by the end of the year.

Nothing will actually be delivered to you ut lots of stuff will be coming soon.

So more HD will be coming soon. More SD channels will be coming soon. More "stuff" will be coming soon. Nothing will actually have a date but rest easy knowing its coming soon.

I jest of course.

VM`s "Coming Soon" is a bit like a movie trailer at the cinema, only shown about a year in advance ;)

I struggle to find anything decent to watch with the chanels i have now (bar a couple of shows), so hopfully it`ll be something nice.

Anyway i`ll just wait and see what Santa brings :D

Well your contract is up soon. So luckily you have a choice. Isn't competition great.
VM have to start adding HD channels soon because they have stated they will have x (I forget how many) amount of channels by year end. Of course they could add them Dec 31st. I would expect a lot sooner than that but I'm reading between the lines.

They stated 80 within two to three years , so if you say three years that's 17 a year.

Not really. When they announced MTV, Sci Fi HD and several other channels the announcement came out of the blue. When Five HD launched nobody was expecting it. No disrespect to Media Boy but he can only tell us what his informants find out and are willing to tell.
