tell you what when i saw the extra channels earlier this morning i nearly gagged on my cuppa lol :), especially after media boy's blog yesterday saying we wouldnt get five till end of august .... VM's HD momentum is certainly building

Good news on FIVEHD, mines working fine V+ via HDMI for sound and picture.

How come we never got History HD after, they were testing that about a year ago!?

I sometimes wonder that after seeing it on sky i hope it does make an appearance some superb programmes.

Can't wait the for BBC 1 HD simulcast channel in autumn. Last night I watched the new series of "The One Show" which was on BBC HD - that will be the last time i watch it too! lol

Yeah BBC 1 HD should be great. I'm a big fan of BBC HD.

Just hope they keep coming the HD channels. The more the better.

But getting Sky Sports and Sky movies in HD was the big one.

They just need a news channels in HD now, BBC NEWS HD anyone?

Yes they will, this is from the last one about PQ on the BBC HD channel:

•speed up the process of introduction of new HD channels so that the next BBC HD channel, the HD simulcast of BBC1, will be introduced before the stated latest date of 2012 with BBC2/3/4 HD following soon after. Otherwise, the Corporation is going to be left far behind in HD broadcasting by its commercial competitors.

Yes i know that the BBC simulcast will be in the Autumn, but what i posted about was the speeding up of the introductions of HD variants of BBC1 HD and it states that the simulcast of BBC1 HD will be launced before the stated date of 2012 with BBC2/3/4 HD following soon after.

That's a guest blog, and they are recommendations from someone who has no connection to the BBC at all, as such it's pretty much the same as me saying "The BBC should launch a super HD 3D channel next year!" neither has any effect on what the BBC will actually do.

Yeah HD should become the standard around 2012. Most people should have HD tvs by then. If you haven't got a HD TV by now your sad!!

I havn't got a HD tv, i wouldnt call myself sad, just dont watch enough TV, to warrent replacing a perfectly working, LCD one at the moment, the next TV i own will be a hd one though. but to asume everyone who has not got HD is sad, is well, a bit sad

Doubt that's true cause if you have a multiroom sub it just mirrors your subscription so I really really doubt a per box fee would be applied to access the HD channels

My parent's Sony Tritron CRT died hours before the world cup, we managed to get Comet to pretty much pricematch a Toshiba Freeview HD tv, the difference is massive for them, its a shame our virgin box only has a SCART (analog) connection, was hoping for HDMI so the channels didn't look so crap for them :(

I don't suppose virgin would replace it with a newer box that has a hdmi connection so that the picture would be digital? I know there is the V+ box but they can't afford that.

Thats just stupid at the moment I got Multiroom and I pay just £5.50 a month get the HD channels, Sky Sports, Sky Movies, XL TV on both.

I won't be paying £7 per box thats for sure. I've been waiting for Sky Sports HD and Movies for ages aswell. I'll just have to pay for it on the box box which sucks!

What package do you have?

New V HD box is free with certain packages. So is V+ box.

V HD = £49 Activation + £15 Self Install or £35 Manned Install
V+ HD = £75 Activation + £15 Self Install or £35 Manned Install
OR if they want to keep their existing box for another room
V+ HD = £49 Activation + £35 Manned Install + £5.50 a month multiroom charge

Recently I got 2 V+ boxes for free. There the old dodgy Scientific-Atlanta ones though.

hmm, i looked on virgin's site, it says the V HD costs £49 for activation and the same for V+ HD, there's no monthly cost for either on XL package. Can i really phone them up and get a V HD for free, what would i have to pay to get the V+ HD, my parents would love the recording ability.

This is a good point you get 43 HD channels on Sky. Plus they've had a lot more HD channels for a lot longer now.

I hope this £10 per box isn't true!! Not for XL customers anyhow.

I cant see it being £10 a month couse sky are geting rid of there £10 change end of the year september i think, i fouth we would get them in with the SD movies or sport, i want the movie HD channels only not sport :erm: :eeek:

I'm not! The discounted activation fee of £49 only applies to existing customers that keep their existing set top box for another room. Installation charges have not been added to the prices displayed on the website but if you look at the small print it says "Installation charges apply (starting from £35 for standard install and, subject to availability, from £15 for Quickstart self-install)."

Yes as far as I know the rumour is only for Sky Sports and Sky Movies HD.

I think, if there has to be an additional charge on top of the premium channel fees, it should be:

SS HD: No additional charge for XL, £1 for L and £2 For M(+)
SM HD: No additional charge for XL, £2.50 for L and £3.50 for M(+)
SS + SM HD: No additional charge for XL, £3 for L and £5 for M(+)

£10 per box is poor value compared to Sky. Even £7 is poor value.

Sky: £10 per box and you (currently) get 40+ HD channels, regardless of what packs you have.

VM: £10 per box and for say, Sports fans, you get.....2 HD Channels.

£10 for 40 HD channels compared to £10 for 2 Sports Channels (I don't care about movies)

Hmmmmm.

Lets just hope this is only a rumour, I like Virgin despite being lied too pretty bad when our 12 month contract was up, but this truely would end it for me.

That might be what the channels are worth to you but If Sky are charging VM something like £7 per month for them then they would very quickly go bust charging those prices.

If it is a per box thing then I would assume you would get to choose which box(es) receives the HD variants of the Sky channels and only have to pay for the ones that do.

It's £7 per box. Phoned virgin and bluffed that I thought HD was available now. Customer service said that date was not confirmed as they didn't have the codes as yet but it would be £7 per box

Right, let me put it this way, VM have just sold their wholly owned channels to Sky now in order to allow Sky to buy the channels then I'm sure that all carriage negotiations would have to have ensured that VM get access to the Sky HD variants for a fair price otherwise they could say, sack it, you're not having our channels. I would wait until there has been an official announcement before getting all angry about the pricing which is rumoured to be true.

i have to agree here its a big rip off !!!

i currently have the XL tv package but no Sky Sports or Sky Movies subcriptions. i would of been willing to pay for a Sky premium HD supscription (sports and movies in HD) without having to pay for the SD broadcasts as well. it just seems a waste of money to have to pay to recieve the SD channels before you get the option of having the HD channels.

it looks like VM missed a good thing here by forcing people subcribe to the Sky SD premium channels and waste money before allowing an option to have the HD premium content, afterall who wants to watch SD channels (unless you dont have a HD box and TV in wich case you would not subcribe to HD permium channels) if you have the HD channels available.

Hey i have 2 options about this alleged charge and they are:

1, If there is a charge and anybody is not happy with it = Do not pay it.

2, If there is no charge ( package dependent ) everybody will be happy with it = Dependent on the charge on packages.

We have no choice at the moment to bitch (or praise) about rumours. VM haven't made their announcement yet.

Expecting customers not to speculate before the announcement, on an internet discussion forum, is simply unrealistic.

Tell us, Virgin, then we can deal with facts. We can then praise those facts and maybe even bitch about them too. ;)

Unlike some others in this thread I don't think that Sky are about to scrap the extra HD charge. That being the case they are never going to sell them to VM for far less than they charge their own customers. If they did that VM would be able to undercut them and that is a situation Sky would never allow. Sky didn't get where they are today by acting like a charity.

This argument always amazes me. It's like people think they'd be able to get it cheaper if they just took the HD versions, when in reality they'd end up being charged the same. It's always going to cost more for the HD version than the SD, regardless of if you actually then get both. Think of it as paying for the HD version and then getting the SD thrown in for free.

I subscribe to the movies and sport channels,im on the Vip package and they want £10.00 per box! so will I chose the bigger TV downstairs or the smaller one upstairs where I can watch in peace

you could do and i see your point but its a waste especially if im paying for premium content that i will never watch.
like i said i would willingly pay for a HD premium package (as long as the price reflects the fact there is no SD content included) but all this throwing the SD channels for free is of on interest to me.

Yeah but you have to agree 23.00 XL plus 27.50 movies and sport plus 7.00 HD charge is 57.50 which to me is way to steep when you consider you only get 2 sports HD channels and less XL HD channels than sky have on 6 mix.

READ THIS

Just spoken to customer services, she knew straight away, she said she has recieved training on this tonight, you have to subscribe to sports and movies in SD first and then the HD variants will be available
for £7 per month per box regardless of what tv package you are on. These will be available from the 19th july:):)

I agree with others, for VIP customers it is shocking, with no price price cut for sports or movie channels, it should be absorbed within the current price, not an extra fee on top.

I can't believe the moaning going on in this forum. A couple of months ago we hardly had any HD channels at all. Since then Virgin added 12 channels for free with more to come. And now quite a few threaten to leave because of the HD premium channel charges. If you were that bothered about Sky Movies and Sports in HD, why didn't you go to Sky ages ago?
Agree on Jab's comment about VIP customers though.
