Except the XX was some numbers... I not imagining this!! Promise!! Heres my test results: -

Thanks, Spleeny, you're a pal. Guess that answers my question then, and it is nice to be proven wrong in this instance. Looks like Baguley is getting the upgrade. Now I just need it to work its way to M14 (Fallowfield/Withington way) ;)

Thats OK dude. Just trying to instill some hope to all 4Mb, and definitely not start a flame war... besides, I've seen what your species is capable of on a Saturday night! ;)

Looking at the list, theres so few areas left incomplete that everyone must be done by August I'd guess.

can you please refer to my last few posts. and just to let you know, nearly everybody should now have been upgraded -- and VM don't intend on updating that page with the ETA 24/7.

vinnyh 31-07-2008 22:48

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

The upgrade rollout schedule was updated today. Most are Complete, but the remainder, including Telford, are all TBC. VM obviously aren't confident enough to 'promise' an August upgrade for anyone, but I have hope if not expectation.

Hello Everyone

Can anyone confirm a 10 MB upgrade in the Warrington area ?

I see some connecting to the Baguley server reporting the upgrade complete.

I'm in Warrington but still only getting 4 MB at the moment.

Thanks :)

Yes, as above sometimes the upgrades take a simple powercycle on the modem for it to kick in...

I am on the 10MB package now in Teeside :D I only upgraded from 2MB the other day, So glad I did :D

To get the speed increase, you do need to reboot your cable modem...

As we seem to be on the same branch of the server could you confirm whether or not you are using a router. I'm wireless and haven't the faintest idea how to check whether it's my router causing the problem. I have dug out a cable to connect my laptop directly to my modem but my technical knowledge stops when I come to knowing what to do next. :dunce:

andymck 01-08-2008 17:16

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I'm on a router but this wouldn't alter the modem config page which still show 4 meg, afaik

kryogenik 01-08-2008 17:20

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Jo, I doubt it's your router - your config file shows you haven't got the upgraded speed there. From what I understand yours should look like this one if it's been done.

spc1-oldh4-0-0-custxxx.bagu.broadband.ntl.com
I've still not been upgraded either yet - obviously some areas not finished is all, I'd say.

My connection (L) went from 4 to 10 a few months ago. I was actually getting around 8 and was happy ...
These past few days I am getting this :

Fri, 01 Aug 2008 17:45:53 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 1319 ms = 776.3 KB/sec, approx 6397 Kbps, 6.25 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 1176 ms = 870.7 KB/sec, approx 7175 Kbps, 7.01 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 1356 ms = 755.2 KB/sec, approx 6223 Kbps, 6.08 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 2607 ms = 785.6 KB/sec, approx 6473 Kbps, 6.32 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6567 Kbps, 6.42 Mbps

Yet at Speedtest.net (which has always been consistent ) I am getting less than 1mb ??

A call to tech support maybe ?

speedtest.net maidenhead server can give falsely low readings when it's busy.

Either try the Dublin server or choose London or Dublin at http://myspeed.visualware.com/

This gives a more detailed analysis as well...

Yes thank you, I also know that using them to test your speed doesn't give you details of:

Quality of Service
TCP Forced Idle
Maximum Download Pause
Average Download Pause
Minimum Round Trip Time To Server
Average Round Trip Time To Server

and a Transfer Speed / Delay vs Time plot.

myspeed does... ;)

If you don't happen to use newsgroups then a simple speed test (or downloading large files from ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/ ) is easier...

I have to admit that is one aspect of the upgrade that has me happy to stay in my un-upgraded little world. My 4MB connection is really rock solid, if the 10MB ever materialises I shall be a tad unhappy if I get a worse service as a result.

I'm in Withington too. We come under the Baguley servers unfortunately. Baguely is still listed as TBC. If you look on the 'where's my upgrade' page again, you will see 'Withington' listed under Baguley.

The good news, though, is that there have already been some users of the Baguley servers who have gotten the upgrade, even though it says TBC....so we're definitely getting upgraded now. Just keep rebooting the modem and wait till they work their way here, I guess. :)

I'm not usually a pessimistic person but, having had a stable connection (for the last couple of months) for the first time in over a year, I can't help but feel there will be a great gnashing of teeth before I get a stable 10MB. Oh well, off to reboot the modem...again.:)

My dad actually just phoned Virgin enquiring about the upgrade and they told him that the set top cable box we have now can only handle 4mb. So they are coming to fit a modem for the upgrade on the 12th of august. So will just have to wait till then.

And not to use a USB cable to connect it.

Will the 'NTL Home 200' style modem handle 10MB upgrade OK? I've had it a good few years you see.

Thanks.

All 200 series modems can handle up to 20mb.

It still states that Reading is TBC.

I would suspect all remaining areas are wrapped up by the end of August.

Be patient brother!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

As a couple of people have mentioned dont use a USB cable to connect your modem to your pc. I live in stockport and got the upgrade about 5 days ago. Ive had broadband off ntl/virgin for around 3 years and until 5 days ago always used a USB cable. Turns out USB only handles upto around 5MB. So obviously had to change to an Ethernet cable. Speed then shot upto 9MB+.

Only thing is the speed is usually around what i pay for. but at night it sometimes goes really slow, and im talking less than 1MB sometiems. I dont download any illegal stuff, i use Youtube quite a lot and sometimes trade mp3's with friends on messenger, and normal internet surfing. so can anyone explain why the speeds sometimes go really low at night?

Hi.

I live in Didsbury, Manchester. I noticed the schedule for upgrade changed to show Manchester as upgraded in the past couple of days, so I rebooted my modem a few times but I'm still getting 4mb.

modem info:

(new type black modem)

cpc1-with4-0-0-custXXX.bagu.cable.ntl.com

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

Didsbury is South Manchester, I presumed that it would be included with the Manchester/Stockport upgrades. Is this the case or..?

Thanks very much for any info at all :)

Hi antmam64 to the forum.

Your connection details show that you are on the Baguley server cpc1-with4-0-0-custXXX.bagu.cable.ntl.com which still has areas still waiting to be upgraded. With any luck we should be upgraded in the near future.

I would advise you to edit your post to remove your customer number.

Ah ok. Looking at the schedule that makes sense as didsbury is between withington and wilmslow, which are still "TBC"

Oh well.. :)

And thanks for the heads up, but I can't edit my post anymore, and it's already been quoted :P

Yep, it is indeed. My home address is: "Didsbury, Manchester, Lancashire"

so I overlooked the other areas, I just saw that Manchester was upgraded in July :P

Manchester area: Oldham, Bolton, Burnley, Rochdale, Blackburn, Salford, Stockport - Complete

Baguley area: Birkenhead, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Stoke, Warrington, Brombrough, Stretford, Wilmslow, Withington - TBC

It makes perfect sense now, after actually looking at it properly ;)

A couple of days ago I was convinced that it was a similar mistake people were making a lot in this thread. People claiming to be served from Baguley servers (which you and I are both on, I'm Withington/Fallowfield here) were saying they had just gotten the upgrade to 10MB. I was convinced that they were actually on Manchester servers and that they were getting confused. However, a few people posted proof that they were indeed on Baguley servers, and then posted the modem config page to show that they had actually got the 10MB upgrade. So we can deduce from this that Baguley servers are actually being upgraded at this moment in time, area by area (it is huge!), even though it is still saying 'TBC'.

So at least we know we're close.....and not to pay too much attention to the 'Where's My Upgrade' page. ;)

Yet on the 'Where's My Upgrade' page, Stockport is listed as being on the Manchester servers, which we know are complete. Curious this. It says:

Manchester area - Oldham, Bolton, Burnley, Rochdale, Blackburn, Salford, Stockport - Complete

Baguley area - Birkenhead, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Stoke, Warrington, Brombrough, Stretford, Wilmslow, Withington - TBC

The info on that page must not be 100% accurate if you're in Stockport and on Baguley servers?

I think some areas of Warrington (Birchwood, I think) were Telewest. I am close to the Latchford area, and that was NTL.

And I am still waiting for the upgrade... ho hum.
