I took a trip down the lochside and into town this morning ... I don't know which was worse, the three days' accumulation of sheet ice at our end of the road, or the several inches of drifting snow at the other end.

I just love it here, microclimate in action. One day I may go back to school and do a degree in meteorology. Fascinating stuff.

Tell me about it. Left work at 1630 yesterday, got home 14 miles away at 1950. Couple of flakes of snow and the roads go to hell and people suddenly find out that not looking after their cars properly really isn't a good idea.

Raistlin 22-12-2009 08:34

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Nearly lost the car on a roundabout this morning. It looked clear (unlike the rest of the roads around here) - I guess I underestimated just how slippy it would still be.

In other news.....I'm the only person in the office so far (which is unusual to say the least) so I guess I'm spending the day on my own today.

Working from home today - due to the compacted snow ice I cannot get the car up the hill and out of our road.

It came down yesterday - started at 1pm and didn't relent until the early hours.

Took me just over 3 hours to do 15 miles from our office to home.

The sun is now starting to peek through so hopefully a thaw soon!

At home it was snowing heavily and our street is like an ice rink. The van was sliding all over at the slightest provokation.

Here in Runcorn, a mere 6 miles away, it's sunny and the roads are clear or have a little slush on them!

Well my good deeds for the day

Well I was up early this morning, to pick up my nephew and niece for the day, outside it was -6c.

As was trying to open my dads car door to get out the child seats, I saw an eldery neighbour trying to walk her way up our hill, I told her to becareful.

I then realised WTF am I doing. I stopped and walked over to her took her trolley and let her grab hold of my arm and walk her up the hill.

She said that in her 82 years she didn't remember it being so cold, snowy.

Just spotted your post and looked out of the window, it's come down heavy here across the water as well. Couple of cars wheelspinning trying to get up the hill in the past couple of mins... they might as well give up because there's no grit left in the communal bin. Hmmmm, according to the BBC weather site there should be sunny intervals in Glasgow right now.

Looking out my flat window into a blizzard makes me think they might have got it wrong a bit.

Bit like last Sunday, Met office said cloud and Sunny spells for Mansfield, yet we about 4-5 centimetres of snow in a couple of hours.

Also, I recieve pictures from the NOAA polar orbitting satellites, they painted an entirely different story, silly really, £300 of equipment can forecase percipitation better than a goverment funded organisation.

Just thick frost here..which has been with us for the last three nights. One benefit has been the brilliantly sunny if rather chilly days.

When I think we were getting fresh raspberries from Scotland this time last year one realises that this is like the winters we used to get. We have been spoiled in recent years and as a consequence have forgotten how to cope.

It was still snowing here when I went to bed to bed at 6am and we still appear to be getting a light downfall although it's nearer to rain than snowflakes now.

The sparrows have remembered we had loads of fat ball strung on our trees so they seem to be happy.

The railway station is doing a roaring trade ...well for the one stopping train an hour that uses our line. Seems strange to see all the commuters arriving on foot rather than risk driving to the station, so far there have only been a couple of cars that have braved the roads around me. The roads are, in the main still pristine snow.

Chris 05-01-2010 09:56

Re: [Merged] Snow!

We have had our first significant snowfall of the winter overnight. There has been plenty down the road from here, but where we're located, the Loch keeps things a couple of degrees warmer than everywhere else, and that's been enough to keep it clear. Not any more though, and last night's snow has fallen on top of ice, which is sitting on top of an un-gritted road...

Needless to say we got the Jimny out to do the school run this morning. :D

We left our camera at the in-laws on New Year's Day, but after our fuel delivery has arrived I may take the video camera up the hillside and then post you all a clip.

British severe weather is like British severe poverty, a fairly limp-wristed affair when placed in a global context. Northern Norway has severe weather. Oklahoma, in the tornado season, has severe weather. And a Cuban has every right to say “Wow, that was severe” after a category five hurricane has just blown his house into the middle of Houston. But in Barnsley? No.

When you’ve seen the flooding in Bangladesh during the monsoon, you’ll realise how idiotic Gordon Brown looked in Tewkesbury earlier this year, comforting those whose DFS sofas had been ruined. And when you’ve experienced an Icelandic whiteout, you will cry with laughter when some hapless reporter in wellies comes on the rolling news channel to say Britain is locked in ice chaos. It’s all complete claptrap.

so not looking like i'll get anywhere near the office tomorrow. i left the office in wirral at 2 and got home about 5, a grand total of 30 miles. and the smeggin idiots were still out.

on the m53 it filters down from 3 lanes to 2 just before ellesmere port - 2 inside lanes heavy with slush and lane 3 with slush and fresh snow. so as everyone slows down to filter (well as slow down as you can from 30-35) a bloody car transporter flies past in the fast lane doin 50-60 leaving my van covered in dirty slush (it was nice white snow). trouble was everyone else started then.

The A617 between Blidworth\Rainworth & the Widdicome fair was quite bad earlier and the idiocy of some drivers beggars belief.

Tesco was deserted, it was quite nice to scoot round in a couple of minutes.

The car park looked empty when I walked past at about 2:30, Mansfield was just as bad, I got dropped in Mansfield near the Red, walked through the bus station and the four seasons, 75% of the shops were closed. All the Stagecoach busses that I saw were displaying "sorry not in service", and going back to the bus depot. Oddly enough, Trent Barton seem to be able to operate normally.

Oak Tree Lane was just standing slush. Jubilee Way, was(and still is) awful.

We went into the village this afternoon and it was eerily quiet. It looked so nice we went back for cameras and tripod. Here's my attempts to capture the ethereal feel:

It was well weird to be able to set up my tripod in the middle of the road and casually take several pictures - during the rush hour! Just as we arrived, Mr Norbert stuck on a very slight slope and was unable to go forwards or back. Unfortunately he was right across a junction - and with a full load of something noxious. On the other side of that fence is the Manchester Ship Canal. For the first time in my memory it was frozen over completely - and we've lived here over 25 years.

I am surprised as this village usually is sheltered geographically from the worst of the snow. But it's here and it's 3 inches thick and it's still snowing.:erm:

I can't believe that they've already thrown in the towel and cancelled loads of tommorrow's train services in Surrey. We've only just about got a dusting of snow. Pathetic.

No snow here yet (in 'The East'), although we're probably not due it until tomorrow afternoon anyway.

Well in Harlow (CM20) the 16" of snow has yet to appear.

Mind you it will proberly dump it over night.

I will trek my way to sign on tomorrow, and if they ain't open I will raise hell.

Thanks for the kind words folks.

Now here's the view thru Mrs A's eye. She prefers detail to 'views'. Note that these are all hand-held - pretty impressive! Unfortunately, her camera is still running on summer time.

All I can say is that you've both got amazing eyes for pictures.

Very nice shots, both yours and Mrs A's :)

Well, just put me bins out. Got maybe a couple of inches of snow..

Oddly, this afternoon/evening (when the weather was no worse than it's been for a couple of weeks), the trains were totally messed up. Now we have heavy snow and when I last checked (about 30 minutes ago), the trains on my local line were fine..

We have had another 2" overnight I don't think its worth my while spending maybe hour or more trying to get my car off the estate and onto some reasonable roads.

Therefore a day off today  May even venture out with the camera.

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Judging by the layer on top of the table cover in the garden we had around 6" (carefully tries to avoid being Nanny Ogg).

Schools are shut yet hubby managed to get to work this morning by car. Tomorrow looks like being very icy as temperatures drop to -5.

More snow overnight, not a lot here in the center of town but the council are already Twittering school closures around the area.

Stagecoach are runnng a skeleton service, half hourly all services, apart from the service to Edwinstowe, and no service to Chesterfield.

I've just texted my boss and put a days holiday in. Saw a Transit trying to pull of our side road earlier, he didn't make it, the van's back end was dancing around all over the place.

Yea heard that on the news about the buses, snowing quite heavily in Newark at the moment.

I'll phone in at 9am when someone will be there to answer the phone. My wife managed to get into work, only because her mates other half has a 4x4. I'm not even gonna try and get either car going today.

Its was quite funny looking at yesterdays weather forecast's from the BBC for the Mansfield\Chesterfield area "light snow showers" LOL not so light me thinks.
I think that this calls for a fry-up :D
