I love The Expanse, it is quality serious space scifi. Next month is probably going to be the best tv month in years. We have got The Expanse, Westworld and Lost in Space.

Talking of Lost in Space.

good new for a brand new series. Every month SFX does features on at least 2 series which about to come out or are already out and we aware of and it will say which US network it is on and time etc and UK is always guaranteed every time TBC because nobody has even bothered looking at it and planning it in. I think they need to create a new position for me at Sky where I can plan this stuff for them. I'll get them so many quality series that they'll have to give me a new channel as well.

If it means the return of Dark Matter I'll back your appointment!

General Maximus 27-04-2018 21:19

Re: The Crossing

That is a cracking idea. Sky are way behind Netflux and Amazon imho for original content. How awesome would it have been if they partnered with Syfy or just brought the rights to Dark Matter so they owned a proper scifi series. BSG worked out brilliantly for them and it is a shame they havent done more stuff like it since.
If things worked out with Josephy Mallozi and the other SG dude Sky could have had an amazing creative collaboration for years to come with other series as well.

pip08456 27-04-2018 21:51

Re: The Crossing

FYI Syfy don't own the rights to Dark Matter.

According to Joe Mallozzi MGM's recent Stargate origins was testing the water for a fully fledged SciFi online streaming channel, something I'd gladly contribute to if it comes about.

As regards Dark Matter all hope is not yet lost, thanks to Netflix it's still in their most popular series in several countries and picking up more fans as a result so who knows?

Syfy are getting a reputation for cancelling good SciFi series.

General Maximus 27-04-2018 22:05

Re: The Crossing

Given how popular scifi is becoming Netflix could be very clever. They have got Lost in Space and Star Trek Discovery, Dark Matter would be another great addition.

I think its unlikely they would pick up DM this late in the day, the cast have likely moved on now, and the sets all destroyed.

Yes the sets have been destroyed but that's not insurmountable. None of the cast have as yet signed up for a long term project and all have expressed being willing and wanting to finish the story.

The first 3 seasons still appear in the most popular series list on netflix which could prompt them to consider it.

Until the recent netflix news Joe Mallozzi has expressed (and still does) hope MGM will allow at least a miniseries to wind things up if it's new online platform comes to fruition.

They're adding an extra 11th episode to this season of Legion, hopefully it's just an added bonus and not a sign that it's getting cancelled. Apparently it has really low viewership on FX.

General Maximus 02-05-2018 11:13

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

In the past I have been infuriated by networks impulsive decisions based on one or two episodes ratings because they just don't give things chance. If you put 2 and 2 together I think the same thing is happening here because it is too much of a coincidence. The ratings for the first two episodes of season 2 are diabolical so it wouldn't surprise me if they have decided to cancel the series based on those two episodes and order the extra episode to allow the writers to wrap up story last minute:

Bugs Bunny is making a comeback :)

Quote:

Warner Bros Animation is creating a new series of short-form cartoons based on the studio’s iconic Looney Tunes Cartoons franchise featuring the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the gang that will harken to the original Looney Tunes theatrical shorts. The studio said today multiple artists will produce 1-6 minute shorts “written” and drawn by the cartoonists allowing their own personality and style to come through.
Its not mentioned how many seasons, but it does imply more than one ;
Quote:

The plan is to produce 1,000 minutes each season, with the content to be distributed across multiple platforms including digital, mobile and broadcast.

Oh, and I forgot Salvation as well, in a couple of weeks.

General Maximus 16-06-2018 09:02

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

yup, I am looking forward to Salvation, I loved the first season and was very happy when it was renewed. I am a 12 Monkeys fan as well but apart from The Last Ship I think that is pretty much it for summer. Because I re-watched GoT at the beginning of May I am still behind on my normal series but I am catching up. I put The Originals on hold so I should have the last season of that to watch as well but tbh in terms of enjoyment factor I actually wouldnt mind going back and rewatching something great which finished years ago. I would gladly drop everything and watch B5, BSG or SG1 from start to finish.

Paul 17-06-2018 05:11

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

I'm building my collection of SG-1 from the 720p sources that have been coming out recently, Seasons 1 to 4 so far, I'll get round to watching them at some point.

Pick has been broadcasting SG-1 on weeknights since last year and finally got to the end last Monday. I've watched the whole thing through. Great fun. They've started Atlantis now. :D

Excellent. It seems like forever ago (I think it was 2010) Sky 1 showed 2 eps of Atlantis from 6pm every week night and I watched them religiously every night and made Thursday nights Domino pizza night for Atlantis, I loved it.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

Yes, I know, hence the "at some point" ;)

I dont actually want 1080p, just 720p, but they are all x264 atm.

When I do get them I'll be converting them to 720p/x265.
I'm slowly updating all my old SD shows to 720p/x265, but I have 1000's of episodes to do ... :erm:

I have a lot of stuff on the NAS, but I'm thinking I just need to get rid of all the stuff I've watched before - I struggle to keep up with new stuff, never mind going back to re-watch stuff I've already watched.

I watched an old Mini-Series back from about 2006 the other day (The Lost Room).

A couple of bits of info which I have pulled from my latest issue of SFX:

- there is a new She-ra tv series in the works but I think it is going to be animated
- Siren has been renewed for a second season
- although Gotham is ending they are looking at doing a spin-off/prequel about Alfred aptly name "Pennyworth"
- the new Star Wars live action series is going to be based 7 years after Return of the Jedi

and brace yourself because I have saved the best till last............................

they are making another Bill and Ted movie :dunce:

Dont bother, i have just turned it off after 5 mins. I wanted to persevere for comedic value but it literally gets worse by the second and i couldnt bring myself to watch anymore. I think somebody should tell them that the whole point of armour is to prevent slicing attacks by swords and you therefore dont die (3 times).

Me too, I'll give it one more ep but I'm ready to ditch it. Either they are both too thick not to see the connection they obviously have or just too stupid.

Take it as it's meant to be, a "fantasy" series. The normal laws don't apply. I'll give it a couple of more episodes and then decide.

It isnt the fantasy bit that bothers me, it is the abysmal acting, script and production quality. It looks like something the BBC has made and this is why i dont watch english tv series. I cant enjoy something, believe it is real and put myself into that universe if every second something isnt right and annoying me. For all the grief the Shannara Chronicles got it was a million times better than this.

I dont really see what was so bad about it, sure it was a bit cheesy in places, but it was ok, much like Legend of the Seeker, nothing special, but watchable.

Are you familiar with Simon Stålenhag? Deadline reports Amazon has ordered a new TV show based on the artist’s work called Tales from the Loop.

The sci-fi series “explores the town and people who live above “The Loop,” a machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe – making things possible that were previously relegated only to science fiction.”

Amazon has ordered eight episodes of Tales from the Loop. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

I watched a show from last year over the weekend.

Lifeline

Quote:

... the show tells the tale of an insurance agency that uses time travel to prevent the deaths of their clients. After the company's best agent, Conner Hooks, accidentally causes his wife's death during a save-gone-bad, he attempts to find her killer while searching for a way to travel back in time and reverse history.
Its only 8 episodes (25 mins each), but I quite enjoyed it.

The series does not need rebooted. If anything a continuation with an older Buffy and a new young slayer.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

absolutely, as much as I have gone on about remakes in the past saying they aren't bad because it is nice to have the new effects on stuff like BSG, Buffy is definitely one thing that never needs remaking. I am working my way through them all while I have lunch everyday on my tablet and they still move me as much as they did 20 years. Nothing is ever going to bear the relationships and dynamic between the characters, the humour and wit and the overall unique and very special feel the show had. SMG is amazing. All you have got to do is look at the new Charmed reboot to see it isn't going to work. When magic and spiritual stuff are involved you like the idea of more modern series because they can make it look more real and believable but it has also got to be supported with good acting and stories and I just ever see anything living up to the original as far as Buffy is concerned.

They should do a final episode where they place the program itself into room 101....

Very meta...

Interesting. So not a reboot at all but a continuation of the story then, or a reboot with all new characters.

Also opens up the opportunity for cameo appearences by the original cast I would hope.

Amazon has ordered a horror event series called Them.

They seem confident it will do well as they have ordered two seasons initially.

Quote:

... the first season, Them: Covenant, takes place in 1952 and centers on Alfred and Lucky Emory, who decide to move their family from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood. The family’s home on a tree-lined, seemingly idyllic street becomes ground zero where malevolent forces both real and supernatural threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.

statements like that do my head in because they are completely untrue. It is actually "the 10 worst cheapo naff dramas on terrestrial tv". They have made no effort to discuss any new US series and what channels they will be shown on on Sky/Virgin/BT etc.

Why would they? The U.K. audience for any of those featured will eclipse figures for anything on Netflix, Amazon or Sky Atlantic, and especially so amongst the Grauniad’s target demographic.

Also, despite the fact that such things are clearly not to your taste, any period drama made for BBC1 or ITV is not going to be cheap, and if it’s adapted by Andrew Davies or an original screenplay by the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge it isn’t going to be naff, either. ;)

What they should have said was the 10 best shows 'in their opinion'

Why? Anything written by a TV critic in a newspaper is their opinion. This is generally well understood. It’s a waste of space to keep reminding readers of what they ought to know already.

Mark Hamill is joining Knightfall for season 2 which is going to be interesting. I hope we get to see him kick some ass with his metallic light sabre.
