Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

I suppose it's really difficult to truly quantify how successful SKY Atlantic really is, as it's only available on SKY and NOW TV. Most other popular pay channels are available on the likes of SKY, BT, Talk Talk, NOW TV, Virgin Media and UPC. Here's some statistics, 'cause I love statistics, to try paint an interesting picture.......or maybe not :)

I've taken viewing stats from BARB for SKY Atlantic, and SKY Atlantic+1, from the last week of every month this year. I didn't want to go over the top by listing every week so far this year but wanted to show a consistent snap shot.

January:

SKY Atlantic (661,000)
SKY Atlantic+1 (66,000)

= 727,000

February:

SKY Atlantic (871,000)
SKY Atlantic+1 (89,000)

= 960,000

March:

SKY Atlantic (701,000)
SKY Atlantic+1 (72,000)

= 773,000

April:

SKY Atlantic (899,000)
SKY Atlantic+1 (83,000)

= 982,000

May

SKY Atlantic (950,000)
SKY Atlantic+1 (101,000)

=1,051,000

June

SKY Atlantic (820,000)
SKY Atlantic+1 (84,000)

=904,000

Total = 5,397,000

So on average SKY Atlantic gets a daily reach of 899,500. With 10,600,000 TV customers that means 8.5% of SKY viewers tune in on a regular basis.

If SKY Atlantic became available on all pay TV platforms there would be a potential reach of 16,800,000 (SKY 10.6 million, Virgin 3.8 million, TalkTalk 1 million, BT 1 million and UPC 400,000). If the viewing percentage of 8.5% carried over to a reach of 16,800,000 SKY Atlantic would get roughly 1,428,000 viewers per day. This then pushes the channel into the top 5 pay TV Entertainment channels ahead of FOX, on par with Comedy Central and GOLD and behind SKY Living and SKY One.

Of course the other SKY basics aren't on BT, and not all 16,800,000 pay TV customers will have access to the channel, but even with a bit of a swing in figures SKY Atlantic stays in the top 5.

P.S. I factored in +1 viewing figures for GOLD, FOX, SKY Living and SKY One when considering Atlantic's position compared to other pay TV exclusive channels.

May was good month for Sky Atlantic.

Thanks for info - good post.

Meanwhile sky's most exclusive show is Game of Thones this is highest illegally downloaded program.

Should we blame Sky for this because if it was readily available people would tape it on their v+ and tivo stbs and not download it illegally?

Just read that link and i gotta ask why the Government are spending taxpayers money enforcing a Civil Offence, it should be up to the rights holders to enforce as it isn't a Police matter.

Unless someone is downloading and creating DVD's to sell, in which case it becomes a criminal offence

If these are BARB ratings, UPC viewers will, presumably, also be excluded from Sky 1 ratings. Similarly, Sky platform viewers in the ROI should also be excluded as BARB only collects data for the UK.

Agree, my mistake but still stand by my point that Sky 1 has wider availability than Sky Atlantic - I guess about 40% more due to its availability in the VM and TT TV households

Great post. The only thought that comes to mind is should the 10.6m figure have the Irish households removed, thereby uplifting the Atlantic viewing figures to closer to 10% of Sky households?

You see, I've read this post and can't help thinking that it proves the opposite point that you were trying to make.

The inescapable conclusion is that you have far too much time on your hands :D Since you have Sky I can only assume this is because there is nothing worth watching on Atlantic! :D

It's an interesting point you raise. I have no idea how many people in Ireland have SKY, and what viewing figures for the channel are. Found the Irish version of BARB but can't really understand it :D

Interesting to see that the +1 always (roughly) picks up another 10% of viewers. I wonder if this is representative of +1 channels as a whole? If so, I wonder if the presence of a +1 allows channels to charge 10% more to advertisers?

Didn't Sky agree to let Sky Atlantic go onto one of the smaller Pay TV operators, or did I dream it?

I've always been suspicious that +1 channels are for revenue, rather than customer needs.

SKY Atlantic is only on SKY and Now TV at the moment. You need to stop eating cheese before going to bed :D

I'm sure they are all there primarily for revenue (apart from when BBC1 +1 starts).

LOL, after thinking about it, I might have been thinking about one of the missing Sky Sports HD channels (F1 I think).

People were wondering why it wasn't on VM, yet was carried by one of the smaller operators.

Except if Sky Atlantic is a major reason that people move to Sky, many potential viewers will have already moved.

It's actually a bit lower than average. On occasion I've seen +1 channels get as many viewers as the main one.

That is a great post Chad, it still seems odd to me that for all the hype SA gets, SA would, in theory, still come in behind Sky 1 and Sky Living in the ratings.

Based purely on your figures (and also with my tongue placed firmly in my cheek) perhaps Sky would be better off making Sky 1 the exclusive channel?!? :)

I hear that Sky are set to launch an '24 hour reading news papers channel' called Sky News Press due to it ratings winner for Sky News.

It all depends where they are moving from. The majority of people taking up the entertainment pass via NOW TV are coming from Freeview / Freesat households. SKY class them as new TV customers when doing their quarterly reports and putting a spin on why people are joining them.

SKY 1 and SKY Living are long established brands. SKY 1 has been on the air for 25 years and SKY Living a little less with 21 years. SKY Atlantic is still very much in it's infancy and will need time to grow. SKY 1 and SKY Living have shows that have been running for years, have dedicated fan bases and tend to span 20 to 25 episodes such as Greys Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Simpsons and Modern Family. These will undoubtedly help keep the viewing figures high. Ironically I don't think any of these shows draw the viewing figures that Game of Thrones does.
