Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Just spent four hours in LGI A&E with my son (aged 27).
Why is it a happy thought? Well, I get a call from him at just before 8am, saying he has been knocked off his bike (he cycles to/from Leeds City Centre from Far Headingley to get to work), and he ended up flying over the car's bonnet and landing 10 feet beyond the car - since he was only five minutes (on the Otley Road) from our house, it was quicker for me to pick him up and take him to A&E than ring/wait for an ambulance (this was on the advice of a passing GP who stopped and did a quick once-over). Well, after initial triage and x-rays to the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee (all right hand side), the good news was that it was just lots of road rash and extensive bruising, with nothing broken - he will be on crutches for a couple of days, but should be mostly back to normal in around a week (not so sure about the bike, though...). So, best possible outcome of what could have been a really bad situation. (my son was cycling down the Otley Road bus lane when the car turned left into Cottage Road, cutting across the bus lane - perfectly legal, but he didn't see my son, so car/bike interface scenario occurred; the driver was very apologetic, and waited for me to arrive before leaving). Please don't turn this into a car/bike rant, as it is not the point of this post - I am just very pleased my son didn't have serious injuries. |
Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Thank god that your son is going to be alright Hugh.:tu:

just got back from seeing my cousin who I have only seen once before, several years ago. She gave me some Vegimite.
She lives in Oz and moved there 40 years ago. chatting about things and there are that many spiders in Perth WA. I was chatting to her husband who I found out is a retired FIFA ref who did some world cups. He even has his own Wiki page. So does that count as knowing someone famous? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Lennie |

With it being cold today I thought I'd use one of the Calor gas fires that came from my mothers house. Cleaned it up and serviced the burners and jets. Works OK but the gas flow to the centre burner needs tweaking as it's a bit strong. Need to find out where that is set. Still I have two full 26Kg gas pots so "free" heat. :)

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
I know that home emergency cover is a bit of a con but just had renewal notice for British Gas 4 (gas, heating, electrics, plumbing, drains) going from £690 to £833.
Zoiks!!! So I phone BG and get offers of £580 (no excess) and £380 (£60 excess), went with the latter as £450 difference (to renewal) would be a lot of calls. I know I could get cheaper or rely on pay as need but it's nice to know things will get fixed. It's just saving that much with a simple call. |
Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
I never bother with stuff like that, touch wood not been a problem for 22 years, has it saved you money since you started doing it, if not maybe the money not spent would have paid for a car?
I recommend using the money saving site Topcashback you can save alot of money if you go through there if the place you used is on there. |

It's also more convenience to just have one number for most needs. We do have a local plumber but he doesn't do the drains. We have an electrician who is very good. |
Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
The only thing i have had to do is call a plumber out 3-4 times to fix a few things like broken radiator valves and a faulty gas valve on the boiler, total cost is probably £300-400 over the last 22 years.
Hopefully it will continue like this in the future. |

Protyre are really good for prices and our depot price was lower than web. On a 16" for the Mondeo I chose the Falken F310 ECOrun. A grade wet stop, B for "fuel" (resistance) and 67dB noise so quiet as well. The same tyre on larger wheels is no where near as good. |

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
My happy thought is my Dad seems to be finally accepting the new me as trust me I was tested to my limit the other day and basically I stood my ground as what my sister wanted and I suppose to a degree my Dad since he was the one asking, was for me to do what the next kin should be doing and I just said no that is not happening what does she want Dad the title and no work sorry it does not work like with me anymore and IMO it is not fair for me to expected to do it all again, with the attitude Oh don't worry weenie will do it, no she won't.
I'm have not totally taken a step back but what has now changed is if and when I apply for stuff for Dad I make it quite clear on all the applications that although I am the one applying on behalf of Mr XXXXXXXX please refer to next of kin details as they are to be the first port of contact and I will be honest I think this panics my Dad and worries her. It is sad because I would have did it all again in a heart beat it if they had both treated me right but it is what it is her out my life (my choice I know) but it's for the best even if it does make things harder for them I need to focus what is best for the majority of my family and not just two. Another happy thought is my eldest let it slip that I'm going to love what hubby has bought me for our 30th wedding anniversary on the 4th of March. @ Jo thank you x |

I do vividly remember that my first post on here was very nearly my last. I entered a discussion about the RED BUTTON - a very hot topic at the time. Helpfully, or so I thought, I repeated what I had been told on a phone call and got soundly laughed at by a 'Highish Repped' member for believing what I had been told. Would never have posted again if I hadn't been defended by a couple of even 'Higher Repped' lovely guys who become two of my early friends on the forum. :) |

The support I have from my mother in law, future daughter in law, my boy's and of course hubby.
I'm truly grateful to have been blessed with such wonderful people in my life. I nipped by son's & his fiancée house to see how it was doing and it's coming along fine it looks to me to be now wind and water tight as the garage door is now on. |

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
I'm adding a new 2T HDD to my XP SP3 network media server PC but the existing SATA I controller won't accept the SATA III drive. Strangely the two existing drives: A 128GByte SSD for the system and a 1/2T HDD for data are both SATA III and work fine. So I've left those drives where they are and I got a used twin SATA PCI card off ebay for £10 delivered and it signs on during POST correctly.
However XP puts an exclamation mark next to it as it needs a driver. I have been looking for a suitable download. Couldn't find one for/from the card's manufacturer (They went bust a couple of years ago) but have eventually found a suitable one by searching by the chip number on the board. (INIC-1620). Lots of places offering the driver but only if you install their driver manager which I'm certainly NOT going to do. I eventually found a site where the actual driver file could be downloaded from. (very obscurely hidden) It's installed fine and the device now appears properly. Just a few more steps to be able to comission the drive. :) |

Not been on much lately for one reason or an other but my happy thought is my son and his fiancée moved into their new house/home last Thursday and I must say it is becoming a lovely home really fast, I'm so proud of them both as they have worked and saved extremely hard for everything they have.
My youngest is just waiting for his provisional driving license, what I will say it's shocking the price of driving lessons. Oh and did I forget to mention I now have a fluffy granddaughter she is a Golden Retriever and is now 10 weeks old. |
