You can't get the Hub 3.0 as an existing customer at present.

Funny you should say that. Been a customer for best part of five years with a Superhub 1.

Decided to take my speed upgrade last week. Scheduled for today, self install.

And what should turn up? A shiny new Superhub 3.

Generally all new customers get 1, and people with old hardware do too if they have a SH1 and went for 200mbit as there is no config for 200mbit on that.

Not 100% sure on 2 and 2ac though.

What firmware version do regular, non triallist, customers get; do the leds work as expected, or still wrong as explained here?

Normal customers are on the old firmware which is quite buggy. The lights work as they should though, or at least might do, only the white power light is on after boot up and during normal operation

Is the SH3 a new device? OK I know it is to Virgin Media but I thought it had been on the market for other cable operators for some time? So I am surprised the firmware is as buggy as reported. Or have Virgin Media decided to release a customised version and broken it again as they did with the SH1. In which case lessons were not learned.

The SH3 is an 85Mhz variant of the Arris TG2492S, which was announced in May 2014.

On the market yes, but mainly used by Liberty Global UPC and Virgin networks across Europe.

Naturally it's customised with (locked down) GUI and configs for Virgin and UPC's network backends and the CMTS they use, now including Arris CMTS.

In my opinion it's mostly that backend setup they need to get right to allow any cable modem features that are not currently working perfectly to work right, rather than the cable modem firmware itself.

They need to unklock all the slugged router features so that people can use them without going to the expense of an externalk router.

Assuming the SH3 is working as intended, what are the advantages of the device relative to the SH2ac on a current residential 200Mbps tier, for example? I don't mean what it can do in the future or the internal implementation differences, I mean an end-user experience difference. Curious ..

The VM (and LG) supplied kit is always going to have a subset of functionality compared to standalone routers.

I can't see that ever changing.

If you've already got a 2ac there is pretty much no reason to change to the Hub 3.0 as far as I'm aware.

If your in a 16 channel area i would assume that would reduce congestion in said areas compared to the Superhub 2AC

More channels, future proof (for now) I guess

Now this is interesting :) Is the main, current, potential benefit, assuming the CMTS upgrade work has been done?

There's absolutely no need to go killing yourself to get a SH3 if you have a SH2 right now. Even bonding extra channels isn't going to make a difference on your 200mbit connection, you'll either get your 200mbit or your area will be congested and you won't.

If/when it becomes important to have a SH3, it'll be due to a speed uplift and Virgin will put you on one anyway.
