Anyone have any ideas????

Using a Home200 cable modem by the way.

Maybe your not actually on 4mb yet, try rebooting your modem and that may solve it.

hi all, anyone know when the nottinghams gonna be sorted yet, i get the odd burst in download rate every so often but only for about 2 mins, i've rebooted the modem plenty of times but still don't give me the 4mb, well any info would be nice
oh and by the way come on england !!!:hyper:

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Do I have to reboot or does clicking the reset button in the admin web interface do the same thing - modem's in the attic and I am not, so rebooting it is not easy...

sway_light 17-06-2006 19:38

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

all you need to do really is to turn off the power to the modem so if you can just get to the power point it's that simple leave it off for 5 mins and then just plug back in and it should work if the upgrade has been done in your area

brainier 17-06-2006 19:41

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

But that means getting a ladder, opening the loft, squeezing in through the loft hatch, trying not to fall between the joists and then powering off the modem. If clicking reset in the web admin page does the same then I don't need to bother, but if I did all the above and it has not been upgraded, then I need to do it all again in a week or so's time...

As far as I know you will have to turn it off... but I think 5 mins is a little over the top... try 15 seconds ;)

If you have an isolation circuit in the attic you could trip that instead of crawling around... but I guess you prob won't have that, so time to get crawling... of course you DO know that if you go crawling they won't have upgraded you.... but if you don't they will have upgraded you... :D

And with the time wasted typing that you could already have ther ladder set up ;)

May i ask why it's in the attic though?

How about switching off the mains supply or is that in the attic too. sounds like a strange setup if it is. Lol you could always ask the meter reader next time he's in the attic.:D:D:D

A couple of years ago an engineer was telling me that 10% of customers on analogue services were using 90% of available bandwidth, allowing for changes in proportions since that still leaves a sizeable amount of bandwidth to be freed up.

That isn't the bandwidth that's used on your cable modem really. He's talking more about that raw bandwidth available to your home, which includes all the bandwidth getting soaked up by digital and analogue TV. Without changes bandwidth freed up by switching off the analogue services is not available to cable modems.

Guess what! Still 2mb!

Whereabouts are the Derby folk who have been upgraded? Spondon (which is ex-cw I think) here....

All of Derby is Ex-C&W. The upgrade is done on individual routers on the ntl side and there are a few feeding each area.

See, without wanting to get drawn into arguments with people again. It may well be a "free" upgrade. But at the end of the day it merely starts to drag NTL somewhere toward the same speeds as other providers give for less money.

Same here in stoke. Anybody else think NTL will have a mad rush to get it finished? Theres still many major cities left and only 11days for it to be completed. Hope it doesn't cause any network overloads.

I recon it will overload the network - I'm on the 10meg tier - I never get above 8meg and during the evenings get around 2-5 meg.

Yep same here, nothing in Harrogate (connected thru Leeds Proxy).

At least im still getting a decent '2mb'.

I starting to wonder if the deadline will get moved back into July? Im no expert on such issues, but to me there does seem to be quite a gap between areas recieving the upgrades.

I'm suprised they haven't done Peterborough yet. We usually get these upgrades pretty early and I've never had any issues with speed. Always got the full 10mbit and now getting full 2mbit.

I wasn't that bothered till I downgraded from 10 to 2mbit, but it feels painfully slow now :p

What is that you dont understand by the phrase "To be completed by the END of June". Changing the billing is part of the process, the process isnt yet complete and nor is June!

Plus, everyone on 2mb/4mb are still paying £24.99 so it's not like they've hiked up your bill first and then upgraded you later and you're 'loosing out', you're still getting what you initially paid for which was 2mb. 4mb is a bonus and will be available when NTL are ready to roll it out 'by the end of June' as has been repeatedly mentioned over and over.

Regarding the billing saying 4mb, that will be the bill for JULY i'm guessing as they bill you in advance, even so it makes no difference to the bill as all they've changed is it saying '4mb' as opposed to '2mb' while leaving the price EXACTLY the same!

Indeed, i usally get around 1.9mb (stable) connection in peterborough.

Connection has been going up and down latly tho speed wise but i'm sure thats down to the upgrading of the network etc. Nightmare for online gaming hehe.

Sadly, with some customers, yes they do need to. It would confuse half of them, being on 4mb and still getting billed as 2mb... :dunce:

I wouldn't know about email, as I don't collect my NTL email anyway. There was the post on the support page (or somewhere on their site) that specified 2meg becoming 4 etc... I am assuming it'll be on the last day of the month, or even half way through next to be honest... not great at communication, are they?

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I would class myself as an above average Internet user - one of those people your parents and mates ring up to go and fix thier PC when they download some nasty spyware... Now I would obviously know about the upgrades as I went along to said 'support page' and saw the info, but really is average 'Joe Bloggs' NTL internet user going to do that?? Doubt it.

I think NTL most probably did that on purpose.

A: To cover thier backs if the said June deadline is missed.

B: To impress the vast majority of users that are totally clueless as to the free upgrades taking place - and yes before some smart **** jumps down my neck asking if I indeed have proof - yes I asked around the locals on my street using the same service. They were ALL totally clueless!

I've had 10mbit for half price for the last 3 months and not once did it drop below max speed due to NTL. I've always had a really good connection with them here (PE1). Unfortunately I'll be moving in a few months and I don't think we'll get NTL, will have to use some nasty DSL provider with caps and traffic shaping

I had an email telling me about the free upgrade and many others around the country had the same email. Perhaps yours was cauight by a spam filter.

Well as for email notifications. NTL have long since stopped sending me emails notifying me of my direct debit payments. They were like clockwork at one time - every month my email arrived telling me how much was due. But not had anything like that for months.

So I think it's safe to say I haven't had anything at all mentioning upgrades. Have to say I did have an amusing chat with some indian chap when I called tech support about downgrading (I didn't realise you called CS) anyway, he told me he could switch my speed down but would need to keep charging me the same amount each month as for 10meg and was that any use to me :) yeah, ummm, that would have been wicked - thanks!

Taking a guess they have only upgraded about 5% of their customers and we are already approaching the later end of june, i highly doubt everyone will be upgraded by the end of this month, there's just too much work to be done. I think the majority will be done by mid July.

I suggest changing your signature to "whinge whinge, when can I get 4meg in <insert postcode>".... that way you can write anything and always be on topic ;)

Some other people I know in my area (Farnborough, Hants. Comes under the Guildford francise) mentioned that they had received their upgrade so I reset my modem. A speed test showed i hadnt received my upgrade so I checked the log and noticed

060620205926 4-Error X501.28 Unit Update - Not updating. This image is not for this platform.

I have an old Motorola Surfboard 3100 and I cant say i've noticed this before (its been a trusty peice of kit for the past 6 years). Does anyone have any ideas as to whats going on, is it related to the upgrade?

Ah, that explains why HG1 is not upgraded... they were waiting for you to get your router.... goo old NTL looking to kill 2 birds with 1 stone ;) Should've known there was a logical explanation :D

Wed, 21 Jun 2006 06:17:54 GMT

1st 512K took 1093 ms = 468.4 KB/sec, approx 3860 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1094 ms = 468 KB/sec, approx 3856 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
4th 512K took 1297 ms = 394.8 KB/sec, approx 3253 Kbps, 3.18 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3721 Kbps, 3.64 Mbps

Keep checking the maintenance logs for upgrades. We had about a week's work done before the new speed arrived.

Creeping slowly eastwards then, but Norwich still seems to be beyond its reach. Does this mean I have to wait until the 28th - or could tomorrow prove to be the day? That is (and I'm sorry if the question has already been answered), is the upgrade taking place day by day or only once a week?
