This is not aimed at anyone in particular but after reading this thread I can't help but feel sick to death of people quoting this FREE UPGRADE. What a load of rubbish, yes we've had an upgrade but boy are we paying for it. £38(soo n to be £35) is a lot to pay for an Internet connection by todayââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s standard. NTL are not the only company to upgrade their customers.... and here's the tricky bit, it's not out of the goodness of their hearts, it's a commercial decision to keep up with other ISP's. Do you seriously think NTL would upgrade their customerââ‚à ƒ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s Internet connection if no one else was doing it. If NTL did not upgrade they would be left behind and people would move elsewhere. Stop calling it a FREE UPGRADE like we should be eternally grateful.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm really pleased with my connection and the service has always been great for me. It just gets to me that when some people moan, for whatever reason, the only defence is 'shut up you have a free upgrade'

Anyway, it's Christmas soon. Merry Christmas. :D

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

One of the problems with the cost of internet connections is that many users have been so used to free this that and the other together with services being supplied at under cost price that they fail to realise what a realistic price should be. Over the past few years most ISP's have been fighting for market share and have used price points way below cost in order to tempt customers to join them. Customers have not only had below cost subscriptions but have also had very little contention affecting their service. A culture has grown up which believes that you should always get "the speed that you pay for". With the new 10 Mb service you are getting posts which complain that they are only getting 8Mb or so which they think is caused by something wrong with their modem or the NTL network. As more and more customers are upgraded, particularly those on the lower tiers this is only going to impact more with 10 Mb hardly ever being achievable.

I can remember paying £50 for a 512k connection and now I'm paying £38 for 20 times that. That's progress, but then technology has moved on since then and costs are reduced due to mass rollout and compertition.

I've never thought once why and I not getting the full 10mbit everytime I download something. The way I look at it now is that I have an internet connection, pure and simple. Speed really doesn't play in to it anymore. I won't be one of the people scrambling to be first for the next upgrade when it turns up.

To me it looks as though NTL are really making moves in order to provide people with a better internet 'experience'. Unfortunately you are always going to get people moaning about it no matter what happens.

But it is free! You were paying £38 for 3 meg, now you're paying £38 for up to 10 meg. You're not being charged for the upgarde, so it surely must be free?

Okay, I've heard in this thread I can get my 2MB upto it's 10MB speed for the same price as I'm paying now with the online upgrade, but can someone care to tell me what upgrade service this is I have on my screen?

The one and only service I can upgrade to is: BUND03 Service

Is this the service I am supposed to choose to get 10MB @ £25 a month?

Or have I read something wrong? :erm:

Yes of course but only because NTL have to keep up with any other ISP and the services they offer.

IF NTL did not perform upgrades I would of gone elsewhere ages ago. I would of gone to an ISP that offers higher speed for the same cost or less. It doesn't matter to me what speed other ISP's were offering a year ago, it's what they offer now and that’s the same for NTL. It's irrelevant that NTL upgrade for free because if they didn't everyone would go elsewhere.

It’s just competition. In less than a year no doubt most exchanges will offer 8mbit as a standard product. Some offering up to 22/24mbit - I just think people are making a big deal out of the 'free upgrades' and saying that we should be grateful.

Are you paying any more for the upgraded speed? No.. So, therefore the upgrade is free. Why it is free is irrelevant. I suspect if NTL didn't have any competition, we'd probably still be on 64K broadband, or even dial up, but they aren't the only company to operate this way. ALL companies do. Look how Ofcom has had to push BT first to roll out ADSL to areas outside major citiies. Sure, they upgrade speeds now, but that's not out of the goodness of their heart. It's for the same reason NTL do. They cannot afford not to.

Hey Alfie Moon,

From what I remember I called Customer Services (0800 052 2000) and asked for a SABS account to be set up for me.

They then issued me with the PIN number over the phone and I put that into the online registration system.

Its a freephone number - so do it during your break and you should be fine.

(Not that I'm your employer and have the authority to say you won't get fired for doing it!)

Phil.

Electrolyte,

Upgrading to BUND03 will cause you to be billed for £38 per month. Only people on the 3 meg tier are being upgraded at the moment. Those on 1 or 2 megs will be upgraded next year.

If you want to get 10 megs you'll have to pay the extra per month.

Phil.

If I was renting a TV 5 years ago I'd be pretty appalled if I wasn't getting a better TV today for the same money. Things change, better things get cheaper, you can't keep comparing prices to how things used to be. If I spent £1000 on a TV today I would expect a nice thin, high resolution LCD/plasma, 5 years ago I would have got a huge, low res CRT. It's the same with the internet today you should get more for your money than you did 5 years ago.

This "free upgrade" business is nonsense, it's just moving along in-line with progress.

I agree totally, plus of course it remains to be seen if it is *free* for us STB users who have to swap....

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Well here is my 10mb upgrade story....

Just phoned the 0800 052 2000

Got through to a very nice helpful CS and gave them all my details and that I wanted 10mb and was on a STB.

Was immediately told that I would have to have a cable modem installed as the STB couldnt handle the speeds required.

I asked whether I would be charged for this and she checked and assured me becuase it wasnt a seperate install of a cablemodem (like it might have been if I didnt have telephone, tv and internet with the stb) it would definitely be free of charge and I should hopefully be upgraded this thursday.

She also had to setup a new account for me, as the cable modem is billed seperately. She said due to an issue with new pin numbers being assigned (the automated voice had warned of that issue too) I would have to wait for a letter to arrive with my new internet pin number. She also said it was probably best to carry on using my Broadband through my stb until I was certain the cable modem was working and my pin had arrived.. and then to phone then to cancel my stb internet.

So if all goes to plan things should be cool (without a £50 charge)... I guess I just have to wait and see....

I think that the point being missed by a lot of people is that most ISP's are selling broadband packages at below cost or with a very small profit margin in order to build up market share. At the moment speeds are increasing rapidly and subscription charges are lowering. You have to question whether these are sustainable services at the prices being offered today, especially if they are offering unlimited traffic. The faster that speeds increase the more chance there is of contention being an issue. Just think about the size of pipes that some ISP's use and how quickly they will become saturated if customers try to max out their connections. There is a vast difference between the 512k that most ADSL customers had a year or so ago and the up to 24 Mb connection that some can get today. My guess is that you will find that you will have to pay higher prices if you want to use more bandwidth, no matter which ISP you choose.

I have no doubts that ISP's price their products near the margin but there are some that make millions in profits. If ISP's only made £0.50p profit per customer per month people like BT / NTL / Wanadoo make enough money to keep them in business. At the end of the day customers will go where they can get a good fast service for the right price.

My last half hour roughly:

I just phoned NTL CS - 0800 052 2000 - option 2 Held 15 mins

Hello. I'd like to get the 10Meg broadband please.

Ok..let me just check your accout...Right to receive the 10MB you'll need a cable modem as the STB won't handle it, i'll just check when the next available appointment is for you......that'll be next Tuesday Mr ***** in the afternoon between 12-6pm.

Excellent, would this add to my bill at all or cost me anything?

No sir, it would be at no cost to yourself.

Excellent, thanks for your help.

Thanks sir. goodbye.

Bu Bye.

I really don't know what to make of it? I've read all over the site £50 fees, but I asked twice and definitely won't cost me anything.

Btw, this woman wasn't scottish like the last 300 calls have been, maybe scotland diverted my call. :Yikes:

I got upgraded from 2MB to 10MB last night and I've just done a power down on my SB3100 and it's running at about 5.8MB. There is a post earlier in this thread that mentions a firmware upgrade for the SB3100 so I'll just sit tight for a little while.

Hopefully it won't be too long and I'll reset my modem once a week. If I haven't got to 10MB by the new year I'll pester NTL for a new one.

Well I just tried to get the 10Mbit upgrade (Sammy) and was told I would be charged £50!!! :(

After reading the comments here I might have another go at CS and see if they would be polite enough to install a free SACM (I have all three packages) - wish me luck! :)

p.s. What would would happen if I downgraded to 2Mbit for a month then requested the 'new' 10Mbit service in January? Would NTL have to supply me with a new modem?

HiI phoned NTL last night, to ask about swopping out to a modem from a STB, lady told em it would cost £50. Explained that i had been phoning during the month about the 10mb upgrade. Also explained that if i had know then it would cost me to get the modem i would have ordered it then. She said hold on and put me through to sales and got a new modem ordered for me to be installed on monday. Free of charge.Eastwood

Thats a good question, as after talking to CS this morning, I downgraded to 2mb after they refused to let me have the modem for nowt...

Does this also mean that I am signing up to another 12 month contract by lowering the speed?.

I've just been on to CS about getting a new cable modem to replace my Surfboard 3100. First phone call I was given the phone number for the Xbox Live(?) support (0845 650 0101) aftere being put on hold. I phoned again and the second the agent (Chris) told me (after being on hold again) that I should be getting the full speeds and transferred me to the cable modem fault support people, well, transferred and currently waiting 10+ minutes in the queue. Now discovered that they've transferred me to the faults who don't do broadband support apparently. :(

At this rate I might even consider paying the £50. :Yikes:

Yes that's the same as mine. Here's the config page:

Network Access : Enabled
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 bps
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1

Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm100_ntl0002.cpr

And here's my speed test results:

Tue, 06 Dec 2005 19:58:11 GMT
1st 128K took 94 ms = 1394383 Bytes/sec = approx 11601 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec

Ha ha ha
Ntl is way better than the other services offering high bandwidth. If you do a speed test on one of the so-called higher services elsewhere you will very rarely get what you are paying for. Check their conntention ratios and this will explain it.
Moaning folks - please please go elsewhere and try these other services and report back here - I can't wait to hear about it!

It doesn't matter to me what speed other ISP's were offering a year ago, it's what they offer now and thatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s the same for NTL. It's irrelevant that NTL upgrade for free because if they didn't everyone would go elsewhere.

Itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s just competition. In less than a year no doubt most exchanges will offer 8mbit as a standard product. Some offering up to 22/24mbit - I just think people are making a big deal out of the 'free upgrades' and saying that we should be grateful.

:Yikes:

I spent about 45mins on the phone to NTL and went through about 4 people before being told by an Indian guy that my 3100 would support the 10MB connection. A recent speed test has put it at about 5.8MB, so better than the 2MB I had before so I'm happy enough at the moment.

If things haven't improved by January I'll be looking to NTL for a new modem.

I agree 10mbit is great. I wasn't saying otherwise. All I was saying in my previous posts, is I'm fed up with people going on about FREE UPGRADES when all NTL are doing is keeping up with everyone else.

FYI when I do a speed test it's anywhere between 5mbit to 10mbit. I don't really care. My recent posts had nothing to do with that.

at 5.5kb/sec constant (24/7) download speeds (more or less the max you could get out of a 56.2k modem), over a 30 day period you could download:

14256000 kb or 13921.875 mb or 13.5955810546875 gb of information.

So sure, it was technically unlimited but 5 years ago you could only physically download 13.5gb of stuff over dial up.

Now we can download (with the cap) 5.5 times as much information per month, but at the insanely stupid 250x faster (or more).

So 250x the speed, 5.5x the amount we can download.

If they had given us 250x the amounts we could download it would be 3,375 gigabytes (3.4 TB) of stuff.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I heard from a little birdie now that ntl have managed to saturate all their linx ports, and have no plans to upgrade them in the near future and rather just hoping the traffic level drops (they havent responded to other isp's who queuried ntl about the saturation so it is assumed they have no plans), so they think with upgrading burst speed upto 10 times for some customers, double the cap and with mass tv streaming on our doorstep traffic will drop :) So I got news for you people we are all in for a surprise unless they change their policy on peering capacity. If a speedtest reports a low speed it does not make it inaccurate or mean its the speedtest server's fault, it is much more likely a peering congestion between ntl and that server. Robin walker and paul's speedtest are simply traffic that doesnt leave ntl's network and isnt an indication of ntl's true internet performance, adslguide speedtest is somewhat more reliable for that, but a lot of speedtest's will use a proxy so that will affect results as well. If you want a true speedtest login to a linux ftp mirror and start downloading an iso.

sorry whats reciprocol mean?

If you mean peering as in they dont pay for the traffic passing over it, that may or may not be the case I dont know. But the size of the port they would be responsible for.

What do you think is causing the traffic to come to a near standstill during peak hours? Person gets 10mbit, immedialty goes off to speed test sites or downloads a ISO to see if they have indeed got the rated 10mbit. The download might come in at 5-8Mbit and the person is not happy, so off they go to another site and grab another file etc etc etc.

4th 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec

and the modem config thingy reads:

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 3072000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 300000 bps
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr

maybe we're not quite enabled here, I don't know and I don't really feel inclined to stand in a freezing cold phone box to find out from Indian Support Centre that I'm to do the usual 'reboot everything' procedure, especially when it' been done as a regular practice around these parts because I like to live in hope that the speed fairy does visit this particular area and waves her magic wand. On the other hand... reading posts about awful speed on 10mb, I don't know if I'm better off this way and should be happy with my 3mb connection.
Yup, I'm using the silver armpit 120... time for an upgrade if nothing happens soon? I dunno.. I'm not technical enough to understand it all.
I'm concerned because the radio show I host needs a good stable connection and if there's too many probs with 10mb... well.. I'm better as I am... aren't I?
I'm also considering networking the two computers there are here... (as opposed to switching the connection between the two computers which means giving my partner a long cold hard stare to "hand the ****ing connection over.. NOW!!" ;))
That.. along with everything else.. I don't know what to do.. lol! help?!

Either way, things have a habit of sorting themselves out... well, so my logic tells me. One thing is for sure... 'the power of 10'.... 10 what? 10 phone calls to CS??? it's feeling like that here!

Ref Point 1, the speeds will effect (I think) all users from 1-10mbit because you are all on the Same ubr? Its crap at the moment as everybody is Cannig there connections with this new found Speed you see !!

Ref Point 2 - Your on a Home connection, no Guarantee of any service due to the small price you pay. The Hosting of a radio station thingy anyhow is UPLOAD not download (they download it) so you will go from 300k to 500K with new connection and thus be better. Since I have had 10mbit the Upload is Rock Solid @ 500K.

Ref Point 3 - You will be much better off Buyng a Router - just make sure you do not buy a ADSL One. It should have on the back a WAN Port (RJ45) and some LAN Ports (also RJ45), hile your there make sure it supports a 10/100 WAN port, a lot don't and this will restrict yout speed later. I bought Mine at Staples, a Linksys Wireless Router + PCMCIA Card - 54Mbit thing. Works fine and only cost me £50.

Most of these speedtest sites like paul's last a few seconds, if they try the linux iso I dont know how many would abort or download the whole file, but to be honest that should be irrelevant ntl have set a cap level of 75gig, they should design the network to be able to handle everyone using up to 75gig.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Motorola Surfboard SB3100i since Dec 1999: Tamworth, Staffs

Just tried CS to get a replacement modem to give me the full 10Mb/s service, and was told that I would be charged £50:
(Currently getting 5-6Mb/s due to restrictions on Ethernet port being 10Mb/s half duplex).
After further discussion, CS said they would reduce the fee to £25. CS wouldn't budge on this even though I pointed out that the modem was hired from them and not fit for the service being provided. CS kept insisting that it was a modem identified as needing an upgrade and consequently chargeable because modem was suitable for the original contract speed (In 1999)!!

Let's see. NTL upgrade to 10 Mb/s. No longer offer 3Mb/s. New customer gets new modem fit for the purpose, even with discounts in some cases.
Existing customer gets charged £25. If account was closed, Modem would NOT be collected or returned to NTL, I would be asked to dispose of it. Ask for a new account perhaps in partner's name. New modem would be supplied free of charge, may even get a discount into the bargain.

Where is the incentive for customer loyalty NTL??

Can anyone tell me if you have managed to get the 3100 replaced, how you did it and in which area you are connected to? I seem to be banging my head against a brick wall here.:bigcry:

In the real world, you would have thought NTL before they introduced 10mbit either for testing (the fabled TRAIL) or real - would have made sure there was enough bandwidth to handle XX users on 10mbit and below. No-one has answered my questions which I asked AGES ago:

How many users are connected to each UBR?
How Much bandwidth per UBR is allocated per D/L and U/L

If these figures comes forth - then we could see if the network can indeed cope but maybe they are hidden away for a reason? All I know is that Before the 10mbit every hit the shores, 2mbit was pretty consistant but as soon as the 10mbit came into force - the speeds have shot down (I have a mate few doors down still on 2mbit) and also they have gone to crap for me (10mbit). If you try the same stuff @11pm onwards - the speeds are fine - could not get any closer to 10mbit if you tried. This tells me the network cannot with-stand 10mbit - simple as that !!

In fact Ill tell you what Ill do for a week or so, Ill DO a speed test from the Irish Site, ADSL Guide and from here and produce a chart showing the speeds come flying down during the day and shooting back up at night :)

I have already sort of done this in my head, with my general downloading as I require files (they are not that big as it goes) and seen the pattern emerge since 10mbit has started - But I will chart for a while and we shall see !!

OK, I've just been on the phone to Broadband technical support to complain that although my modem configuration says I have a 10Mb connection, dowloading and running speed tests etc. shows that I have somewhere between a 3Mb and 4Mb connection.

The nice Indian lady on the other end of the phone advised me that the 10Mb speed is still in a "trial phase" and will be until the end of the year. :Yikes:

I tried to argue the case that there was a launch of the 10Mb product on Monday, but she stuck to her guns. Her manager, Raj, confirmed that we are still in a trial phase and that if the NTL web site says otherwise then the web site is wrong.

So what is the situation?

When I told him that my modem sometimes reboots, he offered to downgrade me back to 3Mb until the trial finishes

No complaints about Raj or his colleague - they were very courteous - but I'm now very confused.

You have been treated abominally.

Let me put an end to your confusion.

YOU HAVE BEEN FOBBED OFF!!

And as to the situation?

As Ntl seem to keep their staff just as well informed as their customers, no one can really say anything with any certainty. As per usual.

This 10meg upgrade was, just the usual fiasco that seemingly occurs when ever Ntl does anything.

But with the introduction of a £50.00 per customer whip round, seemingly to help them upgrade their old obsolete and worn out equipment, it is now reaching the heights of lunacy only being currently rivalled by Sony and their on going Root-Kit disaster.

The outsourcing of TS and the £50.00 whip round are yet two more ways the Ntl Corporate "PR" machine have found to further alienate their already thoroughly alienated customer base.

I expect the Clowns who thought this up have had a good laugh about it, at our expense of course.

I fully expect to receive the usual "If you don't like it then **** off!" comments, but I really don't give a ****.

Why should I?

Ntl certainly doesn't.

Well i got a letter today for upgrading, it says my set top box will handle the 5mb and it will cost me £50 to get the 10mb service.

What a rip off

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I wouldnt say it's a rip off cos that £50 is probably at 'cost' for the work involved. but as a valued customer you should get it for free if you're paying £38 a month in my opinion.

I seem to remember a while back just before the 3mb was introduced that ntl wanted to charge its customers a one-off fee of £25 for the upgrade, but they realised very quickly that the customers were having none of it! Like I said a few posts ago, phone retentions.

I've just got the letter too. Sales told me it was free.

SACM is being installed on Tuesday, so all I can do is wait till then.

Why provide us with STB's that aren't capable of running at NTL's full speed service? The speed increases must have been planned way before the Samsung boxes started getting installed.

I agree that NTL must recoup some costs giving out 100's/1000's of SACM's where a STB was adequate before must be hugely expensive - but being told different stories by different depts or sometimes the same depts is amateurish to say the least.

Hi All

I got the 10MB upgrade the other day and using IE downloading from the net runs at a nice 600-900k but as soon as I try conntecting to any news server (premium) my d/l goes right down to 250k.

Does anyone know if NTL has capped Usenet speeds?

So is BB+ totally free to all 2mb and 10 mb customers now? http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/tiermigration/ seems to suggest it is, but I was just on the phone to NTL downgrading back to 2mbit and was told it was only free for the first month. So which is it, totally free, or just a free trial?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I've just received the £50 letter myself. I think it's daft that they recently changed the box so it could handle 3Mb but are now saying that they need to change it again so it can handle 10Mb. After the idiot who changed the box last time didn't do it right and we had several days of no connection and a runaround with NTL's customer service, no one's going to change my box again - especially if I have to pay for the priviledge.

What's doubly-silly is that they're saying that the price will come down from £37.99 to £34.99. Why? That £3 per month difference works out to £36 per year. Why not leave the price at £37.99 for a year and upgrade all boxes for "free"? They'll still get their pound of flesh.

It's almost feels like a con. They wave around this £50 upgrade fee, hoping it'll discourage enough customers so that they'll be limited to 5Mb - but they'll be able to say it's the customer's "choice" and happily go on to advertise their 10Mb service all over the place. A pointer to this is that their webpage actually says "In general we would not recommend an upgrade...".

It reminds me of when the purportedly "free" upgrade to 3Mb came along. It was £34.99 per month but they upped the price to £37.99 two months before upgrading to 3Mb. That way they could happily say that the upgrade was "for free" when, of course, we were actually paying more.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Hey all,

I'm currently subscribed to the 3Mb/sec NTL broadband package and was looking forward to the "free upgrade" to 10Mb/sec. My modem is the NTL Home 120 (Ambit is it?) and I have been told that this modem should be able to download at 10Mb/sec with a firmware upgrade.

After noticing a slight speed increase I checked the speed at various different broadband speed test sites and was getting the full 512Kb/sec upload (roughly) but only just over 4Mb/sec download. So I checked the modem using the 192.168.100.1 address and in the Operation Configuration section I have the following listed:

Network Access: Enabled
Maximum Downstream Data Rate: 10240000 bps (seems right)
Maximum Upstream Data Rate: 512000 bps (seems right)
Maximum Number of CPEs: 1
Software Upgrade File Name: ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr (this is the firmware upgrade I assume?)
Software Upgrade AdminStatus: ignoreProvisoningUpgrade (im not sure on this at all)
Software Upgrade OperStatus: completeFromMgt

After reading through this thread I noticed one partcular user with the NTL Home 100 modem had posted their Operation Configuration details and it was very similar bar the .cpr file name (ntlhm100 instead of ntlhm120), but also the Upgrade AdimStatus which wasnt on ignore but allow and the Upgrade OperStatus was listed as completeFromProvisioning. This person was getting the full 10Mb/sec service.

I obviously rang NTL tech support and they gave me the stock "its only a trial" and "its advertised as *upto* 10Mb/sec so you will not always get that speed". To me that sounded like a fob off. I assume my modem has been updated and I have tried various resets of my modem and router with no joy so far. What needs to be done and are the differences on my Operation Configuration screen the cause of the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Rang Up last week about the upgrade to the 10mb service and was told it wasnt available in my area yet. and that my broadband monthly charge would be halved untill i got the upgrade
today i recived a letter that the upgrade was now possible but that i could only recieve the 5mb upgrade on the set top box and that tech support would do this for me.
After speaking with tech support they said they couldnt do it and that the 5mb speed couldnt be reached through the set top box and if it can then costomer services have to upgrade me to the 10mb service but i shouldnt have to pay the £50 charge. I dont see why i should have to pay the £50 charge anyway as i was told my broadband payments would be halved for the next 2 months untill i could get the 10mb service. which works out at £50 anyway.
rang back sales and spoke to another person who i explained it all to, he said he would upgrade my service to 5mb while i was on the phone, i then checked to see if it was at 5mb but it wasnt, he then just put me through to a tech advisor again who told me the same thing as the first tech advisor, he then ran through my broadband and messing about with internet sites and speed tests only to tell me i was on the 3mb service which i already knew, i was on the phone to the 2nd technition for 50 minutes fiddling with my connection to get no where only to be told i had to speak to costomer services again. so i played hell.
What gets me is i told the technition that i had been on the phone for 50 minutes and he just said you havent.
Now I was told my bill for broadband would be halved for the next 2 months, which works out at about £50 which is what they want for the upgrade anyway. the tech guy stayed on the line while i talked to the sales woman and butted in a few times in my defence, it was funny at one point because she said i will upgrade you to the 10mb service now and the pakistani technition said "Thats it you do it, stupid" I had to laugh in my sleeve.
Anyway she said she would credit me back the 2 months i was promised which was 50 quid and that i could get the upgrade but i had to go through the online page. So now i wait until 15th December apparently.

What a nightmare......:Yikes:

On 3Mb here Samsung STB.

Got the letter this morning too. Nice timing, asking me for £50 the same day they make an £817million bid for Virgin Mobile.....lol.....who does their PR :)

Anyway, going to sit this one out I think - go up to 5Mb at some point, though not clear exactly how or when - it just says "December" in the letter. Get the £3 a month price reduction - wow thanks..:p: and see if NTL are forced to move to a "free" upgrade of "their" equipment as from what I can see, the competitors are upping to 8Mb and reducing to the £20 level.

I take it anyone paying the £50 still won't own the boxes? £50 for engineer swopout time? Where did the £50 come from? :)

Happy days....

Hongman read here: http://www.ntlworld.com/stb

I just called CS to see if they could upgrade me from 3Mb to the 10(5)Mb service on my Samsung. They tried to send the upgrade signal but no dice - not accepting in my area.

Official line seems to be that its still in "pilot" mode for stb users and all existing 3Mb users will be auto upgraded by end of December. They said SACM users were more likely to be able to get upgraded over the phone as the technology is different.

C'est la vie.....

I personally would not pay £50 for another modem, I think that's a total rip-off! and most people on here know that. What happens when they upgrade the 10mb to whatever it will be next? another £50 fee because the new ntl:250's wont hack it?

Phone retentions through customer services and tell them calmly (hard I know!) that you are off to greener pastures if this situation can not be sorted out in some way or another. Then leave it to the nice people there to offer you a deal. I almost guarentee that you'll walk away from the phone better off. All the people I know, including me! Who have done this are happy as a pig in pig pooh! Because we are now on a much better deal.

I dont know what's wrong with us British folk? We just seem to lie down and take it up the you know what. It's not fair is it? Then take control of the situation/your life, and call retentions! At the end of the day, retentions are there to retain as many "I'm off to greener pasture" customers as possible.

Now for the small print in layman's terms... Don't blame me for anything negetive that might accure through you being hyped-up by this post. you alone are responsible for your actions! ;)

This link http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/cm/ suggests that it is only 3COM and Surfboard modems that need to be replaced.

Got this response from CS when I asked how they could justify charging SOME people for Modems, and not others:

Thank you for your recent e-mail as far as we are aware as a new contract is made when changing to a Cable Modem an installation charge is made however Sales may offer discounted installation. Please contact our sales team on 0800 183 1234.

Think I will stick to my 2meg now anyway, as the whole thing is such a farce.

why on earth do STB users have to pay £50 in order for us to use 10mb to its proper potential? we didnt ask for our internet to be placed on a STB in the first place, so why on earth do we as the customer have to pay to be placed on a SACM in order for us to be able to use 10mb like everyone else who has a SACM in the first place.

Listen to this one...I phoned CS got through to a lovely Indian lady who told me that there was a fault in my area that started today hence I couldnt get 10mbit, I said I'm on an old modem, she said ''please sir wait until the 23rd December or until the fault is over today" So I said ok on the 23rd December, EVERYONE on EVERY modem will get 10mbit? She said yes sir everyone will LOL. So I referred her to http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/cm/ she then paused and said, yes that is right sir, but if you please wait until the 23rd December you will get 10mbit. Funny how my modem is jammed smack on 5.5Mbit and others report 10mbit in my area o.O

Funny you should say that because I couldn't have both when I asked. As I wanted the TV package I was refused a SACM because I could get 'the' (not a different tier of) BB service...........

Guess I was lucky as I had BB installed first, so got my SB3100, and then a couple of years later decided to get the TV service as well.

Now need to convince them to change the 3100. I think I'll wait for the initial hype to calm down and once the NTL phone lines are cooled down a little I'll speak to them.

Why should changing from a STB to a SACM involve a new contract? When you sign up for broadband there is only the option to select a speed tier, not a method of delivery. There are several models of STB and several models of SACM and NTL decide which one you are allocated. The customer should not be penalised because NTL have supplied a delivery method which cannot cope with the services they are offering. As I understand things it is a change in billing systems when moving from STB to SACM but that should be NTL's problem, not the customers and the customer should not be expected to pay for it or be tied into a new contract.

You are correct in everything you say, I am aware we are all contended at the ubr, and you can test that irish site and your speeds should be good they are for me, but what I am getting at is ntl do not have one big pipe out to the internet it doesnt work like that instead they have dozens of pipes that go out to different parts of the internet. So that irish speedtest site for instance seems to have a uncongested peering pipe as it is pretty much max speed most parts of the day but other routes are abysmal, I have done things like test my speed on paul's speedtester and found that to be way above what I am getting so it ruled out my ubr. My reports are consistent with what gamers are reporting for game servers located in the same region and the source server has capacity spare galore, with user's on other isp's in the uk having no issues whatsoever.

I am seeing some improvements slowly tho on other routes, but unfortenatly there are also declines on some routes so I dont know what to make of it yet, but all I am thinking right now is that once more ntl have done upgrades to users before to their own network and underestimated the impact, it is a repeated mistake they should have learnt from.
