Come on, Den. This is welcome news. After all the wingeing about the costs of pay tv and lack of UHD, we get an announcement out of the blue that we have a new sports channel in UHD at no extra cost - and still you are not satisfied!

I don't watch sport either and so, like you, I'm waiting for the non-sport UHD channels to start appearing. I understand that other UHD channels are being negotiated with VM at present but, apart from Insight, I don't know what the others are.

I would be very surprised if we didn't get Sky UHD channels (albeit at extra cost probably) but I think we will end up having to wait until our existing contract with Sky ends next year.

While this appearing is progress for virgin and glad to see, I’ll only be fully excited when it’s something I want to watch, but over a year for sky content in UHD is unfair when they can ask to renegotiate contracts if they want

There will be other UHD content available besides Sky.

Who knows, maybe VM are negotiating with Sky right now, but I do think there will be no deal until 2019.

If you think about it, BT's deal with Sky doesn't start until 2019 either, so this is not necessarily Virgin's fault that we have to wait.

I know it doesn't, but nonetheless the deal for extra channels negotiated between BT and Sky does not commence until 2019. I am sure that BT would prefer an earlier date!

BT haven't got any linear channels as part of the deal it gains access to Now TV and will sell access on its BT TV platform.

That AMC UK wasn't mentioned in the BT/VM announcement may mean it's not coming. Unless they wanted to keep the release news sports related and separate.

Media Boy Sources has reveal that "Virgin Media UK is to offer new and existing customers a package that will allow them to get all the kids channels for only £5 extra per month. Available from 1st August 2018 to Player and Mix TV customers".

I must say, that I drew the same conclusion, but I hope we are both wrong about that.

The number of viewers AMC is getting for this quite good channel is alarmingly low, and I thought that AMC would put pressure on BT to address this.

However, there are other considerations at work here, so let's see. To be honest, I am not as optimistic as I was, but still hoping for good news!

Nah, paying comfortable less than I have done in the past at the moment

Got a good deal from vm and the sky go extra is a relative’s login so that’s a freebie

It’s possible that will be disappearing next month though and I think the vm contact is also up so we are approaching renegotiation season again – always a fun time of year

Overnight in Media Boy HQ we have seen STV2 being removed from Virgin UK Channel 159 but Total Channels has gone up by one (TiVo boxes say 481) was 480 yesterday.:confused:

Media Boy Sources did reveal that BT Sport 4K was set to launch on Tuesday but we was NOT online on Tuesday.

Anyway no Channel number was given to us on Tuesday and also the launch date was August 1st.

Virgin Media UK start tests for three new SD Channels.

JJ20X over on DS Forum is reporting that Virgin Media UK has added the following working names to the network. They are called:

-Internal 8
-Internal Y
-Internal F

Information thanks to Digital Spy Forum and JJ20X.

They are testing on two SD Streams.

That is true, but what I think he was trying to say was that 4K TVs can now be bought at the price you used to have to pay for a bog standard TV. They no longer have to cost thousands.

Partly correct, we are getting at least a new music channel, a new entertainment channel and it looks like a new documentary channel plus possibly two more unknown channels.

Paramount HD is an interesting one. It's surprising that it didn't launch it in HD on Sky, given its one of Viacom's most prestigious brands. Could this signal the end of MTV Live HD on Virgin?

I was referring to Arthur's post claiming that no one can afford a 4k TV. Most new tv's are 4k now even the cheaper ones. So when buying a new telly you don't have to pay thousands for a 4k set.

We feel that Crime + Investigation HD will be given channel number 293.

As History HD can fit in beside History +1 at Channel 272.

JJ20X did reveal last night that "Test W6" has been allocated EPG slot 650, "Test Y1" has been allocated EPG slot 651 and "Test Y4" has been allocated EPG slot 652.

Maybe one of them will become known as History HD.

That's the second time on Virgin Media an SD channel (Bloomberg the other) has been removed and replaced with the HD version and it's looking like Paramount Network will only launch in HD.

Perhaps the start of a new trend for some broadcasters to gradually phase out SD channels for HD versions.

AIUI Premier Sports SD will close and become Premier Sports 1 HD and Premier Sports 2 and Freesports will only launch in HD.

It seems to be the case with the smaller less affluent channels that they are cutting costs by closing their SD service when they launch in HD.

They have done it for France24. They did one version quite a few months ago and one fairly recently. I can't remember if the English or French version changed first.

Not all.

BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBBC HD, Cbeebies HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD, Film4 HD, 4seven HD, Bloomberg HD and France 24 English HD and France 24 French HD are all available outside of the Full House pack.

Let's speculate. I think it is one or more of the following:

1. Amazon (under the name of 'Prime Video').

2. Sky UHD channels.

3. Other UHD channels.

4. Sky Atlantic.

It could be other things, such as more streaming services, AMC, etc, but my bet is on 1, 2 or 3 above, for now. I don't think we will get SA until 2019, but you never know!

Amazon Video is possible - It's now on BT so maybe they have agreed something with Virgin.

Any new UHD content on Virgin - Either Sky or Other (Insight) would be good.

There is currently not a full time BoxNation HD channel to replace it with.

Boxnation HD on Sky and BT is only PPV events/specials - maybe 1-2 programmes a week.

I'd say the chance of Amazon Prime appearing on VM is absolute zero.

Look at the various interviews that Mike Fries and other American cable co bosses have done over the last year or so, and they view Amazon as a major threat to their business'. In fact, far more so than Netflix.

My TiVo received Internal Q on channel 217 for a couple of hours on Tuesday morning. I can confirm that Quest HD will launch on channel 217.
