Now that it's been announced that the Premier League and EFL Leagues will start on September 12th, perhaps there will be an announcement that Sky UHD will finally launch?

Sky Sports UHD on VM was meant to be 2020 - HDR on Sky Sports UHD on Sky platform is 2021.

Just thinking that it will be the Charity Shield 2 weeks today. Hopefully, this could be the first game to be shown from Sky UHD as Virgin like to promote these sort of curtain raisers so here's hoping that an announcement will be imminent.

never really got the whole excitement about UHD. Sometimes i forget i'm watching an SD channel rather than the HD version. HD is a major step up from SD naturally but i just can't see the further improvement of UHD whenever i see it on. "its sharper", "it has more colours..." not really that exciting!

I have a modest 26" screen, and SD looks washed-out and fuzzy. HD is crisp. The only time I have seen UHD was on a neighbours' ginormous screen on which HD looked washed-out and fuzzy, but UHD was crisp. So the bigger the screen, the more UHD becomes relevant.

Red Button UHD was available on Sky when the VM/Sky deal was announced. The wording of the VM/Sky deal, to my recollection and interpretation, was that new UHD that Sky was still to launch themselves was part of the VM deal. Which suggested to me that linear UHD channels were on the way. I assumed this would be one 4K Cinema channel and one 4K Sports channel, and an outside chance of a 4K Entertainment channel. Though I really didn't expect the latter.

The wording of the announcement (as I remember it) implied was that it was something that wasn't currently available via their own satellite service at the time of the Press Release.

Ta.

"As part of the extended deal, Sky’s stellar line up of entertainment, cinema and sports channels will continue to be available on Virgin Media’s TV platform, with Virgin customers set to enjoy new Ultra HD linear and additional video-on-demand content from Sky next year."

I guess that could be be interpreted as Red Button UHD, but if I was writing a press release to convey that that's not the way I'd phrase it, even if I was told to not to give too much specific detail.

That ambiguity sounded like a proper channel back then, to me, and the extended delay made it seem to me like it was referencing a service that Sky hadn't launched yet, as if it was simply the existing UHD Red Button it would have launched at the start of the year.

Makes no difference to me ultimately as I don't have Sky premium channels or a UHD TV, I'm simply interested in tech.

To mean this sentence reads - they 'planned' to bring UHD to VM in 2020 - not they will bring UHD to VM in 2020

The publicity text itself is not so vague - but Sky are notorious for announcing and not delivering.

Indeed, the UHD advert last night was all in red. They've obviously switched it overnight to just say HD on the normal Sky Sports channel now, and there is nothing listed on 999 in the epg either. Maybe there was some midnight hour negotiations still going on with Sky and VM jumped the gun? But it WAS there.

I love sport, but for me it's the other way around. Films in particular can have so much going on on the screen, and often put so much effort into adding all the small flourishes, things you can miss with lower resolutions. Nature documentaries arguably benefit the most of the real life, non-SFX programming, they certainly get used to sell the picture detail in shops.

The sports that have benefitted from HD the most, in my experience, are tennis, golf and cycling, but HD is enough for the wide variety of sports I watch. I find frame rate more important, and that's only really an issue when it comes to streaming. I've had to stream my football club's matches and mirror them to my TV over the last month or two and the smoothness, or lack thereof, was noticeable even though the picture quality was fine.

I'm getting off topic though, and everyone's preferences and entertainment priorities are different.

But UHD is better overall with a bigger screen. It doesn't matter what you are watching.

The smaller the screen, the less noticeable the difference is.

That's totally incorrect. If all other variables are the same, 4k is 4k. It doesn't magically get better because the screen is bigger. Screen size has nothing to do with resolution alone, it's screen size and viewing distance that matters. 4k at 24" is just as good as it is at 80" if both are viewed at the correct distance.

No - the first premiership mTch of the season is on Saturday 12th September

Just got home and turned the V6 on and it was showing the UHD banner for Liverpool v Leeds in red and then it suddenly changed to the HD banner.

That's what I seen late last night, banner for that match in UHD on channel 999, which I posted earlier. When I turned the V6 back on this morning it was replaced with only the HD banner.

I seem to remember that during the announcement last year, they said there will be an impovment in the streaming quality from Sky.

Tonight I have had updates on my ipad for the Sky Sports app and also for the Virgin Go app so that could be a good sign.

Let's hope so. The first of the UHD premiership matches this season was scheduled for today, but still no sign of this on Virgin. How very frustrating.

If they allowed Sky Sports via TV 2 Go, would it still be limited to 1 stream per person?

Well, it was definitely advertised 48hrs ago on the home screen banner for a 5.30pm start TODAY on UHD channel 999. Something must have happened with their negotiated contract with Sky for them to withdraw it. I have a feeling it maybe related to a last minute rights issues on the Virgin Go app which may have stalled the launch? Bizarre situation.

The same reasons BT puts European football finals on it.

Surely BT have to make the euro finals available to all. That's totally different.
