But we will be keeping it close to our heart for now until Virgin Sources confirmed the names.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

I'm going by the CEO of Viacom saying that the channel will be available from "The first quarter of 2015". Interestingly, he also said that he "Considers the UK as the second home of Viacom".

The date could have slipped, but Spike TV is currently testing on satellite with a testcard. I hope that it won't stay on the transponder that it's testing on (or that VM won't get their feed via satellite) as there are already too many channels on it, with the resulting loss of picture quality.

New Channels update:

Media Boy HQ has today seen an update on the channels that Virgin Media are testing - but as yesterday we cant reveal what we have seen yet.

But "Watch this space".

We also have new idea what is testing but will keep it close to our heart for now.

Also the information we posted on Sunday is out of date.

We cant say anymore as we think it will be too easy to work out what may launch.

These shallow 'reality' shows falsely described as documentaries really are pandering to the lowest common denominator. Agreed, they have their place, but they seem to be taking over!

It will start to be advertised from today (at least on Channel 5 anyway). IIRC it will start at Easter sometime.

Their spin says that they will be showing exclusive shows from America and the UK. There will be box office dramas, big budget movies (channel 5 has a lot of these) and adrenaline fuelled sports (Bellator MMA as it's owned by Viacom and has previously been on Viva?? E3 as mentioned by theone2k10??)

If anyone's keen on knowing the latest news about Spike, Viacom has already set up a Facebook account, Twitter Feed and holding web page for Spike UK.
These pages don't have much useful information on them at the moment but I'm sure this will change nearer to the launch date.

It doesn't pay to bundle your services anymore, once it did, keep moving around you get better prices that way.

My latest year coming to an end, cancelled on Saturday the citing the cost when the offer ends, got a phone call Monday after haggling got another 10 months at same price + £50 credit on account + NO CONTRACT can leave anytime.

It gets better, I didn't have to leave and wait for an offer in the letterbox.

Great deal nicko, I think I'll be joining you in the summer as even with the price rise the full Sky package is £40 per month at half price. Just seen that Sky Sports is going up £1 on Sky in June, if VM follow suit it'll take it to £30.25 per month or £37.25 with HD so it's a no brainier to get the lot from Sky for £3 more than I'd be paying VM for just Sky Sports HD.

Wonder how long it'll be before VM join in the half price game as otherwise they are going to begin losing customers to Sky and/or streaming services. Seems their retentions deal these days max out at about £10 discount.

SKY are the kings of retention. Just need to hold your nerve and play the game. It does mean annually you might be left with no SKY TV for a few days but it's not long until they give you a call, sent you a letter or an e-mail giving you 50% off to come back. Play the game right and you could even get between 60% and 75% off! It's a bit hit and miss but what I learned is don't hit them with idle threats of going to another provider. For the past 3 years I've blown smoke up their behind by saying:

"Truth is I don't really want to cancel, I really enjoy your services. Problem is my deal is expiring and I can't afford to go up to full price."

SKY pretty much read between the lines and do the rest from there.

Good work :) Can you advise:
Is it a new on-demand service or a channel?
Would you personally rate its importance to VM as:
- game-changing (eg when Netflix and BT Sport came)
- good (eg History HD)
- insignificant (eg Tru TV)

Virgin issued this press release yesterday:
Quote:

Virgin Media puts Sky Sports on the go for Android users

Virgin Media customers with Sky Sports subscriptions can now use Android smartphones, tablets and laptops to access the Sky Sports app for the first time.

The app, which was previously only available for iOS devices, means sports fans can stream Sky Sports 1 to 5, Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports News HQ live on Android devices wherever they have a 3G, 4G or WiFi connection in the UK.

Android users can also access Sky Sports’ in-depth coverage of breaking news across eight key sports – football, cricket, rugby union, rugby league, golf, tennis, F1 and boxing – as well as exclusive video content from the Sky Sports News HQ studio, including interviews and analysis of all the top stories.

As the only place to get every Sky Sports and BT Sport channel in a single TV subscription, including in HD, Virgin Media enables customers to watch all every televised Premier League match and all their favourite sporting events wherever they want – whether it’s on their TV, tablet, smartphone or laptop.

Scott Kewley, Director of Digital Entertainment at Virgin Media said: “The Sky Sports app for Android cements our position as the home of sports TV at home or on the move and means we now have a full complement of Android and iOS apps for both Sky Sports and Sky Movies. Our customers enjoy the same access to Sky Sports on the go as Sky customers

All Virgin Media TiVo® customers can also access Virgin TV Anywhere for free from their iOS or Android device allowing them to watch 103 channels live over WiFi and manage their TiVo boxes remotely from anywhere in the world using a 3G or 4G connection.

Customers who subscribe to Sky Movies and Sky Sports can enjoy up to 120 live channels on the go using Virgin TV Anywhere and the Sky Movies and Sky Sports apps and websites.

I don't understand that. 3g streaming through the sky sports app on android devices using a Virgin customer log in has been available for months.

I'm going to guess that its Nick Jr +1, the channel we are all missing the most :PP:

Yes, I'm guessing that it was soft-launched in January and hard-launched yesterday (if that's the right term :)) So this is obviously not theone2k10's DNP.

Spike is due to launch soon so it could be that. However, if it's not Spike, it's likely to be Disney Channel HD as all the other channels are part of Viacom or Fox who would be unlikely to launch just one channel at a time unless it's a new channel. Watch me get proved wrong, though! :)

Base on the info we got today one channel has been given it channel name ahead of launch.

Some other channels has still got V0--.

Virgin Sources has told Media Boy HQ not to reveal what is coming until all testing channels has been given their "real" channel names.

Note: More than one channel is set to launch.

I've got a feeling it could be the missing UPC channels, with LG/VM trying to align the channels for their customers.

Media Boy HQ has today seen an update on the channels that Virgin Media are testing - but as Monday we cant reveal what we have seen yet.

But one of the tests has been given an real name of one of the channels we was hoping for on Sunday.

Due to this we now think we know what is testing but will keep it close to our heart for now.

Also the information we posted on Sunday is out of date.

Media Boy HQ has seen FOUR updated since Monday.

I was told a while back (not long after Viacom bought Channel 5) that Viacom had approached VM and were keen to get 5* +1 back onto VM. This has taken much longer than I thought, so if I was a betting man i'd say that the negotiations were protracted by the inclusion of carriage negotiations for other Viacom owned channels.

At a guess i'd say that the channels will be 5* +1 (approached VM already about this), Spike TV (due to start around Easter time) and two other timeshift Viacom channels (going on the basis that Viacom appear to value +1 channels as one of the first things they did after buying Channel 5 was to get 5* +1 back on air).

However, we may see new parent music channels as they have had a large loss of viewers. Viacom will be keen to boost viewership with cable customers and VM will get them for a song as per my post earlier this year about music channels needing VM more than VM needs them.

The channels I would like to come to VM

Universal HD - really annoying watching top series in poor SD PQ
Boxnation HD - watching live fights in SD and to rub it in I can watch the highlights in HD on BT Sports
SKY BOX Office HD - paying for sports PPV events that are only available in SD to VM customers

For different reasons I dont think we will get these channels sadly :(

Apparently, Viacom did consider reversing Desmonds decision to scrap 5* +1 in favour of 5 +24, but because 5 +24 achieved higher viewing figures than the former 5* +1 it was decided to keep 5 +24 on the air in addition to bringing back 5* +1.

Agreed. And BoxNation HD is only for live fights, it's not a full-time channel. I'm not convinced that BoxNation's current business model is working for them. The stock market flotation was cancelled and Rainham Steel owner and boxing fan Bill Ives took a 36% stake in them last year. This reduced Frank Warren's stake and injected funding of £3.6m helping fund the HD channel and cover losses. The company remains unprofitable in the UK squeezed by Sky's PPV and Channel 5. It's not a big business so not a massive money drain so could be funded by wealthy benefactors who don't mind spending a couple of £m a year on it. Its international licensing of the format seems not to have happened so I'm not sure where they can go next in terms of making it profitable.

I heard a guy saying he chucked his 39inch HD tv in the bin because he just got a new bigger one...He could have given this to someone who would use it to improve their tv viewing experience ;)

This is what I kind of based my tongue-in-cheek comment about

If people are willing to shell out £1000s a year to Sky/VM, then as the technology with these companies improve, I'm sure the household technology moves too...a bit off topic, sorry lol
