What have you got loading up at start up? What are your system specs? Are you getting mail through the mail app or a previously installed Windows essentials pack?

Did you check the activation status prior to reverting back? Having your key active for W10 whether or not you're running it is a good idea just incase you want to upgrade later on after the years free upgrade. Having said that what happened with your upgrade?

Sorry to hear that..but you are aware that support is finishing for Windows 7.

Mainstream ended in January. You have another 5 years until the end of extended support.

I still have the little 'windows' icon in my systems tray(?) so would still be able to upgrade at a later date. I had several annoying things happening, Windows Live Mail kept asking me to log in with one of my other email accounts, even though I could see the emails in the background being downloaded. Couldn't find the snipping tool, and also the search kept taking me on the web instead of searching the lappy, so I began to get teasy (as they say down here).

Thanks for that Maggy but at my age 5 years is a lifetime, also it's debatable if this laptop will last that long.

You could have removed live mail and used the W10 mail app.

Snipping tool is available I'm not sure why you could not find it. Typing snipping tool into the search box.

There is the option to only search 'My stuff' or 'Web' just above the search box once you have typed something in.

Do you mind sharing your system specs? On first boot of W10 it's expected to be a little slow while everything is loaded up for the first time etc. You can then configure to your needs. How is your machine running W7?

Windows 10 Build 10135 Includes Updated Snipping Tool With New Features
Where to find the Snipping Tool in Windows 10
Quote:

Update: As pointed out by our readers, Microsoft have moved the Snipping Tool in its final release version of Windows 10. It now lives in a location where we are probably more used to accessing it from. So, to start the Snipping Tool, click on the Start icon and then the All Apps option. This brings up an alphabetical list of programs and folders. Scroll down to the ‘W’ section and click on the Windows Accessories folder. The Snipping Tool should be listed in this folder.
If you’re going to use the Snipping Tool frequently, then you may want to take advantage of one of two options in the right-click context menu on the Snipping Tool, namely ‘Pin to Start’ and ‘Pin to Taskbar’.
...
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we couldn’t find any differences in functionality between a Win 7 snipping tool app and the Win 10 version!
If only there was a way of searching for solutions to problems.

This wasn't the first boot of Windows 10. I had also tried to restart but ended up booting because it was taking such a time. I did search for 'snipping tool' and 'windows accessories', but it failed to find both. The search for snipping tool took me to the web. I prefer the old search bar.

I had another go or two or three.

I detached all USB devices apart from my wireless keyboard and mouse, uninstalled all anti-virus software, up dated as many drivers as far aspossible, performed a clean boot and after everything had downloaded, following advice, I disconnected the network cable.

As usual the installation fell over after the first reboot at 30% giving no reason.

Things I haven't done include disconnecting my addition internal hard drives and using an iso disc.

Incidentally I did a pre-installation check for Windows 8.1 which is supposed to cover many of the possible Windows 10 issues. It found no compatibility issues that might affect installation.

My final, and this time I mean final, attempt will be with an iso disc. No way am I disconnecting my internal hard drives. If MS cannot come up with an upgrade process better than this they should be ashamed. I know it is a free upgrade, but they have a duty of care to all those non-savvy computer users out there.

BTW windows 10 installed with no problems onto my son's i7 laptop, from 8.1.

Not sure how relevant it is but try updating the bios for the motherboard.

Loads of reports that unplugging Sata drives/dvd optical drives fixes the freezing for some people so try that.

Windows 10: broken update forces some users into endless reboot loop
Quote:

“It downloads, reboot to install. Gets to 30% and reboots. Gets to 59% and reboots. Gets to 59% again and then states something went wrong so uninstalling the update. Wait a few minutes and reboot. Back to login screen,” said Microsoft forum user BrettDM. “This happens without fail, every single time.”
Are you using a Nvidia graphics card? Apparently their update process uses a dummy user account. An entry in the registry about user profiles may mess with win 10 installation. The registry entries contain a directory that doesn't exist, ie C:\Users\UpdatusUser.

I'm preparing to upgrade to win 10 and my win 8.1 registry has 2 user profiles entries like that.

Reading the above helpful comments it appears to me that MS has messed up here. We had few of these problems with previous upgrades.

SnoopZ. Yes my bios is up-to-date. It is absolutely shocking that MS have taken us to a point where I need to disconnect all my internal peripherals including, NomadKing, my Nvidia graphics card. I am resentful of having to do so. What happens to the millions of folk out there who are not computer savvy?

Yes, you are right. MS could have had a much better post failure diagnostic tool; and one you can use before installation to give you a chance of dealing with the culprit beforehand.

I suppose I will have to bite the bullet, remove or disconnect everything and use an iso disc.

The Nvidia issue is registry related. It involves editing the registry. Another option to try would be to copy \Users\Default to \Users\UpdatusUser. That would create the missing profile directory.

Remember that W7 onwards can mount an ISO as a virtual CD\DVD drive, avoids actually having to burn the physical media.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I finally disconnected everything today, including additional internal HDs, my video card, USB devices and CD player. I used a USB stick with the media burned on.

No joy I'm afraid running it as a boot device or from within Windows. As a boot device the system would not accept my product key and made me continue in Windows. The installation fell over ay 30% as usual.

What I don't get is why the USB / ISO methods reject my Windows 7 product key. This may make no difference to my constant failure to upgrade to Windows 10, but is an irritation. I checked the product number by retyping it into Windows Activation, so I know it is right.

Incidentally, if you lose your Windows Product Key you can easily retrieve it using this clever app.

Hi Graham, very kind of you to respond, however I decided after having a good look around on Windows 10 that, for the moment, it was not for me. So I restored it back to Windows 7, now I am having all sorts of problems with my email in particular. I cannot delete any emails in any of the folders, and each time I open WLM I get a message 'Recovering Windows Live Mail Database'.

.
Incidentally I tried the sfc /scannow as suggested and nothing happened, hope that is not something else that's gone wrong. :(

I'm presuming the command prompt is the Run option.

After 53 million installs, Windows 10 takes 4.95% of the market

It has been a little bit less than three weeks since Microsoft released Windows 10 for consumers around the world. The OS, which is receiving positive reviews from across the web, is being adopted quickly despite there being a few teething issues upfront.

According to our sources, Windows 10 has surpassed 53 million installs, which StatCounter says now accounts for 4.95% of the market as of last week. At it's peak, Windows 10 was being installed on about 1500 machines per second.

To get rid, select File/Options/Mail/Stop signing in, hope this helps :)

Updated last week to Windows 10 Home, thought everything was ok until I noticed my download speed. It should be 160mb but I'm only getting 20.After upgrade from 8.1 to 10,alls ok until I reboot after the install, that's when the speed drops.

Just got off the phone with CS,and they're blaming Windows 10,which I do as well.Anyone else have this problem,it can't just be me can it?If it can't be sorted soon,I will have to drop back to 8.1.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

No trouble here with download speeds. If anything, mine have improved since installing Windows 10. Upload certainly has improved dramatically. On W8 it took me 30 minutes to upload a 100MB file, on W10 it took just 10 minutes. Since doing that system file check scan it has been working excellently.

It could be useful to drop back and see if that makes a difference. Do you have anything else you can check the speed with? Are you using the superhub in router or modem mode? If in router mode it would be useful to change to modem mode and see if you have the same problems.

Thanks,

I have tried that fix although after using the fixit button to uninstall Silverlight when I attempt to reinstall it I get a warning that I am using a browser that may not be compatible with Silverlight even though I am using the Edge browser. Installed it anyway and will see if the error warnings disappear.

That happened to me a couple of weeks ago before I upgraded to Win 10. In my case it is related to using a VPN. No VPN - Ok, with VPN not Ok, ulpoad can be higher than download.

Funny how after MS introduce a new flavour of OS how every CS you contact about your issues blames the latest upgrade/OS...even though they have probably been given every chance to get to know about the new introduction of a new OS.

Thanks for the reply.Dropping back to 8.1 will solve the problem.Running the SH in router mode, can't try modem mode as I haven't got a my own router.Going to try a clean install, don't think it will make a difference, but worth a try.

You can still try modem mode. All you do is connect the PC to one of the ports. The only active port will be one of them ones at either end of the row of, most likely the one nearest to where the coax is attached.

After removing Netgear WNDA3200 smart wizard and its associates which would be drivers for the said Netgear usb adapter TCP/IP stack coudn't bind any other adapters/cards/ethernet port. I had to restore to a previous working known date to restore functionality. I then removed the WNDA3200 drivers from device manager without problem but the program still remains and cannot be removed because the programs uninstaller has lost its path, moron!
I did ask if there were updates!!!! :mad:http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...l#post35793608

Edge browser has stopped remembering passwords.

Not for every site, CF is fine for instance but several work related sites. It asks if I want to remember the password, depending upon which site it is I click yes but when I try to login on to the same site later I have to re enter username/password.:(

Finally, I have installed W10 after weeks of frustration. To do this I removed or disconnected all additional drives, system cards, all unnecessary drivers and uninstalled F-Secure, Spyhunter, Acronis, tuneuputilities and disk keeper.

Everything has been replaced and restored with updates.

I'm pretty pleased. The system is running much more crisply than with Windows 7.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

I'm impressed with W10 performance, enough for me to consider upgrading our oldest dual core PC (2005) Pre-anylisis suggests that this PC's processor is unsuitable, but W10 is running so crisply on my quad core I am thinking that the lack of processor power may not be an obstacle.

W10 appears to use less resources or uses them better. Since upgrade, boot is complete within 30 seconds, (before it was almost 1 minute), apps start up more quickly, multitasking causes no noticeable slowdown, shutdown is very rapid, < 10 secs.

!'m expecting upgrade problems, as previously, but I am hoping to avoid this by stripping out all additional hardware, uninstalling nonessential drivers and uninstalling PC utilities like virus ware and tune ups.

Wish me good luck.

Is windows 10 really that much of an improvement to people like myself who only use their laptop to surf the web etc very basic tasks. My 7 laptop has not given me any problems so i'm reluctant to upgrade if all it means faster boot time faster shut down.i have time to wait.

thenry 28-08-2015 18:13

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

yes. W10 is faster overall too, daily tasks and all not just boot and shutdowns. give it a try. if you don't like it then simply revert back to where you were with W7 which is a simple process. use the download tool to upgrade.

Just tried that, wish I hadn't, it was still 'clearing data' 30 minutes after I clicked on Clear Data. Had to con+alt+del to get to Task Manager so that I could close the bowser.:(

Edit: problem still the same, remembers some login details but not others. Seems to be sites that have a 'remember me' tick box still work but others don't.
