Here's a couple of titbits of news/rumours from Liberty's latest Q2 earnings which was released earlier:

A lot of talk on here a while back about whether Amazon Prime (formerly Lovefilm) would come to VM or not. Well, still no clearer on that today, but something I didn't know is that Liberty have their own Netflix type service called MyPrime which is being rolled out across their cablecos.

MyPrime costs about the same per month as Netflix, or, if you take a higher priced bundle it comes free as part of that bundle. Perhaps this may come to VM soon.

Secondly, Liberty's cloud based service is launching in Poland. We have Tivo in the UK, but in Liberty's other cablecos they use their own software and stbs called Horizon. Liberty have teamed up with Comcast and Time Warner Cable to centralise software standards and they call this RDK (Reference Design Kit). The Horizon cloud based service launching in Poland is based on RDK software and standards.

According to a poster on Dspy WWE will be $9.99 globaly, they had a press conference and said the $9.99p/m subject to a 6 month commitment or $19.99p/m with no commitment price would apply to WWE Network globaly not just the USA.
This works out about £5.60p/m or £12.70p/m

Here is some interesting info about the launch of WWE Network in the UK by Grahame Herbert who is the WWE editor of the What Culture website.

How Will It Impact WWE’s Deal With Sky?

Let’s start with the very biggest question, just how will the WWE Network impact upon Sky? On the one hand, if it’s an over the top digital service then it will surely cannibalise Sky’s PPV sales. That’s exactly why you shouldn’t expect the UK WWE Network to be anything like the US’s digital version. Instead, expect the UK Network to be part of the Sky TV package.

It simply has to be that way. There’s no way WWE would risk damaging their long standing relationship with Sky by undermining them with a digital Network. Even if they wanted to, they probably can’t – the 2015 WWE / Sky contract means that all pay per views will be exclusive to Sky.

With this in mind, the UK WWE Network seems certain to be a Sky tie-in. That probably means a dedicated WWE Network channel, similar in style to Sky Sports F1. There’ll then be all the on-demand content on your Sky TV guide. You’ll also be able to access this via Sky Go presumably.

So in that respect, WWE Network won’t impact negatively on Sky in anyway. It is going to have to be a mutual tie-in, meaning that it can only benefit Sky. Does that hurt non-Sky customer WWE fans who want to watch the Network? Yes, but then if you’re watching wrestling, you presumably have Sky to begin with.

But What About Vince McMahon’s Comments In The Conference Call?

“It’s unclear whether we’re going to see a pay-tv model in any other country in the world” commented Vince McMahon in the 31st July Conference call.
That seems to suggest he doesn’t currently envision a UK pay tv deal, which indicates it would be digital when the Network launches this October.

However, the comment doesn’t actually mean anything. It’s just Vince’s way of saying something without actually saying anything. The key word is “unclear”, meaning he doesn’t know – which in itself can’t be true. Whatever the UK situation is, with an October launch just two months away, Vince definitely knows. It’s hard to see how he could possibly launch digitally here without hurting Sky’s pay tv events.

Will All The US Content Be Available?

The US WWE Network launched with a tremendous amount of content available. There’s more hours than anyone could ever realistically watch, nearly every pay per view is instantly available for download.

Would a Sky service match this? Not to the same extent, I feel. Sky has the platform to feature masses of on-demand content, as anyone with Sky Movies will confirm. The thing is, the WWE back catalogue is so vast, it would dominate Sky’s on-demand services. It seems more feasible on the Sky end that they’d take less content. That could suit WWE too, who arguably made a mistake by making so much content available on the US version. Staggered releases of old content is far more exciting for the long term engagement of fans.

That being said, the heart of the US Network will be present on the UK version. Every WrestleMania being available is going to be a must. It’s stuff like the Z-rate pay per views that could be deemed surplus to requirements.
Even if the Network is launched digitally here, don’t expect the exact same depth of content as the US version. A more focused and refined version is better for everyone involved.

What Does Canada’s WWE Network Tell Us About The UK Network?

The Canadian WWE Network roll-out is a sterling indication that the UK release will be tied in with Sky.

In Canada, the Network will be tied in with the Rogers Network. Broadcasting on Rogers Channel 512, the linear channel will have “pay-per-view events, groundbreaking original series, live in-ring action, reality shows and a video-on-demand library.”

That will be pretty much what WWE works out with Sky for the UK, we can presume. There’ll be the on demand content too of course, but in the UK and Canada it is far less an ‘over the top’ experience. In some ways it’s actually better that WWE are working it in with established broadcasters, it makes marketing easier and also opens up advertising opportunities.

There’s a further clue from Canada that WWE Network will be on Sky. “The structure of this new agreement demonstrates WWE’s commitment to growing our brand internationally through integrated partnerships,” stated Gerrit Meier, WWE Executive Vice President, International.

That quote is basically saying that the international roll-outs will be done with partners, rather than being a sole WWE ‘over the top’ roll out like the US.

What If It Isn’t On Sky?

Legally it seems implausible given WWE’s Sky pay per view contract, but if the WWE Network wasn’t to feature on the sky platform, then a digital ‘over the top’ model would certainly allow for more new fans.

Right now, you can only watch WWE in Britain if you pay a premium. Sky Sports is an expensive product to have on top of your regular television viewing. Many would-be fans simply can’t access WWE because they don’t have the means to afford Sky. If the WWE were savvy, they’d be opening up potentially a whole new audience by making WWE content available at a more accessible digital distribution and price point. The issue is of course, Sky would immediately feel undermined – hence our belief that it will be some sort of mutual tie-in.

You might say that the user experience would be more natural if the UK Network was separate from Sky. It would be a truer form of the WWE Network, more in tune with the US version.

Could The Network Launch Without PPV’s?

One way the WWE Network could launch without Sky is if it was just an on-demand service. That would mean you get the Network channel and all the historical content in the ‘over the top’ digital way. For pay per view however, you’d still have to go to Sky Box Office.

It takes away the key PPV selling point, but at least gives WWE the power to be more in control of their own destiny. They can then push the Network as a means to watch WWE’s greatest moments, with the platform available to download on your console or smartphone. You wouldn’t need Sky and could watch in more places and at a cheaper price. The question is, would the Network be half as desirable without the monthly pay per views? Probably not. Which leads us to think WWE will probably do the Sky tie-in, which would then allow pay per view to be a factor.

How Much Will UK Fans Have To Pay For The WWE Network?

The Network is a very reasonable $9.99 in the United States. As a price point in the UK, we would expect that to be dearer. If the Network is going to be Sky based, then a price of £14.99 seems about right. That’s the cost of current Sky WWE pay per views, so it makes sense that Sky and WWE would keep that price point. You’d also be getting the on demand content and presumably a channel, so it does still represent good value for money.

However… just to get Raw and Smackdown, via Sky Sports, is already a subscription cost for WWE fans. Some Sky bills are already near or above the £80 mark. Are fans really going to want to shell out more for another ‘channel’? That’s the problem WWE will face by partnering with Sky. They could of course just make the Network available as part of the Sky Sports package, but then how would Sky or WWE make money from that? It’s way more likely that they charge in the region of £10 to £15 as an additional subscription.

Conversely, if the package is separate from Sky, a £9.99 price point seems certain – particularly if the PPV’s won’t be included.

Was This Actually All Worked Out Months Ago?

When WWE signed a new pay per view deal with Sky this past January, we did wonder if it was in fact a WWE Network deal. The new terms meant that Sky would be broadcasting all 12 WWE pay per views on sky box office in 2015. That sounded like an awfully bad deal for Sky if WWE were then going to launch the Network. Both parties already knew at that point there’d be a UK Network release by 2015. So why would they make a deal for pay per views?

You also have the fact that WWE has stated they don’t expect any pay per view revenues for next year. Doesn’t that contradict the fact that they have the Sky box office deal? Does that mean they expect to make not one single sale on the box office? Or more realistically, was that Sky pay per view deal actually just the Network deal? We believe so.

Should I Just Keep The US Version?

Let’s be honest, many of us in the UK have already subscribed to the WWE Network. It wasn’t hard to simply use a service like unblock.us to gain access to the service. So what do we do now that there’ll be a UK version?

The answer will probably be to keep the US version. It’s hard to envision that the UK will launch with the exact same breadth of content as the US version. It will also be more expensive. The US Network currently costs around £6, it’s hard to imagine that the UK version will be that cheap. Sky are going to want to charge in line with £15 to match what they would have charged on traditional pay per view. Even if it is solely digital, WWE are going to go with a price point of £9.99 we believe.

You simply can’t beat the ease and price of buying the US Network. Nevertheless, given WWE’s popularity here in Britain, we expect the WWE UK Network will defintely be a success. Whatever form it ends up presented in, the interest is definitely there from the passionate UK fans.


So after all of that my assumption is that the WWE Network will launch in the UK in conjunction with SKY. It'll be a combination of a dedicated channel and a large library of on demand content. It'll cost £14.99 per month, which will include the monthly PPV on SKY Box Office. I think it's one of the reasons why SKY Box Office, previously only available on SKY and Virgin Media, has launched on Talk Talk. This would make the WWE Network available to 15.5 million pay TV households in the UK. It will be another valuable weapon for SKY in their battle with BT.

Something tells me it'll be the Canadian version. On demand stuff available via sky. Pay per views only via sky box office. I thought wwe might have opened up the network to all to make money asap but it appears they've bottled it and have signed up direct to their Canadian and British networks to provide a diluted version of the network to keep peace and get new contracts signed long term so they didn't lose them.

The Myprime service seems to charge both a monthly and a fee per item. With newer items costing on top of the fee. They will also face a huge battle in the UK to get content. I guess they would have to replace Virgin Movies which i think is a better name.

I'm trying to find more info but i'm quite confident it will have all the ppvs, i think the ppvs moving to box office are for the casual watcher who like the odd ppv say for instance wrestlemania, this way they can get to see the ppv without needing to make the 6 month commitment to WWE Network.
Also Sky are awfully quiet on this, they were like this when they lost some WWE to Channel 4 too.

If they're going to just copy Amazon, I don't think it will work especially if newer films are charged per item.

What John Malone said in a recent interview, is that he thinks the best way to go about it is to charge for "tiers" of bundled services, basically the same as is now with subscriptions. So, if you take a higher speed broadband bundle you get a higher spec netflix type service. Note, he made no mention of myprime.

So, if you take their top speed bundle you would get myprime "full" with all the latest films, tv shows etc. If you took a lower tier speed, you would get a lower spec myprime with older films and shows etc, but with the option of paying for newer stuff on a pay-per-view basis.

Liberty have said that they don't see Netflix, Amazon as competitors, but yet they have launched myprime... They also said they want to keep the video broadband traffic from over-the-top apps (like netflix) within their own network, rather than paying fees to others. Which they can't do with netflix, but can do with myprime. What is not clear is how myprime, if we ever get it, will sit alongside VM's current video on demand (VOD) offerings.

I think the Canadian broadcasting situation is a bit different from the UK. If not approved as a foreign service then a local provider needs to produce a local version of the channel under licence. Hence channels like beIN Sport, HBO, FX and Nickleodeon have tied up with local Canadian companies whilst others like ESPN and Showtime have not and cannot be viewed in Canada.
So, presumably WWE had to tie up with Rogers or similar in Canada but does not have to tie up with anyone to broadcast in the UK.

Interesting point but having the most channels is not the objective. Sky's is open mainly because this was a condition of allowing the Sky-BSB merger. Most pay-tv platforms tend to be closed otherwise.
I guess the issue is having more marginal channels like truTV won't drive subscriptions and VM will have fewer costs and get more income if it is the only company dealing with new channels. Technically, I'm not sure how other companies could integrate their services into the network; it's certainly not as simple as paying for third party satellite broadcasting capacity, encryption and an EPG slot.

Cable can't be open in the way that satellite can. Anyone can buy satellite bandwidth and send you their channels. But for cable, equipment is needed at the headend to put the channels onto the cable.

I don't see that this makes it an open system, it just means that the cable company has chosen to/been paid to/been compelled to by legislation to make some channels unencrypted. And sometimes in Europe the costs of cable TV are paid for by leaseholders out of the service charge so are paid indirectly.

Well the fact was I could just buy the equipment and watch TV, by Digital Cable and watch tv (all FTA and good variety).
it is possible, like freeview freesat.

I do understand in the low countries and possibly France, cable is the norm in some areas without an alternative, so basic channels are given free with corresponding equipment. As long as the STB or TVs follow a standard to receive the EPG and channels, it should be possible.

As I understand it now the PSBs are unencrypted on VM (is this still the case). therefore just equipment would be need.

I think we're probably just talking about a difference in definitions. When Vince talked about an open platform, he/she was talking about open in the context of FTA channels being able to launch on it without negotiating directly with VM. Your definition of open refers to the channels being FTA, unencrypted and being able to be received by what sound like standard DVB-C TV receivers. (as oppose to DVB-T for terrestial and DVB-S for satellite).

I think there's been some discussions around this area in the past, I believe in some areas it can be done with a standard DVB-C TV receiver but that it is against the VM T&Cs (though if you don't have a contract with them then it is probably a moot point!).

According to Boxnation Virgin Media don't want it as it's only a part time channel at the moment.

Boxnation and Talk Talk have agreed a deal that will see the channel launch prior to next months Mayweather Vs. Maidana clash. Will be interesting to see if it launches in HD on Talk Talk.

HD streaming is being given to Premier Sports subscribers on the Sky platform. No news yet about this coming to VM customers but VM customers do pay £2pm less than Sky customers.

Very much doubt it, all the pay-TV channels on TalkTalk including Sky Sports are in SD only.

Also interesting that the channel is not on BT given the fact that the head of BT Sport, Simon Green, is a director of BoxNation and used to be its chief executive.

What do you mean by size? I guess in terms of news you mean population size as precious little news occurs in uninhabited regions.
So, the UK population is 64m and the US 318.5m. The largest state in the USA is California with 38m people. The USA has a further 49 states. So, the UK is actually larger than every individual US state.

The origins of cable tv were all about providing local services, but in most cases this never really materialised.

In my area 20+ years ago when cable tv started, we had a local teletext service which was run by the local college in partnership with the cableco. The plan was to turn this into a local tv channel and get funding through ads from all the local shops and other business'. But the cableco merged and merged again, until it was no longer interested in serving local services and it never happened. The college even had the tv studio and equipment all set up and ready to go. And their students studying journalism were to be the reporters and presenters and editors and producers etc

Why don't all these local channels contact the business' in their respective areas and get local ads to fund them?

I think where it falls down is in the fact that "community" is no longer really based on geographical location - especially in our towns and cities, most of which are wonderfully diverse.

More appealing, commercially, would be channels which cater specifically for the needs of individual communities, but they would perhaps merely serve to entrench community divisions rather than encourage integration. And besides, they already exist. Local tv wasn't, rather isn't, supposed to be commercially attractive - it's partly funded for that very reason - it's supposed to provide what the BBC is seriously failing to provide, which is proper local public service broadcasting. Unfortunately it's come about just as televisual viewing habits are slowly starting to change.

Cable operators also had a statutory requirement to provide a local television channel, but this was dropped at some point in the nineties around the time of the big mergers.

Bell Cablemedia in East London had a scrolling information service filled with out-of-date information then for one week a year they would put out some programmes just to fulfil the legal requirements.

I remember on CableTel and NTL Analogue, they used to cut away from the normal adverts on channels like Nickelodeon and showed really low budget local adverts. I don't know how they were allowed to do it really as I would have thought the normal advertisers on these channels would get annoyed unless they only paid for their adverts to be shown on Sky.

Not sure if you mean Cable TV only started back then or just in your area. But I can safely say Cable TV was available many many years ago. My parents had cable tv back in West London in the 70's. I believe someone has mentioned Rediffusion TV were the company that provided ours, although it was only the 3 channels at the time, BBC1, 2 and ITV(porb known as ATV back then)

Delay in getting Tru TV, because of negotiations getting extra CNN channels.
.............. Like CNN America and CNN HD

Would be nice to think it will happen, but no idea if true anybody here heard anything?

Was this in vision or audiably? I have heard of cable companies in the past making eg flood warning announcements on top of the TV audio.

Would they do this today? Do they still have the technical capability to do so after years of consolidation?

Yes, I often wondered that too. Did they only do this on channels that they owned? Didn't Telewest end up with the formerly United Artists owned channels? Obviously these channels ended up being owned by VM who sold them off to Sky.

ISTR that previous freeview periods on VM have either not happened or have started and/or ended early. The reasons given at the time were that amending the encryption was much more problematic for cable than satellite.

I was so looking forward to seeing TruTV on Virgin Media. I had a look at Redneck Island on a relative's TV (who has Freeview) and it does look rather interesting: let me tell you.

Been speaking to a couple of sources, all have said CNNHD or other CNN channels have absolutely nothing at all to do with TRUtv not launching on Virgin.
The word "money" is a better thought.

Won't be launching for a while yet along with Sky News HD the contract is signed so why they are taking so long to launch remains a mystery

I expect Sky offered VM one rate to launch immediately and a lower rate to launch at a specific date in the future. After a little negotiation VM went for the later date.

Morning friends. A dreadful day, a dreadful week ahead in work. At least the football begins this saturday. As a newcastle fan i embark on another season with deluded fantasies of midtable bliss but yet ahead i face embarrassment, humiliation, pardew tactics and then cashley selling all our best players in january.

I doubt we'll get any joy this week?? No TruTv coming anytime soon, sky HD channels next year...come on MB pull a rabbit out of the hat please

Virgin update things overnight after midnight.

Premier Sports was set to be remove from my package in March at 6am on March 1st. But was remove by 3am.

Base on info I have got Sky Sports News HQ HD will NOT launch on Virgin until early 2015.

New Channels:

-Sky Sports 5 will launch on Virgin Channel 506.
-Sky Sports 5 HD will launch on Virgin Channel 516.

Channel rebrand:

-Sky Sports News will be rebrand as Sky Sports News HQ on Virgin Channel 501.

haha it did make me chuckle. probably the greatest day on here. The anger i was displaying in the weeks leading up to it getting annoyed at VM "winking at me" on twitter about getting the channels. the early morning confusion around channel numbers increasing before the explosion of joy at the official announcement. Happy happy days.

lol BomberAF, I do remember him. Was he having a wild stab in the dark or did he have genuine inside info? He was right on BT Sport but he also predicted Sky Atlantic too as well.
