-Channel AKA
-Now Music

Surely if an agreement for these is reached it would make sense to also include Clubland TV and Planet Pop.

And what about Capital/Heart TV too? Virgin could do with a few more music channels.

Thing is though Virgin have the music on demand service too, i do agree VM could do with more linar music channels.

When VM removed some of the music channels some time ago, they pointed viewers to their music on demand service and more or less said that music channels were no longer needed.

Perhaps that's why there are some music channels missing? Of course, LG may now have a different strategy and they may well appear.

The fact that music channels have been losing viewers may mean that the channels want to be on as many platforms as possible to try and maintain their diminishing customer base.

On the other hand LG may well take the view that, as they are now less popular and music on demand exists, it can save some money by not having them.

The number of ad breaks and the length of them puts me off the linear music channels. I always watch my music videos via Music On Demand, I think it's the best way and puts you in control.

One thing I would love to see in Music On Demand is create your own playlist or add to queue. Probably wouldn't take much to create a TiVo app?

Despite the better picture quality it seems a little redundant with YouTube, which does both playlists and a TV queue.

The reason for my comment was Clubland and and Planet Pop are also owned by AATW. Surely a new deal will have to be inked, to get channel AKA and Now Music onto the main VM network, it would make sense to add the 2 other channels also. We know VM they have the room.

Which was my point about MTV Classic. Similarly, it could have been assumed that the new contract for MTV channels would have included MTV Classic... but it wasn't added.

True but that was under previous ownership, i can't see LG letting extra channels that are available at what i assume would be a reasonable cost slip through the net.

I don't think that's the issue. From what I've read on other forums, these sort of channels pay VM, not the other way around. They pay because they think that by increasing their potential audience, they'll be able to charge advertisers more / attract more advertisers. They have to decide if the extra potential viewers is worth what they have to pay.

VM meanwhile, waits patiently, willing to take anyone's money. :)

Some news on Lovefilm

Amazon takes on Netflix with rebrand of LoveFilm video-on-demand service
Online retailer will fold film and TV rental arm into its Prime subscription service for combined price of £79 a year

Mark Sweney
The Guardian, Friday 21 February 2014

Amazon is hitting back at Netflix in the UK by rebranding its LoveFilm video-on-demand service.

LoveFilm, bought out by Amazon three years ago in a deal worth nearly £200m, will be folded into the online retailer's British website next week, creating a one-stop service for digital streaming, DVD rental and books.

"Consumers will be able to shop for what they want, read what they want and watch they want anywhere at any time," said Tim Leslie, vice-president of Amazon Instant Video for the UK and Germany.

LoveFilm, which offers streaming of television series such as The Walking Dead and hit films such as The Place Beyond the Pines and Wall-E, will be merged with the Amazon Prime subscription service, which gives members perks including unlimited free delivery and borrowing up to 500,000 Kindle ebooks.

Existing subscribers will get access to the new LoveFilm service, to be called Prime Instant Video, which will have the effect of enabling Amazon to leapfrog Netflix as the UK's biggest digital TV and film streaming business.

Amazon aims to offer a broader service than Netflix, which supplies mostly older programming, by including the option of digitally renting or purchasing 50,000 new releases such as Captain Phillips and Game of Thrones.

"Even if you have another service you are going to want our service," said Leslie. "It is the only place you are going to be able to find certain great TV shows, movies and original content all in one place. It is the most complete digital video service in the UK."

Amazon is hoping to challenge Netflix by bundling Amazon Prime with LoveFilm at a knockdown price. Netflix charges its estimated 2 million UK customers £5.99 a month, about £72 a year, the same price as the existing LoveFilm service.

Amazon Prime costs £49 annually. The new combined package will be charged at £79, about £6.58 a month, making it 35% cheaper than subscribing to each service separately.

"All of these things in one package for less than £7 a month, we think this is best value out there," said Leslie.

Users who only want access to Prime Instant Video can continue to pay £5.99. The LoveFilm brand will continue to be used for the DVD by post rental business Amazon is continuing to run.

Amazon bought into the decade-old LoveFilm in 2008, taking full control in 2011, to drive its move into TV and film rentals and digital streaming in the UK.

"Our customers already know they are part of Amazon, it is the best thing to happen to LoveFilm since the launch in the first quarter of 2004," said Simon Morris, LoveFilm's chief marketing officer.

The US Tivo has an Amazon video app, so I don't think the changes announced today will affect whether or not Amazon video turns up on Tivo, one bit.

Presumably this will make an appearance of Amazon more likely on Tivo in the UK as it will now be very similar software to that which is already on Tivo in the US.

I agree , I'm also hoping the software is more likely to make an appearance on my Roku box now as Lovefilm has always been a glaring ommision and Roku has the Amazon Instant app in the US.

After looking it appears the Amazon instant and the current Lovefilm apps are almost identical anyway.

The more apps for streaming video the Tivo has, the better. I can't see why customers would object to it.

If VM see significant numbers of people taking out Netflix and Amazon Instant video subscriptions and reducing their TV package to M, then I guess they could have a re-think?

TiVo has to be more than the apps a decent smart TV will give you for free.

The cost old boy also it could be seen as devaluing the tv packs, others will see it as a cheaper way to get more tv for less.

Carriage deals vary greatly. The only channels that I know of that pay VM to be on the EPG are the shopping channels and some radio channels.

I doubt the music channels have been offered on a cost neutral basis either, but undoubtedly there viewership has decreased and this would be reflected in the carriage costs that VM would be willing to pay.

It would give them a nice outlet to screen the Cahmpions League, and Europa League games they've committed to show free to air.

Indeed that's what l understand is they are showing only one game per team and if that's the case then l think many will be disappointed.

I would be happy to receive ONE channel via VM Anytime. After checking, my Samsung Galaxy tablet is not supported.

Do Sky support the Samsung tablets?

Do VM have any plans to extend the range of devices that Anytime is available on?

Thanks MM.

After selling Smallworld to VM (which only took about four weeks to go through), David, the former owner, has said that he thinks he could have got more money from at least one other party. The reason he didn't was because he thought that VM would be best for his customers and staff in the long term. Particularly their comittment to faster broadband and their contract with TiVo.

He's not gone mad with the money yet, only buying his wife a new car. He is looking into pursuing other business oportunities.

Interestingly, the existing Smallworld PVR can record up to four channels with it's dual tuner!

Edit: Just remembered that he once said that Disney no longer wanted to supply their channels to such a small company and he had to take tnem off. It wasn't too small for VM not to bother with was it! In any case, the only 'work' that Disney had to do was collect the monthly payments!

Even so, you'd think it worth their while to sell their products to as wide an audience as possible. It was paid via a monthly direct debit, so didn't involve much work for Disney. I guess the contract was pretty routine and the feed was sourced from satellite.

Before you had Sky you was singing VMs praise galore now you have Sky you're slating them. When your Sky deal is up you'll be slating Sky :p: atm me and Sky are at loggerheads lol due to them not paying cashback at least VM honour the cashback when they make a offer. I do agree with you however that Skygo is better than Vms anytimetv. To download from Skygo you need to pay a extra £5p/m so download isn't really included as standard plus i've not seen any HD on Skygo yet.
Anyway back on topic 2 new channels rumoured to launch on VM by the end of next month, i on't know what they are yet.

Why ? What difference will that make ? BT haven't paid the vast sums they did to make these games FTA they need a return on their considerable investment and subscriptions are what will drive that.

Watchdogs have 'grave concerns' over Netflix deal with cable giant Comcast
• Netflix pays Comcast to ensure smooth delivery of content
• Free Press president: ‘As a customer you are in the dark here’
theguardian.com, Monday 24 February 2014 17.52 GMT

Netflix HBO Comcast
Netflix is the world’s largest video on demand service.
Consumer groups and media watchdogs on Monday expressed “grave concerns” about Netflix’s landmark pact with cable giant Comcast for improved internet service.

Netflix, the world’s largest video on demand service, announced at the weekend that it had made an undisclosed payment to Comcast for direct access to the cable company’s broadband network, in order to ensure smooth delivery of its content.

The deal came just 10 days after Comcast, the biggest US cable firm, announced a takeover of Time Warner Cable, the second biggest, in a $45bn deal that would hand it the accounts of 30 million cable customers. Netflix had previously accused Comcast of slowing its service in order to favour its own video-on-demand service.

The companies said Netflix would receive “no preferential network treatment” but would benefit from “a more direct connection”. Terms were not disclosed.

Craig Aaron, president of internet rights lobby group Free Press, said he had “grave concerns” about the deal.

“As a customer you are in the dark here,” he said. “Was Comcast degrading Netflix’s service to people as a negotiating tactic? To people, I’d add, who were paying month after month for Netflix’s service.”

Aaron said it looked like Netflix had decided it “better get in now” before Comcast becomes even more powerful, while Comcast appeared to have decided to make a deal that would “silence a major critic” as the regulatory authorities review its mega-merger.

John Bergmayer, senior staff attorney at the consumer rights group Public Knowledge, said: “From what information is public, it appears that the largest ISPs [internet service providers] are demanding payment from networks that deliver content and services that residential broadband consumers demand.”

He said the fact that terms of the deal are secret “raises the question of whether they have something to hide”.

“One way to prevent competitive problems from arising, and to reduce the need for future regulation, is to prevent ISPs from holding other networks hostage. This raises concerns in light of the proposed Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger,” he said.

Public Knowledge has objected to the merger. Bergmayer said that in the light of the Netflix deal the Federal Communications Commission, the Justice Department and Congress should move to “ensure that the broadband market continues to meet the needs of its users, and allows companies like Netflix (and the next Netflix) to offer the services that users have demonstrated they want.”

Comcast is currently legally obliged to treat internet traffic equally – meaning a video stream from Netflix should be as fast as one from its own video service, Xfinity. Recent studies, however, have shown that Comcast users were receiving their Netflix media at significantly slower speeds than those using other internet service providers.

Comcast was obliged to make sure all traffic was treated equally – a concept known as “net neutrality” – after its 2011 merger with NBC Universal. But the agreement expires in 2017 and many consumer groups have expressed concerns that the cable giant’s ultimate goal is a tiered internet service that would make it expensive for new startups to compete and raise prices for consumers.

Netflix is by far the largest generator of internet traffic in the US – accounting for a third of broadband traffic.

“There is no question that there are reals costs to that,” said Bergmayer. “There are servers, wires, labour associated with managing that. What concerns us is not money changing hands but what that money is for. Is it for improving the network or is it about ISPs saying we are selling you access to our customers, we are hedging against losing our cable customers to your services?”

He said the deal could well have been favourable for Netflix.

“There’s no way of knowing,” he said. “But even if it was, what does that mean for Netflix’s competition? Does the first one to get the deal pull the ladder up behind them?”

They don't need to; VM already have Netflix's Open Connect, as do many other UK ISPs.

I'd be surprised if they were allowed to vary the name very much and it would have to include '5' or 'Five' somewhere in the name.

I hope you are right. Sky's Pick TV is a good example of what to expect if Sky win it.

I would like to see BT win the contract because, with BT Sport, this will give them a good foothold in TV and it should enable them to become a credible general entertainment provider as well as providing more competition for Sky to think about.

Not sure about that; after all, ITV are not forced to be 'Channel 3'. I think they'd be OK to call it something else.

True, but ITV and channel 3 have been associated as the same thing for years, so are interchangeable.

Five or 5 are the fifth terrestrial channel and have always been known as 5 or five etc.

I know pretty much nothing about these things, but it seems to me that whoever owns it should include a 5 of some kind in the title.

BBC did report the following when BT got an exclusive £897m three-year deal to broadcast live Champions League and Europa League football matches.

As part of the deal, BT has said it will show at least one match involving each participating British team for free every season.

What is Sky1 showing on Wednesday night?

I never actually said there wouldn't be any games FTA however the vast majority will be behind a paywall.

Sky 1 is a pay TV channel so doesn't qualify as FTA.

With the loss of both European competitions from terrestrial that's a lot of games lost.

Let cool down and wait and see what happen next in the 'Channel 5 sale'.

Have you see this? http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...mond-channel-5

Keep Cool :D

I'm not doubting that should BT buy Channel 5 they'd probably use the channel to show the few FTA UEFA games my point is sadly there'll be far less European football FTA now the rights are solely with a pay TV broadcaster.

I have no issues with BT securing the rights over Sky but its a pity theres now no terrestrial broadcaster part of the deal but I guess that's life.

I haven't slated vm ?????? And I ain't got a crystal ball to tell me when my sky deal is up what I will be saying about sky ;) both have good points but with having both I can give a honest opinion which is what I have done
This is one of the reasons I don't come on here much these days

Be aware you have to update Unblock US if your IP address changes. Has confused me a few times as it just stops working.

Imo there's no point in having Unblockus if you can only use it on a PC or Ipad etc, I understand that you cannot change the DNS settings on the TiVo, and this is the only way that I would want to watch Netflix, so as i have said, it's of no use to me, unfortunately.

I've just received the most up to date VM channel guide, it mirrors what is on the EPG, apart from the fact that Channel 5 +24 is still referred to as 5* +1. I hope this doesn't mean that no more channels are in the pipeline, but can't help thinking that they wouldn't produce a new guide if new channels were imminent (or that they would include any additions like they did with CBS Action).

My total channels in the EPG went down by one today, does anybody know what we've lost?

There are plenty of devices that you can get full 1080p Netflix video on that will work with Unblockus. These include bluray players or streamer boxes such as WDTV SMP, WDTV Play and Apple TV. They start from around £50. They sit nicely under the TV; it's all about whether you mind an extra box or not.

Also tunnelbear is quite good it's a VPN rather than need to set anything up you just dl the software and once registered away you go you just set it to the country you want. It's as easy as 123 lol. But imo unblock-us is the best option as it's quite fast too.

I've got unblock set up on my ps3 aswell as my pc mate. It's really easy to do.

No, it doesn't mean that. There is often very little notice given of new channel launches.

I'm wondering with Lovefilm now re-badged as Amazon Instant if we might see a new app on TiVo? Seems you can download movies on the US TiVo, as well as streaming of course, but I'm sure this would suit a lot of people. VM might not like the idea of direct competition, but perhaps that's one less thing for them to worry about / manage.

Anyone have any info or ideas if it is coming?

not really direct competition - sky movies OD most of the money goes to SKY, Netflix is not owned by VM, the only one is picturebox but if they were that worried they wouldnt have taken on Netflix; I think it be more down to that contract with Netflix as to whether they could take on Lovefilm

WWE Network may launch on the VM Tivo platform early 2015. This is just a rumour i got given so don't read too much into it just yet.

I have to confess to being stumped on the business model of adding OTT apps onto a pay tv platform but that could just be me , it seems a tad risky to me wouldnt it be better for VM to increase its own VOD library possibly having XL and VIP TV packs with heaps of extra On Demand content as a way to encourage people to upgrade.

I would severely doubt that as its not available on the US TIVO as far as I know.

It isn't this is why i'm taking the rumour with a very small pinch of salt for now plus as bananaman said Sky have WWE rights although when the Network launches in the UK later this year i'm not sure how it's going to work. I think the Network in uk will have blackouts for ppv events etc.

Beats me as well, my feeling is (and just an opinion) look to tie in with what seems to be the choice netflix, make it inclusive as price within VM and effectively outsource OD TV and film, might seem a lot say £3 per person cost base to VM but all overheads and costs associated with acquiring OD and films now done by Netflix and VM will not have anything further other than maintain App compatibility.

It has been posted on here that Lovefilm is indeed coming, which fits in with what Liberty say is their strategy of providing content in this way.

However, as expected, no official confirmation yet.
