Fez took ages to patch a game breaking bug because Microsoft charged $50,000 to post updates to the store and the developers backed out. Sony let them do it for free. Sony sent development kits to Indie developers whilst Microsoft ignored them until another of their U-Turns. While Sony put Indie gaming in their E3 presentation Microsoft barely talked about games to boast about their 'exclusive' deal with the NFL.

They've had a funny way of showing it so far. Microsoft are pretty clear that they're positioning this as a home media device that retains a strong interest in gaming. However these features aren't just freebies added on if you want them. They took development time, they took content deals with creators (mostly American for now) and they form part of the way Microsoft markets the console. Time which could well have been spent focusing on the gaming and reaching out to developers.

The Xbox will still have Halo, all the multi platform games and so on. Microsoft will always have Grand Theft Auto, FIFA, Call of Duty and so on on their console. Yet I think Sony's more aggressive courting of developers and their positioning of their console as an gaming machine first will mean it will follow this generations pattern of the Playstation getting the riskier, smaller and more innovative games.

The Xbox still has two very strong cards: Xbox live and that controller. Microsoft know software and that still shows in their LIVE services and their dashboard UI. The rubbish XMB interface and flimsy controller on the PS3 meant I played all multi-platform games on my Xbox and used the PS3 only for the aforementioned Indie games and the exclusives (Heavy Rain, Last of Us).

Still I am in two minds this generation. I honestly probably will get the one with the better reviews as I am so undecided.

Hopefully things will improve now for indie developers, I am not sure if they can patch for free though.

Edit

Yes they can now patch for free on the 360 so I will assume the x1 will be free too.

Re: The Xbox One Thread

Microsoft have also embraced the indie scene (better late than never) , in fact next year every xbox one will be able to be used as a dev kit , they have also changed the way they are going to certify patches/indie games to soled things up and indie devs won't have to have a publisher. after reading many ps4 reviews it seems the xmb is much improved but still get mentioned to be clunky and difficult to navigate , this was one of my main issues with the ps3 , it used to annoy the hell out of me that everything was so damn awkward in navigating and implementing. Xbox live speaks for itself but now with the backup of MS azure data centre infrastructure (the cloud everyone dismisses ) which are arguably (so I've read) the best in the world , if live works better than it does already it's going to leave psn for dust.

I agree, I am just hoping live doesn't have slowdown issues on launch day.

Battlefield 4 is having a lot of server problems at the moment so I hope that will improve for the X1.

So? This doesn't really mean anything. You could develop relatively easily for the 360 but the PS3 got the more vibrant indie scene. It's not a question of if you can even physically develop for it, the fact that Microsoft even had to u-turn on that shows how little they cared for indie games in the first place, but how engaged they are with the developers. Microsoft are not engaged with small studios and Independent developers. Their focus is on the blockbusters when it comes to games. At one point they even had the policy that small developers couldn't even publish on it in the first place!

This is a direct consequence of Microsoft's vision for the One. It's because they view it as a blockbuster console and they don't see where the money is in bothering to deal with the small time developers when they can deal with the NFL. The problem is that it's these smaller studios that can take risks with their ideas as the money isn't as great.

So yes. Microsoft choosing to position their console as a media device and to focus on content producers does speak to their intentions of the console as a gaming device. The better ecosystem for small developers is just as much a feature of the PS4 and the media support is for the One. The question is then which one you want and the ecosystem is more important to me than the media functionality.

Then again the controller, LIVE and my LIVE Account are positives for the Xbox but it's just not as simply as the Xbox being everything the PS4 is plus some features you don't have to use. The PS4 currently stands to be a better pure gaming device at the moment.

I'll probably be going with digital downloads this generation.

SnoopZ 17-11-2013 22:02

Re: The Xbox One Thread

I will too if the cost is the same or similar, although I expect shops to offer disk versions of games a lot cheaper at times, like when i Bought tomb raider for £20 from tesco on the 360 but prices on live were £45 still.

Tezcatlipoca 17-11-2013 22:04

Re: The Xbox One Thread

I'm expecting digital downloads to have the same suggested retail price as disc-based games... which of course would mean that disc-based games would be cheaper as you can always buy them online at less than the official price.

Maybe we'll be lucky, but that's what happened in the current generation... remember the awful prices for Xbox Games on Demand?

Yeah they need to at least match the average price of new games. It might be a few quid cheaper online in which case I would pay more for the convenience. That said you risk losing the games forever when the online service shuts down.

Tezcatlipoca 17-11-2013 22:16

Re: The Xbox One Thread

I'll be sticking with discs, unless:

- Digital downloads are cheap enough that the inability to trade them in doesn't matter.

Or

- Digital downloads can be "traded in" somehow.

There are some games I do keep, because I want to replay them (e.g. Mass Effect, and anything else with a great single-player) or because of the multiplayer... but most other games I play and then trade.

I know this has already been done but I feel like I've got an Xbox One and no games!

PC: FIFA 14. Battlefield 4. COD Ghosts. Steam games and other random crap.
PS4: Assassins Creed black flag. FIFA 14.
Xbox One: Forza 5.

I've been occupied with work so much what am I missing?

Basically I'm always going to swing PC when it comes to Multi Plat. Including Titanfall. For console only multi platform I'll be running Xbox. Why the PS4? I've never played TLOU or any Uncharted game so I'm finally going to head into the world of PS exclusives.

I guess it is going to be difficult for you on consoles to game seeing you seem to game on the PC more.

This is the reason I only game on 1 platform as the other platforms would get neglected if Ighadmore than 1.

I am still waiting for an email from Amazon about my extra controller. The money still hasnt come out of my bank and hasnt even been ring fenced yet. It still shows as delivery eta is 22/11 but im worried now.

Just been reading reading the review on DS and it seems Skype doesnt snap when in a game or another applcation which is very disappointing, the invitation ad shows as demo of this snapped while Fifa is being played.

On the plus side it says that Forza 5 can start playing once 13% has been installed to the HDD from the disk, no word of a % from a DD verison thou.

I have just checked my Amazon order for BF4 and it says 'despatching now'.

Don't worry about your controller, if it doesn't ship before you want it then cancel it and buy in a shop.

Simply add a qualifying video game to your basket, and £22 will automatically be taken off your purchase price. You have until February 28, 2014 to claim your savings.

I see no excuse for any of those omissions, given that MS has been touting this as the ONE BOX YOU NEED, and a true "all-in-one" system.

What's even more pathetic is that the 360 happily supports DD5.1 over optical, and audio/video streaming from any DLNA / UPnP Media server, and audio/video playback from a USB device... why not the Xbox One?

Not everyone has an HDMI AV receiver, plus anyone who has 5.1 headphones is likely to need a Dolby Digital output over optical to be able to use them (I do for my Sharkoons, and I think Turtle Beach ones do too).

So, I shall continue to use my PS3 for DVDs and Blu-ray Discs that have DD5.1 instead of DTS soundtracks, and continue to use my PS3 to stream mp4 videos from my iMac or play mp4 videos from a USB stick.

Also, due to the lack of an iPlayer app or a Sky Go app at launch, I shall continue to use my PS3 for iPlayer and continue to use my 360 for Sky Go.

I would assume (or hope, at least) that those features do get added... But they should have been there at launch.

As it is, the Xbox One is *less capable* than the 360 for various things.

I had thought my PS3 would only get the odd bit of use now if/when I get round to having another playthrough of the Naughty Dog games before selling it, but now it seems it will still be a media device for me too.

Re: The Xbox One Thread

Oh, something else annoying that I forgot to moan about in my previous post:

The HDMI passthrough is active only, not passive. To use anything connected via the passthrough, the Xbox One *must* be fully powered on.

That means if you route your Virgin box or Sky box via the Xbox One, the Xbox One must always be fully on simply to watch TV.

Personally, I love the idea of using the passthrough, and even though we won't have the One Guide at launch I can still see a use for routing my Sky+HD box via the Xbox One.

But... I'm not so sure that Mrs D would be keen on the extra power consumption, or on the increased hassle of using two systems simply to watch TV. Not being a gamer, she won't be "snapping" the TV into the side while playing something and she won't be getting messages or invites while watching Strictly on a Saturday... but she'd still need to use the console as well as the Sky box.

I may just plug my Apple TV into it instead, as that wouldn't be on anywhere near as much as the Sky box.

There are disappointments to be had. The Xbox One supports Play To streaming from Windows 7 and 8 PCs via DLNA, but there's no way to pull content to the system from a PC directly (though the Xbox One does support playback of almost any file your Windows PC recognizes as media, whether music or video). This is a major step back from the Xbox 360's robust local media playback capabilities. Playback from USB storage is similarly a no-go at launch, so ferrying a video on a thumb drive isn't possible on Xbox One yet. It is possible, however, to upload media to your SkyDrive account and view it from there — an example of corporate synergy taking precedence over obvious features.

Network entertainment: DLNA

Looking to bring you more entertainment, Xbox One is a DLNA compatible device, although it currently only natively acts as a player. You can, for example, stream content from your phone to the Xbox One and it will start playing, but you can't initiate that from the console itself. That means it can't go off and find your network storage device to play movies or music you may already have.

To play video or view a photo slideshow you'll need the Xbox Video app installed and to play music you'll need Xbox Music installed, after that, it detects the incoming stream and opens as necessary.

We found streaming from the HTC One was straightforward thanks to that device's in-built sharing options, but we also used the Skifta app to do the same thing and there are many other DLNA apps and devices out there. Skifta will also let you stream content from server to console via your phone, so is an easy work around.

There is no evidence of this from what i have seen, no article and nothing in any of the reviews. My AMP is an active and does passthrough while in low standby mode, so surely Xbox One can do this?

You have to have the Xbox One turned on, however, as there's no passive HDMI pass-through: if your Xbox is in standby, you can't watch TV.

Also:

The passthrough does not support surround sound, so if you want surround sound from the device you connect to the passthrough you'll need to also connect it directly to your surround system (e.g. optical from a Sky box to an AV receiver). There is an option to enable it, but it's a beta option as it's flaky and can make things worse.

I ordered from Tesco as well and it says delivery on Sat but I had an email yesterday saying it would definitely be delivered on Friday.

I'll be seriously p*ssed off if it doesn't seeing as how they took the money out of my account about 6 weeks ago, the least they can do is deliver it on time!

This was a SW scheduling issue pure and simple, and I know people are disappointed, but we will have it. “Anyone with an HDMI receiver should be fine, as we pass the uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 through HDMI as well as DTS. Even if you have a Dolby only HDMI receiver (which I'm not sure exists), you will still get 5.1 or 7.1 sound since those receivers should accept uncompressed surround.”

I posted a list yesterday and BF4, AC4 and a few others all priced at a rip off £54.99, so i have made a decision to stick to disc versions rather than waste £7s more going digital.

I may buy DR3 on digital though as that is also £44.99 although DR2 didn't really grab me. I will get AC4 on sunday in town as i had it ordered from Amazon but i canceled it hoping to go digital but not at that price.

Just had my tracking info and the X1 is at a Parcel Force hub and delivery is for tomorrow, i just hope if it comes while i am at work in the morning then i will be able to collect it from their depot as soon as i get home, actually it maybe possible to collect from the local post office but i am not holding my breath due to its size!

edit

Looks like i can collect from my village post office! :)

What happens if I’m not home when my delivery is made?

If no-one is at home to take the delivery, Parcelforce will leave a card at your address and take your console to the nearest Post Office.
Tesco seem to be giving out more than the usual email for an item, they even changed their Tesco Direct logo to an Xbox One.

Dear Customer,

Congratulations! You are about to become the proud new owner of an Xbox One.

We're pleased to let you know that your order has now been dispatched and will be delivered on the launch day of Friday 22nd November.

Xbox One First-Time Connection Guide

Congratulations! You are about to become the proud new owner of an Xbox One.

The first thing you’ll need to do is set-up your console. This will include:

- Selecting your language, location and time zone

- Choosing your display settings

- Managing your privacy settings

- Setting up Kinect (optional)

- Signing in using your Microsoft account

As part of this process you will need to connect your Xbox One to the internet and run a one-time system update. During this time your Xbox One will be inactive. This update is required in order to use your Xbox One for the first time. Once completed you will be able to play any disc based game without ever connecting online again.

The system update will restart your Xbox One upon completion. After the console restarts, you can continue with set-up.

Should you require support at any stage of this process please visit http://support.xbox.com

Once you complete the last step of the set-up and sign-in process, you will be taken to the Xbox One Home screen. From here you can continue personalising your console and get going with your first game.

Welcome to Xbox One!

I've been checking my Amazon order throughout the day using the Amazon app on my phone.

It had been on "Dispatching soon" all day, although it had changed to "Dispatching now" by the time I got home from work.

No dispatch email yet. I selected "Expedited Delivery" rather than the free delivery. I'm hoping that the "delay" is actually because of the delivery being expedited, if that makes sense... i.e. it can be sent out later as it's going by a faster method or something.
