Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

I'm not sure wheather a take over is a good or a bad thing, but it would be nice to have a cable company that has more money than Sky.

Because of their money resources, Sky leads the way in so many areas and VM's once killer advantage, fibre broadband, is now no longer there because Sky now offer that. VM even seem slow on maximising the advantages of Tivo (multi room, ipad, decent connected content etc.), presumably due to lack of money.

Personally, I find VM as a company very good, and there is always the risk that customer service can suffer when taken over by a bigger company, so that is a concern. Tivo leaves the Sky box way behind in my view, but it is the only thing that they lead sky on technology wise. With a cable company with more money, it would be great to see Sky trying to catch up and not being able to rule the roost on TV channels.

I feel that a combined EE/VM will dominate the telecoms maket and present a challege to BT and Sky, I tell you what why don't Sky sell their TV, Phone and Broadband divsion (in exchange for BT's Sports Broadcasting assets) to BT.

This will mean (if TalkTalk can make a sucess out of YourView) that the UK will have 3 major telcom companies competing with each other for TV/Phone/Internet and Sky will focus on bradcasting (maybe we will get more of their services!)

With the shutting down of BBC HD and its replacement of a HD version of BBC Two, will Football be shown on that channel (rather than BBC Three)

BBC Two HD plus BBC One Scotland, BBC One Wales and BBC One N. Ireland are all set to launch sometime from September to December 2012.

No date has been given but The BBC has confirmed that it will happen after the UK Olympics.

4Seven and Ailbi HD are launching in July.

What will Virgin Media do with the 24 SD Channels and 25 HD Channels left over after the UK Olympics end?

There is a chance even with the launch of BBC 2 HD that BBC HD channel will continue for a while as there is a spare freeview HD mux being squeezed out that there arn't currently any takers for.

I was pondering the question last night of what will happen when BBC hd is replaced by BBC 2 hd. I'm sure, since the digital switch over is almost complete and everyone can get BBC 3, that when they need to show two games at once they'll continue to show both in hd, even if it means BBC 2 hd isn't a simulcast of BBC 2 for that period, or perhaps even by shifting regular BBC 2 content to BBC 3 or BBC 4 for a night.

So to spoil two channels for people who don`t want football. This is what the Red button should be used for. :D

What do you prefer picture quality or sound quality? I guess both are important.

Would it be possible to get HD sound formats on the Sky movie channels such as DTS HD and True HD?

Well it should not cost much to operate 3 HD Channels

Maybe the unused slot on Freeview will be used by BT for the HD version of their "BT Sport" channel

Once a lot of SD and HD slots on VM are released after the Games, what SD (or HD Channels would you want on VM?

Iam watching sky 1 at the mo and they had an trailer on for sky atlantic and from 6pm weekdays you can watch ER and House which has been on so many other channels .... So my question is why does anyone want sky atlanatic just for repeats?

Iam sure you can watch these programmes on other channels or even on demand.

I Personally iam not bothered about getting sky atlantic just like every channel eventually they all start to show repeats.

Sky Atlantic is no different from any other pay TV channel in that it shows repeats , do you seriously expect every hour to be filled with new content  Isn't this why the PVR was introduced to allow you to series link your favourite shows from each channel , each to their own but in my opinion Atlantic has shown some great shows of late , that said I don't believe any platform should pay over the odds to carry it.

Sadly they have got HBO Content and more of Skys best shows

All you are doing is showing a HD version of the same channel (nearly all programmes are filmed in HD anyway), so there should not be much expence in the first place

I get the fact that they cant show new stuff all the time but on the other hand 6pm so called primetime!!

I agree with your last quote no platform should pay over the odds for it.

If l righty remember l said it was possible but as we all know the talks failed but this is now this year and things can change very quickly in a everchanging TV landscape.

Broadcast: ESPN review options after Premier League rights loss.

Media web site Broadcast is reporting:

A variety of options are understood to be under consideration by the broadcaster, including cutting subscription costs, targeting new rights in different sports, and merging with Sky’s sports bundle.

But if Virgin Media are in talks with BSkyB to carry Sky Atlantic we may also get Pick TV +1, Sky News HD & Sky Sports News HD as part of that new deal.

But saying that I have not seen any update on Virgin being in talks with BSkyB over Sky Atlantic in months.

June 2019 or 2020. A 10 year carriage agreement was agreed as part of the sale of VMTV to SKY.

Are you suggesting that ESPN might sell UK channel (SD and HD) to Sky Sports?

If that was the case will ESPN (UK) become Sky Sports 5 and ESPN HD (UK) become Sky Sports 5 HD?

It looks like VM (or whatever its called by then) will have to wait for Sky Atlantic for another 8 years then!

My feeling is that VM will not be around in 8 years or so. A company providing cable possibly , but as it is setup - I feel that is unlikely. Things move on, Do not think that as a company VM thinks out of the box enough:shocked: to attract the sales needed to survive that long .Me:) :sniper: Den.

Making a profit ( if only "small one") will attract other providers ( or even non providers think BT & Footie no one saw that coming)

The TiVo will be NON state of the art in the next few years if it is left to crawl along as it is. The only great thing is the record two watch third option.Which in our house has become watch one ( on rare occasions record four - video senders are such a boon :p:)
It will fall further behind with out a major re-think. Just look at the moans on other web sites. Given the limited sales base, it will never be a game changer, while partnering with Virgin.
Sorry (and I understand the arguments) but think what a company such as SKY would do if they went over to it
If they see it as a threat / or great marketing tool , I would think in all likelihood that they will make a play for it.
having said all this for the most part it does what I want ( a Dynamic EPG would be good) Sand bags at the ready :p:

Two players whom might go for it. Leaving the biggy out ( Comcast)
Charter or Cox communication . Not sure what they are like these days as friends are all on Comcast. Mind you if they did the buying power they might bring to the table could prove interesting.

A) its rentals not sales :o:

b) Given that people have no choice in the matter ( if opting for cable what was the rental figures take up pre TiVo )

c) The laserdisc player sold a total of 16.8 million pieces and look what happened to that!

Well there was the original alpha/beta testers, then the 'Tivo 500' then those that got the engraved remote through the post (free Tivo for life?) then there was the raffle. I think that probably covers more than your 2000, then there are people like me who where offered the Tivo if we kept the V+, now I know there was an additional outlay for the Tivo but the ongoing multiroom discount (my bill also fell by a couple of £'s per month) more than offset the cost so in reality a free Tivo.

So all in all I think the figure of 'Certainly not many more than 2000' is probably well short of the mark, add that to the comments of the CEO in the Earnings Presentation & Strategy Update on 8th February 2012 that box costs can be waived if the customer has the potential to deliver long term value means that, to some extent at least, the numbers of free boxes out there is probably continuing to rise.

Cheers

Yes, and? There are offers all the time. A Tivo is still a Tivo.

I count no more than the 2,500 outlined above. But then they are still "a Tivo in a customers house". As are the rest; however they're accounted for.

Unless you're looking to a. be pedantic and b. any excuse to belittle the success of the VM Tivo.

Well it is. It's not perfect, of course, but then no-one has ever said it is. It is, however, the best bit of tech I've ever owned; which is why I've had one since 2002! (Apart from a short period of having a V+. Talk about a backward step!! :( I hated it.

I always wonder if the reason that some people are over pedantic and obsessive is because they are suffering from some form of autism (possibly undiagnosed) or if they do it on purpose to simply be vexatious?

I think Carl's right, isn't he, that you can only get a sky+ hd box, albeit with different hard drive sizes, or a sky hd box? If so that's exactly the same as Virgin, and in fairness to them it makes no sense to offer two different types of pvr, especially when they're so very different.

That part of list was updated months ago before BBC did an deal with Sky to launch 48 Olympic Channels (24 in SD and HD).

You also say your VM insider has told VM are in talks..Still over a year later no news. Have you ever made a correct prediction? Nope!

I cant talk for Den but...

Me and Den can only go on what our insiders can or will tell us.

Here is the latest I got (As posted by me on Wednesday July 20th) http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35...-post1221.html

borrissey 21-06-2012 22:19

VM should offer HD sound with there rental movies that would be something Sky doesn't.

Sky offer 5.1 Dolby Digital which is good enough for most.

Virgin Media may move Ailbi +1 next week.

I think with Ailbi HD launching on July 3rd on Virgin Channel 131 we may see Ailbi +1 moving to Channel 194 on Tuesday or Wednesday so that Virgin can tell viewers of the move ahead of July 3rd.

So, have the VM olympic EPG numbers been confirmed or not? If so, what are they? Cheers.

Still not confirmed.

They are rumoured on DS Forum as being on:

-BBC 24 live Olympics channels in SD on Virgin Channels 574 to 597.
-BBC 24 live Olympics HD channels Virgin Channels 550 to 573.

From July 25th.

Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 3 to launch next week.

Just to let everyone know that Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 3 will launch on July 2nd - only on Cable Forum.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Guardian Media: GMG Radio sold to Global for £50m.

Guardian Media Group sells radio business, including Real Radio and Smooth Radio networks, to Global Radio for estimated £50m.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012...old-global-50m

Media Boy thinks:
-Global Radio may axe Smooth Radio on Virgin Channel 916 and relaunch Chill or The Arrow on Digital TV.

This would be a nice one for Virgin Media to lure onto TiVo as an app. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...n-Britain.html

Any chance of this coming soon?

Would never happen as Google TV is a TV service with its own set top box.

Does that even count as a channel launch, as I'm sure they are just rebranding the Q channel.
