This reminds me of the (one) time a similar issue hit the old Series 1. That was sorted in around the same sort of time-frame too :)

Can you transfer recorded content from Tivo on to a DVD via a DVDR? Thanks for any advice:)

My TiVo hard drive is getting really noisy now and recordings are skipping. If I phone VM and I need a replacement TiVo box can I back up my recordings, thumbs ups and wish lists?

I have the launch 1TB.

Its not possible, you will lose everything unless you copy your recordings in real time to a DVD Recorder via SCART

borrissey 16-11-2012 11:37

Damn that's gutting, should be a way for a VM engineer to back up your old box and transfer it to your new TiVo.

carlwaring 16-11-2012 11:39

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I'm not sure cloud backup of whole drives will ever be possible, but I would hope that SL/WL backup might be implemented at some point.

MalteseFalcon 16-11-2012 11:48

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Hopefully Virgin will be looking into doing that at some point in the future. Gutting to lose your entire content. I so nearly did that the other week, went to do a restart and for some reason (I was half asleep) I went into reset everything. Luckily Virgin have that press such and such then such and such to go ahead screen otherwise I would have lost a lot of stuff.

Not to take the drama out of that - but that is exactly why the extra steps are there.

MalteseFalcon 16-11-2012 12:43

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Good job, stops idiots like me when half asleep to do jobs like that on a TiVo box.

borrissey 16-11-2012 13:05

I know there's copyright laws around back up and copying data etc, but they could do it so just VM engineers can access it for when boxes break.

It's less about that and more about the fact that TiVo isn't desgined to allow a wholesale transfer from one box to another

Aside from the legalities, (a) it would take far too long, and (b) boxes are often replaced for faulty hard drives, so you couldn't get the data off anyway.

borrissey 16-11-2012 13:41

Shame! You lose all your series links, thumbs up, wish lists, recordings :(

BenMcr 16-11-2012 13:45

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Now that VM have got the link into TiVo via TV Anywhere, there may be options they can add to that

When l had a problem on my TiVo box, they attempted to repair it, but failed and they replaced the box - l lost everything that was recorded.

carlwaring 16-11-2012 17:12

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Did you eventually find out what the problem actually was, Arthur? Just interested to know. I can't think there's much to go wrong in them, really.

Arthurgray50@blu 16-11-2012 17:42

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Hi Carlwaring, the engineers said that there was a problem on the cable coming into the house, not enough power.
And that the original engineer was sending more power up to a second box, normal box causing problems on that one.

Eventually they checked the TiVo box and found that the box needed replacing - they wouldn't give a reason. All the power coming into the house has been increased to hits full capacity. Each engineer called gave a different reason for the fault, but we wasn't told anything until l said l was ghoing back to Sky. Then they told us that the box was faulty.

well got the tivo linked and streaming,Dont know why i bothered 150 programmes and all thats allowed to stream is 17 eps of hart of dixie off the reality channel are allowed broadcaster restictions. This is getting behond a joke its worse than the ipad for streaming channels and i didnt think that would be possible !!!!!!!!!!!

carlwaring 17-11-2012 15:50

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

You can't really blame VM for any restrictions that broadcasters impose. This is probably why there are limited channels streaming at the moment too as contracts need to be re-negotiated.

I can understand that carl,But come on mate they have been talking about streaming content from when the tivo first came out.Common sense surely would have been to re-negotiate contracts prior to launch,I can understand differculty with sky but bbc,Itv and CH4/5 thats bad

Does the search facility on Tivo not cover channel 5 shows. Was trying to highlight to Mrs Ghost how good the search was for any shows she likes. I asked her to name a show and she said Dallas (:( yeah I know) tried search and no listing, asked her to name another, she said Eddie Stobart (:(:() again tried search and nothing:D Does it not list anything that would be on Ch5?

carlwaring 18-11-2012 18:42

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Should do. You mean on the Tivo itself?

Dallas has finished now, so that might explain why that wasn't in there :)

And I just did a quick search in DigiGuide for "Mrs Ghost" and it couldn't find anything in the last year on any channel called that :D

To answer the question though, no there is no reason it would not search for shows on Channel 5.

Yeah mate I but it should still come up with an entry though, no? :confused:I thought it did so you could set a wishlist or it would advise if u liked that you'd like this etc? So the search only works for what is on now or in on demand?

I saw 3 VM TiVo boxes in Cash Generator today. Reason I was in there I lost my ring in the gym the other day and was handing out pictures of it to shops in my area I hate those kind of places.

How can I report this or does it happen all the time, nothing VM can do about it?

Hello all, thinking of coming back to Virgin as they have offered me 6 months half price entertainment,Tivo box with no up front cost, extra V+box, not sure what they mean by 6 months half price entertainment, dose that mean i pick what package i would like.
1 i was comparing packages & noticed that VIP has a lot more channels than XL & XL has not got some channels it had when i was wit Virgin last year, i'm i reading this wrong.

2 dose Tivo now have reminders, & the red button for Football First as neither was there when i left.

Wonder if anyone knows a solution to this please.

I have a wishlist setup to record a programme, which is doing exactly what I asked it to do, except it is recording them all on the AD channel when I want it recorded on the HD channel. Is there anyway I can get the wishlist to do this without changing each programme manually, as it would take me hours to do so.

Thanks.

If you know the show will always be shown on a HD channel, you can set the 'HD' sub category in the wishlist.

If you're not sure that it will always be shown on an HD channel, make two wishlists for the same show, but include the 'HD' sub category in one of them, and make that the higher priority in your series links list (which also lists wishlists).

MalteseFalcon 26-11-2012 14:15

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

OK, thanks for that will do that in a minute. I will need to do 2 different ones as it is on More 4 as well so there will be times there won't be HD broadcasts of it.

It worked, after I rectified my mistake. I did the 2 wishlists, set them both to record automatically and the AD one was still set to record. Until I remembered about moving the HD wishlist higher than the other wishlist and all is fine now. Thanks.

Usually within 24 hours, but that depends on someone putting the amendments into the system. Send an email to tivoguideerrors@virginmedia.co.uk to be on the safe side.

jtaylor06 22-12-2012 00:26

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Wouldn't it be a good idea to give the broadcaster access to their channels on the system so that they can modify it themselves which then sends a ping to the box every 15 minutes as to whether certain programming information needs to be updated.

Jameseh 22-12-2012 06:46

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Or they could just add a dynamic EPG. If Freeview has a feature, Virgin should certainly have it.

No, that's not normal. The terrestrial channels only provide EPG updates once a week, but even so you should have data up to 02/02. Does the data for BBC1 run out at the same time? How about 4HD?

Just tried it on Dexter on cbs action, and can confirm you get a little pop up from Tetley asking if you've paused for a cuppa. Quite clever actually, not really intrusive, and appropriate to the circumstances.

---------- Post added at 21:05 ---------- Previous post was at 21:05 ----------

Should add, you can hide it by pressing down and it doesn't come back when you next pause.

---------- Post added at 21:31 ---------- Previous post was at 21:05 ----------

Also I'm not getting it on the Daily Show on Comedy Central Extra, so is this just a cbs thing?

Thanks for that Lew. :)

I'm still interested to see and announcement about this from VM. Surely they haven't let it arrive without a little fanfare?

As it only seems to be on CBS Action at the moment I'd imagine they're just testing it.

Hi :dozey:
it may have something to do with this

Brandon said Virgin Media was also developing advanced on-demand advertising services for the TiVo platform.

Possibly, although to clarify, I got the ad during playback of a programme recorded in my shows.

Looking at the photo I have to say I hope Sky don't go down this route its reminiscent of an ad supported app , I much prefer how they did it before on the discovery bar.

Any chance of a TiVO speed and feature update soon?

Do VM still use the discovery bar as a way to serve up adverts also?

I thought this new advertising whilst paused etc was in place of the discovery bar ads, not as well as! There's risk of advert overload here......

Has the second core been enabled yet? I know there was talk of that being activated a while ago but I've not been keeping up with the TiVo news. :)

We ought to be getting the HD versions for the menus that we still have in SD. The US have got them now, so another thing to add to 'Coming soon'.

How long have previous updates taken to arrive on the UK TiVo after initially launching in the US?

There is no set rule. It all depends on release cycles. There is a central TiVo development team, and when new features are ready they get deployed into the next release in each country. Sometimes VM has had things before the US, such as reverse EPG and the miniguide.

I have suddenly lost the functionality of the TiVo app, I don't think it is the homeplug as the TV guide forms then comes up with a communication error, any help would be greatly appreciated?

Ps I have already restarted my cable modem and wireless router

Excellent news as why swap the best STB on the market for something that's inferior.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Tivo could do with a 'holiday mode'. Looking at the number of series links, wish lists and 'one offs' we record and the fact the box is normally sitting at about 80-85% I think this would be a good idea.

Let me explain - an additional setting where you can tell Tivo you're going away and then the box only records the things you have marked as very important (Mrs G's soapy's in our house). As our box stands at the moment when we go away later in the year our options will be:
1. Take our chances and see what records and what doesn't.
2. Go on a crazy deleting spree before we go.
3. Remove most of the series links and wishlists.
4. Not go on holiday!!

To me it's a feature that would put Tivo even further infront of the competition as I'm sure I'm not the only person who is faced with such stressful situations!

Cheers

Grim

That's what "Keep Until I Delete" is for. Tell it the important ones, and let it manage the rest.
