I don't want a Dish on my wall though. No one has in my street will spoil the look of house.

They're releasing a new version of their software in the States. This will be the same software, albeit modified and with a different look, that VM will use.

Indeed, and if the industry speculation is right (and all signs point to it being so) it's going to be heavily flash based, which is going to seriously limit the boxes the software can be run on as there's only a very few stb chipsets that can run flash lite, and afaik none of the current VM ones are equipped with a flash lite capable chipset (the samsung v+ might be but I can't find exactly what chipset it uses, but it's unlikely). I'd put money on the new HD only box supporting it though as it'd make no sense to release it otherwise.

IMO the new HD box is going to be pushed as the tivo non-pvr (as the tivo announcement said they'll be doing the software for non-pvrs as well) and we'll see another box appear as the tivo pvr. I'd also guess there will be a premium for having the tivo boxes similar to the V+ one now. Tivo will be a massive selling point especially if they take full advantage of all the features rather than crippling it down to just another pvr, so it'll likely come at a premium.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

I dunno if I'm right, or even if this is technically correct, but isn't the software supposed to be all done at the headend, then 'streamed' to the box?
Same for recording in the future?

I'm probably all wrong, but hopefully someone can back me up :)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

The box still needs software on it, if it is all done over the network and you just have a dumb box I can see this being one very slow device.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

I can't see Tivo offering a slow second rate service no way.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

We don't know anything ither then, a Tivo interface is coming, it will be better then what we currently have.

If you lead/listen to the various intervies that Berkett has given not only are we getting a unified Tivio experince (for all boxes) but mobile content as well as the ablity to watch via a PC (could this have something to do do with Living and Bravo going on the Sky Player).

to be honest i dont see what the new TiVo press release has to do with VM. the thing is its all for the US and just because VM has an agreement with TiVo doesnt mean we will actually get anything that remotely resembles this.

Until VM and TiVo show something here in UK there is no reason to get excited about it.

Ummm you don't own the box now why would you own it later? I reckon it can be applied to existing boxes because why would they bring out the Samsung V+ and the V HD box (soon) if they were gonna be old tech by the end of the year?

sure i dont own the box but i payed £150 for the privilage of having one installed in my home and i cant see VM just installing them for free if you want the pleasure of having one.
i think your right i cant see VM making thousands of SA V+ boxes obsolete for the sake of a new interface.

This is the sort of ui that we'll be getting though as Berkett specifically said look at tivo's new flash ui, whether it has the web elements is debatable, but I hope VM don't cripple it and it does, as being able to pull up that level of information on actors and directors is awesome.

Unless the existing boxes can run flash lite (and I very much doubt any but the new V HD box can) then it can't be.

Not of this UI no. The entire base of this UI is flash lite.

Now they might be able to port their older UI, but really, what's the point? VM will want to use this partnership to upsell. I wouldn't be surprised if it was free for XL subscribers only, and subbed on lower tiers the same as V+.

It's the functionality of TIVO we all want. VM will adapt it to their requirements. There's hardly going to be an option to order a 10 dollar film from netflix, as an example.

What excites me about this is not so much what it'll be able to do today, but what it'll be able to do in the future. I've no interest in searching for and watching youtube vids on the telly. But having an interface that may be able to search for my favourite tv series, or film on the web, is of interest to me. Especially if I can then download it to the cable box to watch it on the telly when it suits or transfer it to the mobile.

The tivo UI will be VM's interface for all their services, not just tv.

Looks nice, can't see us getting anything like that as it looks far too good. Would make the Sky EPG seem quite dated. I doubt the SA can push a Flash front end and I am not convinced that there will be new boxes as Tivo is going on all boxes according to Berkett and the cable cos have never been fond of splashing out on new hardware.

I have to agree, but just the fact of applying Virgin Media branding to that would help a lot, anything but blue and gold!

Also it might look great in motion. Fingers crossed...

I know most people want the tivo features I just hope Virgin actually have a decent ui for once and make all this wait worthwhile.

Is all the searching on the internet via your tv really needed especially when most people have computers?? It just seems that those sort of features would just be added because they could. What happened to just watching tv? :dozey:

I wouldn't mind being able to search and watch youtube stuff on the box especially if it gave access to the full range of 4oD stuff.

The one thing that I would love for TV series is that it could record across multiple channels and put the epsiodes in the correct order.

Indeed. Did used to be easier when there was just a few channels to watch, but it helped that the quality of programmes used to be far higher than now.

This is all about monetising VM's VOD content and possible future video download service. VM can insert ads into their VOD content and this interface will tell them and advertisers what ads we're looking at. Very valuable info to some.

Leaving aside youtube, but that's exactly the point of it.

It'll be one interface to search CH4's limited stuff on VM's VOD service, but the same page will also show the full 4oD web stuff too. So, to you and me, we won't know or care whether we're searching and watching VM's own internal VOD servers or getting the stuff via the web.

I understand that they have to do whatever the can to stay relevant and make money but they seem to be forgetting that some people just want to watch tv and are not interested in the on -demand content. Wont they have to try and convince those people (like myself) that this is actually the future for tv?

Guess i'm humped anyway since they can't delivery vod to me now how can they do it in the future when they are struggling with new technology.

Everyone should be getting VOD now, have you phoned and asked them what the issue is?

As for convincing you, they'll still be normal tv, so don't worry. But the golden nugget to come is being able to watch whatever we want when we want. Although those of us with good broadband connections and access to "proper" usenet, can do it already.;)

Oh yeah a million and one times and they still can't figure it out and at this moment seem to have given in.

You have a point I download what I want to watch when I want to watch it so I doing it already but it's good to see that traditional tv will survive for those people who need it and want it....like myself

Well there is a little bit of reading between the lines, if it is all customers it is unlikely that Virgin will replace 3.5 million boxes, they are cashed strapped as is. Sounds more like the existing boxes will run the interface. That is just what i read into it.

Edit:

Just had a look at the engadget video, nice interface but if that is running on dedicated Tivio hardware and runs that slow the current cable boxes won't cut it at all.

As I said, the last question on the q4 earnings was about tivo and stbs, and Berkett stated that they will replace a significant number of stbs.

You can read into what you like, the facts of the matter are the current boxes are unlikely to run this interface as they have no flash lite support, and Berkett himself has said they will be replacing a significant amount of boxes. But feel free to take tivo being available to all customers to mean it'll run on those very boxes he's said he's going to replace.

VM are not cash strapped, they have significant free cash flow.

I can't remember where i read this but i heard that Virgin media will be using one interface rather than having two. So it stand to reason that all boxes will get Tivo software like a new EPG and tv guide but only the v+ boxes will truly benefit from the Tivo features.

Here is the latest I have got to date.

Sky1 HD on Virgin Media?
Maybe Virgin has sign an deal with Sky for LIVING HD to launch on Sky and Sky1 HD to launch on Virgin Media. (At time of posting I did not have any info from my Insiders that Sky1 HD is joining.)

History HD on Virgin Media?
I do not know yet if this DS Forum rumoured is an lie or not but with Military History launching on Virgin next month this channel may launch as well.

Discovery HD to launch at the end of April or in May?
The latest I have is Spring.

Virgin in talks with UKTV?
We all know that YeSTERDAY +1 and Eden +1 is coming later this year but no launch date.

Virgin in talks with Univerisal?
Univerisal own channels like CNBC, Movies 24 and Sci-Fi so if Virgin do sign an new deal we may get Sci-Fi + 1 and Sci-Fi HD on Virgin Media.

ITV1 HD coming soon?
The boss of Virgin Media says last week that he hope to have ITV1 HD on Virgin Media by June.

1) I do not think anybody could do such a thread because nobody really knows until virgin media announce it.

2) is probably nearer the mark as thats where i think most of the facts seem to come from.

Virgin Media has also secured mobile and online broadcasting rights in the UK to a range of Turner Broadcasting content.

The arrangement means that Virgin Mobile customers will be able to access mobile versions of popular shows from the Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito, along with simulcast news from CNN.
So I take it there are some big things to come this year, maybe waiting for the Tivo stuff to be done. This is the second deal with a boradcaster that has been done with these rights in mind, the other being Disney.

I really can't see SKY relinquishing their premier channels and as suggested earlier their red button service unless they are forced to. After all they are SKY's carrot to get new customers and indeed existing VM customers to sign with them and not VM.

Interesting comment left on this page by "Big Red" today, bit of an update on his previous post (bottom of page):

No idea of the validity of the comments, but there does seem to be a new HD rumour every other day at the moment. Lets hope there's no smoke without fire.
