I think it's only right Giggs takes it, he's been performing better than some players 10 years younger than himself.

Re: Football : Season 08/09
Now it's getting interesting...
Looks like Chelsea are bottling it. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I don't want the scousers to win, but it would be fun to hear what the Chelsea fans have to say after them being so cocky thinking they are already through to the semi-finals after the first leg, if the scousers end up going through that is...
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
That was a good game for the neutrals. :)
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Yep you gotta hand it to the scousers, they know how to lose in style :D
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Barca will rip Chelsea apart if they defend like that against them. Good fun to watch though.

Who have Chelsea got at left back? Whoever it is will be marking Messi....I predict a bloodbath....

It wont be Ashley Cole because he will be suspended, so maybe Belletti or Ferreira?? Either way i also predict a bloodbath if what happened to Bayern last week is anything to go by. |

I really enjoyed the game tonight, the only disappointing part was we lost it in the first leg. One of the best games i've seen all season and it'll be interesting to see how Chelsea progress.

Re: Football : Season 08/09
Great performance tonight, having Rio back was key, he's so much clamer on the ball than any of our other defenders and what a hit from Ronaldo, don't think many other players would think about shooting from there let alone getting it on target and scoring.
Bring on the gooners :D |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
United v Barcelona final anyone?
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I can see Chelsea picking up in a couple weeks, so I reckon it'll be an all-English final, quite probably United vs Chelsea again. Though from a neutral standpoint, I wouldn't mind Arsenal putting one over Barcelona again, in revenge for 2006.
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I can't see Chelsea in the final, their backline is looking pretty weak right now.

Re: Football : Season 08/09
I do think Arsenal are in great form at the moment, and only have the CL to play for, especially after the get knocked out of the FA cup on Saturday, but I do hope Man U beat them so we can avenge last years result.
I think Chelsea will beat Barca over 2 legs. Bring on Man U and this time it won't go to penalties. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Arsenal are in good form, and United are not in the form they were a month or so ago. So I think Arsenal do stand a good chance of beating United. Considering we do have a 50/50 ratio against them I think it's a hard game to call.
I don't think Chelsea will beat Barca though, So I predict a Arsenal vs Barca final. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I don't think there's much between all four sides. Too close to call. I'm looking forward to both semis.
If I was forced to put money on it I've got a sneeky feeling for Arsenal this year....... but then again they've lost Gallas, and MU have Ferdinand so maybe they'll retain it..... but Terry will be back and Drogba is on fire so the blues look good..... but when Barca play like they did against BM they're unstoppable..... why have I so many splinters on my ar$e? |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I'm not saying this as a Spurs fan but I think there is more chance of Chelsea beating Barcelona than Arsenal beating United. United have been in patchy form lately but Ferguson appears to have steadied the ship somewhat (thanks in no small part to Macheda). Even a shakey United team can deal with Arsenal. If gooners think they can walk over United like they did with Villareal, they are much mistaken.
ATM i'd say Barcelona would edge United in the final, but you never know what happens between then and now. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I don't think it's fair to say "even a shakey United team can deal with Arsenal". A much less shaky United team lost to Arsenal at the Emirates earlier in the season and that was when Arsenal were not in the form they are in now.
United still do not look like the team that swept all before them a few months ago, They look beatable and far from as convincing as before. Arsenal are coming into form at the right time of the season and it would be foolish to want to play them now. I see United being only slim favourites before the match. Of course, United will rise their game. Hopefully Arsenal will too. No one is saying Arsenal will walk all over United but I think it's going to be close. It's gonna be great :D |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I think most unbiased football fans know that the best match would be between the two best teams in the world with the two best players in the world - Man Utd v Barca
But the more i think about it the more i think Chelsea have a better chance than most are giving them. Barca's lead in la liga has gone down to 6 points ahead of Madrid who were truely awful against Liverpool, but if Barca play like they did against Bayern last week, they should win comfortably. We're getting key players back at the right time (Rio, Berbatov etc) and Arsenal are starting to pick up injuries, even though Arsenal are in good form i think we are regaining ours and showed it last night, so i reckon we should win. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
2 upsides to United winning the final. 1st would obviously be winning the trophy and secondly would likely be the sacking of Arsene Wenger. Think about it - if they finish empty handed this season again it would be 5 years since they won a trophy and I can't see the Arsenal board putting up with that, especially with Real Madrid apparently being interested in him.

I can see him staying, he has full support of the club. The only way he would go is if he wanted to leave, which I again do not see happening. I can wait longer for trophies, as can most Arsenal fans. As long as it looks like Arsenal are not seriously regressing.. |

Not the most inspiring game you will see, but that Wembley pitch is awful.

There was the first double win, then the team changed quite a bit and no trophies for a while. Then the second double winning side where we were very good for a few seasons (our 'best' so far). Re: Football : Season 08/09
The problem with Wenger is he brings in talent from French clubs, when there's plenty in England for him to pick. It's frankly embarassing everytime I watch an Arsenal game to find so few English players in an English teams' squad.
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Quote:
So Arsenal haven't won a trophy in 4 years because we have too few English players? Yeah, that makes sense. What you actually mean is; that's your problem with Wenger. There were 2 English players in Arsenal's squad yesterday. There were 3 English players in Chelsea's squad yesterday. So i guess you're embarrassed by Chelsea too, right? And please explain why their lack of English players hasn't hampered any success, or the success of Arsenal prior to the last 4 years. |

Re: Football : Season 08/09
It may well be my problem with Wenger. I just think he's a t**t. :p:
What I object to is Arsenal and Chelsea and the like not bringing in more home talent, always looking overseas. Man Utd have more home-grown players in their squad than arguably any of the top 4, only Liverpool can probably boast more via their academy. Chelsea have gelled as a team more than Arsenal have, and that coupled with a certain J Mourinho won them their success. Granted the Gouners have probably been hampered by injury more than most over the past few years, but you cannot expect to bring in young French talent and immediately want them to start playing as well as they had been across the channel. The environment's different. The Premier League is arguably the best in the world, but it's also the most physical. Chelsea have more home players in their starting squad most days than Arsenal do in a year! Cole, Cole, Lampard and Terry start or are subs in most games. I count Walcott in Arsenal's squad, and that's only when he's fit. Any other home players in their squad are either out on loan, or dropped in favour of foreigners. Personally, I can't wait for UEFA, FIFA or the Premier League to bring in a rule that mandates a minimum number of starting "home" players, subject to injury of course. Something like 3-5 home players would be an acceptable number for certainly the top 4, and definitely possible for the rest of the Premier League. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Arsenal have had a record of good English players, currently we have Walcott and Wilshere. Both promising players. Pennant never turned out as good as we hoped while Ashley Cole moved to Chelsea. I don't really care about the nationality of our players though, Wenger doesn't have a policy of not using English players it's just the ones he does have tend to be from abroad.
I think Wenger has a sensible policy in his attitude to players as well since he tends to buy young, and rarely spends large amounts of cash on players. Yet he still has a very good team constructed from sensible purchases. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Anybody fancy a game of "spot the shot on target"?
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Robbed by the ref
Well done Everton anyway, if anyone deserves a trophy it's Moyes for what he's done for that club. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Tevez and Scholes not used for pens.
On second thoughts, why use them, when you have a couple of prolific centre halves. :dozey: |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Well, if you are going to lose a cup semi then its not to bad if it is against another Lancashire side.
Should never have gone to extra time, Old Mother Riley  cocked it up again, a definite penalty denied United in normal time. Still its good to see the kids competing on an equal footing with a side near the top of the Premiership. Now for the two that matter. http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/module.../icon_wink.gif Jim. |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Definite penalty is overstating your case slightly. I did think penalty but it certainly could be debatable...
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Please could someone tell berbatov that the idea of taking a penalty is to put the ball in the net and NOT PASS IT STRAIGHT TO THE KEEPER :grind:
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
I thought we'd lost it once it went to penalties if am honest. Especially after Cahill missed the first one.
|
Re: Football : Season 08/09
to be honest how many shots on target or even shots of target did we create in the whole match. Hardly any and that is why we lost.
Didn't really think it was a pen more a coming together. it was hardly like he came steaming in and was only going for the player |
Re: Football : Season 08/09
Unlucky I thought, best team over 90+ET. Considering who was missing, they played some great stuff at times. It was a Pen, no doubt about it, didn't get the ball, clipped Danny. If Riley bottled it due to recent comments, very poor, if he honestly didn't think it was, you win some you loose some.
I mean Fergie can get at it at times, saying he wants a strong ref, not sure he has ever outright accused a ref of supporting a team though, bit out of order, and a bit out of character for Moyes, usually keeps his gob shut. I sill like him though, not sure Everton will win it from what I saw today, but you never know, sometimes your name is just on it. And as to why we sent Ferdinand and Vidic up rather than Anderson/Tevez/DaSilva, all compitent Pen takers? Who knows. All I can think is that he didn't want the weight of a miss on a kid? So they stepped up. Still should have started with Tevez n Anderson, especially when Cahill missed. Oh, and next season, Cahill to UTD as a replacement for Scholes, fine player. |
