According to what I just found out the iphone no longer appears as a disk but as a digital device such as a scanner.

Click Start, then Devices and printers, and your iphone should appear there.

if not then try here - http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/14580/Tra...s-to-Windows-7

See that's the thing - the icon has gone. IT was there and now no luck.

I've been fiddling and now the pc won't recognise the iPhone at all. whoops :(

Too much of that will stunt your growth.
The other suggestion was to connect the iphone with itunes closed.

Yes indeed - it just looks for drivers tries to install, then fails.

Try updating your version of iTunes...or remove and re-install your current version :)

dilli-theclaw 11-03-2010 16:10

Re: The iPhone thread

Reinstalling iTunes (which was the current version) - Has the phoe working again ;) - IE it can sync no problems but STILL doesn't show up in windows explorer.

All very odd.

haydnwalker 11-03-2010 16:13

Re: The iPhone thread

My iPhone has never shown up in Windows Explorer.... It has always been seen via iTunes though. Then I moved to Mac so its no longer an issue for me but I just thought it was how apple "designed" it.

dilli-theclaw 11-03-2010 16:18

Re: The iPhone thread

Yup usually it shows up in explorer and also pops up with an option to open a window so i can drag and drop my photo's off it.

But I can't do that now.

Lord Nikon 11-03-2010 16:23

Does it show up as an imaging source in Devices and printers?

Well that's odd. I found a third party browser program so I could access the picture folder on the phone directly - deleted all the photos in it and it seems to have cleared up the problem. Maybe it was a corrupt photo or something. Thanks for everyone's help :)

Does anyone else have issues with orange 3G?

At times its really slow and the last couple of days whilst at work I have had little to no signal. (usually I get 3G and full "bars")

I asked orange and there are no outages in the area...

I was in and around Stockport all weekend. Didn't have any problems with 3G signal. I should add I was on a HTC Desire though.

Not strictly speaking iphone news this, but it seems that Steve Jobs's "And Another thing" section at the World Wide Developers conference on the 7th June might actually be......

Steve Balmer!

Yep, it's rumoured that the Microsoft CEO might just be there to announce that Visual Studio 2010 will compile native OSX and iPhone apps..

I think he'll be there to announce that Bing Search and Bing Maps will be the default on iPhone, a shot back at Google from Apple. Makes sense. Microsoft will be keen to push Search and Apple want to knock back Google a bit since Android is really having a good go at iPhone now (Especially considering the Android 2.2 keynote where they were they stopped just short of calling Apple evil).

I don't see the Visual Studio thing...Makes sense to have a Windows Development Environment for iPhone but OSX applications? Really? Seems a bit far fetched too me (I however love Visual Studio and .Net so would welcome it).

Pfft! No bloody way I'm paying £350 for it!!

I reckon it'll be about the same over here as the current 3GS, the 3GS obviously dropping in price massively. O2 have offered me an upgrade to a 3GS for £89 - cash price £420 something? - so I'm hoping it'll be not too much more than £100 to keep my custom, tied into another 18 month contract at £35 a month... any more than that and I'm jumping ship - currently down to £20 a month, so they'll be getting £370 extra out of me in total... sounds about quids in for their part.

Nope, am totally happy with my HTC Desire.

Also O2 have hinted on their twitter that existing iPhone customers may be able to upgrade early with a special offer. No more details at present though.

How to upgrade to iPhone 4

Customers currently eligible for an upgrade can easily upgrade online or in an O2 shop, when the phone goes on sale on the 24th of June 2010.

However, even if you're currently in the middle of your minimum term there are a number of options to get your hands on one.

Option 1: Early Upgrade Offer, valid from 24 June to 24 July 2010.

You can pay a reduced one-off charge and upgrade straight away to an iPhone 4. To find out more about your charge and the rules have a look our Early Upgrade Offer.

Option 2: Buy the iPhone 4 on Pay & Go.

If you don't want to upgrade to a new iPhone on a Pay Monthly contract, you can buy an iPhone 4 on Pay & Go. Remember you'll need to continue to pay for your existing Pay Monthly contract.

Pay Monthly customers with O2 Insure can move their new Pay & Go iPhone onto their existing O2 Insure policy. Just give us a call within the first 3 days of purchase to let us know.

Option 3: Wait until you're eligible for an upgrade.

All Pay Monthly O2 customers are part of O2 Priority List and everyone has an opportunity to upgrade early. Have a look at the table below to see how soon you will be eligible for an upgrade.

If you're a Platinum customer... get a 6 month early upgrade
If you're a Gold customer... get a 3 month early upgrade
If you're a Silver or Blue customer... get a 1 month early upgrade

If you don't already know your Priority List tier you'll be able to find out from mid-day 10 June by texting DATE to 21302.

Terms apply. Get more information on O2 Priority List .

Switching to a micro sim

No matter how you choose to upgrade to iPhone 4, you'll need to change your current sim to a micro sim. We'll have more information about this soon.

Pay & Go customers upgrading to iPhone 4

If you're already on Pay & Go with O2 and buying the iPhone 4, you'll need to transfer your existing O2 number, balance and tariff onto a new micro sim. We'll have some more information on how to do this soon.

Here's the offer:

Instead of paying off your remaining contract in full, simply pay a one-off charge equal to £20 for each full month left on your contract. This reduced cost offer cannot be combined with any early upgrade eligibility you may have as part of O2 Priority List.

Simply enter your contract renewal date below and we'll estimate how much your early upgrade charge will be.

If you don't already know your contract renewal date you will be able to find it out from mid-day on Thursday 10 June by texting DATE to 21302.

Just make sure you sell it *before*, otherwise the price is liable to drop...

[Average recycle price for a 3G last year was £200 after the 3GS was released]

MoneySavingExpert.com has a site specifically for finding mobile recycling deals:

http://mobilevaluer.com/

Whack your phone in, & it finds all the offers for you.

Current highest for a 16GB 3GS is £260.

http://mobilevaluer.com/working/apple_3g-s-16gb

--------------

When I bought my 3GS last year, I did so before then selling my 3G via Mazuma.

I plan on selling it beforehand this time, & using Mrs D's crappy old spare Nokia (currently used only for Orange Weds) as a temp phone in the period between.

How so?

If you're in an iPhone contract, then not only did you sign a contract for a specified length of time, but your actual iPhone was heavily subsidised... So why should O2 let people off early for free?

As the cheapest Pay Monthly iPhone contract with O2 is £30/month, O2 could have just said "you pay us £30 x however many months you have left" & left it at that, but they didn't: they have offered to let people pay £20 for each remaining month instead.

jrhnewark 10-06-2010 09:35

Re: The iPhone thread

I'm not saying that £20 a month isn't very generous(!), but how many people is that really ripping off? They'd be better off locking people into 24 month contracts - a bit more cash for O2, more people restarting their contracts...[COLOR="Silver"]

this is what I don't like about the iphone. Just because it is a popular phone they move you onto really bad contracts that offer less than what I had before I changed.

No, But from what I understand you'll need to upgrade to one of these contracts upon completion.

Thats my new contract started it last week. The iphone contracts have always been poorer than other smart phones. Ive just come off a contract giving me 800 minutes unlimited texts and loyalty net for £31 which gave me the Omnia 18 months ago.

Yeah you got the new contract in time. These tariffs come into force on the 24th of June, the day of the new iPhone, but they apply across the entire network as far as I can tell.

http://blog.o2.co.uk/home/2010/06/of...bile-data.html

Quote:

So from June, O2 will pioneer a simple but important change to our billing structure, in which we will begin to ask our heaviest data users to pay more for using large amounts of data. The vast majority of our users will be completely unaffected by the changes – 97% of our smartphone customers currently use less than 500MB of data every month.
So the iPhone doesn't have a special tariff anymore. It's in a smart phone bracket along with the rest. You will keep your contact until it expires though.

Re: The iPhone thread

I think O2's new "smartphone tariffs" suck, & not just because of the loss of "Unlimited Data".

I always thought the previous "iPhone tariffs" were a bit tight compared to normal tariffs, but these new ones are worse.

For £35/month, on my 18 month contract which started in January 2009, I get:

Minutes: 600

Messages: 500 (with the ability to use 4 inclusive messages to send 1 MMS or 1 roaming SMS)

Data: Unlimited

International Traveller Service (ITS): Free

Under the new tariffs, £35 would get me:

Minutes: 300

Messages: Unlimited SMS (with MMS & roaming SMS charged separately)

Data: 500MB

ITS: Nope.

Meh. I'm more & more tempted now to buy PAYG & get a Simplicity SIM, or (depending on their tariffs) go with Orange or 3 instead.

The £35 plan is similar to my current O2 contract.

Orange are apparently following O2 though & ditching unlimited data... I just hope that they don't also slash everything else like O2 has.

---------- Post added at 15:44 ---------- Previous post was at 15:42 ----------

Doesn't look like anyone else is going to reveal tariffs until Tuesday I think, & I doubt we'll have the handset prices before then either.

Annoying. I want time to look at tariffs & prices *before* the pre-orders open.

Hutchison 3G (3 UK) will carry Iphone 4

3 UK will carry the Iphone 4 which is due to be released on O2,Vodafone and Orange.

There is a registration form to be notified of its release on the 3 website. Just go to www.three.co.uk

The good question is, will the Iphone 4 be sold under the T-Mobile brand and will it ever reach Virgin Mobile?!

Im gonna stick with my £20 600mins/1200text/unlimited data tariff.
I'll just buy the iPhone 4 outright.

Gig of mobile data as standard, prices seem pretty much as the 3GS was.

the £35 a month tarrif seems ok and its not a huge outlay on the phone seems competitive for what it is and it will be attractive against 500 meg plans

Im going to try and get a 16 GB 3GS whilst I still can. I don't really use my phone for anything but internet and I'm on PAYG which makes it quite expensive.

If you want to keep your current contract, yet shift it to an iPhone 4, you'll need a microSIM.

Would O2 transfer you to a microSIM without you getting a new contract?

If not, then it may have to be a cutting job...

iPhone moan....

My first work iPhone was fine for about a year, then the battery started discharging quickly, and the iPhone kept rebooting itself.

Sent it back to O2 (as it was under the year), and got a replacement/refurb - the same problem occurred within a month.

On my second replacement/refurb (got it yesterday), and the battery is draining in 7 hours, with the only use being the power button being pressed (three times) to check the battery state.

If Apple aren't careful, I'll be keeping my temporary loan phone (HTC Desire running Android).

Im not too worried, i think i will end up cutting mine just to be sure they don't try and say i have moved onto another deal by taking a replacement sim!

Iphone 4 ORDERED!!!! roll on next week.

Tezcatlipoca 16-06-2010 02:45

Re: The iPhone thread

I pre-ordered a 16GB iPhone 4 at lunchtime via the Apple website, for Reserve & Collect at my local Apple Store.

I put down for SIM Free, but I may go Contract or PAYG depending on what the prices are when the idiot networks finally give us some actual INFORMATION.

So far, I think this launch is looking like a bit of a farce.

I can understand Apple not allowing the networks to offer pre-orders (if strict orders from Apple is in fact why they aren't), if Apple wants to ensure that it has enough stock to fulfil its own pre-orders, before letting the networks get anything.

But... Why the complete lack of any information? The *only* network to have released any tariff info so far is O2, yet they haven't released handset prices. And the other networks...as well as not releasing handset prices, they haven't even announced their tariffs!

Lame.

The only emails I had from O2 were a few rather pathetic emails from "Guru James" ( ) last week, which from what I can tell on other forums have been widely ridiculed (they really are quite awful). All I have heard from Orange is along the lines of "Coming soon! We'll keep you up to date!" Ditto for Vodafone. I don't think I've heard anything yet from Three.

I would have preferred to order online for delivery on the 24th, as that way I'd have been guaranteed to get one (rather than having one reserved at the store & hoping they don't let some other walk-in have it), but the only bloody way to do that is to buy one SIM free... which is something I don't know if I want to do until I know what all the various networks are offering for tariffs & handset prices...

Oh, & the Apple Website can no longer ship orders earlier than the 2nd of July, so that's the whole pre-order allocation gone in one day.

Still, I suppose one plus is that at least we are getting it the same time as the Yanks, unlike the stock shortage cockups that caused the iPad to be delayed in Europe.

I've been on contract with Vodafone for the past 3 years, my contract with them is up in November, and was going to upgrade from my trusty HTC Magic to the iPhone 4. But now my son has just told me about the new Dell Streak, and now I'm having second thoughts!

Orange seem to be very keen to tie people in for 24 months - I'm guessing the price of the handsets from Apple is more expensive this time 'round.

Yeah, Much worse than Vodafone's 'leaked' contracts.

Tezcatlipoca 16-06-2010 22:01

Re: The iPhone thread

Although the upfront handset prices are high on Orange, I think the tariffs themselves are better than O2's (e.g. for £35 on an 18 month contract, you get 600 minutes instead of O2's 300, and 750MB data instead of O2's 500MB).

Still no handset prices from O2, and still NOTHING AT ALL WHATSOEVER from T-Mobile, Three, & Vodafone.

I'm swaying towards an Orange contract at the moment.

I don't mind being tied to another contract... If I want to get iPhone 5 next year, I can do what I did last year for the 3GS & get one PAYG & then shove the v4 SIM in the v5 to see out the remainder of the contract.

Total cost of contract phone vs SIM free or PAYG phone seems fairly equivalent to me, with Orange (& presumably O2)... usual case of small lump upfront & high monthly cost versus big lump upfront & small monthly cost. SIM free may be £499, but if you take the £229 upfront cost of a £35 contract & add that to 18 months' worth of the difference* between a SIM only deal (£20) & a contract (£35) you get £229 + (18x£15) = £499.

*[I never understand why some people use 18 x the full monthly tariff when working out the total cost of the phone...that £35pcm is not just for the phone, it includes usage too... so surely a better indicator of your monthly contribution towards paying off the subsidy is to take the cost of the contract tariff minus the SIM free tariff]

Oh, & O2's "Guru James" has been replaced with "Guru Sarah".

Well, I got my 3gs the other day, £25 a month on the tariff I pasted, I'm rather satisfied. Probably more minutes and texts than I'll use, though the fact Ive paid for them might mean I do use them more, and that I don't have to mess around to text any more...

And since on the new scale Orange tariffs are £35 min which I'd probably not even entertain... I got somewhat in before the change.
