Re: [Merged] Snow!

We had a fairly intense hailstorm for about 10 minutes around 4pm, which alternated between ice balls and those snow pellets that look like the insides of a beanbag. Now it's turned to very heavy snow - one hour on and we have about an inch already.

Even so, it's not really very cold outside so I don't imagine it will lie for very long once it stops ... unless the skies clear and it freezes, which is what happened last night. I had to hack frozen snow off the windscreen this morning. :disturbd:

Re: [Merged] Snow!

I know this is the snow thread but I do feel the need to say it has been a lovely sunny, dry and out of the breeze quite warm day up here in Manchester. :)

Chris 05-03-2009 08:57

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Well, it snowed last night until about 8pm, then the skies cleared and it froze solid. Then it clouded over and snowed again. So as you can imagine we're pretty stuck here this morning ...

I was actually going to give it a go anyway and was out clearing the car (hacking away at the hailstones, still clinging to the windscreen under the snow) when the school phoned. There has been an accident that blocked the road. As it's the only road, that means we really are stuck!

Apparently the snow line is only about half a mile from here. We're a fair way uphill but the road drops steeply almost to sea level. Beyond that there's next to nothing - school was having a hard time believing anyone up this end really was snowed in until they got a phone call from the bus driver.

There's an incredible storm here at the moment - and, yes, there is hail in it!

joglynne 18-06-2009 21:39

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Ah that's what it was. I just caught sight a flash of light out of the corner of my eye and thought I was imagining things. Considering the black clouds coming from your direction it looks like the storms on it's way over to me.

Oh boy!!!!!! the whole sky out side my window just keeps lighting up, no actual spikes of lightning just the whole sky flashing white and the clouds are racing towards me like the clappers. This is interesting.......she says from behind the settee.

ooh hail i thought you ment snow, it might pass over st helens

joglynne 18-06-2009 22:06

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Well that was spectacular. The wind, really got up as the lightning went over head but we have only had a light shower and no snow or hail.

The black clouds are heading over to Chorlton-***-Hardy now so I guess they will be next to get the light show.

Same as last year, this is Beinn Narnain. We first saw snow on top of it about 10 days ago but that was gone in about 8 hours. I have no idea whether it has lasted longer than that today as the clouds have descended.

It was difficult to capture this picture it as the sky behind the mountain was very bright. This has been photoshopped to death, hopefully you get the idea. :D

Just been into town for a crafty pub lunch. Walking through the snow seemed like a good idea until the wind started to blow it horizontally at my face...

Coming down heavier now and in bigger flakes but still <insert expletive of choice here> cold and very blustery.

I've got the powdery type of snow which is dangerous - doesn't melt and turns rock hard as it settles, driving conditions are going to be great (lots of traffic. I'd guess about <10mph).

Well it took me the usual time to get to work, the motorway was clear even though the BBC said only 1 lane was open.

I got he and one was here, luckily a keyholder turned up and let us in, 1 hr later only 2 manager turned up, so we might do our party early then bugger off.

When I do I'll drive off and never look back.

had a light dusting in newcastle with a new front moving down from the arctic..apparently ..according to the beeb ,so the RAC were on telling people not to travel and if they did take a warm flask, a change of clothes, and a shovel also a survival book by bear grills a pack of huskies and a couple of Eskimo's to build a igloo

My god if a couple of inches of snow can bring this country to a standstill then what hope have we got ,people in Norway and Switzerland must be cracking up with laughing at us

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Don't forget we don't get heavy snow very often.

Countries like Switzerland and scandinavian countries get it all the time so they have invested in clearing it.

It pointless for us to spend millions on equipment thats going to spend the best part of 360 days a year doing nothing.

As Billy Connolly says, "there no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing."

granted but do we really have to have all the hysteria by the media surely the 4-5 reporters the beeb employed on "snow watch" this morning could have been better used on stories that matter

We have snow on ice which is again freezing. Very treacherous under foot and on side roads. I was quite scared driving this morning and it would take a lot to pursuade me to go out there again tonight.
