That's probably because most of On Demand is still currently on the system that doesn't support UHD nor has the capacity for it.

Virgin have started to move content over to the new system, and that started with Sky Cinema On Demand (which is why all the HD for Sky Cinema came back)

Maybe the Virgin Exclusives will become Virgin UHD Exclusives on demand?

Perhaps in the future but certainly not currently for the reasons that have just been explained by Ben..

Yes, understood, but Virgin's UHD channel is also available to viewers who can get only HD. So is there a technical reason why the downscaled version of Virgin's UHD channel cannot be shown on demand?

...because it’s broadcast in UHD and downscaled in the V6 for customers who don’t have a 4K TV?

Yes, that's what I mean. If some viewers are watching the channel in HD rather than UHD, is it not possible to provide channell 999's content in HD on demand until the system is upgraded?

OB it's the V6 that is downscaling it, it's not a separate stream, it is coming into every Full House home as UHD, the V6 then goes "I'm not connected to a 4K TV, I'll only show a quarter of the pixels." The OD infrastructure at the back end isn't configured in its entirety to work with UHD yet, neither is there enough of it to fit it in, but it is being worked on, hence the Sky Cinema OD comment.

At least that is how I understand it.

I doubt I would have twigged, I rarely see adverts that are obviously from Scottish companies on C4...though most of my C4 consumption these days is either on on-demand or via the HD channel and that would've been London version prior to your information. Thanks though.

I don't know why Channel 4 bother with regional advertising, surely there isn't enough to make it worthwhile. And it's not like they have regional schedule differences.

Actually, now I think of it I saw a Scottish Water advert on All4 the other day.
Huh. :-D

Viacom scrapped channel 5's five advertising regions in August 2015, stating they were unviable. Obviously Channel 4 think it is still worthwhile to operate this way.

Re: Virgin Media Changelog

I noticed just now that NHK World (625) has changed packs on Virgin Media's website table. I have checked and I can now receive this HD channel. It was the last of the News section that wasn't available to everyone.

The website suggests it's now available on Player tier, previously it was on Full House only. Can someone check it's on Player.

I also get the impression more channels have been added to Player tier, but since I'm on a higher pack I can't be sure.

This is the VM page with the table, though it does seem to have some errors, unless it was glitching for me. https://www.virginmedia.com/shop/bun...tvlistings-top

cheekyangus 30-04-2019 09:45

Re: Virgin Media Changelog

I had another quick look this morning. I compared the table on the link above with the PDF of April's channel list.

I can't test this one myself, unlike NHK World, as I was already receiving it, but it appears Film4+1 has been moved down to Player.

Given Film4+1 is freely available on Freeview and FreeSat this change is long overdue.

I've not spotted any other pack changes so far.

-----
Oh, and I was slightly wrong about NHK World being the last of the News section not available to everyone (prior to the change yesterday), Sky News HD is now the sole News section channel not available to every pack.

Re: Virgin Media Changelog

Another update. This is a quote from JJ20x's post on ForumBox (thanks to Horizon for the head's up on the Pick'n'Mix thread).

Quote:

Channels not initially assigned to a new tier and not in the Player or "FTA" tiers:

Blaze, Film4 +1, Food Network, God Channel, More 4 +1 & Travel Channel - all of these were added to the Player Pack
I've had a look at the two sources I have access to (different than what JJ20x was using to be clear). Someone on the Player tier will need to confirm these changes, though the new VM channel list PDF for May should be out soon, but they are showing on the Player tier on the VM website now, whereas the last VM channel list PDF from the start of April I have has them all on different tiers. The VM website table showing it turned out to be true for NHK World so I have no reason to doubt these channels being available to more tiers.

Additional: Had a closer read of JJ20x's post and found some more. I'll check these against the VM website. Checked, and seem fine.

Quote:

International news channels:

Al Jazeera English, Bloomberg HD, euronews, France 24 (French) HD, France 24 English HD, NDTV 24x7, NHK World-Japan - all of these were added to the Player Pack.
And...

Quote:

&TV, HUM EUROPE, Islam Channel English, Islam Channel Urdu, Al Jazeera Arabic & NDTV India - these were added to the Player Pack
And yet more...

Quote:

Asian/Bollywood music channels:

B4U Music, Brit Asia TV & Zing - all of these were added to the Player Pack.
That makes 22 additions to Player tier this week now, I think.

Many thanks JJ20x.

I can confirm Lifetime HD, Crime+Inv HD, History HD and History 2 HD have today replaced their SD versions on their respective channel numbers on the EPG.

As a lower tier customer I can also confirm that Lifetime HD and History 2 HD have moved down a tier rather than the lower tiers lose access to them.

cheekyangus 16-05-2019 11:56

Re: Virgin Media Changelog

As garethf1927 said on another thread, the day after the A&E channel HD swaps, the Crime+Inv HD moved (yet again) from 222 to 209 (alongside Lifetime HD) and Crime+Inv+1 has moved from 224 to 222.

So after all that upheaval the A&E channels are now numbered as follows:

Lifetime HD is on 208
Crime + Investigation HD is on 209
Crime + Investigation +1 is on 222
HISTORY HD is on 270
HISTORY +1 is on 271
HISTORY 2 HD is on 273

It has been a hidden feature for quite some time. It wasn't as smoothly implemented to change channel as the Press Blue for HD, so they haven't put the prompt on-screen until now. Thanks for the heads-up.

No, it most certainly didn't. However, I do believe that as a self-defined aggregator of content, Virgin should have left it on there for those that want it on a subscription only basis.

Unless, of course, Virgin define their valued top end customers as those seeking only quality content!

Hoping that Disney + will be replacing Hayu soon, but still my boat will not be rocking as my kids are adults now!!

I should imagine that when there is a local news or programme, a single region has to be picked for everywhere. Might as well be London. If you're in Scotland, what English region should it be? BBC1 for Scotland is already there on 101 and 108 and 862. Only England has that level of regionalisation.

id like to be able to see all the other regional channels to be honest. i get north west bbc but would like to see other regional broadcasts. bbc london would just be like the national news since the 6pm news is pretty much everything what happened in london anyway

A constant source of irritation to those of us living in London is that the lunchtime local news is only broadcast in SD. If you are watching the national news in HD then it means changing channels to watch the news from the city. I know it's only a few button presses but as far as I am aware the other UK regions do not have to do this.

We have exactly the same problem down here as its the main news in HD and then one has to swap channels for the regional news in SD.

At least with local ITV News in HD it broadcasts something. EG Around here you get Meridian(south east) HD news in an Anglia region. SD version is Anglia news.

And this in itself leads to constant complaints. “Why am I getting the wrong region”, when people automatically go to the HD version instead of SD. Also there are more HD regions on satellite than cable, so people switching from Sky/Freesat also complain to Virgin & Freeview.

For instance Sky/Freesat customers get Anglia East HD in the whole Anglia region. So in the West part of the region you get Anglia West in SD but Anglia East in HD. On Cable & Freeview you get Meridian SE in HD in the whole region.

Yes, they do have to. There is no switching capability of the HD circuits on the BBC1 HD network in England. Scotland, Wales & NI are totally seperate feeds.

ITV has financed several additional HD feeds to provide opt outs & +1 loops, but only for main regions. The sub regions only have seperate SD feeds, & if sub region studios have been closed, as many have, then what you see on an SD sub region is usually recorded earlier & broadcast simultaneously to the live version on the HD channel.

You can watch any region you want on iPlayer. If you go into the settings menu you can change the region to any one you want. I have set the region of the iPlayer on my V6 to BBC Cambridge as we are on the boundary of the Anglia West & London regions. When the local news comes on I then have a choice of London on 101 or Cambridge through the iPlayer.

Sky are effectively forced to broadcast all regional programmes because they use a single UK-wide platform. VM doesn't have that restriction.

Not a question of Sky being “forced” to carry them. ITV is in charge of the slots it leases from SES, so can put up as many regions as they want. In fact ITV only pays Sky/Freesat for a single EPG slot for SD in each region, so unless you tune manually you only see the region (& EPG info) meant for your location in the UK. There were a couple of regions missing from satellite. The STV sub region for Dundee has only ever been available on Freeview & Cable, which I believe still exists. ITV Westcountry was also split into West & East versions in 2013, with only one available on satellite.

The BBC on the other hand is not a private concern, being licence fee funded. So their decision to take EPG slots for every region may be something to do with this. Regions on cable are tied down to cable franchise rules as originally set up by the Cable Authority. These prescribe what must be available in each franchise area.

I think you will find all the STV HD sub-regions are on Sky, albeit the one you mention is one of three of their HD regions that are not free to air, so aren't on Freesat.

The Tayside STV sub-region does indeed still exist.

ITV Hub App (finally) available in Scotland on VM for non-Channel 3 content.

---------- Post added at 21:31 ---------- Previous post was at 21:22 ----------

Note : This is for V6 (and probably original Tivo). No idea what situation is for app on TV360 in Scotland.

I just checked this morning, STV Player no longer has Channel 3 content. So both apps are the version available in rest of UK on VM by the look of it.

That explains it then - @CheekyAngus was referring to the fact that the ITV Hub had turned up on V6 boxes north of the border. It's still not on 360's here!

Well I'm now doubting if it is everywhere here, see my longer post just now on Changes to Virgin TV thread. As this is a Changelog thread I won't say more here.

If you navigate to APPS on the 360 and press OK a number of apps appear that were previously hidden, including ITV Hub.

Yep, but the ITV Hub is only available outside of Scotland (only the STV Player here!) See my photo earlier on in this thread. @cheekyangus had reported that the ITVHub had appeared on his V6 today but it seems that it didn't happen all over Scotland (possibly an error on VM's part in his area) and definitely not on the 360.

Anyway, straying off topic for this thread....

Your picture is only for "your Apps", not "All Apps". You have a lot more missing than just "ITV Hub", eg All 4, My5.
