Nah, I think it was being called a 'merger' rather than a 'takeover', and I'm not so sure that the deal is 100% complete yet, either. All the same, the Beeb were wrong - and not for the first time, either. :)

it's a takeover not a merger. dont let orangebird catch you calling it anything else!

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

i can recall ntl stating that they were commited to offering faster speeds than bt & higher caps, in which case they are going to be in a race to roll out 10mb to all their customers. After all this is the info from the register about bt, BT wholesales 8mb service is due to be up & running by spring 2006. As BT has a far lager network than any other telco then all excuses from anyone else about manpower etc are to some extent lame

that was before they realised poor services at "cheep" prices were mroe profitable.

Anyone with half a braincell knows it's a takeover, and not a merger - sadly. Good on orangebird - I got fed-up of using the word 'merger'. :)

Is that on NTL or on Telewest? Telewest are rolling out 10Mbs as we speak. AFIK NTL still have to start.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Just to let you guys know, just been in touch with NTL regards upgrading my 3mb to 10mb and the chap said that it is unlikely to happen until the end of next year, there trial about 750 people for a week now but it is doubtful that we would see an upgrade until mid next year, not sure if this is true but he did speak to his supervisor, I even threatened to leave NTL but this made no difference. I am in Manchester.

handyman 18-10-2005 13:01

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

I don't think 1 user threatening to leave is going to make much difference. Its in motion and ntl will be cracking on with things as best they can.

Whats the desparate need for speed?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Its not so much desperate but I am considering DSL because its cheaper and faster, I only threatened to see if that sparked the usual we dont want to lose you speech and i managed to get more info. just thought id let other people know because the general impression is that 3mb users will be upgraded by the end of this year which doesnt seem to be the case, sorry if ive upset anyone, i will keep quiet next time.

Your opinion is as important as everyone elses here, so don't keep quiet, ever!:)

From what I know, it will be the 3 meg users, who are paying more now, that will get the service first, then from january onwards, we'll see it rolled out slowly everywhere.:tu:

handyman 18-10-2005 13:22

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

3meg customers should get the 10mb service in december though you will be very lucky to get a csr to discuss this with you. I've been to ntl new product breifings and you get all the info but you also get a list of notes that you are allowed to tell customers which is very little.

ian@huth 18-10-2005 13:23

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

It could be the same as the last lot of broadband speed updates where customers could go online and upgrade themselves to the new speeds as soon as they were released thus avoiding the wait for the automatic speed upgrade.

mcmanic 18-10-2005 13:44

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

my letter said end of December automatically upgraded "there's nothing that you need to do", and 1st customers in the UK to be upgraded to 10mb service with usage allowance of 75gig (Brighton area).

I seem to be getting 8-10Mbps down & 240-480kbps up. The upstream seems to be varying a lot more than before, though.

So, is this the infamous upgrade?

I completely dissagree with the caps.....If you are going to have any cap at all then you may aswell get the lowest cap service, whether you have a 5GB a month cap or 75 GB a month cap its all the same. Im just gonna get the lowest cap service for the cheapest if they insist on putting the caps on.

The thing is, caps make sense if implemented correctly. By correct implementation, I mean that the hours of at least 1am-6am should be uncapped on all users' services.

Cant say i'm surprised really, give with one hand and take with the other, i'd sooner have less speed and not have to monitor usage at all.

Sky has bought easynet which provides a broadband service so i wonder if ntl will rethink the whole topic of caps and speeds.
Sky has obviously bought easynet to enable them tp provide competition to the "whole package" of broadband/tv/phone that they could not provide.

Could be an interesting time ahead.

I want higher download and upload speed with no small cap. I'd be happy with 24mb down and 2mb up uncapped for the same as what I'm paying now for the 3mb with NTL, or £24.99 even... Sound ridiculous? I think this will happen in 2006, and maybe even better deals, who knows? :D

I do, you won't see 2Mbit upload in 2006, nor will you see 24Mbit download without QoS or similar at that price, toooooo cheap :)

Actually they haven't bought them yet, they've made an offer which the board has approved but shareholders need to approve it first.

Though yeah, soon I'll probably be working for Sky :p:

Rone 21-10-2005 16:15

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Well i already have Sky and my only complaint ever; its not cheap, and if they do go into Broadband, you can bet it will be competitive, certainly at first.
And will they start streaming their programs through it?
This could totally alter broadband as we know it. They could of course, cock it up totally. ;)

Mines never ever gone off completely, as in its stopped receiving, neither analogue or digital.
Very rarely have i had to switch off the box because of a problem ie froze temporarily, and its only in force 10 gales can you see a bit of interference.
For the years i have been on it, never once have i had to ring up except for a package change, so if they could do the same for broadband...........:)

To be fair to NTL, if it wasnt for this stupid cap nonsense, they would still get my business everytime, the service is good [if you dont need overseas customer support] its always been ok speedwise, and reliability, and the e-mail has been fine since it got sorted. I cant complain about the price either.
But if i get any reduction of speed, even tho i try to watch what we all do, i'm off to the first "do as you like" BB provider, irrespective of cost, 3meg or above.

If only they read this forum.

i have been with sky from the start, but i did try ntl for a while for the tv. All i got to say is if the easynet deal goes through & sky approach that with the same commitment as they did the tv, then all the other isp's better wake up now & do something before its too late. Dare i mention itv when they quoted they were to big to be worried about sky (about 10 years ago)

what kind of speed is this?

I'm on the 3mb service and the only reason I looked on nthellworld today was because I had a download going at 1.0mb/s constantly...

Also my ntl modem rebooted itself the other day and required me to reset the routers before it worked again? could it be 10mb on the way?

1st 128K took 140 ms = 936229 Bytes/sec = approx 7789 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 125 ms = 1048576 Bytes/sec = approx 8724 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 141 ms = 929589 Bytes/sec = approx 7734 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 125 ms = 1048576 Bytes/sec = approx 8724 kbits/sec

It should be good quality sky have purchased an llu isp which doesnt restrict it to bt wholesale prices and packages.

I think this is a very good thing, before ukonline was probably not given respect by ntl as a competitor hence no reflection on cap level's set, but if sky become the new owner it will be given respect and assuming sky dont drop the cap level's their is now a fair chance ntl will raise the 75gig cap to a 3 figure number to compete better.

Couldn't agree more, having 3 major competitors in broadband can only mean good news for us. (Not saying AOL and Wanadoo arn't major competitors, just not on the same scale as BT, NTL/Telewest and BSkyB in this country)

Maybe it's because we're the only bit of Hertfordshire left to not get VOD? Karma!

So people have been upgraded?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

I've seen a few claims, on various forums, not sure if anyone actually has got it yet though. There's been many email problems recently, past 2-3 days, i'm finding it very difficult to connect to the email servers, so maybe things are being readied for the upgrade?
I think if it was happening, there'd be a lot more than the 'few' i've seen posting, screaming from the rooftops about their new speeds.

Any one think this is the 10meg upgrade ?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Might just be an improvement to your area and not a speed upgrade.
But keep your fingers crossed as you never know :P

Systems UpgradeFrom 8.00pm Thurs 11th November - Thurs 18th November we will be making improvements to our services and systems.

During this time you will be unable to make changes to your Internet Service, however existing customers will be able to send and recieve emails, surf the web and upload to your webspace. Our Internet Support centres will have limited acces to their systems during this period. Normal service will be restored on the morning of Thurs 18th November. As an alternative to calling Technical Support, why not utilise ntl's new Broadband Medic online diagnostic and repair tool, available at www.ntlworld.com/help/broadbandmedic this tool will have limited functionality during the upgrade period.

It could be the upgrade. However, that is the same message that NTL post when they are upgrading their billing systems (and they *are* gradually rolling out a new billing system, called "harmony", across the country).

your wrong, the upload speed for 10meg shud b around 100Kb/s bcoz 3meg upload speed is 35Kb/s but i dont think NTL will increase the upload well lets see.

512Kb/s connection is 60Kb/s down 7Kb/s up
