Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

funnily enough I do get over it and in this particular case I did, but then VM went and had to bring it back to life by telling everyone that their current modem is now okay for 100mbit and they have already been upgraded. They are the ones exacerbating the issue not me.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Huh? Their SH is now okay for 100MB. That's good isn't it? So what's the problem?

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

I am confused as well because I thought we were talking about my sig and the reference to the fact that they allegedly tested the vmng300 and said it couldnt do 100mbit (even though many of us were using it and knew it could) and then a couple of weeks ago they turned around and told everyone that th vmng300 was fine and they had been auto upgraded to 100mbit.

carlwaring 07-08-2012 19:29

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Then your sig is now irrelevant and can be changed. Right? :

And your comment is rather silly because of course these things will be tested. (Trying to remember a saying about how technology can be
lab-tested to bits but it might still not survive the 'real world'. Basically, no tech is perfect!)

Or did they admit that they hadn't actually tested it at all?

have customers using old cloneable modems been given a SH?

I have heard a rumor that the upload speeds would be tripling, now im not sure if that's triple the 10:1 ratio or triple the 20:1 ratio. I would assume its triple the 20:1 to put them nearly inline with fttc?

Has anybody else heard this?

General Maximus 08-08-2012 07:02

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

no way dude. It is a big enough effort just to double the upload speed, there is no way they are going to triple it.

carlwaring 08-08-2012 07:40

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

And exactly how much more would be involved, GM?

General Maximus 08-08-2012 07:55

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

adding a bucket load more capacity which they currently dont have and bonding more channels. As seeming as though they havent been able to do the upstream doubling in line with the downstream doubling means that it is going to take them yonks to sort out tripling, especially if they are movng on with 200mbit and 400mbit which have been in the media recently

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Insufficient capacity has never stopped them selling products they cannot supply.

The most recent being the upgrade to 20meg on the old docsis 1 network. IIRC I didn't start to recieve 20meg for years, only when I was moved to docsis 3 did I start to get over 10 - 12 meg.

So tripling the upstream? Well why not? I think VM are getting desperate enough to offer it but that don't mean anyone will actually recieve it.

It will just join the "coming soon" queue along with upload speed doubling or the "Myth" queue alongside gems like "unlimited", "best for gaming" and "best wi-fi coverage.

And yet their own figures show that >60% of their customers get the headline speed. (Will try and find supporting link. Lost it right now.). Also....

So I think your statement generally might be incorrect. Though of course we know they have some problem areas :)

Are they the same people who tested my VMNG300 and said it couldnt do 100mbit and the same people who think the wireless performance on the shub is "unbeatable"?

No - it was SamKnows...

Typical speeds are recorded with a standard ethernet cable.

This is the speed that at least 66% of our customers get on average in a particular month on a particular product. Our typical speed tests run over 24 hours and speeds may vary at peak times.

The data comes from a broadband measurement panel made up of real Virgin Media customers spread out across our network. Powered by SamKnows, the broadband performance monitoring specialists, we run millions of tests a month to understand how our broadband is performing.
