Do you think that is the downfall? The old "Heart on your sleeve" issue. Not sure Shearer is management material, I think Newcastle need a proper manager, someone with experience. Reminds me of UTD after Ron was boss, Ferguson had to scrap everything, and rebuild it, and I mean EVERYTHING, that's what Newcastle need, a Ferguson or a Wenger.

Not really the manager i was refering to, allthough i don`t think old Al is management material tactics wise. Since the whole Mike Ashley cockney barrow boy crew took charge everything seems to have gone to pot...

I also think Newcastle fans think they have a divine right to be a top club just because they have a huge fan base. We all know that`s not the case.
Wonder who the next "night in shining armour" will be?

My money`s on the dream team of Shearer, Hanson and Lineker :knock:

I agree, Ashley had a perfectly good manager in Allardyce who could have turned them around but impatience forced him out, he wouldn't have got them relegated though.

Keegan coming back was a joke, the guy did nothing much in his first spell apart from spending money, and did nothing at Fulham or England another manager could have, and then repeated his cheque book at Man City... been out of the game for ages, but brought back to put smiles on the faces of fans, until he was exposed as crap again... that said, the board didn't help bringing in Wise (who has done what?) to oversee transfers and buying players the manager doesn't want.

No-one would work in that situation so Kinnear was probably the only choice to take it on - on paper a good appointment, did well with Wimbledon although that was long in the past, got Luton promotion and survived relegation in his first season with Forest, experienced head who keeps it simple and stabilises things - not a long term thing but fine as a caretaker. Personally I think had Kinnear not been taken ill then they would have stayed up, they were 13th after the WBA game. Hughton had no experience and Calderwood was new to the Championship - and was sacked for being in the relegation zone with us, having taken two attempts to get promotion, and having never managed in the Premiership - clearly only appointed because of his connections with Hughton and Wise. Shearer was a gamble - the hope that a total novice would lift the place enough to get momentum... In the end, Calderwood contributed to one relegation and but for Billy Davies, would have been two.

Be quite funny to see the pundits get it though, after they always go on about tactics and how the managers get it wrong.

Only Kinnear would have kept them up on PPG basis. Derby got 11 points last season, H/C were almost as bad.

13 points from 17 under Ince, they finished on 41 from 38, 28 pts from 21 games - 1.33 per game, 61 for a season, which would put them 7th.

Gotta agree with every point you made there, Kinnear would most likely have kept them up even if it was only just.
The whole Mr Curly coming back was just a complete waste of time(keep the fans happy..!) and lost points on the board, something Newcastle desperatly needed.

On a differant subject, who does everyone think is manager of the year?

IMO there are 3 candidates...

1- Alex ferguson. If Man U go on to win the european cup it`s hard to argue against.
2-David Moyes. Done an absolutely fantastic job at Everton with limited resources, plus bringing players in from the academy and buying others at good value. Allways seems to get the best out of his players and elevates the club to a position which amazes.
3-Roy Hodgson. Again like David Moyes, has that ability to forge a team which isn`t that great on paper and move them to a level which seems beyond the squad. Also the style of football Fulham have played this year has been a joy to watch, that giant of a defender hangaland(probably spelt wrong) and the striker nevland look top notch.
Glad Dickson Etuhu is playing well also (here`s hoping his brother gets a chance)

Moyes spent £15m on 1 player. A club record. Prior to that, he spent £11m on 1 player, the previous club record. Hardly limited resources, is it?
