Why are people defending VM's HD offering by suggesting that atleast they have brought some channels and that they are popular to a lot of people!? Err no. They really aren't.
The priority channels are clearly things like:

Terrestrial 1 - 5 and associated channels
Eurosport 1
Eurosport 2
Discovery HD channels

Even some music/film/sky 1 - 3 channels/bravo etc would have been better than the tripe they are getting first. I agree it is embarrasing and should have waited until they had atleast ONE decent channel to headline them with.

I'm off to get excited about watching the food channel in HD. Yay.

Well Terrestrial 1 & 2 are covered by BBC HD, and MTV HD is one of the channels being added so music is also covered. VM also have a lot of HD movies now available on Demand. The viewing figures on Bravo are a lot lower than Living for a start so there isn't any point in a HD version of that channel right now.

I personally watch a lot of stuff on Nat Geo so to get it in HD now will make it even better. Same goes for FX and Living. Its a great start and once VM get a few more then hopefully Ofcom will have sorted out Sky's hold on their HD channels and we'll get them too.

I wouldn't be surprised if Eurosport HD is one of the channels they are trying to get.

No, YOUR priority channels are them.

Eurosport 1 has a mere 0.2% viewing share, Eurosport 1 has 0.1%, Discovery has 0.2% as well.

Both Living an FX have more than these, and even Good Food manages to get 0.2%.

But yes, they should have gone with your list which is clearly of more popular channels, even though the BARB figures for viewing share completely disagrees with you.

I can barely refer to MTV as a music channel these days though. Everytime I turn it on it's full of tat that is nothing to do with music.

You can read stats and stats all day at what channels have the most viewers. I don't care for such statistics. What matters are that the channels that would truely benefit from HD are prioritised. i.e. especially sport.

Well there only 1 sport channel outside of sky sports in hd eurosport hd there no eurosport 1 and 2 hd, espn hd isnt launched yet so it coudl still come in time or jsut a little bit into the start of the seasonm. Only itv and ch4 hd are the missing terristal chanslle five dnt have one maybe a bit of research before you saying channels oyu want might be best, as oyu will find that it sort of covered on virgin either now with channels or vod. but i will give you sports is NOT COVERED IN HD ON VIRGIN yet

This is one of the quotes that stand out for me in the press release :

Neil Berkett, chief executive officer of Virgin Media, said: "As more homes become HD-ready, the launch of four new HD channels marks the next stage in the evolution of our pioneering TV service. Our line-up of HD channels and hugely popular on demand content is a unique and winning combination and we'll continue to bring more sport, films, entertainment and documentaries to our customers."

But also in reply to media boys post earlier:

virginmedia: @Inaba_kun No subscription bolt-on, however there will be some more HD channels we'll be announcing which will be available to M & L too.

These could be the eurosport hd , bio hd and also history hd and who know there could also be 4hd and also itv hd?

National Geographic is easily on par with (if not better than) Discovery and even though I don't watch Living it is one of the most popular digital channels - decent headliner in my opinion. I agree that Eurosport HD would be good (even though I don't watch it) as a HD sport channel would appeal to many. Good that Virgin aren't charging extra for these channels.

In theory it should launch at the end of July 2009, in practice it could be a few days, weeks or months later. Its to get us even more excited than we already are, I also think VM will double their HD content by adding the famous +1 channels, Pheew that could be 8.

In answre to bOOthers, the extract below is taken from http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...n-i-watch.html

Coming soon in HD

From the end of July you'll be able to watch FX, National Geographic and MTV in glorious HD. And they'll be joined soon after by LIVING, available to viewers in HD for the first time.

I think in all my time on this forum, which is about a month or so now, I have mentioned the facepalm emote four times. The only times I have mentioned it has been in response to posts which say the same things over again, 'VM are useless', 'those HD channels are rubbish!' etc.

Just because I've made a few joke posts does not make me childish, they should be taken for what they are, jokes. If you look past these few posts you refer to, I feel I've added as much to this forum as you or anyone else.

You've certainly made us all aware that such a thing as a facepalm emote exists, and also that we've got one. ;):D
