installing a software firewall is only good if configured right.

for example it may be set to allow all outbound to port 80, so if HIPS is disabled then a trojan could freely communicate on port 80, or even with HIPS it could mask itself and fool the operator.

Its possible to install protection that detects md5 changes etc. and asks about new executables been started but isnt a firewall so no performance hit.

Since we got a router and now have 3 pc's and a laptop on our network i havent botherd with a software firewall if i did some how get a trojan im sure Symantec Antivirus would pick it up or even windows defender... unless your the only pc directly connected to the net i find firewalls to be a big pain at times.

Getting fed up with the fall in download speeds from 3.75MB initially after the upgrade to 2.4/2.5MB, I rang technical support and was told that the system was undergoing tests that should be completed by the end of the week when full speeds should restored. Not being wholely convinced I rang customer services the next day. They said they had not heard any such story, but did say that there had been many complaints from people who were only getting a fraction of the promised 4MB. She offered to downgrade me to 1MB, which I accepted. Better to receive what one pays for (however modest) than to pay for something that is simply not being delivered.

Thats a dangerous assumption. Bet your system 'is' affected.

So's yours. No reason why someone who's adept enough shouldn't be able to keep nasty things at bay. I stress 'adept enough'. I haven't had AV for years - I just know what I'm doing.

And we're off-topic.

I know its not since all my PC's work fine, no slow down, no unusual processes in task manager, everything works as it should, hence why I still don't use one.

My dad uses one and has nothing BUT problems with his PC, all caused by the firewall and antivirus software.

Exactly. Im not stupid enough to click ads and go on sites with spyware ads etc. If I wanted to do that Id get another pc I didnt care about (or use a virtual pc copy of windows).

Yep. One of my PC's at work showed absolutely no symptoms of virus infection (and it was a Celeron 600 running Windows 2003, so any performance slowdown would have shown up). It was still infected. I personally would rather a slight performance hit than a virus infection.

For the record, that PC was set up mainly as a server. It was fully patched, and rarely used to browse the Internet with any browser, and on the few occasions I did use it to browse, I only used Opera, and certainly never clicked on any adverts.

I seem to recall a test a magazine did about a year or so ago, this involved just connecting a pc to the internt no browsing or downloading. This pc had no firewall or antivirus & when they scanned it 30 seconds later it had a trojan

No disrespect fella, but I'd want to see hard proof of that before believing it, and more-so an explanation of how it was supposedly infected.
That to me sounds Snopes fodder.

And we're still off-topic!
