Note that one release says "set-top box" and the other says "set-top box platform". Is "platform" a mistake?

When considering the Tivo v Horizon argument, I think it's important to consider two things. Firstly, the UK is LGI's largest market. Secondly, there are 3m Tivos installed by VM v 2m Horizon. So Tivo is currently LGI's most popular platform.

"We're very confident that with the tv launch/relaunch that we have coming through this year, that we'll remain very competitive with Sky."

"So far we've seen very little impact from the Sky Q which is of course a very expensive decoder and we're very focussed on improving the offer we have there and EOS is going to be a big part of that."

And to finish the webcast, another Liberty exec says, "...this new box is going to be a 4k box, a pretty high powered box that will get a refreshed tivo UI on it later this year. And then in following years our goal is to get Horizon across all of Europe and the EOS box, this new 4k box is going to be the engine for next generation for video for Liberty."


Opinion:

Mike Fries said at the beginning of the webcast that EOS is a project name for a cloud based set top box. At the end of the webcast, Tom Mockbridge states that SkyQ is a expensive decoder.

VM will NOT launch a new physical 4k box, it'll be cloud based!!.

I haven't yet heard the video, but from what you report it sounds as though the new box will be an updated Tivo, and the box after that will be a Horizon box.

I hope I am right about this because it sounds to me that the Horizon box does not function very well, is slower than the current Tivo and needs a lot more work on it.

Will the new streams mean we finally get our HD Sky Movies On Demand back to what it was and should be?

It's been something like 6 months that service has been dwindled away and the forum just say it is temporary due to testing and the phone lines just go oooh I've not heard of that before.
No one ever offering a fix date or anything though and the £2.50 rise is coming in for this tremendous offering...

Sadly the sky sports and movies increase we don't have a choice as sky put up the prices but to lock away the 4K movies and sports and bt lock away by sport UHD. It will be a 4K box with customers having to pay £8.99 a month for Netflix UHD, £79 for Amazon prime UHD but what customers pay nearly £80 - £120 a month for has all upcoming sky 4K unavailable

As I pointed out to the woman on the phone I totally understand the £2.50 rise if I was getting the same service as Sky.
If I had Sky I could get all of their films in HD like Virgin had 6 months ago.
Now due to Virgin's infrastructure we get punished by having a very limited choice of HD films available through on demand through no fault of the customers.

Many thanks for presenting this information on the new set top box and giving your opinion.
A further question comes to mind - will EOS have Tivo or Horizon software on it outside the UK?
You could be right on the box being cloud-based. I note that the press releases talk of "set-top box" not "PVR" though I don't know what terminology they have used in the past.

Don't worry about Horizon, that's just the same generation as the current Tivo. LGI are talking about their new generation 4K box.
The new box has a working title of EOS.
It will have Tivo software on it in the UK.
We don't know what software it will have outside the UK.
The new EOS box will be rolled out globally as LGI's next generation offering.
Sounds very positive to me. :)

We also have 100% confirmed info on what you can do (apps and so on) with the new TiVo boxes.
