I pay £37.50 for analogue, that includes 1 extra STB @ £7, £13.50 for the Family Pack and £17 for the Sports Pack. Compared to digital, it would cost us £33 for the Family Pack and Sports, and and an extra £15 for another STB, total of £48. Sky digital would cost £43 for their Family Pack, Sports and Multiroom.

Oh, and we HAVE to have NTL's phone service if we want digital so that's another £9.50 if you don't already have a phone (I do have an NTL phoneline fortunately). Sky don't specifically mention you HAVE to have a phone, they only state you need to plug the box into a land based phone line to receive the interactive bits, so If I don't have a phone I don't get the interactive? no great loss there then!

So NTL digital is going to cost me £10.50 more per month and Sky digital £5.50, guess which one we are now considering! The only drawback is Sky only warrant the box for 1 year (NTL rent you the box) and optionally want you to pay an extra £69 per year per box for an extended warranty

Sky seems a better option as I keep hearing about poor NTL digital picture, freezes and pixelation from friends and this forum, but no one I know who has Sky has had problems.

Please don't jump down my throat if I've got something wrong or mis-quoted anything, I compared NTL and Sky and that's more or less how I understand it.

All this just to highlight what an anolgue customer (me) must pay to get ITV3!! :) (barring Freeview).

Maybe Freeview is your answer. The cost of Free-to-air boxes is coming down all the time. For a one off payment you can have ITV3 and possibly some other channels which you may not have and for probably less than a fiver a month.

Yes, why not get Freeview? You can buy a Freeview box for about the cost of a months subscription to Sky.

Not much good if you want the sports channels.

I would go for Sky and get the box for free. You can pick up a second hand box quite cheaply to use in a second viewing position and maybe make do with just the FTA channels or £10 for a mirror subscription on this. I wouldn't bother with the Sky repair plan as my experience is they rarely go wrong and if they do it costs £65 for a call out and replacement box if required.

Have total harmony in your home thanks to Multiroom. You can enjoy a film in one room while someone else gets to see that documentary in another.
So you can watch 2 different channels at the same time :)

Just to clarify on this point - Sky offer a reduced/free of charge installation and free digital box on the condition that you keep your digibox plugged into a working landline 24/7 (regardless of interactive or no). If you don't, then they are legally entitled to bill you the full cost of the installation plus cost of the digital box as per the contract you agree when you signup with them.

True, but AFAIK this is only a condition for the first 12 months. After that, you can unplug the box from your phone line.

I wasn't sure about the phonline and Sky as I couldn't find any info about this on Skys site and their Terms & Conditions.

but that is only if u have 1 digi box. if u have 2 or more then u must keep all boxes conected 2 the the same phone line @ all times even after the 12 months.

If you take advantage of any of Skys subsidised schemes they say that the digibox should be connected to a phoneline for the first 12 months. Some try to say a BT phoneline but it doesn't have to be, mine's connected to a NTL line. Don't worry about incurring call charges if it is connected as you are always warned about any cost before connection. I have never incurred any call costs in the many years I have been with Sky.

How often do sky boxes go tits up though? Are they reliable after 12 months or do Sky self destruct them on purpose to get a repair out of you :)

My parents' Sky box, which was bought in November 1998 (before they started giving them away free!), is still going strong, but is unbelievably slow.

I've just looked on ntl's page and it doesn't list itv3 as a channel. Is it included in the base pack?
