Was it really years ago since we won the Mickey Mouse cup? ;)

Anyway, good defensive performance on Sunday from West Ham. ;)

I was talking in general, but being top of the league above the team who has won it the past two seasons and being in the last 16 of the European cup is something i would have thought to be envious of

Because it is part and parcel of football, but it shouldn't be taken so far, that it spoils your enjoyment of your team ;)

Thats what i mean, some people let it take over supporting thier own team. They prefer to see others loose then see thier own team win.

Yes I was envious of Portsmouth earlier in the season when they topped the league , the fact is despite the entire country being behind your team, chances are you'll still finish the season empty handed

Couldnt be more wrong, i first goto and watch my team play, then after the game i listen to the radio listening to all the other scores coming in around the country.

I do love a good chuckle if Man U get beat.

I don't like Glory Hunters, and Man U has them in bucket loads.

I actually agree with you Man United do tend to have alot probably because of the history of the club but i don't dislike them as such, they do sometimes irritate me though.

Although the mighty Stenhousemuir are the favoured alternative round these here parts (well if you exclude the Rangers and Celtic "fans".)

Alright then, 5th rate if you insist.

Still at least your better than France - oh - wait...

Scotland in 25th did at least manage to beat them recently, and draw with Italy too, so it just goes to show what a farce the World Rankings are.

So you think Scotland should be ranked above France

I'm sure it wasn't long ago either that you drew with Macedonia and lost to Croatia.

My point was not that Scotland should be ranked higher than France but that the World Rankings are a farce.

For once you are correct, Scotland are punching above their weight and should be behind Belarus who are ranked No.70 and who also put pay to your world cup qualifications :p:

Yes but we have also beaten those teams recently aswell and also recorded victories against the likes of Argentina (ranked above France). Also unlike Scotland we actually qualified for the World Cup ;)

Yes, but do we know whether AC is astute enough to adapt, or not, when his only past managerial job is playing hoofit and run at the valley?

At least with someone like Gary Megson (clive hunt) we know he's managed six clubs and played hoof at all of them.

Re: Football Talk 2006/2007 Season

i'm getting worried about this thread it's going away from actually football talking onto trolling and bitter rants.. can we have less personal attacks just because of a football team and more actual talk about the game as none of the other stuff actually gets us anywhere

he's something i've been thinking about.. in the good old days the ball was pretty hard and basically just went in a straight line unless you were a true great like Pele and could put some bend on the ball.. as such it was easier to score through normal play and a free kick wouldn't help you very much

Today that isn't the case and with the movement of the ball now players like Ronaldo can make the ball move in two directions on a free kick... as such a free kick can be easier to score than during normal play.. i'm sure this is why there is so much diving and cheating going on as a free kick is more of a guarentee of a goal

would Drogba have scored at the weekend with a ball from the 60s.. would Ronaldos free kicks go in with a ball from the 60s ?

Probably not but surely thats a good thing. This season we are seeing some of the best goals ever in my opinion and it is probably because of the ball, but i wouldnt take anything away from the players, it still takes alot of skill to score the goals that Drogba and Ronaldo score. I'd rather see a match with lots of goals because of the type of ball rather than very few because of the type of ball.

Definately Hargreaves, seeing as Bayern seem to have softened their stance and I still say Torres should be a target. Henrik Larsson is only a short-term measure - what happens when he returns?

Didn't I read yesterday that Glazer was limiting Fergie to £25 mill per season, that rules Torres out then

Conflicting reports - Glazier plc have said they'll make the funds available if SAF wants a player which to me sounds like there won't be any restrictions (within reason).

An interesting fact if United win today...

Quote:

This match completes the first half of the season, and a victory would give United 47 points. Every club that has stood on at least 47 points after 19 games has gone on to win the title in the history of English top flight football (calculating three points for a win).

Well, Chelski's luck finally ran out today, possibly the better side against Arsenal but definitely second best over the full 90 minutes against, Everton, Wigan & Reading they failed to scrape a last ditch winner. Man United with five second team players in the side move 4 points clear.

John Terry may need an op on his back.

I am sure any World Champion we produce would get an honour royal or not, although it must surely be a clerical error that Bob Cooper has been omitted

As for Gerrard, surely those that are the best deserve recognition, there is no way Beckham could of emulated his efforts in both the European Cup final or the FA cup final

yes but a few years ago Beckham got us to the World Cup finals with that goal against Greece from a free kick.. plus he won the European Cup, FA Cup and Prem all in one year

the Man U captain from that year, Roy Keane was ignorred, yes he is Irish but they can still give honours to foreign citizens

Gerrard won the European Cup in 05 and missed out on the honours then

surely John Terry who won the Prem for the second time over 38 games deserves an MBE too

I have never seen Beckham win a match through determination and strength of personality and as for Terry by his manager's own admission, wasn't the best defender at Chelsea when they won the titles so how can he be more deserving?

Also do you get honoured for achievements in just one year now because I always thought it rolled over and if you weren't quite deserving one year you might be in another or over the course of a lifetime you might earn one if for no specific achievement

Russ 30-12-2006 12:37

Re: Football Talk 2006/2007 Season

No, Terry hasn't done anywhere near enough to deserve a mention in the honours IMO. Wait til he's in his 30s and see what he's acheived by then.

All we needed was for Liverpool to lose as well and it would have been the perfect end to 2006 :)

A good weekend for united, but, there is a long way to go yet.
Plus, I think Mourinho is losing the plot (hopefully), although I am not sure why after all the millions he has spent on players.

"I must credit Fulham and the way they reacted. They know we can't defend so they attacked, it's that simple.
"The story is the same for us. When teams keep seeing us making mistakes they believe they can score goals.
"At the moment we are always in danger. We've conceded two goals four times in-a-row and it doesn't surprise me."
I am sure this is just a blip though, all teams go through bad patches.

I just hope the gap is wide enough in the table for the result not to matter too much when United visit Stamford Bridge on the 17th April 2007.

Also do you get honoured for achievements in just one year now because I always thought it rolled over and if you weren't quite deserving one year you might be in another or over the course of a lifetime you might earn one if for no specific achievement

I think you are forgetting Beckhams National achievments tbh, I seem to remember him running the show on quite a few occasions playing for England, (Greece the notable one), plus he was captain etc.

Anyway, I was only using Beckham as an example over or against Gerrard, who imo has achieved less.

A lot less in my opinion, surely if Gerrard is getting an MBE all of the players who won the treble for United should have got one. He hasn't won or done anything close to what Beckham or even Gary Neville, for example, have. I think he is just getting it for scoring a good goal in the FA cup final last season which imo doesn't deserve an MBE.

Playing well in two games shouldn't be what gets you an MBE in my opinion.

Yep he got it for his performances in two games

Gerrard got it because he is the best English footballer of his generation, Gerrard wins the Euro Cup by himself and you guy's come back with Beckham did well against Greece

Yes all Beckham has done in his career is play well against Greece  Winning the Champions league, FA cup and Premiership on numerous occasions are easily forgotten aren't they.

as i said Roy Keane was captain and got nothing.. ok he isn't British but they can give things out to other nationalities

Ryan Giggs scored that goal against Arsenal in the semi final a match Beckham was also all over and they got nothing either

Giggs is one of the most decorated players ever in football

That's debatable....

Personally, I think he is overrated, and not just because he plays for Liverpool.
Just to remind you, I was only using Beckham as an example, maybe I should have used another worthy player as an example who does not play for Man Utd, unfortunately, I can't think of one :D

You do support the whole football league though.

We always lose to Oldham anyway. 2 and 5 this season, 3 last, last won at Boundary Park in 1953 I think they said on the radio.

How much did Sheridan pay our Friend then? Have to say, great tackle by Friend on Lester in stoppage time.

Its rather sad when being 2nd in the premiership, with 47 in 21 games is considered struggling.

As much of it is ManUre flying high (for once) with 54 from 22, though. (2.54 per game = 93 points for a season)

i have no idea what on earth Park brings to the team.. he doesn't even put in any effort.. at least Fletcher and O-Shea try and do something even though they aren't good enough.. Park just runs about looking lost and isn't good enough at this level.. we have very little depth in the squad and need a new striker in Jan, although we have Rossi back.. with Saha out we only have Rooney and Larsson so if one of them gets injured we are in the same boat again

VDS isn't good enough in goal either.. he should have tipped round at least one of them goals yesterday and cost us a goal with Reading too

so far the only thing West Ham have done is beat us then been poor the rest of their games

It's a confidence thing at the back, add to that we haven't had a right back since Repka left, Spector, Paintsal, Meers and Daily might as well spend Saturday's at home for the good that they do us on the pitch. Interestingly enough I see we are in for Upson again, the last time we were in for him we signed Bowyer instead, let him go to one of our rivals and got relegated!

The bit about Mourinho came from the BBC, it says the story was reported in various newspapers and I agree totally that it would be farcical to sack him because they were struggling (although didn't that happen to Ranieri, finishing second and reaching the Champions league final wasn't good enough then) however now is the time to scrutinise his performance, he probably made it look easy when they were winning every week, the measure of greatness is how you behave when things are going against you

If the current trend continues, it looks as if Leeds will go down to the Third Division (sorry, Coca Cola Football League One), and Scunthorpe will be promoted to the Second Division (sorry, Coca Cola Football League Championship).
