I could be wrong but maybe the config file has been called the same just so it overwrites the last one. I am on a STB but in computer terms it looks like they have just changed a setting in the file and clicked save instead of Save as, sent it out and then when you reboot the modem will check the file and allow a faster throughput. After all, if it is set to the middle section of speeds there should be no reason to change much. my STB says ***.mid.stb or such cos there is only 1mb, 4mb and 10mb.

Sounds like common sense to me but hey this is NTL maybe not. As long as it works will it matter?
:)

I'm in HG3 and my connection was quite slick this morning... before I came to work I ran a speed test and it was still 2meg... but it seemed slick anyhow so I can't complain... if I had the choice between 4meg as erratic as it is now, and 2meg stable I'd sooner stay on 2meg.... but if it's 2meg erratic or 4meg erratic then I'll go for the faster erratic! :erm:;)

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

OK - got back from holidays to find upgrade to 4Mb in place and speeds test gave nice steady results - around 3.8. Then it downgraded back to 2Mb yesterday. Today it is back up to 4Mb but speeds are all over the place - below is typical:

1st 512K took 1352 ms = 378.7 KB/sec, approx 3120 Kbps, 3.05 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1723 ms = 297.2 KB/sec, approx 2449 Kbps, 2.39 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1772 ms = 288.9 KB/sec, approx 2381 Kbps, 2.33 Mbps
4th 512K took 1272 ms = 402.5 KB/sec, approx 3317 Kbps, 3.24 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2817 Kbps, 2.75 MbpsShould I be concerned? or is this just a teething trouble thing. Why was it 3.9 and steady earlier, before downgrade/upgrade but dodgy now?

Thanks

southampton was on 4meg but back to 2meg, i rang ntl at my expence and asked why I can't upgrade, the guy went off and come back again and just said the have major hardware problems which are being investigated, and that everybody who were upgraded in southampton have now been down graded. The best thing is I've just had my bill from them and its got 4meg broadband service on it.. Good old NTL !

Getting closer, I live in Leyton.

How do I do a soft reboot on the Samsung STB or do I just have to switch off at the mains?
I had the STB switched off overnight, turned it on around 2.00pm and did not get any of my subscription channels for about 10mins. Thought something happened but still on 2MB.

Churlish to complain perhaps, while others have not yet had the upgrade.

But here in Reading, whilst we gone up a notch

Sat, 17 Jun 2006 07:50:55 UTC

1st 512K took 1500 ms = 341.3 KB/sec, approx 2812 Kbps, 2.75 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2682 Kbps, 2.62 Mbps

I've seen nothing beginning with a 3.xx yet

Not quite the 4meg we had thought we might get, maybe it true what some said, that the network just couldn't cope

Relaxing is very much an odd concept to some people in here - as is the idea of 'real life'.;)

Are you mental? This 'Topic' has 79 pages now! Is there not enough 'Topic' in the other 78 pages?

Sorry but that was just a silly comment to make.

[Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Hi all first post :)

I've been on NTL 2 Mb B/B for a few years now so the free upgrade to 4 Mb was a nice surprise. I've been on NTL upgrade page and it states that I'm already switched to 4 Mb, phoned C/S in India & told, " thats correct you are on 4Mb" I think.??

So why is it that ALL the speed tests I use, off this site & others, I'm still on 2 Mb...1.9Mb to be precise.??

Anyone have any ideas????

Using a Home200 cable modem by the way.

Regards

^ its that sort of comment that sparks off stupid arguments in these threads and then you get pages full of two people with massive egos arguing over something really stupid.

So if every one is going to end up with 10mb what are they going to do about people like me who have a older type stb that can't cope with any thing faster than 1mb?

Just ignore him then, baiting/flaming him amounts to bullying tactics in my eyes.

Rant over.

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Last night I found my basic cable package had been kicked off - I could still get the movie channels, thought. Rebooting the box didn't help, so I called Customer service. He said he would do a reboot and I should 'phone back in 2 hours if nothing had happened.

Of course, it all went OK and I was back up and running. It never occured to me to check my BB speed until now. I seem to have the 4 meg service now.

Thank you NTL. Mind you I would have liked to be told that's why everything went screwy. Other than that, quite OK on the whole. Yes, I lost telly for about an hour, but I watched some DVDs instead, so no 'world in peril' stuff.

What a bunch of great guys!

Well here in Manchester we have just been offline for over 4hours of zerro speed. So not sure NTL can sustain 4mb in this area without spending money my down times are always long and over the years starting to be more regular. instead of once every 4 yrs to yearly.
NTL only said their was a problem in Oldham area when I called but I was also affected so most of Ashton area would have been also.

come back online and still 2mb config file.
