Not exactly a free upgrade is it ?
I was told on the phone several times that the upgrade would be free.

I guess they want all the STB users to cancel, what about those STB users who got a FREE modem replacement when they rang asking to have 10 meg, I guess the rest of us are secnd class citizens.

Really ****ed off now, way to go NTL

I feel really sorry for people using STBs right now.

£50 for a fricking modem upgrade?! I have the Terayon and have been a paying customer since i got 512k service years ago, now i have to pay £50 to actually recieve a service that i am already paying for? This is insanity

Sorry but in my opinion it will be a cold day in hell when they offer unlimited 10meg.

I will be very happy if they offer me 2 meg unlimited at the same price they are charging for 2 meg limited :)

Because if i remember correctly you cannot have a sacm on a pay at the post office account. It has to be direct debit or credit card.

Yep sticking it to their existing customers again, I pay them a *lot* a year, yet they would rather lose that rather than give me a free upgrade that they give to other people because they *chose* to give me an STB instead of cable modem when they connected me, I pay for their mistake..I don't think so....

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

There is no mention about when the 1 & 2 Meg customers will be upgraded for free. Only this statement:-

I'm on a 1Mb or 2Mb service - when will I be able to get 10Mb?

All of our customers can upgrade to the power of 10 (subject to modem capabilities) If you get Broadband through a cable modem you can upgrade online right now.

Why no mention of the free upgrade next year?

I wonder if the 5mb speed quoted for STB's is a 5mb config file, or if they send a 10mb config but you only get whatever the STB can manage ?

Some people on here quoted the STB's reaching 8 or 9 mb in some conditions.

I was just thinking the same thing, there must be someone on here with 3mbit Samsung who can do a speed test.I read a while ago that the Samsung can do 100 times 56 k modem speed,so 5 mbit seems about right.

Faster? Yes, upto 24Meg, 1.3Meg up
Cheaper? Yes , £24 compared to £37.99, or £34.99 later. Also UNLIMITED, No cap!
more organised? Yes, or switched providers quicker!
Even with BT line rental and installation, it works out cheaper for the year AND you can have the same phone (unlimited 24) and a faster net connex.

Do you work for NTL? If you do you'll want to keep your customers. I don't, I've just weight up whats available.

I realise that, but for people on ntl's 1 & 2 Mb service who don't visit these kind of forums, the only info they are getting from the ntlworld website is that they can only get 3Mb by upgrading to the highest tier.

There is no mention that they will be getting a free upgrade next year.

LLU adsl is cheaper
BT ipstream adsl works out more expensive in most cases.

The argument swings tho for those who have managed to get their ntl service without a phoneline.

Personally the price isnt the most important aspect of my service, I dont mind paying a bit more for better service.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

What happens if I get Broadband through a set-top box?

Download speeds are dependent upon equipment capability. Currently the set-top box is capable of supporting speeds up to 5Mb, so that is the maximum speed you would receive after an upgrade to the new 10Mb service.

Err...no. That's not correct is it?

I know people who are still using the Pace box for their broadband, which are only capable of 1Meg. Now the swap from Pace to Samsung was free, so would Pace owners still be expected to pay the £50 charge for a modem?

I see from this page, that ntl are trying to put you off of upgrading to a new modem! http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/stb/

"In general we would not recommend an upgrade unless you are sure that you need these very high speeds, and that your PC is optimised to make use of 10Mb."

They then go on to list a load of reasons as to why you may not get the full 10 Megs anyway. They seem to want the best of both worlds.

Chrysalis 05-12-2005 11:41

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I guess unless things improve contention wise you wont see a great deal of difference if you upgrade the modem anyway, as long as the old one is stable and doesnt drop out like the 120s it maybe best to just keep the samsung.

I'm sure, I have a samsung STB and on Saturday morning I checked my MRTG log, between 3am and 6am I was getting upto 9.6 Meg.

I posted the MRTG graph to this forum earlier, but here it is again...

Later on Saturday afternoon I also got 8.3 meg but it was only for an hour, since then I have had nothing higher than 2.0 meg (I have been logging my connecton for the past eight months, never had a blip like this before).

I can only assume they were testing during this period, but it clearly shows that my Samsung is cable of high speed, guess they have other factors for limiting the speed.

I'm refusing to pay £50 for an upgrade, NTL get two STB's, 3 Meg Internet and phone line off me, I asked for a seperate modem when they upgraded my PACE stb to the Samsung but they told me they had none in stock! The Samsung has been nothing but problems especially when being used with my Tivo (remote IR codes don't always work), I'm going to call later today to insist on a free modem upgrade (and a return to the PACE box)

I don't think I've been upgraded fully yet (if I have I've seen no change), will be happy to post another graph if and when I'm upgraded.

Tim

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I rang technical support to find out if my modem can handle the 10meg speed, I was told IT COULD by one of their so called engineers!! I was told by several different people that the MOTOROLAR SURFBOARD SB3100 CAN NOT TAKE 10MB. My download rate on the 3mb line speed was maxing out @360kbps. Today my download rate id maxing @ 670kbps thatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s nearly double!! I have worked this out to be roughly the speed of a 5meg connection. I questioned the guy on the phone at bb support and he said my line has not been upgraded as yet. I will admit the guy on the phone (ROBBIE) did not appear to really know what I was on about and kept stalling when I asked him questions about connection speeds. I know for a fact that he is some guy sat in a tiny office in Asia somewhere. WHERE HAVE ALL THE ENGLISH PEOPLE GONE!!! Al I wanted to know was if my modem could be replaced! I was told that it does not need replacing and the 10mb service will not take affect in my area till after December. I live in the Ipswich region and a mate of mine lives about 3miles away and he is getting 10mb LOL is it me or am I missing something hear!!! Anyone else had frustrating issues regards to NTL BB support??? I am seriously thinking about making a complaint about this as I have been with NTL since they started years ago and have been a loyal customer and when I require professional help and support I DO NOT GET IT!! Steve (not angry or nout J) :td:

"£5 0 upgrade fee payable in respect of certain existing equipment"

Above taken from the NTL 10MB site.

http://www.ntlworld.com/microsites/10/ - At the bottom of the page in green text

If that means because I have an old ntl 100 modem, I have to PAY to have the modem upgraded to receive the full 10MB service (Even though im paying £38 a month) - Im off to ADSL.

Call it throwing rattle out of the pram if you wish, but that just sucks.

The ability to provide this high speed data is not limited to 12K on the standard set up, as it is able to download at up to 76 times quicker than this! 38Mbps to be precise but it is unlikely that we will get to see this.
The reason it can download at these speeds is because it is intended for useage on small business servers and workstation collections. Up to 16 PC`s can be connected up for provision from one modem.

I've heard a lot of people say Terrayon cant do it, I think its been posted on here which can and cant. I think it can't, however the box I had when I got it mentioned 38mbps like you said. Its been stuck on 4-5mbps for 2 days it's not going to improve I think. My newsgroup reader is showing that my connection is maxed at 5mbps on the bar thing at the bottom also..

ntl to withdraw PS2 and Xbox Service

I was looking at the 10mbit info page on NTL's site and it has this section about withdrawing the PS2 and Xbox Service when you upgrade to 10mbit connection and they will also remove the £2 monthly fee.

I don't understand this as I've been using my Xbox on NTL since the Xbox Live service started and I've never paid any £2 monthly fee.
And when it says it's withdrawing the service does that mean Xbox Live will no longer work if I upgrade to 10mbit?

I already use a router etc. so I think I'll be okay, but it's a bit confusing when they say they are removing the service in one paragraph but then saying you can still use it if you use a router on another paragraph.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

ayates, my understatding was the £2 fee was if you where using 2 computers / a PC and an XBOX both from the cable modem (no router)
One on USB, one on Ethernet.

Both would get a real IP address and for that privilage you pay the £2.

In your case you wernt using that function since you had a router so your not paying for it!

Ah! Okay that makes sense now, Thanks.
So the FAQ page is badly worded then. They are not actually removing the Xbox/PS2 service, just the service that lets you connect your console and PC at the same time without a router.

Not a good day, I've been holding off phoning until the 10Mb was oficially released so I phoned this morning and spoke to customer services. Unfortunately, the lady I spoke to didn't know how to upgrade me and said she would call me back. At 6pm, I got home from work having had no phone call to discover my broadband was down. Tried all the usual tricks, rebooted my router, attached a PC directly to the STB but no luck so I called tech support. The guy I spoke to got me to reboot the set top box then told me I needed to speak to customer services as I had been incorrectly provisioned then before I could get a chance to say anything said 'Thanks for calling NTL, goodbye' and I was back on hold. After waiting for 20 minutes, I hung up, called Customer Services and asked what had happened to be told that the lady I spoke to this morning had removed the 3Mb service from my account and not done anything else! I was then put back on the 3Mb and told that the only way I could get 10Mb was to call sales, pay the 50 pound fee and get a cable modem as they have now discovered the STBs can't copy with the service. She did offer to half the upgrade price due to me being cut off I think I'll wait to see what happens with the upgrade fee in the next few weeks.

Is what I was told true? Are people with STB's having problems? Has anybody with an STB been upgraded this evening?

Samsung STB 3meg BB

My tale;

Phoned CS this morning, the lady I spoke to tried to upgrade my STB to 10meg but she couldn't set it at her end. She put me through to another department. Sounded like this dept was in India and the lady there had no record of my account. The Indian lady then put me through to another dept (back in blighty) and the chap there told me that Samsung boxes were capable of 30meg but there were no 'codes' for the upgrade on STB's and said he would phone me back. Ha!! I believed him, and of course he didn't phone back.

Phoned CS this evening, spoke to a lady who told me STB's can't handle the speed increase and I would need a SACM. She put me through to sales and a very friendly and extremely efficient lady said she would organise an engineer to install a FREE SACM because it was a FREE upgrade. An engineer is booked for Tuesday 13th Dec. BB through the STB is switched off when the SACM is switched on.

A partial result methinks, and I'll report back when I'm up and running.

It's all pretty disappointing so far.

I've got an NTL:100 modem and according to http://www.irishisptest.com/myspeed/ I'm getting 3.63Mbps with an upstream of 492Kbps.

In fact, I was getting a faster connection last week before the official launch.

Is anyone else in Glasgow having the same experience? Should I be phoning NTL or are they still working on the upgrade?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Got home from work at about 3pm and tryed a download of a file and got around 360-370 kb/s
i rang Ntl to tell them that im still downloading at the same speed as 3mbit i said that i dont think ive been upgraded to 10mbit
She said i will upgrade you now i waiting a minute
She came back and said that i have already been upgraded today
got the question have i booted the modem
i said i will shut down both pc and modem and try that

So i did for like 10 minutes why i did abit off tiding up
Rebooted up tryed a download again from my own ntl webpage and tred microsoft webpage and still only got 360-370 kb/s

Im Running on a silver NTL modem and it says its a NTL: Home 200

Do i need to change to a NTL :Home 250

i cant understand why i havent seen any change in speed since ive been on 3mbit since ntl bought it out and never had any speed drops

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

As expected since the upgrade my connection has gone down hill more than ever, its slower than it used to be on the 3 Mb service pmsl.
typical speeds between 450 and 900 kbps down and according to speed test anything upto 20% packet loss, i did see 3 to 4.5 Mb during the day about 2 pm but its back down again now .
I hope they fix this soon, i only have this speed for gaming and with this amount of packet loss its actually quite funny, still i live in eternal hope.

My service was upgraded today, I use a Terajet T210, and I am seeing exactly 8Mbit down, and 512k up...

I am happy, to be honest the extra 200K/sec doesn't bother me at this moment in time!!!

I will trawl my way back through this rather *small* thread and see what other Terajet customers are experiencing......

How is your TJ210 connected? I assume you are using ethernet and not USB, also no wireless in there at all? If you have "11Mbit" wireless, it will almost certainly be causing you to see 5.5Mbit... If not, no idea... I am seeing exactly 8Mbit down on mine and 512k up......

Reading this thread, my opinion of NTL has sunk as low as that many other people on here have of them. First, they can't come up with a consistent line over whether or not the Samsungs can handle 10MB. Now they've decided they can't, they seem unable to come up with a consistent line over whether a SACM for 3MB Samsung customers is free or £50. I just hope they come to their senses, as they did with the 3MB upgrade, and get rid of the fee FOR ALL.

Rant over (for now), and ResponseTek completed. (Oh, and I'm not blaming CSRs, I guess it is just that the company is incapable of briefing its own staff)

OK, had enough of reading the pure whining......

Lets see, we've received a service upgrade, from 3Mbit to 10Mbit.....

Some of us are seeing 8Mbit because thats all our cable modems can handle.... Some a little less.

I know my cable modem was free, and if I was to move to ADSL (as some people seem to claim they will, now that even at 5.5Mbit their service exceeds that which ADSL can provide in most of the country) I would have to buy my own router. For a decent router, you are probably talking around the £60-£80 mark... so why complain at £50 to upgrade your cable modem???

Some people claim they aren't getting what they are paying for.... OK - You subscribed to this service as a 3Mbit service, maybe a 2Mbit or even 1Mbit service.....

The fact that its now 34.99Mbit - for in my case 8Mbit, and 512k up instead of the £50 I was originally paying for 1Mbit down and 300k up - is great in my opinion.....

I just guess that some people out there are never happy. Good luck with your 2Mbit ADSL, or is that 1Mbit or 512k because you are too far from your exchange..... So long, oh and enjoy the fact that although it looks it, the grass really isn't that much greener over there!

*******************RANT OVER*******************

I'd just like to say thanks NTL for the price reduction and service upgrade.

Have you tried ethernet, and dropping wireless out of the equation???

How are you testing your throughput? I have found that the most consistent result was using DUmeter, and then grabbing a Quake4 demo from jolt.co.uk's download section.... Their UK ONLY server seems to have loads of bandwidth.... Have used it for testing 155Mbit+ links at work!

OK, further to my previous message I've gone to http://192.168.100.1/
and get the following readings:

Downstream Receive Power Level : -9.91 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 31.00 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 55.00 dBmv

According to my reading of one of the stickies on this forum, these numbers are outside of the acceptable range.

Can someone confirm that and give me an NTL phone number of someone who can help (for some reason I can't access the NTL web page showing the support phone numbers).

If it makes a difference, I'm in Glasgow.

If that was aimed at me, I'm not 'whining' about a free upgrade, whether to 5MB, which, according to the web site, is all I'll get, or 8MB. or 10MB. My complaint is the total lack of any consistency. Why are some people being given free replacement modems, (or, in the case of STB users, additional modems), while others are being told they'll have to pay £50? Why were some people being told that Samsungs would definately support 10MB (someone early this thread was told 'up to 30MB), while others were being told they would only support 7-8MN, and now we are tols they will support a MAXIMUM of 5MB?

Only way to be sure.....

I'd just disconnect the wireless for 5 minutes, connect with ethernet cable and give it a go..... My TJ210 is definately giving 8Mbit.

Perhaps wait a day or so too, I am guessing a lot of people are exercising their new connections and there may be a little contention out there!!!

Which wireless router are you using?

LOL why would i say thanks for the upgrade oh and by the way thanks for making my service slower than it was before.
If we all put on our rose tinted glasses and said ta very much lets not worry about any problems can you imagine the state this service would be in.

I'm glad that you are happy with your service i really am but spare a thought for the feelings of the few (and i suspect it is only a few ) who seem to be worse off, it can be very frustrating and this site serves as an outlet for that frustration and often a means to render help and advice.
My connection is VERY poor at the moment but i tend to be more apathetic about these issues, some how sooner or later it will work it's self out

Well, i'd be inclined to wait until tomorrow..... Can you imagine the contention of everybody now thrashing the living daylights out of their faster internet connections???

I noticed that adslguides speedtest isn't performing now as it was earlier this afternoon - I am guessing they are experiencing high load today.....

I am not saying I don't sympathise with those having genuine trouble, but "I am only seeing 5.5Mbit, or 8Mbit" isn't really a problem in my eyes.

Ah well, i've thrown in my 2 cents worth.....

Good luck all!

I do not appear to have received any upgrade:

1st 512K took 1453 ms = 360831 KB/sec, approx 2973 Kbps, 2.9 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1438 ms = 364595 KB/sec, approx 3004 Kbps, 2.93 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1468 ms = 357144 KB/sec, approx 2943 Kbps, 2.87 Mbps
4th 512K took 1422 ms = 368698 KB/sec, approx 2950 Kbps, 2.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2968 Kbps, 2.9 Mbps

I have rebooted the Samsung STB, rebooted the router and rebooted the PC but still 3Mbps.

Note the earlier comments about having to pay £50 for a modem. I currently pay NTL in the region of £80/90 a month and I would rather spend that elsewhere, even if the service is reduced, than allow NTL to rip me off.

Any idea what sort of daily/monthly download limits are likely to apply to the (currently) lower speeds

I'd guess (based on 75GB/month for £35)

(1MB) £17.99 is 51.4% of £35, so I'd expect about 38GB/Month
(2MB) £24.99 is 71.4% of £35, so I'd expect about 54GB/Month

Of course, this is all wishful thinking at present

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Just spoke to some bloke at Customer Services who REFUSED to give me the modem for nothing. (I have a STB). I asked how they can be charging some people for the modem, and not others. When he asked how I knew this, I told him about this site and he huffed and puffed.

Anyhow, he refused to budge, "So what is it you want me to do, sir?"....so I told him to downgrade me to 2meg as I refuse to pay 50quid for something that I should essentially be getting for nothing, as others have. He still didn't budge and so I am now down to 2mb at £24.99. So at least im saving a tenner a month now!.

He did say, however that he would note what I said about some people getting it for nothing (yeah, right...and stick it in his filing tray!).

Got a good mind to cancel the bloody thing altogether now and go ADSL.

Why are they so inconsistent?. Is they ANYONE on here who can do something about this?.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

This thread makes my blood boil.

The only reason i got 3MB from NTL was I was waiting on the 10MB upgrade when rumours first became of it months ago. They installed me with a STB

And I hate the way arrogant people who have the upgrade tell the others not to moan. WE PAY THE SAME TOO!

At the time when i got NTL internet it was cheaper and faster. Now its trying to catch up with DSL.

But today, you can get faster cheaper DSL than ntl internet and switch providers easier too.
My example: UK Online £24 8Meg Unlimited - 22Meg (ADSL2 where avail) £30 Unlimited

And to those that said we should'nt moan about the £50 fee. EErr We're already paying £38 EVERY month, an adsl modem is £30, or cheaper. Ebay? So yes, thats something else to moan about.

There's 'supposed' to be a CS supervisor ringing me back today. The woman i spoke to yesterday was actually eating on the phone, and abrubtley would say 'WHAT?', not pardon, or excuse me when she couldn't here me properly. And funnily enough, there were no supervisors available, but that they finished work 40 mins later - wierd time to have a break?

I suggest those with contacts to managers started feeding back the consenus, as I'm sure im not alone my feelings, as a good few posts show these days. CS needs a hell of a good revamping from a customers point for a view. Not to mention the que to get through.

I spoke to NTL CS on Fri 2nd Dec to ask for free upgrade to 10mb told was unable to process it at the time, but would be done automatically within a fortnight, after reading many posts saying the Samsung STB was unable to function at full capabilities I asked about this and they replied that they didn't have a clue and would put me through to Sales. After speaking to sales was informed NTL would install a blue SACM on Saturday 10th free of Charge and was there anything else they could do for me?. After reading the NTL 10mb microsite I am now wondering whether they are going to charge me the £50 upgrade fee, or if its due to a high demand of people requesting the upgrade immediately.

When I get home tonight and find I have to re-register because they have knocked me down to 2mb, I may very well end up cancelling the thing, as I am so frustrated now. Can't even have the telly without the flaming phone!.

So, they will have gone from losing a tenner a month for the sake of a poxy £50 modem, to losing a customer completely.

But then, being the corporate animal that they so obviously are, I don't suppose they will be that bothered as another sucker will sign up to this dreadful service to replace me.

When it works its fine, when it doesn't, or you have to call CS for ANY reason, you will know what we angry dudes are getting at....

I agree something is definately not right at NTL, usually takes us 3-4 phone calls to CS to find someone who can answer a question without saying "Im not sure" or "I wouldnt know". When we asked about the upgrade we had to mention that on joining NTL they provided the STB as only joined as Cable and Telephone, about 12 months later we joined as a broadband customer which was 600kb then I think but was there highest speed, they told us they wouldnt put a sacm in as the stb was fine then after a few upgrades they told us they needed to replace the pace stb to a samsung and that it would be done free of charge, when asked again was told the new stb would be fine. Then lo and behold now the STB can't handle the upgrade so told would be replaced, after reading these posts im also expecting the £50 charge to appear on my next bill. I'm actually starting to wonder if the right hand knows what the left hand is doing down there at NTL.

Old Linksys Router CAN do 10MB

A few posts back I mentioned I had problems getting more than 5MB with my NTL 120 Modem and my BEFW11S4 V1 Router. It is quite old (circa 2002).

Since the replacment of the 120 with a 250, my speeds are very near to 10MB. Whereas before they were never over 5MB.

You may find a firmware upgrade for some routers that could make things even better too. Not sure on that model though.

I'm having a modem installed on Friday, no mention of a fee, but we shall see. I don't think they are upgrading any STB's yet, it seems that everyone that calls (me included) are immediately offered a modem instead.

Thanks for the sympathy dude - its because NTL have the same attitude as you that so many people are being fobbed off and are being forced to either leave or put up with a shoddy service.

No-one is 'forced' to do anything.

If I don't like a service I receive, I get rid of it and go elsewhere.

Anyone in the Portsmouth area get the upgrade?.....
Phoned CS yesterday, and was told it was available. All I had to do was reboot the modem.Tried that several times, and am still on 3mb.
Rung CS again today to be told that it is not available till January, but I might notice a slight speed increase approaching January.
Am I being fobbed off, as per usual?

Registered for 10mb and had installation done today as a new customer and got a 250 cable modem

Thing is the engineer said that I need a PIN number or something to get my account off the ground and that there is a big delay in sending out PIN numbers so is he right or is there any way customer services could issue me a PIN over the phone as apparently its in some welcome pack I haven't got yet

Can't phone customer services as can't use work phones for private calls so thought would ask here
