You might be only two streets away but you may not be on the same UBR.

There is a lot of complaining about not being able to get the full 10 Mbps which anyone who knows a little bit about how cable internet works would have known would happen. There are several hundred customers on each UBR but only around 38 Mbps to share amongst them and an allowance has to be made for overheads which reduces this further. It doesn't take too many brain cells to realise that if only four users on that UBR are online and trying to max out their connections that they won't get the full 10 Mbps. It is very unlikely though that only four users are online at one time, there will be far more than that, probably in excess of 100. What share of 38 Mbps will they each get if there are 100 and all trying to max out their connections at the same time? If you have been upgraded to 10 Mbps already and are getting 5 Mbps or more then you are lucky. The chances are that it won't get better with time, only get worse as more and more users are upgraded.

In your particular case, you say that you are "prepared to wait", but also that you phoned up to request the upgrade. Anyway, from what you have said above it appears to be another case of bad communication in that CSRs serving Glasgow were told to upgrade people who requested and that the area was ready. Who knows exactly what they were told. Anyway, you were given the upgrade because you asked for it and they had been told to give it to those that asked for it. You were also well aware that it was still being rolled out, so how you can be unhappy with something that is faster yet is still in the implementation stage is a bit suprising to me.
When I called NTL to ask about the upgrade from 3MBit to 10Mbit, I didn't expect to get it but was told I could have it. AT THAT TIME I was lead to believe everything was in place for 10Mbit in my area - it's only now I have discovered that my area isn't ready. Initially, the guy wasn't 100% sure his system would accept the upgrade instructions but when the order was processed he stated that the 10Mbit service must be available in my area. I was also warned that as I'd called just prior to 8pm that the upgrade might not go through that night but it obviously did.

Currently, I'm only getting about 4Mbit downstream. When I said I was "prepared to wait", I meant that I would wait and see if my speed would improve after the upgrade to 10Mbit - I've been saying that I'm prepared to wait while further work is undertaken.

So ok Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢m only on 1MB and happy to wait but could someone please tell me will NTl replace my 120 Modem for this new 250 one. I cant believe it I actually had an engineer out with a replacement DC for the modem and he brought out what I take was a blue 250 and took the DC out of the box and I should have asked can I have that new modem.

Thats some job replacing all the modems.

Is there something wrong with the Adslguide speedtest?

Been having varying results, which doesn't tie in with results from Robin Walker's site (10mb), or the download speeds i am getting (1.2mb/s). I am, according to the Adslguide speed test, running at between 5mb and 9mb.... just doesn't add up :erm:

I also find that a lot of the time, the Adslguide speed test isn't working, something i haven't seen before (unless its upgraded NTL customers doing what i am doing) :p:

They're not replacing all the modems. Unless your NTL 120 has something wrong with it causing it not to give you a decent degree of service, I see it as a bit pointless requesting a new one. :)

If everyone did that, prices would have to go up to cover the cost. :td:

did that speed test and got this result

Wed, 09 Nov 2005 23:00:09 GMT
1st 128K took 156 ms = 840205 Bytes/sec = approx 6991 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 141 ms = 929589 Bytes/sec = approx 7734 kbits/sec

4th 128K took 156 ms = 840205 Bytes/sec = approx 6991 kbits/sec

These results appear to be rather fast: maybe this page was in the browser cache.

The TJ210 has a 10BaseT port on the back, and as such, you're maxing out its Ethernet interface. Sure, it'll handle far more than that on the cable side and across the CPU, but it can't shift it onto the LAN!

I did have a TJ210, and in an internal test I took part in a while back, that's what it maxed out to. Its since failed and been replaced with an ambit 250, which is giving me spot on 10mbps

There is a fair bit of difference between digging up the streets in the UK to put cable in and slinging cables overhead between poles as often is the case in the States.

Hi there,

That website is showing the tweaks which can be made to your connection, and how itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s currently performing. The RWIN is what you need to pay attention to; as if this is incorrectly set in relation to your connection then you could experience poor performance, in both speed and latency.

A good way to judge your advertised kbits/sec is to run the test on ADSL Guide, on the analysis page it will show you the connection speed in kbits/sec. Then fill in the box with the information you get, and reanalyse your connection.

When it states RWIN Recommendations on the broadband tweak page, simply download the program †˜DRTCPâà ¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€Å ¾Ã‚¢ which is available as a link underneath the RWIN settings.

When you download that, just enter a figure between the two recommend values that the website has given you into the first empty box in DRTCP. Make sure that the correct network adapter is selected from the drop down box, then save the settings and reboot your system, to make 100% sure that the new settings take effect.

Hope that helps,

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

I'm not aware of anyone who's been upgraded automatically yet...that'll probably start happening within the next couple of weeks.

A lot of the connections aren't perfect yet, with people not receiving the full speed, due to modem problems and network rebalancing work needed in their area. So to be honest, it's probably best that the service is properly judged in 3 or 4 weeks time, after theyâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ve had time to do all the final tweaking they need to.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

This thread is really funny. Common sense FAQ's

Q Why is 10 MB only available to new customers?
A Ntl recognise most new customers jump straight in at 10MB and will arrange to do all the neccessaries admin wise and have a team of engineers outside their door within 10 minutes of ordering. In the unlikely event this takes a little longer, there is every chance the planned upgrade work for 10 MB may JUST have coincidentally occurred at about the time a standard install visit happens.

Q Why is it when I have upgraded myself to a higher tier that has not yet been officially launched I get a bigger bill each month?

A You are an impatient and impetuous twit and should look before you leap. You may have a considerably quicker connection -you may have a hugely quicker connection - for sure the latter will happen soon if you don't sod about again within a month.

Q I have spent all day on the phone and I have/have not been upgraded. Why do I trawl through a massive thread on CF then compare my lack of communicative skills with others knowing full well I have probably missed any valid point?
A The number you dialled was an 0800 number, which although you perceived it as free, unfortunately your mobile provider will charge you for all of the calls. Get up early tomorrow and google for a higher paid job.

Q Why is this bloke having a go at me personally?
A Chances are he is not - but hey red rep him anyway no-one will ever know except him and you will feel really big and in control of things

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Hi guys (sorry this is going to be a long one),

In reference to my earlier post I did contact the Coventry Trading Standards Office, I explained to them what my concerns were and they are interested in following this up and have asked me to email screen-shots and description of the upgrade process and if anyone else wants to voice their concerns about this current on/off/trial/limited 10Mb service then you can email consumer.advice@coventry.gov.uk with the subject line: "NTL 10Mb Upgrade"

Now to explain what I think is wrong with how NTL have conducted themselves so far.

I was not aware of the 10Mb upgrade happening (although I hear that it was coming) So when I decided I would now like to upgrade to either 2mb or 3mb tier I went to their main site and clicked on Tools & Services which produced this screen (sorry for it being Duel)

http:www.familytree-rice.com/ntl/ntl1.JPG

I then clicked Speed Upgrade which took me to this page

http:www.familytree-rice.com/ntl/ntl2.JPG

As you can see they are showing 1Mb 2Mb 3Mb tiers so I click the "upgrade your Cable Modem"

which took me to this page.

http:www.familytree-rice.com/ntl/ntl3.JPG

So I enter in my details...which takes me to this page.

http:www.familytree-rice.com/ntl/ntl4.JPG

As you can see I'm already on the 1Mb tier, I seen the 10Mb tier and thought "bloody hell the 10Mb service is available" Hell lets go for that as its better speed to the £ than the 2Mb tier, so I upgraded to the 10Mb tier solely based on these details.

Once I had upgraded I then discovered that the maximum I was actually getting was only 3Mb, I thought hmmmm......must be a problem I'll ring tech support,

Tech support say....... Yes you are on the 10Mb service but you will only get the 3Mb service until end of 2005 or early 2006.

I say....... Hang on a minute I upgraded to 10Mb so would expect to get as close as damn it to the 10Mb you are offering, if you can only supply 3mb why are you advertising the 10Mb as an option and not still 3Mb?

He says....... because the 3Mb is being replaced with the 10Mb and the only people who can get the 10Mb are new customers.

I say...... so why do I have the option to upgrade to 10Mb if its only available to new customers, which by the way stinks!

He says...... because the 10Mb service is a replacement for the 3Mb service, so you will then be ready for when they do upgrade everyone to the 10Mb service.

I say..... I agreed to a service that I was offered on your upgrade page that said up-to 10Mb for £37.99p no where does it state that I will only be getting 3Mb so what you are actually offering is a false description of service which by the way is illegal.

He says....Ill need to transfer you to Customer services..

Hello....Customer service how can I help you?

I say.....Hi I'm not happy that I have been hoodwinked into taking a higher priced service, but would actually be getting a lower service.

he says....But the price is the same for the 3Mb service and the 10Mb service so your not paying any extra its just that its called the 10Mb service and will be 10Mb when they finish upgrading the network.

I say....But its illegal for you to advertise a certain level of service yet deliberately provide a lower level of service, I have agreed to pay for the 10Mb service but I'm also being told that although I have selected 10Mb yet only new customers can have it, and I will only get 3Mb until such time that NTL decide to upgrade me (end 2005 early 2006) Your description of services mislead me into ordering the higher tier, no where does it say during the upgrade process that there is a limit to the service for existing customers.

He says....You cant order the 10Mb service on the website.

I say....Yes you can, I did.

he says...no you cant, you must be mistaken.

I say.....Grrrrrrrrrrr.....YES YOU CAN.

He says.....well there is nothing we can do, you will be upgraded sometime in 2006

I say what happened to end of 2005?

He says..... thats for people who are already on the 3Mb service.

I say.....Sheeesh...I'm on the 10Mb service and wont get upgraded until 2006

He says...Yes sir that is correct.

I say....I am not happy about this, I want to be downgraded to the 1Mb service I was on before.

He says...you cant change your service again for 30 days.

I say..... so I have to pay £37.99 for a month for the pleasure of being lied to and being mislead into ordering a higher tier?

He says .....No-one has lied to you sir, you will be getting upgraded free of charge.

I say....I'm contacting the Trading Standards Office to see what they have to say about it.

He says...Thats up to you sir....anything else I can help you with.

I say....No thanks!

Within 30sec's of finishing the call my modem re-booted and I'm back on 1Mb service, anyone want to bet that I still get charged the £37.99.

My point of contention is that for those of us that was not aware that the 10Mb service was available (even partially) and being offered it as one of the upgrade options, then NTL are deliberately dangling a carrot in the eyes of everyone who visits the upgrade screen, knowing that they will (as i did) select the higher tier as it offered better value for money, some may argue that the old 3mb service was still only £37.99, so what am I complaining about, I am complaining that their service description is currently false for the 10Mb and is only offered purely to get existing users to upgrade to the 10Mb rather than the 2Mb which gives NTL an extra £13.00 per user, If the 10Mb service is not available to everyone who chooses to upgrade then it should not be described as 10Mb it should still be described as the 3Mb as that is what the user will actually be getting until they are upgraded at a later date.

As the TSO are interested in this then there should be some merit to my complaint :)

Exactly. It's early days yet. Although myself and others have fallen far short of 10Mbit, I think it's fair to wait a while for the network to be completely adapted and (if applicable) for equipment to be replaced.

I think you have a valid point except it's irrelevant whether the person knows or doesn't know the state/existance of or rumoured state/existance of their 10meg service.... if you see a screen which offers it and you click on it you and NTL are entering into a contract where you pay £38 and they provide the service as offered. they appear to have broken their side and must either provide a refund or the service they offered BUT... they did and do state 'upto' 10meg so they could argue that even if you get 3meg you're getting what you're paying for. as this page offers a 2meg tier I recon 'upto' would have to be between 2.01meg and 10meg to (possibly) win their arguement that they are providing an 'upto' 10meg service.
__________________

what they cant do though is say to you that there is 'no possibility' of you getting 10meg during the next 30 days. that would conflict with the offer they made you on that screen of getting 'upto' 10meg in my opinion.

If you are on 10 meg then you have the new 75 gig allowance, If you are on 3meg you are on 30 gig as per the allowance that came with that service when you signed up.

Good morning

I have been watching this topic since it started and thanks to all who made me laugh, anyway, ummââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢d and arrrââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢d shall I sharnt I make the call the CS well curiosity got the better of me so at just gone 8 I did ring.

Very nice man called Andy who kept stressing that the 10mb is for new customers only but the 3mb customers are 1st inline to be auto-upgraded and the rollout at the minute is only a †˜pilot schemeââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ to see how things go so sorry you will have to wait till December.

I then asked if he had the facilities to upgrade me from my present 3mb to the 10mb to join the people already on the †˜pilot schemeââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ and yes I do realise that it is only upto 10mb and yes I realise that I will not see that kind of speed just yet.

I kept in mind what this forum said in past posts and kept it very light and pleasant and bugger me 20 seconds later the modem lights went off and now I am on 10mb, I will do a test and post the result if you want.

Not sure what sort of modem it is but its new and says Ntl:home 200 on the bottom.

Would it be possible for me on 2mb at the moment to upgrade to 10mb?

Thanks

He was told by NTL that upto 10meg was upto 3meg until 2006, and then up to 10meg.

Which part of that do you not understand?

Hi, I got this today,

Thu, 10 Nov 2005 08:53:39 UTC
1st 128K took 297 ms = 441320 Bytes/sec = approx 3672 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 281 ms = 466448 Bytes/sec = approx 3881 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 297 ms = 441320 Bytes/sec = approx 3672 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 297 ms = 441320 Bytes/sec = approx 3672 kbits/sec

Does this mean 3.6mb ??.

I'm on th "Up to 10mb" service using the NTL 120 modem.

Is this more of a network issue or my modem, Thanks.

Looks like 3 meg still, i'm afraid. The upgrade 10 meg may not have happened properly. Try reboiting your modem, if that don't work, get back on the blower to CS, and tell them you were supposed to have been upgraded but they didn't do it properly, and they should do it for you then.

*sigh*
Why are NTL not consistent with the replys that they give.
Why are they upgrading some people and not others.
Twice I've called today, and I've gotten different answers each time.
First, I was told that no upgrades at all will be happening until NTL are happy with what they have, the woman on the phone practically called me a liar when I told her I know that there are people that already have been upgraded to this service.
The second call I was told (same as somebody above), that this was only for new customers on the service and that they had no way of upgrading existing customers!

Ah well, I suppose I just need to keep calling until I get put through to a techie who's actually inclined to help instead of read from some sheet that they've been given.

Yup I've just had a tech visit and put an attenuator on my 120 as the signal was too high - Made no difference, still getting this 2.5Mb/s down:

Thu, 10 Nov 2005 09:32:22 GMT
1st 128K took 421 ms = 311335 Bytes/sec = approx 2590 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 500 ms = 262144 Bytes/sec = approx 2181 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 3532 ms = 37110 Bytes/sec = approx 309 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 422 ms = 310597 Bytes/sec = approx 2584 kbits/sec

So it looks like they'll be replacing my 120 soon, well at least I hope the will. If NTL need to replace all 120 SACMs it's gonna be costly.

Weak argument. They should read their email and be up to date with what's going on BEFORE they even start to take calls, otherwise, they're just giving us yesterday's news. If a new important looking email comes in from a manager or team leader, you take the time out to read it after the current call. After all, it's important and could impact what you're going to say to the customers in your later calls.

Maybe they do dislike customers phoning and asking the same questions all the time, but maybe that's because they can't give the same answer consistantly and as a result, people have to call multiple times to get the whole story.

I'm sure that the majority would not need to call back, if they would just say if the upgrade is available in our particular region yet, or better yet, put up a web page (like this) that tells us if it's available yet.

[edit]
By the way, I worked in tech support for a number of years, so I know how those guys are probably feeling with all this. But I also know the way you get people to stop coming back to you with things like this is to keep them informed. Even if people don't fully understand the answer that they're given, they will be happy that they got an answer (At least, that was my experience).

I phoned yesterday and was told it depends on the modem i have as to whether it will work or not

As i only came back to NTL in August he said it should be ok - i got a little blue thing - not sure of make/model

while on the phone it went through
speeds were up and down for the first hour but now going fine!

Speedtests for me show:
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/sp...2f5fde78b8fe1e

my mate phoned up who lives just down the road and was told there was no way he could have it

strange thing is, he uses his service a lot more than me - their not looking at your usage before they decide if you can have it or not are they as i only use about 10-15Gb a month where as my mate uses 20Gb a week?

by the way in from the AL10 area in Herts

Thanks NTL!

my persoinal oppinon (after consulting my 5 year old assistants j/k) is that people will still phone repeatedly regardless of if there told the right thing from the start if they dont belive/want to belive it maby they should jsut be redirected automaticaly to an ansewrign machine with a continuos loop of "its not with you yet so p**s off" and leave cs and ts to get on with sorting real problems and dealing with productive clients

HI,
I tried to upgrade from the 3mb to 10mb via the NTL upgrade page and go this message...

Unable to upgrade your connection speed

We are sorry that your current package or connection speed is not appropriate for an online speed upgrade.
Please call customer support on 0800 052 2000 for further assistance with changing your service level.

I'm using a Terayon TJ210 CM in the Glasgow area (Yoker)

Does this mean that my area hasn't the 10mb yet?
I phoned CS and they say it is -slowly- getting rolled out over the next couple of months. And the CM was ok in tests for the 10mb.

I hope this hasnt been asked before.

Good post :tu: Obviously for some the word consideration or patience can be a little alien, currently I'm not sure when the upgrades will happen for us here but I'm not about to lose sleep over it as
a: it's free
b: it won't affect how I use my BB connection
c: I know that NTL take time to roll these things out

Obviously I wouldn't mind the extra speed right now but what I haven't got I can't miss :)

Grimsby btw

Just tried that approach myself, I politely asked whether it would be possible to become part of the pilot scheme on the understanding that if anything goes wrong then it is my own fault, only to be refused.
The lady then started talking about the fact that my SACM is not capable of the full 10Mb, I asked her what details she had in regards to my modem (I used to be connected through a pace STB, then Samsung STB after finally settling on the 200 SACM), she replied that she only has the MAC address, not the actual model details.

No matter how polite I was she still wouldn't upgrade me, even though I stressed that I knew that if it all went belly up it would be my fault.

Was hoping to do some testing on the Runcorn UBR (and stress test my router which is quite a few years old...ready for when things really do kick off so I can buy a new one in readiness if need be.)

Ah well. :)

It appears that many people do not believe that there could be a valid reason why they can't have the upgrade at present. It could be because their particular area is not ready for the upgrades, they may have the wrong equipment, there may be database problems, they may be on a billing system that won't allow the upgrade, etc.

If you look through this thread you will see many examples of why some can't get the upgrade and why some who have the upgrade don't get the full 10 Mbps.

People like Robin Walker (rdhw) have explained why you will be lucky to get 10 Mbps all the time (He can't achieve that and he has a 100 Mbps connection). People read that explanation but think he is wrong because Fred Bloggs has said that he has been upgraded and gets the full whack. They then post saying they have called NTL 10 times and got a different answer each time, eventually got upgraded but can only get 5 Mbps. They have then called NTL who are sending out an engineer to replace their faulty modem. It never appears to cross their mind that not getting the full whack may be down to so many users using the same speed tests at the same time and eating up either the speed test servers bandwidth or their UBR's bandwidth. What a waste of NTL staff's time and time equals cost. Guess who will pay the cost at the end of the day, one way or another?

I do agree that people need to chill out a bit over this upgrade... I phoned up and asked for the upgrade, and I got it. I wasn't about to spend all day on the phone. But if people want to phone all day long, then that's up to them. As far as i am concerned, NTL have brought this on themselves with their wholey inconsistent information. If things were clear and simple then they wouldn't be in this mess. Fact is, some people have phoned up and been told no, then phoned back and been told yes. It's a shambles, and they deserve all the grief they get.

Have to agree here, if ntl had communicated to their staff correctly then i doubt any of this would have happened, it has been far too inconsistant from the word go. Maybe ntl think their customers dont speak to each other, If I go to upgrade my speed on the speed upgrade page and it offers me 2mb or 10mb its obvious there is no 3mb anymore, so which one if i am looking for a speed increase am i going to take ?

The fact that they put out an announcement saying all their current high tier customers (3MB) would be the first to be upgraded then joe bloggs who is a 2mb customer see's that he can get it but me i pay 37.99 a month cannot seems to me a little wrong, im not sure if the 3mb first announcment came from ntl or from someone on here that i do not know but if it was from ntl how do they expect their high paying customers to feel.

All it would have taken was someone to say we are either allowing 10mb accross the board, or not allowing it period. This it seems is a simple decision to make but was never taken and now we have this....a mess.

pk1209 10-11-2005 09:51

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Seems to me one of the biggest reasons people are being refused the upgrade is because the upgrade is for new customers only, with existing 3meg customers being upgraded in December. Well I, and a few others, know this not to be true, seeing as I am an existing 3 meg customer who yesterday got upgraded to 10mb.

Also, about this 'staff not having time to read email business;' how can you expect to offer a professional service when your staff aren't even up to date. I would rather wait an extra 5 mins on the phone and get the right info, that get on quicker and be misled. It's no secret that NTL CS is held in low regard, maybe reading their emails before their shift would be a good place to start...

The is alink somewhere in this thread to another forums site, cant find it now but it has a statement from NTL regarding the whoe shooting match.
Explaining why there was confusion over 10Mb roll out. Something to do with Glasgow only to start with but word got out and people from all ove rthe country were asking to be upgraded.

WIth regard to equipment AFAIK all modems will 'work' with the 10Mb service.
SB3100 will only achive a max of 5Mb
SB4100 should get 'close' to 10Mb.
All others should be fine for 10Mb.

This was all from the ntl post..

My reckoning of why people are only getting 4-6Mb speeds is that the network isnt fully upgraded in thier area, this would be why ntl are no longer giving out the 10Mb upgrade on request. That's my guess anyway.

TBH I am happy with 5Mb its the 512 uploads that are the big improvement. More people on my CS:S server now ;-)

I thought that too i had a ambit 120 modem this morning was getting around 5mb a sec, he swapped it for a ntl 250 modem and the speed shot up to 10mb a sec all he did was change the modem, the only difference is the modem as far as both he and i could see.

Yes, the whole thing has turned into a right mess. People getting the upgrade, others being refused. Some with the upgrade getting good speeds, others not (probably because their modems and/or their part of the network can't handle the full speed yet).

this is probably the best information we have:-

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/...n-november-8th

someone at NTL needs to interface with Mick or PaulM - what happened to this idea of building better links with NTL that NTL was talking about a few months back? surely this upgrade is the ideal time to get talking. end the confusion.

I just gave CS a quick call and i was told that for the Glasgow area it wouldnt be available till Jan 2006 and that they will offer it at a discount price as its a new tier level. Believe that if you will :D

They are probably giving out a whole load of different reasons because there are a whole lot of different reasons. There can be several reasons why a particular customer can't get the upgrade and I would expect that CSR's would only give the customer one of those. The next CSR that the customer speaks to may give a different reason but it can be equally valid and doesn't mean that CS don't know what they are talking about. Much of the muddle that you perceive is only there because you don't appreciate the full complete facts about the upgrades.

Each NTL customer may have have slightly different reasons why they can or cannot have the upgrade. There is no simple and concise answer that covers every eventuality for every customer and every area.

I appreciate that, I really do. But it doesn't explain why someone can phone and ask for an upgrade and be refused, only to then phone back, and be given the upgrade by someone else. Don't know how often this has happened, but it certainly has.

I would Love to think that NTL will upgrade my 2MB line to 10 today, but I don't think they will... Are they ONLY doing 3mb upgrades atm, or if I call CS and talk all nice to them will tey switch me to 10...?

you should be able to switch up to 10mb here:

http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/tiermigration/

but it will be the £37.99 package. No one really knows who's being upgraded just now... the word lottery springs to mind.

Really, and I mean no offence, I don't understand why there is confusion? Haven't they stated via numerous sources that †˜new customersâ₠¬â„¢ would benefit first followed by existing subscribers being automatically upgraded in the near future, conditions applying (technical issues...blah...blah)

The reason you (and others) have been upgraded is no doubt due to the fact they are probably a little p***ed off with impatient customers haranguing them non-stop. I would imagine some customer service people would give in more easily then others.

Its already been said but NTL need time to all aspects of their infrastructure before rolling this out, otherwise as seen ppl pester CS for upgrades then moan when their only getting 5Mb/s... blame the modem etc. I'm just waiting for the un-capped offerings.

Don't forget not all non Ntl equipment can cope too, think my router will max at 8Mb/s.

No offence taken.. i'll talk you through my upgrade experience:

Phoned up, got through to a nice Scottish lady, and I simply asked if i could be upgraded to 10mb, she said she had to go and check, and when she came back she said she could do it, albeit after what seemed a little confusion on her part. There was no pressure by me, she simply said that was fine, and told me to go reboot my modem and it should be on 10mb. I did that, but i was still on 3 after doing a few checks, so i phoned back. Got through to a guy in Swansea an explained what had just happened. He said he would fix it for me there and then, then gave me his name so if there was any trouble i knew who to ask for. Again, no pressure or attitude on my part. The guy confirmed that today was the start of the rollout, and confirmed that "i was his first one today." I thanked him, and rebooted modem, and there it was, a 10mb line.

I was an existing 3mb customer, and like i say, at no point did i get angry or put pressure on them, and likewise, the CS people I spoke to were very polite, and certainly did not seem at all annoyed at my asking to be upgraded.

The following are capable of 10Mb now:
ntl 250 (blue Ambit manufactured modem)
ntl 200 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)

The following could be capable of 10Mb, but require a firmware upgrade:
ntl:home 120 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)

The following are not capable of 10Mb:
ntl:home 100 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)
Terayon Terajet 210
Motorola Surfboard 3100/4100
3com Tailfin
3com CMX
All Pace STBs

Testing has not completed on the Samsung STBs, however current results suggest around 8-9Mb may be possible. Higher speeds may be achieved with an upgrade to the uBR - but this has yet to be confirmed.

PLEASE do not call Customer Services/Faults/Technical Support requesting an upgrade for your Cable Modem. Technical Support cannot change your speed, and have been told not to send engineers for customers who are not receiving the full 10Mb downstream speed unless there are other factors involved.

If your modem requires an upgrade to receive the 10Mb service, ntl will contact you to advise you what to do.

i wish you'd tell tech support this then jimbo coz they reckon the terayon tj210 can handle 38 megs.
personally i don't believe them but what can you do if they won't change there modems your stuck.

There is some confusion there... The Terajet can theoretically handle 38Mbps via DOCSIS on the CATV port, but cannot process that much data.

Aha, a good answer, so my Ntl Home:120 might be able to do 10meg, with a firmware upgrade, any idea if/when that'll happen, thanks :-)

*UPDATE*

I was on 2meg when i called the lady this morning and was told that 10meg wasnt available in my area (renfrew) untill Jan 2006....Being an impatient sod i went onto the tier migration page and the "up to 10meg" option was present...i though what the hell and upgraded...if it was only 3meg i could at least downgrade back to 2 meg the next month. Quick reboot of the modem and i was on the 10meg service. I havent had the full 10meg yet but the highest i've had is 950kb/s....And..heres the good part...My modem is the old Terayon one.

Strange but true.

:mis: I would be in heaven If I got speeds like that, Thats 9mb your getting, The best I've had is 420Kb/s. But mostly 380kb/s.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

All these people saying it may not be available in you area are doing my head in... According to Sales if my house was a house share I could have an engineer in asap and install 10meg. But CS are refusing to upgrade me... Whats the point, I thought the press release stated that existing 3Mb customers were going to be first inline for the 10Mb service. I wouldn't mind even if it wasn't running at full speed, I just want to be ready for what ever problems may arise between now and the automatic upgrades.

Sorry to go off topic, I just got my cable to change over to ethernet, from USB, is there anything special i have to do before the change over? I'm guessing there's a way of getting rid of the USB connection first, and it's not just a matter of taking out the USB cable, and putting in the ethernet one?

I'm using a patch cable, with RJ45 connectors, straight to the motherboard which has 10/100/1000mb lan.

I have the surfboard 3100 and this achieves around half the mb speed.
Spoke to CS & then Faults department who does in fact support 10mb. its just the early roll out period causing the lower speed at present.

We shall see.
