Looked more like Horizon than Tivo.

Interesting as can you divulge any more info.

Not really much more to say, took the usual household demographic questions, asked what package I was on then then described a “new TV box” would I be interested and how much would I be willing to pay.

It had a couple of sample pictures of the guide and it looked like Horizon. They also specifically mentioned seamlessly continuing a recording on another box or on an app which is a Horizon 4 feature.

It asked if I’d pay a one off fee, how much then suggested £49.95 and £54.95.

That's not surprising, as the Horizon UI is supposed to be downloaded to our V6s later this year according to rumours.

Thanks for the information, jfman.

The channel has been removed from Sony's site:

And looks like it's in the process of getting removed from the True Channels site too:

So, looks like the channel is getting axed by Sony. Perhaps they might axe the whole "True" brand??

At the end of June True Crime will be closing on Sky and Virgin and will be temporarily suspended for an indefinite period on Freeview.

Doubt they'd axe the whole True brand. True Crime may have woeful ratings (0.03 last month) but True Entertainment and True Movies are much more popular, 0.25 and 0.26 respectively last month.

You're probably right, but considering Sony is a heavyweight in tv shows, its tv channels underperform, not helped by all their different brands. Also, most Sony shows aren't on Sony's channels - yet.

After I wrote what I did earlier I found this about the other two True channels with regards to Freeview and other platforms.

Quote:

On 27th June True Entertainment will move from channel number 61 to channel number 48 and True Movies will move from Freeview channel number 62 to channel number 50. Both channels will only broadcast on Freeview in selected areas. You may have to retune to make these changes.

True Entertainment will continue to be available on Sky 179 Freesat 142 Virgin 189.

True Movies will continue to be available on Sky 319 Freesat 303 Virgin 424.

The other is an HD stream with a Sky Cinema logo on its screengrab.

Showing on Tsid13/C047 on Digital Bit Rate website.

Today that HD stream that had the Sky Cinema logo on the screengrab now has a ITV screen for Beecham House. The other HD stream still is showing a Virgin Media Preview.

Tsid104/C059 has a lone HD channel on it, ITV Wales HD in the region DigitalBitRate covers, has done for a wee while. I think it's possible this is just going to be moving multiplexes.

If that assumption is correct that just leaves the one seemingly showing a HD version of the Virgin Media Preview channel. I can't see VM using space on their network for an HD version, so all I can assume is it's a temporary placeholder. Maybe someone else has an idea.

That website is hopelessly out of date. it's just a coincidence that True Crime isn't listed. It still lists the music channels that were sold last year, and TruTV.

A) Own by NBCUniversal International Networks?
CNBC HD
E! HD

B) Own by Sky plc?
Sky Atlantic HD
Sky Sports Racing HD

C) Own by Turner Broadcasting System Europe Limited (WarnerMedia)?

They are indeed - 2019 looks like being a fairly good year for VM viewers. The position now in relation to #3 of this thread is as follows:

Launched already

- Starzplay
- Sky Sports Racing

Definite launches confirmed by Virgin Media

- Amazon Prime (summer 2019)

Possible launches rumoured or likely but not yet confirmed

- Sky Atlantic (expected summer 2019)
- Sky UHD content (expected summer 2019)
- Disney + (expected early 2020 now)
- New Horizon UI (possibly late 2019 or 2020)

Predicted but no positive rumours or announcements to date

- Insight
- Universe 4K

Not likely this year

- AMC (although this material will be available on PPV when Prime launches).

And who knows if there are some more surprises awaiting!

About the Horizon platform

Quote:

‘Horizon 4 RDK’ is the next generation Liberty Global TV platform being implemented for Virgin Media and across other Liberty territories. Once in place, it is intended that all new TV deployments will be on this platform. ‘Horizon’ is being designed to allow us to roll out updates on a regular basis, enabling Virgin Media to respond to customer needs and market changes in a much more agile way.
Product launch timeline

Quote:

In order to test the efficacy of the new platform, Virgin Media plans to undertake a trial ‘controlled launch’ of the Horizon platform in the second half of 2019. This means the Horizon platform will be available to a limited number of customers. In our current product roadmap, Virgin Media will aim to deliver all of the four features on the platform in the second half of 2020.
This is a partial response to an Ofcom Initiative which includes Sky, Freeview, BT etc to make the user experience for disabled customers simpler.

Haven't had a chance to watch the two you added later at the bottom, and it's a shame I don't understand what is being said. I had seen photos before but I thought they had distorted the box...but it is a thinner and wider version of the V6 design.

The interface looked slick in the video I have had a chance to watch, but I can't say I was particularly impressed. Seemed slickness for slickness sake rather than intuitive/logical.

Horizon 25-06-2019 18:13

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

Yep, it's pretty much the V6 box but with the hard drive removed. Somebody yesterday said there would be a new box, but I'm sure the V6 will be Horizon 4 compatible. And yes the interface looks slick.

On one of the links is a Dutch comparison between the old Horizon 3 box and interface and the new one, it's worth watching too.

Found this video with a guy separating the 2 halves of the V6 box (which I am not condoning).
Essentially its is 2 boxes in one!, the top half appears to be very similar to Liberty's Horizon 4 box which would connect to the cloud for recorded content and the bottom connected half only contains the hard drive for use by current UK V6 customers.

Given some people just want cable TV and not broadband, I wonder whether VM will create a version with a modem so that they can eventually phase out their original Tivos, which are only being kept around for that purpose.

So the V6 is exactly the same as Liberty's other Horizon 4 boxes, just they've added the hard drive as a extra while VM use tivo. Clever.

It doesn't look like as all the equipment has been standardised with the Connect box (superhub3) being the router/modem box.

That would be more likely if Sony launched a new channel. That deal would have included True Crime which is no longer going to be provided, so a replacement, especially an existing channel could be slotted in to hold up Sony's end of the deal e.g. if it was for X number of channels.

I can see True Entertainment+1 moving up to 212 in place of True Crime if nothing else. Given VM has had the pop-up channel Pop Power in the past I can see Pop Max filling the gap (though obviously not the EPG position).

Can't say i've ever heard it using a fan, perhaps it's simply not utilised, but there to start using if boxes started overheating if the vents proved to be insufficient??

The older Tivos don't contain a fan. The V6 does, as I mentioned here
https://www.cableforum.uk/board/show...&postcount=354

Still don't let you cat sleep on it though. The fur clogs the fan.

If it's in a bedroom, it's noticeable/ irritating imo. However the box can be hidden away in a drawer /cupboard as the RC does not need line of sight, which works for me.

Personally the noise I hear from the box is the hard drive spinning up etc, rather than the fan. So once it's running I tend to tune it out as it's a (mostly) constant noise.

I always thought it was the hard drive too.

The new Channel Guide PDFs for June are now available, updated to reflect the Mixit and Maxit packages, and the Personal Picks, in addition to the existing Player, Mix, Fun and Full House packages... there a lot of columns!

There is also a helpful PDF showing which channels are included in each of the Personal Picks add-ons:

The Personal Picks one again makes interesting omissions. The Comcast owned channels all only have their SD versions included. I've said it before, but this suggests (to me, it's just my interpretation) that negotiations between VM and Comcast companies are going to include HD swaps.

---------- Post added at 12:34 ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 ----------

Having said that, I just looked at the Channel Guides and the use (or not) of the + in columns suggests I may be wrong, and the Comcast companies are just doing things differently.

Interesting, I'm not sure if it states the reason for taking it apart (I was hoping it was to insert a larger disk), if it did I must have missed it.

The disk appears to be a laptop sized one rather than the standard pc type.

Or if it's just Good Omens you're interested in, it was originally a BBC production that Amazon joined, so wait until later in the year and watch it on BBC2.

This is the first change since the UKTV split.

This already launched in Germany a few weeks ago, so Discovery is clearly rolling this channel out across its other markets.

And talking of Home and Garden, Britbox is launching its own version too:

Yes it's currently the latter, all of Comcast's HD variants (Sky One HD, Sky Witness HD, Sky Arts HD, Sky News HD, Sky Sports News HD, Sky Sports Mix HD, Universal HD and SYFY HD) are included in the Maxit package not the Personal Picks, but that might change in the future.

Given Sony had several very similar crime channels it's basically a consolidation and almost could be argued it is basically True Crime with Sony branding once the drama is gone. Sony should never have change Sony Entertainment Television into Sony Crime. It was a much better channel when they had sitcoms, dramas and films a few years back.

Pluto was bought by Channel 5's parent company recently so it seems fairly logical.

That's quite interesting. I'm guessing if cloud recording never happens, this would be a quick fix for Virgin to upgrade the storage in the V6 without totally taking it to bits. If the HD prices drop even more, book an appointment, engineer turns up with larger HD already fitted in the bottom half and job done in 10 mins.

Sony is a interesting one. They are a major producer of content, including many British shows, yet their streaming service Crackle failed to take off in the UK when they launched and it was closed five years ago.

If and when each media company keeps its own content for its own streaming services and channels, I expect we'll hear a lot more from Sony again in the future, especially when, as I expect, they merge with some other media company.

Sony had a UK Animé on-demand service that closed a year or two ago. I don't recall Crackle launching over here.

Maybe Sony will end up being a major supplier to the likes of Netflix when all the other suppliers launch their own services and withdraw their content to fill them. There will be a content gap to fill once the others remove shows. The likes of Netflix will want more content from those that aren't big enough to have their own service, they can't produce it all themselves.

The Together news is probably Freeview-only, that it has got a slot on a main multiplex.

However if they were clever they might have done something that will be beneficial to them on Freeview, Sky and Virgin Media. Basically they might have bought True Crime from Sony. This would mean they would get a better channel number on those 3 platforms.

Freeview 89 | Sky 194 | Virgin 269 would become
Freeview 68 | Sky 180 | Virgin 212

You'll be saying "but True Crime closed..."

On the Freeview Service Status page though True Crime and its +1 are listed under "Channels going off air temporarily".

An employee in a call centre isn’t going to have sensitive data about a future launch more than a few hours before it actually happens.

But the broadcaster cant sell their EPG Channel number on Virgin Media.

Only Virgin can give them out.

So True Entertainment +1 may move to Channel 212 if Sony want it to.

True but they would be selling the channel and the channel license, which is how they'd get the move on Freeview too within Freeview's rules, as you can't sell channel numbers on Freeview either. Freesports got its Freeview channel number by buying a shopping channel.

I'm actually expecting TE+1 to move up to 212, I just mentioned the other option as a possibility. There are plenty of gaps in the early 200s in the VM EPG though, so I wouldn't be surprised if they get a better VM number.

You would have thought that, wouldn't you, but time and again it has become apparent that Virgin are very slow to update their customer services staff.

Virgin media staff that answer the phones will be the last people to find out no doubt. That's not having a go at the staff, it's just usually the case, with a few when it eventually does come (if ever) still denying that Virgin had it.

It won't be arriving on Virgin Media. Info i've seen suggests that it is a exclusive deal with BT that's been done for Atlantic via Nowtv no other platforms are on that document as of to date.

I doubt very much that VM will get Now TV. If we get Atlantic at all, it will be as a live channel. VM will have a separate deal with Sky.

Possible, but other channels in the combined portfolio are likely to be closed before Universal in my opinion. Sky2 and Real Lives for instance.

I do find that procedurals comment in the article odd. Universal shows just as many procedurals. I'd say it was more the subject matter of Chicago Med that is relevant, Sky Witness shows a wider array of subjects, and in particular is home to fellow medical show Grey's Anatomy. Universal is pretty much all police crime dramas these days, most of its schedule is the various Law & Order franchises.

Possibly yes or they might evolve it into a Universal movies channel?

I haven't looked myself but others are commenting that Sky Boxsets has other Universal shows listed as Sky Witness.

The only other one is Law and Order SVU , Sky Witness are airing Dick Wolf FBI next month which is apparently going to crossover with Law and Order SVU sometime next season.
