French Open tennis and (I believe) Champions League Final were broadcast with HDR. And the various iPlayer UHD events were either all or mostly with HDR HLG as I understand it. A quick web search brings up many articles.

Unless you were specifically meaning a channel there 365/6 days a year.

I appreciate that but Virgin did state that UHD & HDR (HLG) was available on their iPlayer app for Wimbledon Centre Court.

Indeed I was referring to broadcast channels.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

It definatly works on the V6 as the tv is displaying that the signal is HLG.

But a couple of times I have had to exit and restart it to switch to HLG - maybe depending on demand at the BBC's servers.

Does Netflix go HDR on your V6?

I've tried exit and restart but to no avail. Yes, HDR does work on Netflix, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's not working.

ozsat 07-07-2019 14:17

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

It may be you tv is not compatible with the HLG service - or still needs a further menu change.

Or it could be simply the HLG does not work on your TV via HDMI.

There is a test stream in the Beta area on iPlayer to check HLG.

One setting gives UHD Planet Earth without HLG - the other is FA Cup football in UHD with HLG.

My mistake, the Netflix app on the V6 - HDR is not working. Just about to try the UHD loop on iPlayer.

---------- Post added at 15:08 ---------- Previous post was at 15:03 ----------

The UHD loop won't work, it come up with an error message.

ozsat 07-07-2019 15:16

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

What make/model is the tv? And which HDMI port are you using?

Seems some Samsungs only do HDR via limited HDMI inputs - not all of them.

It's an LG OLED55E6V and the V6 is plugged into HDMI2.

Ok, further investigations and tests . . . I've now got HDR working on V6 Netflix - another setting on the LG TV video settings (I really should have known about this one). So, waiting until tomorrow to see if it works on the iPlayer, Wimbledon Centre Court.

Thanks to all who helped.

Just wondering if anyone who CAN view the UHD Wimbledon streams have a TV that is NOT on this compatible device list but are able to view the UHD via the V6 iplayer?

I have a Samsung KS9000 and i can view the UHD feed via the V6 iplayer app but not via the built in TV iplayer app.

I didn't realise that list showed the V6 and other devices that can view HLG UHD streams, I thought it was just TVs so that explains things.

FYI This sorted out my sound and picture cut out problem. One other thing I have noticed though,on my AV amp the audio readout flickers between Pro-logic and Dolby Digital on the HD channels,if I stream media from my computer or Netflix or Amazon it is rock steady on DD.Any ideas on what can cause this?

Just a heads up for anyone that doesn't have a V6 or compatible TV for HLG streaming content.

Amazon are currently selling the Fire Stick 4K for only £24.99(prime day) 50% off, it is a no brainer if you need something like this as it does so much more.

BT Sport Ultimate will be showing 52 Premier League games and a selection of Champions League and Europa League games at 50 frames per second in 4K Ultra HD, HDR and with Dolby Atmos.

The 1st match on the new channel will be this afternoon with the FA Community Shield match between Liverpool and Manchester City

New channel? I thought it was just a rebranding of the existing 4K channel?

Its more of a relaunch to bring their 'technical' quality stuff all together under one name.
But the stuff is all spread around different platforms.
HDR is only on streaming - Dolby Atmos seems to be only on linear.

No, that's about it, but I think we are doing rather well for UHD, and when the Sky UHD content comes along next year, that will be about as much as there is available.

The Virgin Media UHD channel is only on during the evenings, but the content is excellent. No ads on there, either!

Bit useless for those who have already watched it. At least with "Seven Worlds, One Planet", you could wait until the episode became available in 4K, and watch it then.

How do we find what content is available in 4K? Nothing appears to say that "Dracula" was available on iPlayer in 4K, until you watch it. Then iPlayer shows it's in "UHD".

I can understand Sky wanting the UHD for sports to have the start coincide with the start of a new football season, but the non-sports UHD doesn't have to wait.

Sky seem to like to keep a constant stream of new services/announcements, rather than a splurge all at once, so I wouldn't be surprised if something comes soon. Just not all of it.

It won't be until the UHD standalone subscription gets rolled-out to Sky's own customers. I suspect this is so Virgin need to charge extra for Sky Sports UHD like they do for Sky Sports HD.

As far as I am aware, yes.

The UHD sports feed has to be accessed via the red/green button, but they were there last time I heard.
This has been in place for football and F1, it may have branched out to golf, but I'm not 100% sure

Oh, I don't know about a specific UHD channel. I guess that may come in the future.

I wasn't sure if Virgin would use the same approach as Sky using the red button or have a dedicated UHD channel for each.

Guess it makes sense after typing it to adopt the red button approach for now. Otherwise they may need a UHD channel for each sports channel that has UHD available.

I wasn't sure if Virgin would use the same approach as Sky using the red button or have a dedicated UHD channel for each.

Guess it makes sense after typing it to adopt the red button approach for now. Otherwise they may need a UHD channel for each sports channel that has UHD available.

The wording, as I recall, wasn't specific, but gave me impression there would be a broadcast element and maybe they were simply waiting for Sky to launch it. But perfectly easy that I misinterpreted it. :D

I'd think Sky would just launch one movie channel and one sports channel and the rest would be streaming, so maybe Sky Cinema Premiere UHD and Sky Sports Main Event UHD. That has been what I was expecting.

I don't actually mind how they do it :D:D

Your suggestion makes sense though

I imagine that because of Covid-19, the Sky UHD/4K channels will now launch in September in line with the launch of the new Premier League season.

I think it is more likely to be introduced when the existing contractual arrangements end, which I think is August.

They out to be able to build a channel with live sport concerts etc then filling in between with docs and films.

Lack of UHD content is stopping me getting a UHD tv.

Do you not have any other 4K devices like game consoles and Amazon Fire Sticks?

I would not wait for 4K content on broadcast TV when you can get far more 4K content by other means, but when you do get one don't get a cheap £400 one as the difference will be night and day.

Free 4K on YouTube for instance. There is some beautiful nature stuff on there.

Thanks for the advice, I don't use any of the sources you suggest - so 4K content needs to come from normal sources.

Disappointingly, football has been available on sky for some time but as ever Virgin are slow to supply

I presume you mean football in UHD. We do, of course have BT Sport Ultimate which provides football in UHD. The Sky stuff should arrive in time for the next season.

Maybe it was only talk on this forum last summer then?

Trouble with this forum is there is a lot of speculation posted under threads such as changes which imply facts.

Rather than tack it onto these types of thread it would be better to start a speculation type thread

The only question has been about when in 2020, which is not clear to this day.

The blurb says:

As part of the extended deal, Sky’s stellar line up of entertainment, cinema and sports channels will continue to be available on Virgin Media’s TV platform, with Virgin customers set to enjoy new Ultra HD linear and additional video-on-demand content from Sky next year.

That sounds pretty concrete to me.
