I've just received my weekly 'don't miss' email from Virgin. On the click through link that promotes Sky Cinema it goes on about the new improved sound and picture and then says movies in Ultra HD by the end of the year. One of our usual Virgin slip ups, or an element of truth/hope there?

Yes l have just received the same email so one can only hope its not one of those regular slip ups.

Hopefully not a mistake. Would be great to get some 4K/UHD content arrive as the new TiVo launches.

I haven't got a 4K/UHD tv just yet, but the prices are falling pretty quickly. Hopefully the pricing for the new Tivo box isn't too extreme to put people off getting one.

I saw it too
"Sky Movies customers can now kick back and enjoy more of the latest blockbusters than any other subscription service. And that’s not even the half of it! You’ll get a new movie premiere every single day, over 1,000 films to choose from on demand, new and improved HD as standard, sound closer to the cinema… (draw breath)… a chance to broaden your horizons with World Cinema Wednesday and, to give you even more to look forward to, Ultra HD films by the end of the year!"

It isn't :) i've already stated before the new tivo will be here by end of the year.
But hey ho MB is the only one in the know apparantly.

... And those Ultra HD films will either be via the Netflix app or paid for On Demand from the movie store.

Believe you totally on the new box, my doubt is Sky giving us access to the new content.

Are you able to say if they are competitive with Sky's prices for their new box?

Bay TV Swansea has started broadcasting a promo on Freeview.

They will not be going onto satellite, but will this be coming to VM?

Are the other Bay TV channels eg Liverpool on cable?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Maybe I used the wrong wording, but you know I meant cheaper lol

Because VM still own the boxes, does that have an influence on the pricing? I wonder if Sky have done a similar thing with their new boxes and followed VM's model or kept it so Sky's customers own the boxes.

Sky Q follows the included in your subscription model:

Quote:

Sky Q kit loaned to you at no cost and must be returned at end relevant subscription. Connect to TV using HDMI cable (supplied) or AV cable (not supplied). You own the Sky dish.

Does the "at no cost" mean there is no monthly fee like there is on the Tivo and HD boxes?

Could be interesting if there is no monthly fee for the new Tivo, but I cannot see that happening. ;)

Would be great if VM did get the UHD movies, I need a UHD tv first though haha

It's changed to Sky Cinema on the App.

Season 6 of Justified started last night on Spike and the episode can be seen on Virgin catch-up.

Apparently, they've accidentally added shows from Spike before then swiftly realised and pulled them, so I suggest anyone interested acts fast.

Motors TV has unexpectedly returned to VM on EPG number 545.

However, I am not hopeful that this will be permanent.

Yes, I've given it a try and I can confirm the audio is much improved. More dynamic explosions and dialogue is clearer as well.

Just tried today's premiere Mission Impossible Rogue Nation via On Demand and the audio is excellent hopefully we'll see this on all the new titles added.

Before the audio had very little punch in my opinion and was generally poor so I'm happy to see this improvement.

The Blu-Ray of that film has Dolby Atmos and on my Atmos system it was truly amazing.
Some streaming apps now offer Atmos sound, obviously not at the bit rates of Blu-Ray or 4K UHD Blu-Ray but it can still sound pretty awesome, hopefully Sky will introduce it to their service.

Agreed Blu Ray audio is generally excellent my current kit isn't capable of Atmos however I may upgrade in the future.

I read a while back that Sky were looking to introduce Atmos in the future so who knows we could well see it.

At the moment I'm just happy that the audio has improved as let's be honest it was generally poor before.

Tuesdays are also high on the number of channels launches day.

We found bad days are Mondays and Sundays (5%).

We have seen some channels launch on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (20%).

But about 75% of channels launches happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Virgin Media, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liberty Global, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with ITV plc to acquire UTV Ireland, the nation’s newest free-to-air commercial broadcaster, for a purchase price of €10 million. The agreement also includes a comprehensive 10 year output deal for Ireland for ITV produced programming. The purchase price is expected to be funded through existing liquidity.

Justified being added to Virgin Media UK mean nothing.

Virgin Media was broadcasting BBC ALBA on Virgin on Demand for about 24 months before BBC ALBA did launch on Virgin Media.

In fairness to Richard, Alba is a very small-audience PSB. Spike is a commercial channel with some pricey content which I don't think it would let VM have access to without a robust deal in place.

-Arabic Hafla
-Fox News Channel
-NDTV India
-NDTV Spice
-That's Solent

Are all testing on Virgin Media UK.

Agreed, does seem strange that Spike would launch straight away whilst every other channel has to test for weeks first.

Channel 5 and Viacom have a track record of replacing existing channels with new ones. Maybe they are considering replacing, say, 5USA +1 with Spike???

Every new channel is just a rumour until it launches. There's no guarantee that a test will morph into a launch.

I never understand why channels "test" anyway. Surely you click a button the channel goes live if it doesn't go live you check what's wrong. Rather than hundreds of hours of testing

"Alright Jim is it still working?"
"Yeah Dan it is"
"Excellent"
"Shall we launch the channel?"
"Nah keep testing"
"But I said its working Dan"
"Yeah I know"
"..."

Presumably there's so many combinations of equipment and network that something that works in one area on one type of equipment may not work on another. I suspect that the testing goes on in parallel with negotiations hence some channels test but don't launch.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

It's probably less about whether the channel itself it working, but whether the channel is properly integrated into the management systems e.g. if it's in a certain pack, and that pack is downgraded or suspended is the channel removed from being available. Do the EPG listings show correctly on all the STBs.

spiderplant 12-07-2016 15:12

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Much of what gets called "testing" on this forum actually isn't. Services can be hidden from the EPG for many reasons

The free BT Sport with broadband offer ends in August so no more BT Sport lite packages that include BTS1 only. So content can go on any channel. Expect to see CL games on BT Sport 1, so no need for a Europe channel.

You can stream that through the website :)

It does have some funny programs on though. I was watching it at Easter and the reporter was at this big Easter gathering, interviewing women dressed as chicks and stuff, all really light hearted.

Just before they ended the piece, the studio said 'So how is security there?'

ha ha, lulling me into thinking it was a proper news channel :)

This deal means that Virgin Media now have the rights to the soaps such as Cornation Street and Emmerdale for the next ten years. Other ITV Studio content is included in the deal.

Not looking good for UTV Ireland as it now looks like all ITV content will be moved over to TV3 and rumours suggest that Virgin Media might close UTV Ireland.

We would not go for 5USA +1 for axe on Virgin Media UK.

Our money would be on Channel 5 + 24 being axe on all networks and it slot being use for:

Sky - Spike +1
Freeview - 5USA +1 (UK Wide) with 5Star +1 launching on Freeview HD
Virgin Media UK - Spike

I'm expecting it to be just part of the Sky Sports package as I get the impression it's replacing one of the current Sky Sports Channels, Either Sky Sports 5 or SKY Sports F1

However if it's on XL then happy days :-) although would worry that it could be a precursor to VM dropping BT Sport from XL.

AFAIK this is a simulcast of any of the skysports channels and its launch is partly guided by the BT sports free, there will be no additional content on this that wont be available on any of the current skysports offerings at that time i.e. if skysports is showing football then it will be exactly as on skysports 1, I believe they do this sometimes with F1 and its on sky one

As its a lure channel to get people to pay for skysports channels I honestly think it will be available to all VM from M upwards IMO

lt would be suicidal if Virgin took BT Sports out of the XL pack as without it there there would be a considerable loss of customers who subscribe to it for that one reason and Virgin ain't that stupid in my opinion.

Sky have already said that it won't be a premium channel as it's intention is to promote Sky Sports; for this reason i'm not surprised that it will be on VM.

M would be nice, but I bet it will be in M+.

Wasn't aware that it would be a simulcast, I thought that it would be a pick and mix type thing.

I guess this will mean the end of free Sky Sports days, hopefully this will lead to more free Sky Movies weekends :)

I'm just trying not to build hopes up too much. If I expect the worse then everything else is a bonus

However nice to dream that with XL next year we'll have 52 PL games and 10 Championship matches* along with most of the European football, including some Spainish.

* based on the rumour that Mix will show 10 PL and 10 Championship matches per season.
