I ask because, in my experience, this catch all term is often used by industry (not just TV channels) as a cover up for incompetence or to mask more serious problems. I remember when Pricedrop/Bid TV broadcast that they just had a few "technical problems", before going off air for good! Another example is of a former competitor of ours that didn't open one weekend as they couldn't afford to buy any stock to sell, but, of course, the notice on the door referred to the reason as "technical issues" :D |

If such a channel launched this year, we could have a lot of older HBO material, and there must be quite a lot of this as they have been broadcasting in the States for many years. Added to this, we would have the prospect of getting those SA programmes we've been hankering for in the near future - some of them like Treme may be available immediately. Game of Thrones, however, may still be about two years off before we can get it if an HBO channel/streaming service is what is coming. It would certainly explain why VM have still not agreed with Sky to launch SA on cable. This was looking like a very real prospect eight or nine months ago, when both sides were reported as being much more realistic about the situation. |

As I stated earlier, I agree with your thoughts and I would not be surprised to see HBO content become available via some form of monthly subscription. HBO really have Sky over a barrel now, if Sky want exclusive first run TV shows, they have to dance to HBO's tune. Either way, I am still not overly bothered by the content SA show. GOT has never done it for me, although I am getting pressured by the current squeeze to give it another go.:(. We have compromised and I have downloaded a sample of the book on me Kindle.:). |

I hope VM get something for their customers who want the content though. I would hate for people on here to get their hopes up of possibly getting SA content on VM, only for it never to arrive. I figured I would offer a bit of balance in case they do not. In addition to linear broadcast, the output deal supports a broad range of multiplatform rights, ensuring HBO content will continue to be available live and on demand not just on TV, but online and on mobile through Sky Go. Sky Atlantic is also available live and on demand through NOW TV, Sky's new internet TV service. As I say, I agree with your idea and if I remember correctly, I seem to recall news of HBO doing a deal with Amazon in the states a few days ago regarding their back catalouge. IF they did (happy to be corrected if they did not) it would suggest it could easily happen over here.:) |

Sirius C Forum Member Join Date: Nov 2013 Posts: 141 There seems to be a bit of cynicism in another place as to the accuracy of my post regarding Virgin squeezing 4 HD channels into a multiplex, as opposed to 3 previously. Someone has suggested Virgin have been doing this since "2011" and cited a poll indicating that channels are scoring highly in quality as perceived by the viewer. Well... I got bored and decided to check it out in closer detail. Now, a poll that predates BBC3/4, BT Sport 1 and 2 HD among other channels that have launched since shouldn't really be the benchmark in my view. It is questionable if the channels cited as being squeezed in actually shared with another 3 back then. Of the multiplexes carrying HD channels in my area 50 per cent have 3 HD channels, and 2 only have 2 HD channels (one of which is mixed with SD local variant of BBC/ITV). I would contest that 4 channels per multiplex is not the norm, and would not have been when the poll was conducted. Edit: I should point out I'm not hinting that Virgin have capacity issues in the medium/longer term. I have posted endlessly in the past about this that Virgin (well, actually it predates that name) would use analogue shutdown, 256 QAM and then could switch to MPEG4. It'd be easy to convert say, HD premiums and swap out old SA V+ boxes for affected customers in favour of Samsung V+ (if they still have any) or Tivos. Then move onto all HD channels and effectively double the amount of HD capacity on the platform. The V+HD, Samsung V+ and TiVo all support MPEG4. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2
It must be possible for them to do a box swap, Sky are currently refusing to allow Premium HD channels to work on their old Thompson HD boxes, anybody who complains is offered a new box if they sign a 12 month contract, bring on the mpeg4 i say.

It is true that Sky has the rights to the back catalogue of HBO shows, but my point is that it is only the first run stuff that is exclusive to Sky. I'm not saying anything is going to happen. I am merely pointing out what has been reported, and I must say that I would be surprised if Liberty Global had not already worked out an alternative means of getting HBO shows to us. Belated, maybe, but better late than never. ---------- Post added at 12:48 ---------- Previous post was at 12:47 ---------- Quote:

That to me just means any new HBO show will be on Sky it doesn't mean older shows can go else where. Sky usually tend to by both free to air and pay TV rights, you will not see HBO shows (on TV) anywhere other then Atlantic unless there is a existing deal in place for a show, example True Blood.

There are varying references to this deal - some say that Sky has exclusive access to the HBO catalogue but many talk about 'new' or 'first run' shows. It is all a little ambiguous at the moment so until we hear something a bit more categorical, I guess we will just have to hope in the meantime. |

I have heard (in the VM store in Oxford Street, London) that the sports channels move around on Tuesday 3rd June and Sky Sports 3,4 & F1 in HD will appear on Thursday 5th June. Placeholders will also appear on the Tuesday. :)
They did not have any concrete info about dates but expect that Sky Sports News HD, Sky News HD, NatGeoWild HD, CI HD, History HD, Universal HD and the Disney channels in HD will appear sooner rather than later. :) |

Might not be VM's fault, SKY might only allow them to broadcast from a certain date. Thinking about it, when did the contract end before this negotiation happened? Maybe the channels won't launch until that contract has expired.
