I shall not be paying extra for BT Sports , its not worth it to me for a few extra football games. ESPN / America is a shdow of its former self so unless its in the xl pack you can count me out. I shall get my fix of American sports via other sources eg MLB game pass.

Virgin will not do that but maybe put prices on hold for some years.

Or they may reuse the money save on ESPN being on XL (Rumours at £2.50 per viewer) on getting new deal with other broadcasters signed.

See my 'Virgin TV' link for more info on what may come it do sign deals with other broadcasters.

I did not have Live SPL football in my house for 2/3 years before Setanta Sports joined the XL Package so I will not be paying any more for 30 SPL and 10 Rangers games when you can see the latest results on BBC Sport via Virgin on Demand or Sky Sports News.

Well I can't see many xl TV customers paying £10 a months extra for the same amount / tier of games they have been getting inclusive for the last few years.

Ps like I have Said previous the reason I havnt entered into any new contract recently is till I know what the score is regarding next seasons sports broadcasts, although it would be a bit of messing changing to sky I havnt ruled it out, but what if sky world customers get bt sports inclusive in return for bt customers getting sports 1-4 in HD, that would be a virgin killer wouldn't it.

£10 is £10 more than at the moment though. So either way, it's not a good situation.

I might be wrong but I thought Espn had 23 games and BT have 38 which includes some of the top tier games?

Very true. Setanta Sports, and ESPN during their first year, had 46 Premiership games. None first pick of course but still 8 games better off than BT will be able to offer.

It's not all about the football though, BT have some decent rugby games now. I wonder how many people (not just on this forum) just have SS simply for the rugby? My dad likes the rugby, and like me, is indifferent to "modern" football and rarely watches it. I doubt he will keep SS and £10 for BT sports would be a much better option for him. The only thing that may mean he keeps SS will be the Ashes in the summer.
Again, I doubt BT will do a deal like you suggest. No-one would join BT because they would probably already have SS1-4HD on Sky and will get free BT sports. BT customers would probably have to pay more for SS1-4HD anyway

People need to wait for the pricing announcement believed to be this week rather than assuming , we honestly don't know how this will impact subscribers of each platform remember if BT alienate subscribers of both VM and Sky their venture into sports could fall at the first fence.

There ain't a hope in hell of its being free though MM, which as pointed out means even more to pay regardless of what price it is.

We will probably change to Sky. We are paying a lot at the moment and it's not really great value considering our main priority is Sports, in fact we only watch sports on top of terrestrial.

It works out cheaper at Sky for the same package, minus ESPN so as soon as we lose ESPN, Sky becomes cheaper, and that's with all HD channels.

I won't mind paying £5.00 for a pacakge including BT THREE channel. BUT, l cannot see VM going for that.

The biggest problem with VM is that again, they will want BT on the cheap. EVEN though we will end up payiong for it.

I agree James , but I would imagine all platforms will be forced to review their packages on the back of this news. ESPN free in XL has represented excellent value for VM subscribers should that change it will be harder sell however its still possible VM could negotiate a decent deal and rejig their collections to reflect this.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

What's noticeable is that people are preparing to switch to Sky to get BT Sports. Not many seem to be considering switching to BT!

What's becoming clearer, in my opinion, is that BT don't have a product that will drive subscriptions to their platform in the way that Sky do. Who knows, perhaps BT will need to spend a year or two getting people to see the value in their Sport offering, and the only way they'll do that is by getting as many people as possible to see it. We'll see, but having spent so much on so little, BT must be preparing to play the long game.

Good points.

I remember when Boxnation introduced the £10.00 registration fee for SKY customers prior to Haye Vs. Chisora. I got into a very interesting conversation with someone in Boxnations customer service team. I asked if the £10.00 registration fee would also be applicable to Virgin customers. The person at Boxnation told me Virgin can charge what they want for the channel, or put the channel into any package they want, as long as they cover the agreed cost per customer. Boxnations customer service rep further confirmed they had no say on how Virgin offer the channel on their platform.

I don't think you can even get SKY Sports News on BT. That alone for some sports fans would be a major loss if they moved from Virgin or SKY to BT.

There is also the added complication of Liberty and what their view will be.

This is because of the Sports all the way through 1-4 are available as opposed to just 1 & 2, and in HD.

Just a quick tip, Sky have recently changed how to get Sports/Movies in HD on their platform. You now have to subscribe to their top package (£31 I believe), plus another £5.25 and your SS Subscription. Which would make it around £55. If you aren't interested in the TV channels this is a pretty crap deal.

Sky World HD is £65.75/month

Sky World HD, with Unlimited Phone and Unlimited Broadband and multiroom is £95.50 for 6 months, £103 thereafter.

When compared with current Virgin package:
TV XL, Sports, Movies, Phone XL, BB XXL, ESPN = £114.55

Basically, that means Sky works out £182.10 cheaper over 12 months.

EDIT: Just looked up BT infinity BB & phone prices. Can get Unlimited Phone and BB for £38.45 which makes it £104.20 when added to Sky World but it's free for 6 months so is £88.20 for 6 months with Sky World, then £104.20. Which is a saving of £220.20 over 12 months. So even bigger saving.

In fact, for £38.45 you can get Unlimited Phone and BB with BT, plus a youview box which solves the problem of the 3rd tuner, as you can record as a 3rd tuner with the you view box.

TalkTalk is £30.45 for internet and unlimited phone. Don't know what they're like. But added to sky world that's £96.20

I worked Sky out to be World HD, Unlimited Calls and Fibre Unlimited (40Mbit) to be £105.25 monthly. Including line rental it would be £119.75 a month so don't know where you get your prices from lol. Customer deals don't count either!! VM VIP is better value (120Mbit vs 40Mbit) for £5.96 cheaper a month.!!!!This is all from their website

You also quoted vm's price including line rental and sky's price not including line rental!! sneaky bugger i seen what you did there!! trying to make vm look a lot more expensive.

Yes but I was trying to point out, if you don't watch TV (just the basic terrestrial channels), and Sport in HD, it now works out cheaper than Sky with virgin cause with Virgin you don't have to have the XL Pack, you can be on M+, unlike Sky where to get them in HD you now must sign to their equivalent to the XL Pack (EE+), then another £5.25 HD, then your SS sub. Yes it's cheaper if you want all the channels, but not if you only watch the basics.

Can't you subscribe to Sky Sports on Sky and then pay £5 to have them in HD? I thought they'd effectively split their HD charge between normal and premium TV.

You could take Entertainment at £21.50 add HD charge at £10.25 and Sky Sports £21.00 totalling £52.25

However as ocav has stated your now required to take Entertainment Extra+ to add sports in HD which adds up as follows Entertainment Extra+ £31.50 , Sky Sports £21 , Sports in HD £5.25 totalling £57.75.

No I wasn't. That Sky price includes line rental but it's for Up to 20mb BB.

Sorry but those prices are up to 20mb BB. So yes Virgin's you get more (supposedly).

I know everyone is different. But for us tbh, there is no difference for us between up to 20mb and 100mb that we have now. We don't download just browse the web, and it's not noticeably different for just browsing.

Even YouTube videos on 100mb BB are notoriously slow to load on Virgin so there isn't much benefit. FOR US(before you heckle)

yes £5.25 but you have to take Entertainment extra +. there is entertainment, entertainment extra and plus.

They are in increments of £5.

So Sky entertainment with sports is £42.50, but to take HD you have to pay extra £10 for entertainment extra + plus £5.25 hd fee so it's £57.75

you may as well get Sky World for £65.75 if you're going to get that.

I have been reliably informed that SKY will be flooding the internet with 50% off for 12 month deals when BT launch their new look TV service and ESPN drops out of XL. My wifes cousin who works for SKY, and set us up on a 12 months 50% off contract, suggested up to 150,000 codes will be made available from July / August.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/92...l-back-on.html

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/92...ily-codes.html

I'll keep people posted when the deals are on. You'll be able to get SKY's top package for around £65.00 per month for a whole year, or around £75.00 to £80.00 if you take BT Sports on top of this. It's only a 12 month contract anyway so at the end you could return to Virgin and get a further 6 months half price from them too. 18 months of half price TV!

Just out of interest, if and when ESPN drops out of XL will customers be able to cancel their services under their terms and conditions due to their services being adversely effected?

No updates in months from BT - Hope to get more on Friday.

I don't understand why these newspapers keep going on saying BT will undercut Sky in the pubs market.
Surely as BT only have 1 game per week, that's not undercutting but just offering less for less.

One game per week???

BT have got two packages - one being 1st picks of the weekend games of 12.45pm on Saturdays.
The other one (I forgot the times of that package)

Oops sorry you are right:

Package - Kick-off times
1. Saturday 12:45 (26 games in all)
2. 10 matches midweek evenings and Bank Holidays, 2 matches Saturday 12:45 (12 games in all)

BT have 38 games. The Premiership season has 38 rounds of games meaning BT have the equivalent of 1 game per week whilst SKY have about 3 per week.

The Daily Mail reported:

"And Scudamore’s team were able to extricate every possible penny from what were previously the least attractive match choices by the ‘game changer’ of including a total of 18 first picks in BT’s set of 38 games to be shown on the Saturday 12.45pm slot and midweek and Bank Holidays."

"Sky’s ‘Monday Night Football’, an 8pm match, and ‘Super Sunday’, featuring 1.30pm and 4pm kick-offs, are unaffected.
But ESPN’s absence means Sky also take over the Saturday 5.30pm kick-offs."

I did think BT has got the rights to 52 games - I was thinking EPL sold the TV packages in pack of 26.

Yes they have Pack A: 26 x 12.45pm Saturday slots
and Pack G: 12 games split into: 2 x 12.45pm Sat slots, + 10 Midweek + bank holiday fixtures.

That's 38 games. So they will only be broadcasting on 28 weekends of the season plus midweek + Christmas etc...

Any 18 of BT's choice are first picks.

Obviously, Sky retain first picks for the other 20 matchday's.

Sky now have 5.30pm Sat, and retain Sunday 1.30pm + 4pm plus MNF.

Yes. BT are broadcasting 1 game on 28 weekends out of around 35/36(usually a couple of midweek matchdays).

Sky are broadcasting 3 games per weekend on average.

I think BT are saying that the Sat afternoon kick-off is the best time for pubs and claiming they want to capitalise on that market.
But how do they do that if they are "undercutting" sky's pub rights? Given their massive financial outlay.

The way some SPL teams are playing this season the SPL is good one for Horror Channel - but not going to happen. Due to Horror owners Liberty Global has said that they will not take on Sky Sports and BT Sports.

There's one less channel on the EPG today. Anyone know what's gone?

Could it be that we had Q radio and that's now gone (as per MB's post about Q leaving Freeview).

It's Travel and Living that was broadcasting on Channel 273 until last Tuesday.

Discovery Shed has now moved to Channel 273 (Was on Channel 274.)

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/92...ily-codes.html

I'll keep people posted when the deals are on. You'll be able to get SKY's top package for around £65.00 per month for a whole year, or around £75.00 to £80.00 if you take BT Sports on top of this. It's only a 12 month contract anyway so at the end you could return to Virgin and get a further 6 months half price from them too. 18 months of half price TV!

Just out of interest, if and when ESPN drops out of XL will customers be able to cancel their services under their terms and conditions due to their services being adversely effected?

Looks like this is starting early with all the moneysavingexpert 50% off codes, unless this is Sky's response to the Martin Lewis programme encouraging customers to ring them up to haggle a discount.

Sky was losing money for many years. They always took a gamble and mostly kept paying off.

Sky tested PPV and said if there wasn't enough people taking PPV up, they'd just have to switch those back to the subscription channels, as we know not all what is PPV in the USA is PPV in the UK, however enough people took up PPV and now we suffer more events being PPV instead of in the subscription.

I've found SPL and Rangers games tend to clash with this fixture. As a result I don't think I've ever watched a 12:45pm Saturday Premiership game. I noticed BT Sports are trying to move Scottish football to a Friday night to stop this clash from happening. I would not be surprised to see SKY move their 30 SPL and 5 Rangers games to Saturday lunch time to deliberately clash with BT's English games. It would certainly help BT Sports look less attractive north of the border. Rangers are my team. I don't care if it's Man United Vs. Man City or Chelsea Vs. Arsenal, if Rangers are playing the likes of Stenhousemuir or Forfar at the same time I'll watch my team. Surely all football fans would prefer to watch their own team ahead of someone else?

12.45 I always miss if going to a 3pm game and generally miss it more than I do any other kick-off time.

Chelsea 3 - 5 Arsenal is about the only great game I can remember at a 12.45pm kick-off.

Though given BT will have 18 first picks. Expect to see a few more che-ars, city-utd, liv-eve etc... in that slot.

My sympathies lie that way, light blue :D

And i watch all the games on tv at weekend (my main hobby), but 12:45 game always seems too early, and rarely is the game exciting (perhaps because it is the first game)

Or because it's crap teams. They're awful to go to also, worst time of the day.

I keep missing decent games, Newcastle-Sunderland the other week as was going to Wembley for semi-final.

This weekend, Villa - Che is in that 12.45pm slot.

"Super" Sunday last week was awful. 0-0 and 0-1, plus that 1-1 from QPR v ARS, and the 1-1 Stoke -Sun which I didn't watch fully. 5 goals in 4 games. dire.

Sky do a great job hyping the Premiership. There are 4 or 5 fantastic sides, 4 or 5 good sides but a lot of dross underneath that. Sorry Mods realise that is nothing to do with coming soon. :)

This season has been awful.

United have been functional.
City have been poor compared to last season and a bit boring.
Chelsea their usual mid-season disarray.
Arsenal and Spurs both have their usual mediocre spells.
You have Liverpool and Everton boring their way to 7/8th.

Then the rest of the league is dire and just one great big scrap to avoid relegation.

Hey! I heard that! I'm a City fan!

Me too, Season ticket holder for 16 years, this season has been as boring as the Pearce era. So narrow.

Yes now Fergie has gone, there will be freshness about next year, and personally, hopefully an end to the abusing of referees.

Just need to get rid of Hansen and co.

The quality of the Premiership this season has been very mediocre, the performances of all the premiership sides in the the Champions league bears this out. I believe it the worst showing of Premiership sides in the Champions league for some time.

Does anyone know why there are 'empty spaces' on VM EPG ?

To easily add any spin off channels eg +1's or HD variants. Leaving spaces allows related channels to be grouped together, without the need for constant EPG reshuffles.

I've not heard anything, but you'd think that they would put all their channels onto a platform that they own.

Having said that, VM didn't put all of the UKTV channels on until they had actually sold their share!

Incoming Virgin Media chief rules out war with Sky for football rights.

Quote:

Asked whether Virgin Media would bid for the Premiership at the next rights auction, Mockridge said: "The short answer is no. There's plenty of other people prepared to bid good money for football. Our strategy has been invest in content opportunistically but not bet the ranch on it."

However, he left the door open to expanding the footprint of Virgin's cable network, which currently reaches half of the UK population, with the rest served mainly by BT's network.

"There might be other ways of expanding the reach of Virgin Media, it's too soon to say. It is something we will look at more closely but we are not proclaiming any strategic areas here today."

VM you have removed all of the 3D content from on demand. I for one don't believe 3D is on the decline as most manufacturers are now slanting towards passive 3D. I'm soon to purchase a new TV and 3D is a priority. So can you reinstate some of the content please.

No Travel Channel and Food Network are both owned by Scripps Network Interactive.

Food Network is run in the UK and Europe by Liberty Global for Scripps Network Interactive.

I think I need to rebrand in June as 'Global Boy'!!!:D

I have a funny feeling that IF BT Sports comes onto VM, it will cost about a FIVER extra per month.

The reason being is that they will want to recoup some of there money - wasn't this the same price that Sky had that you had per game or you bought a 'season ticket'.

I cannot see it being free to XL or VIP customers.
