Possible new boss of future VM.?? I know absolutely nothing about him, but I agree with him, cable isn't dead, far from it.

I can't see Liberty doing a quick change with technology even if they bought VM, the TiVo rollout is too far advanced for that.

Plus I'm sure that even if there was the VM approach plan at the point of the interview, it's still all at a very early stage, so he wouldn't forshadow an plans in a promo interview for their existing cable services

By product I meant Virgin Media - more thinking that they would look to get TiVo licence perhaps. But it could just be a straight forward take over, which would then lead to savings - really do not need so many duplicated services ( or perhaps thats not how Liberty operate) and clearly a saving to be made when setting up channels - Kiss of death on the other hand for SA I would think:cool:

Big hitter, hard player, rich man.But not as rich as Murdoch I believe:)

I recall him saying dont bother to go head to head with him as its a no win ( for me) situation. If I win I paid too much or something like that:rolleyes:

Indeed he did say that , but he did out manouver the Dark Lord to take control of Direct TV until he sold much of his stake.

It's not Malone I'm referring to. I was responding to that video link where the boss of Liberty Global (a company owned by Malone) was talking.

As for Malone, yes big hitter, hard player as you say. But just like Murdoch, he's old now and not involved in day-to-day things, which is just as well as he has had a terrible reputation in the States for how he treats cablecos there and customers. Coughs: sweating assets...

Malone is the ultimate boss and the one with the money, but if he buys VM, it will be someone whom he apoints to steer uk cable into the future.

That was the ultimate blow against Murdoch.

Murdoch's dream was a global satellite tv company, Malone blew it pieces.

Anyway, these old farts are yesterday's news. Murdoch, Malone, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sumner Redstone (viacom owner), Eisner (Disney's old boss) etc are all big media players from the last century. Who will be this century's big hitters is TBD (to be decided)?

I have still to be given an update from my insider on Eurosport 2 HD plus any other channels (If any more not confirmed by Technix) set to launch. The last confirmed was the new Discovery deal last Friday.

The following is the views of Media Boy HQ:
No update since 10am from insider but I think next week 'things to happen' will be the rest of The Discovery Channels launching on Virgin on February 12th or February 14th.

....dmax 2 is almost certainly a placeholder. But the other channels were to allow Discovery Channel to be in the entertainment section and thus higher up the list on sky's epg, albeit under a different name(s).

He's right. No-one gets their DVR from TiVo any more - they get it from their cable company. TiVo realised this long ago, which is why they are doing deals with the likes of VM, ONO and a load of US cable companies.

Reports are coming through that a deal has been agreed for Liberty Global to buy Virgin Media. What that means for TiVo, Neil Berkett and Virgins future TV strategy is anyone's guess.

Looks like the TV market in the UK is about to get very interesting. We all thought BT where going to make the biggest strides over the next 12 months however it looks like Liberty Media, or whatever they will be called, will be a major player.

Looks like RIP for Virgin Media as we know it.

What box / software do UPC use? Have they rolled out their current box accross the rest of their European outfit? Do Irish UPC customers and Dutch UPC customers have the same PVR, EPG and software? If so, doesn't look good unless they plan to roll the Virgin TiVo box out accross Europe.

So no way they will keep TiVo,

That box is already rolled out in iteland and europe.

"It will be rolled out in Switzerland, Germany and Ireland over the next 3-6 months. International cable company Liberty Global has been working with a number of partners on the ambitious project, which promises to transform the cable television experience for its customers, allowing them to view media across television, computer, tablet and smartphone screens."

That was October 2012.

So looks like end of TiVo, shame really after all the hype VM put into TiVo and marketing it etc

Looks grim for TiVo. The above however doesn't look too bad.

Does anyone have more info on Horizon they can share?

There is a reason for that, one of the main companies behind Horizon is NDS, Rupert Murdoch's old encrytion company, as was. So looks more similar to Sky that tivo.

Will channel provider contracts after be renewed ?????

http://blogs.wsj.com/overheard/2013/02/05/tivo-threat-on-the-horizon/

This seems to suggest TiVo will remain in place for 4 years. However why would a new company continue to rollout TiVo boxes for the next 4 years if at the end they will need to replace them all with their own PVR's. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Liberty Global agreeing terms with TiVo to bring the current deal to a swift and amicable end. It would probably work out cheaper for Liberty Global, in the long temr, to end the deal with TiVo ASAP.

TiVo are bleeding money, they've survived off lawsuits in the last few years, no-one in their right mind would buy them.

From what I can gather, Liberty have invested substantial money in Horizon over the past 12 to 24 months. They've not long started to roll it out accross Europe, which will continue for about another 6 months. I can't see them dropping Horizon or trying to buy TiVo.

From the limited info I've seen so far, Horizon looks like it's got the potential surpass what TiVo has to offer. Sadly it looks like TiVo's latest stay in the UK will be a short one.

I agree, but the only thing at the back of my mind is the eventual demise of the stb and pvr and all services being transferred to the cloud. Then, its just a case of which service is better.

Wait a minute I've just noticed something strange. Are you an inside man for UPC? Are you a real person or a next gen PVR :D ;)

Interesting news!!! Do I remember correctly that UPC Ireland have Sky Sports News and a few other HD channels VM do not have? Will be interesting to see how this deal pans out over the next few months, and if the future owners will thrash out similar deals for us. What better way to tempt customers over to the future new company than with a launch of a load of new HD channels:-)

Another solid set of figures, with Berkett giving the credit to superfast broadband and TiVo. I can't see TiVo going just yet when it's one of the reasons that Virgin has become attractive to Liberty. Obviously in the longer term the Liberty box will be the replacement for the TiVo, but then they were always going to have to do something new after 5 to 10 years. For now I think the TiVo roll out has gone too far, and been too successful, for it to come to an abrupt end.

To be fair when one company takes over another 9 times out of 10 there's a reconstruction phase which means job losses!

I don;t care who provides me with what! However i'm slightly worries about this rivalry between the two protagonists! I hope it doesn't effect us from having Sky channels in the medium to long term!

The incentive plan that was approved a couple of weeks ago does have the 'if a senior member of staff departs within 12 months of a change in ownership they get accelarated share incentives' clauses, so I wouldn't be surprised if within those 12 months there's a reasonable number of new faces in the posh management offices. Can't say I'd be too upset to fall fowl of that sort of clause.

Cheers

Amongst other things, broadband speeds have increased from a top speed of 20Mbit to 120Mbit, 4 disperate companies have been merged, TiVo has launched and is attracting new subscribers, Sky HD channels have been made available, plus lots of other things people forget.

Oh and the share price has tripled since Neil B took over (compared with a 48% increase for Sky in the same period) and the company has gone from being financially unsound to making a profit in the first time in UK cable history

All you've mentioned there is picture quality (HD) and Sky Atlantic, yet many posts are treating it as if we are missing half the TV that's on.

Universal HD obviously isn't coming as the deal has already been done this year but I'd say its a safe bet ITV HD will be done in the next ITV negotiations because they get the viewers.

Far point m8,sky knew they were onto a winner when they branched into the HD market and have had massive success from it,vm were very slow in acquiring it and it wasn't till customers started to leave that vm finally aquired a considerable amount of HD channels.rather than continue to grow they seemed to rest on there laurels.more people are now getting HD compatible tv's and are naturally wanting HD channels,I personally don't watch sd channels if a program I want to watch is on them I obtain HD versions by other means.
