I don't know whether you but, you need a 3D tv to get 3D pictures, whether its HD or not.

I can never understand that VM have all this capacity for TV channels wether HD or not, yet they don't bring them on. Sky TV have so many channels you lose count.

I think if VM want to be a major force in the industry, then they have got to bring them out, and l don't mean +1, as to me they are NOT new channels.

When they go in for talks with distrinutors over TV channels, there talks go on so long it gets cobwebs. When they put the price's up, which they will l am sure that customers will complain.

Just to mention that there is a new channel started on Sky today called ' UMPStars' about Bollywood.

I wonder if this will start on VM, or are they in talks ?

Wouldn't mind but BT won them

Sky and BT have just put in over £3b...a 70% increase...wonder how big Sky's increase will be next year

BT have confirmed that they will launch a new football-focused channel to carry the games and will look to distribute it on other platforms.

This might just be the beginning of the end for ESPN :(

Thats a huge blow for ESPN!!!!

Interesting to see if this new BT channel will be in the XL package and in HD. Big move by BT.

Virgin have long been the home of "free" Premier League football. This channel will be available to Virgin on a subscription basis, I would imagine, much like ESPN currently is on Sky, but I reckon it'll only be on BT Vision and you view that you'll be able to watch it as part of your subscription-that's the new home of "free" Premier League football.

Would BT even let Virgin have rights to show it.

I have a friend whom is talking about ditching Virgin & moving to a "joint" Sky/ BT setup . Not happy about two phone line rentals etc.

Me I could not care less

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Thought you might be interested in a snippet from the BT statement issued to BT employees which states what has been publically stated but puts an important different slant on one specific aspect namely:

"We will launch a new football-focused channel to carry the games. It will offer new interactive features when supplied over BT’s fibre network and we will look to distribute it on other platforms.”

So what the above “could” mean is that while VM will have access to this new BT football focused channel (subject to negotiations of course), the "additional new interactive features" will only be available via the "BT fibre network"?

If that is what eventually happens (could be reading more than is here today), could we end up with a big dispute with BT, like VM had with the Sky red button for their interactive sports features?

VM are working on the strategy they are an independent carrier now, reaching agreements with content providers. Trouble with that strategy is that if the content owner (in this case football coverage) are themselves competitive carriers and want to secure an advantage (e.g. lack of F1 HD on VM is an example of that right now), then do VM have the necessary right and weight from anti-competitive legislation to force change on such providers? It will be an interesting 12 months to see have things develop with this new BT channel.

To be honest even if Virgin were still content providers i.e still owned Virgin Media TV and UKTV, there wouldn't have been anything they could have done about this

Firstly Virgin Media ( for the moment) is my provider of choice ,but I fail to see why ANYONE should be forced to use them if they choose not to:)

Possibly not, it depends on how much of a driver free Premier League football was for signing up new subs. I suspect not very-the recent upsurge appears to be more down to TiVo, for example-the majority of people wanting sport will always choose Sky. I fear that Virgin might in for a nasty shock when it comes to finding out how many subs free Premier League football actually retains however, but we'll see. I do not believe that Virgin and ESPN together were powerless to prevent the rights going to BT, but they obviously didn't see the value in doing so. For the very first time since I've been a cable customer, I now find myself thinking that Virgin are going to have some very good news for it's customers, and soon, or they may find themselves in a bit of trouble.

The EPL isn't the be-all end-all with everyone (saying that well done Reading :) ).

There are a lot of sports I watch on ESPNA + ESPN has some good Rugby coverage and would HATE to lose it from the XL pack.

"Firstly Virgin Media ( for the moment) is my provider of choice ,but I fail to see why ANYONE should be forced to use them if they choose not to"

The "force" comment from me was meant to be VM onto BT to at least have neutral status on what is incuded in an agreement with BT on this new channel, since without that, consumers are "forced" to subscribe to BT to gain all features of the channel. Apologies if missleading. Nobody is forcing consumers to subscribe to a channel except Sky (in the case of HD) and maybe BT now IF you want all the features with that channel.

That is the situation now with the Sky F1/SP3/SP4 channels where to get all features (HD in this case), you can only get that from Sky. The additional interactive features could potentially be an new battle ground where VM loose out? We shall wait and see.

I may be stating the obvious here but ESPN are owned by Disney, who aren't exactly short on cash. I don't think Virgin getting involved financially would have made any different to the decision by ESPN

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

There's a difference between having access to Disney's cash, a company who don't have a desire to have a strong foothold in the broadcasting British sport in Britain, and BT's cash-a company who, through BT Vision and you view, have demonstrated a desire to be an important part of this country's communication media. Disney, and by extension ESPN, might have considerably more money than Virgin, but if the old adage that you have to speculate to accumulate is true, I would suggest that Virgin had more to gain by spending their's than Disney did. Either way, what's important is that neither ESPN or Virgin saw the value in making a serious effort to acquire these rights, and BT did.

Perfect Choice 14-06-2012 11:44

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

There is the "interesting" aspect here of BT using its cash generated from legacy telco and business comminications to enter the media business as they certainly did not find that cash from BT Vision revenues. That is a market I suppose, just needs strong anti-competitive ligislation to make sure a fair competitive market is in place and on-content owners like VM do not get locked out. No issue on BT owning these rights now as long as they are available via subscription of course.

.

Sorry to harp on .As I have stated before I can not understand why anyone should think that a company ( in this case BT) having paid out for a product
( EPL) Should be made to offer it to the competition.
Whom then by the very nature of that offer, will :-
a) undermine the push to draw customers to them
b) Pick up the "service" on the cheap . BT pay X. Virgin pay X-Y
If they wish to off set some of the costs fine but make no sorry. :dozey:

Clearly Virgin had a choice about EPL and choose not( or in fact choose too) to exercise it, by not buying the rights.

I hope it works out well for all you footie fans and you have not got to make an expense ( Or painful )choice:)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Because the platforms aren't available to everyone. BT can buy the rights, but their fibre optic product isn't available to everybody. Part of regulating the sale of the rights has to be to ensure fairness for the end user/ consumer. In general, I agree, BT have stumped up the cash and have the right to benefit from the return their investment brings, but a way has to be found to allow everybody to access the product, otherwise all that's happened is prices for everybody are raised to pay for a product only available to since.

Sorry my feeling is tough luck. Life is not fair. no one should expect it to be. As with so many things these days, I want it so I get it ,seems to be the mantra. Like little kids, people seem to think if they scream & kick it will be given to them. Like the recent riots "I want I will get it" syndrome kicks in .
However now I have said that its off my chest.

There's a world of difference between the person that would rather loot a shop than save up for a new pair of trainers, and the person willing to pay to watch football but unable to do so because they cannot physically access the platform that regulation-the very thing which is supposed to safeguard that person-has allowed to buy the rights. That's not a person who wants something for nothing, but a person who wants the same opportunity to access content as most other people.

Perfect Choice 14-06-2012 12:35

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

There is a difference between commercial advantage and being anti-competitive. On the basis of Itshim comments, winning football viewing rights could mean BT are not forced to offer to other providers and keep an exclusivity, so tough luck view on VM/ESPN not bidding enough? But that crosses over to the anti-competitive situation and that is where it gets dangerous. That said, BT have already said they will be offering the channel to other providers (subject to agreed terms of course). The issue I thought I had started was what happens to complementary services like interactive and HD for that matter. Ofcom do not necessarily consider these as anti-competitive so on that basis, tough luck is the answer and subscribers will need to buy BT Vision in future to get all features, if they are that keen on football, or if they want access to all the channels which BT Vision does not have access to, by both BT Vision and VM or Sky.

Whether you regard this as good competitive practice or market fragmentation at the cost of viewers/subscribers is up to your own individual views.

There is also a difference between the person that loots a shop for expensive trainers and the person who lives within his means and buys a cheaper pair of trainers.

We can't all drive a Rolls Royce, we can't all go watch live football games at the stadiums, we can't all afford to watch premium sports content. Lives harsh what can I say.

Total Channels update.

Sometime since Tuesday night my Total channels has gone down by one to 385 on my V+ HD Box - But no channels has been removed.

You may not know: BT hoping to offer their Footy channel to other networks.

BT – the latest challenger to Sky after Setanta and ESPN – is expected to launch a new sports channel, available on a variety of platforms.

Just to add my two pennys worth before this discussion dies... Sky where "convinced" to let BT carry Sky Sports 1 & 2 even though they had built the premier league and s#ky sports brand up over 17 years or so and spent 100's of millions doing so, if BT don't now make their 38 matches available it wouldn't be very fair would it?

Then Sky would be getting a taste of their own medicine when they decide to withhold channels/content to other platforms. And about time too I say (if it does happen :))

BT do not have enough subscribers to keep the content exclusive to them and make it financially viable. They need as many as possible to have access to drive up subscribtions and advert rates. It will be interesting to see what they fill the rest of the channel with. ESPN charge what £10 a month on Sky and have had little uptake and that is with a range of other content as well as premier league football.

If you look at the whole package here, IF VM want this new channel from BT for the football etc, then they had better start talks now, as we all know how long there talks take.

As we all know that ESPN ARE ON btvision and Sky, so l cannot see a problem there with getting the channel.

My only question would be again is WHY on earth bid for EPL rights, when your customer base is smaller than VM, something smells of Setanta Sports to me.

They will be pushing this with infinity if you read the press release. Im expecting that the matches will be free for Infinity users.

I mean we have only just got it.

We don't get 'multiscreen' on TiVo... we get the 'connected' tv service that is developing- mentioned in the link given by Media Boy.

You think it's a pity that we get the system that's being actively developed and added to rather than the old one that's having functionality removed? How odd.

I use YouTube on TiVo to watch music videos these days. You'll find pretty much everything on there. Much, much better than Virgins music on demand, and plenty of HD music videos too!

Got to agree with you. Even Kerrang in recent years has become diluted with generic American new metal. Seems there is a production line of bands that keep getting churned out all with the same sound, same look and same fan base.

Unfortunately that's the case on all TV versions of YouTube. It's the same on my TV and Blu-ray player. YouTube allow videos to be made unavailable on certain platforms.

In addition to this, it's mostly down to the record company's choice. I uploaded a video once with a popular song and YouTube automatically detected it. As the company that manages that song has stated it can't be seen on mobile devices, I cannot watch my own video on my phone.

That explains it then. I'm always disappointed with the with the choice on the TiVo version of YouTube which returns far fewer search results than for the same search on my PC.

Some music is terrible to get on-line, for instance when hmv had it's unlimited streaming service, some albums had tracks on that you couldn't stream because the track had been written by another person / artist and the publishing was owned by another company who wouldn't agree for it be streamed, downloaded or whatever, you don't always realise how much negotiating and legal mine fields something as seemingly easy as listening / watching on-line can take.. as a buisness owner i would love to know how much U-tube pays prs and ppl???

Maybe Disney will sell ESPN UK to BT and they change its name to "BT Sport" and "BT Sport HD"

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

I can't see ESPN wanting to become a subcription only based channel especially if BT supply a channel to VM with the EPL.
Without the EPL football rights people will cancel subscriptions in droves loosing lots of viewers and ESPN will not want to risk loosing even more than needed by cutting XL pack status in favour of a subscription based deal without nothing to entice customers to subscribe to, afterall without the EPL football there is very little else to warrant paying £10 per month to subscribe to ESPN for.

My guess is ESPN will keep its XL pack status but add ESPNA HD as a xl pack channel as well but the new channels that were rumoured to be coming (such as ESPN 2 and ESPN News) won't ever see the light of day.

borrissey 18-06-2012 17:48

Will BT sign up more sport for there sports channel cause prem league football won't take up much time.

ESPN is still subscription only on Sky - costs £12pm unless you also have Sky Sports when it is then £9pm.

---------- Post added at 16:50 ---------- Previous post was at 16:49 ----------

The reports said that would launch a football channel - rather then mentioning a sports channel.

It actually said football "focused", which I think leaves the way open for it to show a wide range of stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with football whatsoever.

borrissey 18-06-2012 18:15

There won't be much football on there unless they sign up other leagues, but I don't think there's much out there to sign up. Espn and sky have them.

If BT don't get much additional content then they could always offer a Prem Plus style offering similar to what Sky used to do for the additional games. All this used to do was have a place holder on the channel advertising the service and price and then just go live for a few hours for each match. They used to just charge a one off fee for access for the full season.

I'm presuming that if EE do buy Virgin Media, they will keep the branding intact since it's already established, especially with TiVo?

Its not Everything Everywhere that is looking to buy them, a consortium is looking to buy EE and the same consortium is interested in Virgin Media.

Its hard to say what they would do with the brand, they want to be able to cross sell TV, Phone, Broadband and Mobile like Virgin do now but it depends if they see Virgin Mobile as big enough for a brand for the mobile side of things.

Not necessarily. New owners may not wish to be associated with Richard Branson and pay him money for the Virgin moniker. So, Orange Cable may be on the horizon, or Everything Everywhere but not not quite everywhere!

Emel. thanks for highlighting that article. I have always thought and said so on this forum that cable mergers aren't yet over in this country. I would also expect any new company to try and nab ITV too if it all goes ahead, but very early days yet.

Branding aside (I personally don't think the Virgin brand is that important), Virgin mobile is tiny and totally irrelevant especially if this new company keeps hold of the orange and T-mobile networks. And of course Virgin mobile doesn't have a network of its own but piggyback's off T-mobile's.

It was "just speculation" about Al Jazeera that helped push the premier league TV deal into the stratosphere....and who saw BT coming? :)

Good news. I know VM will be getting Alibi HD around that time so fingers crossed. Once this is added the only big gaps left in my viewing pleasure will be the 'missing' ITV HD channels and Sky Atlantic. Dare I hope for some more good news later in the year?

Will the govenrment allow it?

If they do, then Virgin Mobile will become the biggest Mobile company in the UK!

Shame VM did not go for C&W Worldwide!

Virgin are not interested in running TV channels, so they will not buy ITV plc (or STV plc)

I think if they is going to be a VM/EE merger, then they should think up a new brand name (can I start a thread about a EE/VM merger?)

It wouldn't be VM that is the largest network! VM is the one being bought so would no longer exist as an entity. Its operations would just become part of another entity's operations.

Would E-Media be a good name for the combined VM/EE company?

The way Virgin Media work their EPG out I think it safe to say the following will happen on July 3rd:

131. Ailbi HD
194. Ailbi +1 (Moving from channel 131.)

E-Media is a rather good name (E-Mobile, E-Phone, E-Vision and E-Net would also work as brand names for the 4 services they provide)

Virgin Media at no point were ever interested in C&W Worldwide.
