It is separate from the broadcast connectivity that we have where

if you say three years that's 17 hd channels a year. 2 new hd channels this year so far, 15 hd channels to come this year ? this is just a estimate

It all good to say we want to launch 50 new HD Channels.

But it upto Virgin Media to sign the deal with an broadcaster to carry their HD Channels.

Interesting misinterpretation there......

VM haven't said 17 channels a year, they said up to another 50 in tbe next 2-3 years - not the same thing.

So in that case expect 50 HD channels in the third year knowing Virgin.

Nothing has been confirmed on the ruddy Facebook page. Saying 'there are no plans at the moment' and 'in the future' is not a confirmation of anything whatsoever.

The account isn't there to ask queries about new channels and services, only to promote confirmed upcoming services while the Twitter account acts as a secondary customer service.

Virgin Media Don't panic Tony Dalton, Kyle Sanderson and Clive Knott.....We've got more HD channels being added to our extensive portfolio in the near future.

We've come along way in a year and a half, when we only had one HD channel (BBC HD).

Watch this space, we'll release more info. when the time is right.

What are they going to type?

You better sit down Tony Dalton, Kyle Sanderson and Clive Knott... because we've got no more HD channels being added.

We've come along way in a year and a half, when we only had one HD channel (BBC HD). Now if you want any more, you'll have to go elsewhere.

Watch virginmedia.com because if we actually reveal anything before its on there we'll probably be given our marching orders.

Sky Sports News HD isn't a 'basic' channel any more and I don't see us getting Sky News HD either.

Its took them 9 month upto Sky Arts 1 & 2 HD so I don't think any more fruit will be gathered from that deal 12 month on.

Also, please stop linking to any hint, rumour, murmur, wall carving and inkling of news, clearly anything the VM staff know they're not allowed to say based on the staff that are on here so they're not going to give away anything on Virginmedia.com or VM social networking accounts are they?

UKTV Channels HD to launch on Virgin as part of the deal confirmed

Quote:

Dear Martin

Thanks you for your mail which Neil has asked me to answer on his behalf.

Your email comes at a great time as Virgin Media has just completed agreements to launch the new HD channels from UKTV . I'm really pleased to say that we'll be adding them to our HD channel line-up as soon as we possibly can. - We're still in discussion with UKTV about the precise technical details re timing, but our aspiration is to launch at the same time as Sky or as soon as possible after.

Kind regards
Peter

Mirror: Olympics radio station to be launched by BBC.

The BBC is to launch a temporary Olympics radio station for London 2012.

The plan for a new digital and online service was given the go-ahead by the BBC Trust today.

It has also approved plans to devote youth channel BBC3 to broadcasting the event next summer for its duration.

But Freeview viewers will lose BBC Parliament to free up the broadcasting capacity on Freeview, but it will resume if Parliament is recalled in that time.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/london-...5875-23346684/

The 2012 Summer Olympics are planned to take place between 27 July 2012 and 12 August 2012.

Just because it is on a VM site does not mean a channel will actually be launching on the platform.

They can use any channel logos they want on a website. Also if you actually look at the logos properly, they aren't all the HD logos. CN, Disney, Sky Movies, MTV and Comedy Central are just the SD channel logos. Its just a banner at the bottom of a web page.

Sometimes we are told this thread is for the facts so people make other threads to discuss that and then they get closed and we are told to post in here and the cycle continues. It would only take a moment, do a mods only poll or something.

If you have all got together and worked it out already just explain that in the thread so we know it's not a moving target.

Also if you have told us not to discuss it in this thread maybe it's best if your next post doesn't start talking about the thing you have told us not to talk about.

Thanks

Hi, Can I apologise for the confusion that has arisen over this issue about what can be discussed in this thread.

My previous ruling stands and that is, that this thread can be used for gossip about future products.

Just to be clear to those who are not aware. I am one of the owners of this website, My ruling countermands any other moderators instruction.

Thanks for that Mick that helps a lot.

One question, does "gossip about future products" include products that haven't been announced, like Nick HD?

A lot of this thread is speculation about what is, or might be, coming to Virgin TV. Thus a lot of the comment is unsubstantiated, unannounced, product observation. It's quite reasonable for you to be discussing such matters.

Jesus wept. Once again, like customers, they're not going to say to the investors "we have no plans for more HD channels" are they? The only difference in this case is the investors can't go to advertising standards or whoever if their investment goes sour.

So what happens after 30 seconds when the price is still far too high for you and the other party will not budge?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

An insider that I knew back in ntl: days told me that most of the negotiations surrounded which pack they were in and if they were, who else would be in that pack. Today with the M, L & XL it would hopefully be easier, but contract negotiations are rarely quick.

Plus this cost Virgin money. Every non shopping channel they pay for. They then have to ensure that they can get their money back from advertising and subscriptions. This is unlike Sky where the channel pays them to use their platform.

This is why Sky gets the channels at launch.

zantarous 23-08-2011 08:30

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Channels do not pay sky, except for a EPG fee, to be in their pack selection. They get a cut from subscription prices and have to pay rental fees to Astra.

They pay a platform contribution charge , something what costs the BBC approx 4 mill a year just for BBC 1.

Impact wrestling is recorded weeks in advance to its us airings anyway so there will always be spoilers even if challenge aired it the same time spike do. that's why ratings are so poor in America,

Discovery may launch full 3D Channel in UK and Ireland.

This came after Discovery licensed its 3D VoD content - some from 3Net - to the UK's BSkyB and Virgin Media despite having gained a license to broadcast a 3D channel in the territory. Discovery plans to see how the shows work before deciding whether to launch a channel, Hollinger added.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

i would be really annoyed if they cancelled the bbc red button, i use that for wimbledon matches.

Why would they need to get rid of them for bandwidth anyway, sky has loads of bandwidth, so does virgin and any new channels on freeview hd would need a new mux unless they are planning to make the video quality even worse for freeview hd and have 5 channels on 1 mux instead of 4.

analog will be switched off in around 12 months anyway, so i don't see why the red button needs to go other than cutting costs.
