Sherlock has been cancelled by the BBC, at least for the foreseeable future.
Quote:

We’re doing Dracula, which is going to take two years at least.
We’re not going to do Sherlock whilst we’re doing Dracula. So it’s not going to happen in the immediate future.

A Series of Unfortunate Events has been cancelled by Netflix after 3 seasons.
Quote:

Season 1 adapted the first four books in the 13-book series. Season 2 (March 2018) will cover books five through nine, with the third [and final] season (late 2018/early 2019) adapting the remaining four books.

Disappointing about Sherlock as that is a fantastic series.

cimt 02-02-2018 15:23

Re: Renewals & Cancellations

Cancelled is a strong word for both of them. They'll do Sherlock when everyone is available for it. With A Series of Unfortunate Events wasn't it always known it would only be 3/4 seasons from the get go?

Stephen 02-02-2018 21:07

Re: Renewals & Cancellations

To me neither are really cancelled. Sherlock has always been made whenever the cast are available and the latter only had so much source material to cover. So its really ending where it needs to.

Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock – we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways. We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again. When, I don’t know. I think maybe the time for a longer gap is upon us, I don’t know. A longer gap? They’re always long gaps! We’re doing Dracula, which is going to take two years at least. We’re not going to do Sherlock whilst we’re doing Dracula. So it’s not going to happen in the immediate future. Never say never, but no – we don’t have an idea [right now]. I could see us making more Sherlocks,” Moffat concluded. “I could see us making Sherlocks way in the future. It’s not the kind of show that has to come back all the time. It can revisit. Yes, Librarians basically took over from Warehouse 13, both were a very similar premise.

Both were pure "silly" entertainment, much like Eureka as well.
I cant think of anything left now thats similarly just daft sci-fi/fantasy entertainment.

Neither can I. It makes me wonder what the future holds.

I'm pretty much like General Maximus, I love "True SciFi", to me that is in space and will be the future in the main.

Admittedly there is also SciFi based on this planet but it always involes something from the future, an example would be Continuum where a gang were sent back in time.

Most SciFi is a projection of what could happen or what is being developed with technology we have now.

SciFan (fantasy) can be viewed either as escapism or entertainment. Librarians, The Magicians and even anything by Terry Pratchett (IMHO) covers both escapism and (swear filter) good entertainment!

I think it was 5 years ago now I was talking to Chris Judge (Stargate) and he was pitching to a Canadian channel (Space or Science?) a SciFi series of a 1 hour episode and than afterwards a 30min discussion of the present or (being developed) future science which the episode was based on.

My total recollection is a bit faded as Chris and I drank the hotel in Newcastle dry of Scotch in one night!

Paul 09-03-2018 14:32

Re: Renewals & Cancellations

The Magicians is good fantasy, and I enjoy it - but its very dark, not exactly light entertainment.

pip08456 09-03-2018 14:48

Re: Renewals & Cancellations

Entertainment Light/Dark or in the middle is entertainment. Only those who want to be entertained by the content would continue to watch it.

This is why I replied earlier that there is a difference between SciFi and SciFan, they are 2 entirely different things and should not be confused as some people do.

Added to that you just have a Fantasy genre as well.

Magicians I would put in the Fantasy genre personally thereby being good escapism.

There's nothing wrong with that either, I love escaping into the world of the Magicians, The Librarians or Terry Pratchett etc.

We all need relaxation now and again.

They are worried about the backlash and furior of LoT being renewed when AoS is cancelled. It is a joke (if it happens).

Yup, and last time i checked AoS was pasting LoT where the ratings are concerned which is why it is annoying me so much. Unfortunately i dont think the ratings have got anything to do with it and it us all to do with franchise strategy. AoS will be cancelled to round off the closure of the current MCU and LoT will be renewed to maintain and promote the DC universe.

I dont know what you mean by "pasting", but you cannot just compare numbers directly as they are on different networks.

AoS is on ABC, which gets higher actual numbers of viewers than CW anyway.

The worst ABC shows do better in simple numbers terms than the best CW shows. (for example, Inhumans had more viewers than the Flash gets).

LoT's figures are steady this season, and its doing better than Arrow.

You can't really compare those viewing figures as ABC is a much bigger channel with a far higher regular viewer base.

I don't think so.

I could never get into Jessica Jones albeit I only gave it 4 episodes. If a series doesn't get me after that I tend to just leave it.

I did create a custom DVD cover for it though. (a hobby I have).

Here it is compressed due to file size limitations here but still looking good!

Nicely done, i like the idea of doing that if i backed everything up to bluray but these days it is easier and cheaper to keep everything on hdd and nas. When i was at uni i spent a lot of time backing up sg1 and voyager on cd (pre-dvd). 350mb eps at 2 eps per disc = a lot of discs. TDK did 4 or 5 different colours of discs so i colour coded the seasons and had 2 huge revolving cd racks for everything :)

General, the days of DVD and Blu-Ray are passing us by. Everything in the future and to a great extent eve now will be on local HDD or Cloud storage.

That said video compression has come on leaps and bounds. More episodes on a disc it you want a physical back-up.

2x 350Mb eps per disc goes back to the SVCD days not 4.5Gb or 9Gb single or dual layer DVD's or even the larger capacity of Blu-Ray discs of today.

I still enjoy doing them occasionally as I find it relaxing. I also Admin a site for them, totally free just requires registration. http://uncovered.name .

NCIS has been renewed for Season 16.

Poor decision imo by the network. Certainly since at least Season 12 the show has been a poor shadow of it's former self. Time to put it out of its misery imo now.

Although the ratings are going down it is still hugely popular. I don't understand though how they say it has been the No. 1 show for the last 8 years or so. I thought it was a toss up between Walking Dead and Game of Thrones?

I didn't know Walking Dead and and Game of Thrones were CBS productions. See what I did there?

I feel stupid. Now that you have pointed it out I have gone back and read the article and it makes sense. When I have read stuff like that in the past it has always been in the general context of overall No1, No2 etc so I think my brain picked out the bits it wanted to see. It goes back to a conversation I was having with Paul a couple of weeks ago about AoS being cancelled and LoT being renewed. Just because something is "No1" on one network doesn't necessarily mean it is doing well compared to other series on other networks unless you compared viewing figures. I would love to know what the international viewing figures for GoT are when you consider it is aired in real time. I would like to think it is around 100 million.

Sorry about that General but I felt the need to highlight context.

I'm sure there is a site out there that gives global viewing figures even though that can be skewed somewhat.

e.g.
Is it live viewing?
Does it included streaming?
Are recordings watched later included?
etc.

CBS has renewed Hawaii Five-0 along with a few others, including ;

Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary, MacGyver, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans.

A few in there l like although how many more series they do of that lot must be open to question as there is always a end point for these series and that can't be far way.

I think everything should be included so they get a true picture of who is watching it. As an example, when GoT is on it is live at something like 2am on Sky Atlantic, but people who can't stay up will Sky+ it to watch later and I know it is also downloadable on catchup same day and probably available on the streaming platforms like SkyGo for people to watch on their phone and tablets etc. I would want all of that taken into account because at the end of day, regardless of how it is viewed, they are still real people watching the episode on a platform.
