But that doesn't make any sense. Are you saying that if your job involves any media work you no longer have a right to a private life? Hugh Grant is any actor, he plays characters, a musician makes music while a politician represents their electorate.

Why do these jobs mean forfeiting the right to a private life? If he had used the press to publish private photos of him in order to raise his profile, i.e in the way some talentless z-list celebrities do, then I might see your point but that isn't he case with Hugh Grant.

So where is the hypocrisy?

Re: [Update] The News Corp scandal

Anyway this is the very reason the NOTW and the media in general have used as a justification to illegally hack mobile phones of celebrities and it was only a short step to anyone being a target.

Let's try to stay with that topic shall we instead of arguing News International's excuses for them.

Why? Because we pay their salaries? I spend rather a lot of money in HMV. Does that mean I get the automatic right to know what their staff are doing in their personal lives? Of course not. In a similar vein, we don't get the automatic right to know what any celeb does in their private life.

Regardless of whether a celebrity keeps their private life to themselves or they are releasing new TV series/columns/autobiographies with each intimate detail of their lives, we do not have an automatic right to know everything. Nor do the newspapers have an automatic right to listen to their messages.

Also ridiculous that the decision to try and use the Official Secrets Act in this way was made without consultation with more senior officers, and was made without initial advice from the DPP.

Separately, it emerged that this week US prosecutors at the Department of Justice have written to Murdoch's News Corporation requesting information on alleged payments made to the British police by the News of the World. The DoJ is looking into whether the company may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
Under FCPA laws, American companies are banned from paying representatives of a foreign government to gain a commercial advantage.

So even if the Dowlers don't prosecute in the US there are those who may well pursue the Murdochs through the courts anyway.

I have never believed for one second that the NOTW was the only paper doing this or that NI was the only media group involved either but while the heat is on lets get it all out as much to clear those who didn't as much as to punish those who did. We cannot have a media where there is doubt and suspicion hanging over it so it really is in the best interests of the whole industry to come clean now rather then get caught out later.

Talk about trying it on.

Ruth Neil, of employment law firm Stone Joseph, said that there are "very specific rules" in terms of what an individual whistleblower can claim under the act. Lord Prescott's phone action legal action against the News of the World publishers, News International, is being funded by the former Formula One boss Max Mosley, it emerged today.
The former deputy prime minister said he would not be able to bring the action for alleged phone hacking were it not for Mosley's financial offer.
So anyone without the finances and no access to a rich financier like Mosley is rather stuffed unless they can get public sympathy on their side such as the Dowlers.

You don't get legal aid for civil proceedings and on balance that's a good thing. The nearest we currently have to civil proceedings without the cost is no-win-no-fee arrangements for personal injury and the like - and that system is royally screwing everything up for the majority of us via massive increases in insurance premiums.

I agree but it rather puts the balance in favour of the rich media barons rather than the impoverished or merely strapped for finances Jo Bloggs..Now if the PCC had any clout it wouldn't be necessary for anyone to have to seek litigation to get any kind of apology with or without a bri err cash remuneration.Frankly just seeing a public apology across a newspaper's front page would be all I'd have gone for if I were in the Dowler's place.
Not that I blame them for taking the money.

The real downside to all of this is it seems more likely that the Press will be more heavily regulated. I say this is a downside because inevitably, someone somewhere will find a way to use that regulation to their advantage, and use it to stop the press from reporting on something we need to know.

I'm thinking along the lines of what happened with the Super Injunctions. I read in Private Eye that while the press were going on about various celebrities doing things they shouldn't, then getting super injunctions to stop the press talking about it, a few groups of people were doing something rather more serious, using Super Injunctions to cover what they were doing, and going largely unreported.

So, while I don't normally agree with Conspiracy Theorists, we could end up in a situation where a group of people does something highly illegal, serious and possibly dangerous, yet we don't know about it because the News of the World thought that as part of their obsession with Milly Dowler, that they needed to know everything people were saying to her family.

I too am concerned about a chance of a situation similar to the super injunction fiasco(and thanks to Parliamentary Privilege that it was revealed) if we get a new press regulatory body. That of course can be negated IF it's neutrality is guaranteed by making sure members have no direct or indirect connection with any of the media organisations.

It is when you read this part of the link?

Quote:

Mark Lewis, one of the lawyers acting on behalf of the phone hacking victims, said that just 5% of Mulcaire's victims have so far been notified, and the scandal could go much further into the newspaper industry.

"He was just one agent used by one paper," he told Bloomberg News. "When the final tally takes place, we will see thousands of claims and more than one paper."

Lewis also said that Rupert Murdoch's £20 million contingency fund to deal with the hacking claims was not looking sufficient enough, and even added that claims it will take £100m to clear the cases seem "a serious underestimate".

Ian Hislop made a very good point about the difficulties of providing good investigative journalism and that the methods used maybe considered indefensible by some but when the resulting article reveals murky doings such as corruption then we tend to applaud as a society.

Quote:

The magazine editor also defended the use of subterfuge by media organisations. He argued that while many industry observers were quick to condemn the methods employed by Mazher Mahmood – the "fake sheikh" at the now-defunct News of the World – they applauded the actions of a reporter at Channel 4's Dispatches, who posed as a lobbyist to expose MPs who agreed to be paid for working for a fictional firm. "It's not always the case that form of journalistic grubbiness is inexcusable," Hislop said.
Personally I've heard more about corruption in local government in Private Eye than I have seen or heard in the more well known news outlets.

Disproportionate?Hell they say so..Possibly a term that many might apply to the illegal phone hacking of Millie Dowler's voice mails and the deletions of said voice mails.

They are trying to defend the indefensible by making out they are the victims now.

A third of News Corporation investors voted against James and Lachlan Murdoch being re-elected to the board on Friday, newly released figures show.
Almost 35% voted against James Murdoch, who is the company's deputy chief operating officer, while 34% voted against his brother.
The vote is seen as a rebuke over News Corp's handling of the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World.
News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch received 14% of "no" votes.

The shareholdings of news corp are designed to make it very hard for the Murdochs to lose control of the company. The shareholders may not like this, or the Murdochs, but the company's voting rules are no secret. They knew the way it works when they bought in.

Looks like it is getting deeper and deeper?

Quote:

Phone hacking by News of the World and Sun journalists was known about by senior executives even as it was being denied, new evidence suggests.

News International documents released by a Commons committee say some journalists carried out illegal practices between 2001 and 2003.

But in 2008 the parent company was denying the practice went beyond one "rogue reporter".

One document suggested the position was "fatal to our case".

The evidence from the Commons committee investigating the scandal shows how the News of the World tried to keep the phone hacking case involving Gordon Taylor - the chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association - under wraps.
Quote:

'Illegal inquiries'
The newly released documents also show a leading barrister warned the News of the World on 3 June 2008 that there was a "powerful case that there is (or was) a culture of illegal information access" at the News of the World.

Michael Silverleaf QC said that the allegations would be "extremely damaging to NGN's (News Group Newspapers) public reputation".

He wrote that there was "overwhelming evidence of the involvement of a number of senior NGN journalists" in "illegal enquiries" into an individual whose name is blanked out.

"In addition there is substantial surrounding material about the extent of NGN journalists' attempts to obtain access to information illegally in relation to other individuals," he said.

"In the light of these facts there is a powerful case that there is (or was) a culture of illegal information access used at NGN in order to produce stories for publication."

It seems there are far more victims of phone hacking than previously acknowledged.

Quote:

The number of possible victims of phone hacking by the News of the World private investigator Glenn Mulcaire is now close to 5,800, the Metropolitan police have confirmed.

Quote:

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "It is not possible to give a precise figure about the number of people whose phones have actually been hacked but we can confirm that as of today's date, 3 November 2011, the current number of potentially identifiable persons who appear in the material, and who may therefore be victims, where names are noted, is 5,795. This figure is very likely to be revised in the future as a result of further analysis."

The Observer reported at the weekend that she received £1.7m, and the use of an office and a chauffeur-driven car.

The News of the World (NoW) hired an ex-police officer early last year to carry out surveillance on two prominent lawyers representing victims of phone hacking, BBC Newsnight has learned.

Derek Webb, who ran a private investigations firm called Silent Shadow, covertly followed lawyers Mark Lewis and Charlotte Harris.

Mr Webb also filmed members of Mr Lewis's family on a shopping trip.

News International, owners of the NoW, said it was "deeply inappropriate".

The surveillance of the lawyers, who have been involved in cases against NoW owner News International, took place during the past 18 months when James Murdoch was executive chairman.

As the rabbit hole goes deeper and deeper?

Quote:

Dossier shows NoW surveillance on massive scale

BBC Newsnight has obtained a dossier of evidence from an ex-policeman hired by the News of The World (NoW) which shows the newspaper was engaged in covert surveillance on an industrial scale.

Over eight years Derek Webb was paid to follow more than 90 targets selected by staff at the newspaper.

His targets included Prince William, former attorney general Lord Goldsmith and football pundit Gary Lineker.

Relatives, such as the parents of actor Daniel Radcliffe, were also targeted.
Quote:

Speaking exclusively to Newsnight's Richard Watson, Mr Webb said that shortly after setting up his own private detective agency in 2003 he was contacted by the NoW and offered work.

He continued to work for the newspaper until it was shut down in July after a string of allegations emerged about the hacking of phones, including that of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

"I was working for them extensively on many jobs throughout that time. I never knew when I was going to be required. They phoned me up by the day or by the night... It could be anywhere in the country."

Mr Webb is a former police officer who worked for many years in covert surveillance and received additional training from MI5.

Quote:

Watch Richard Watson's full report in which the names of more News of the World surveillance targets will be revealed on Newsnight at 2230GMT on Tuesday 8 November 2011, then afterwards on the BBC iPlayer and Newsnight website.
