Agreed just hoping its one or the other monthly sub or upfront. The box is an exciting prospect just hope Virgin are sensible.

Hopefully we get a Virgin Media version of this:

Also the US TiVo pricing structure has nothing to do with ours. There your TiVos customer, here VM are TiVos customer. Your not going to be paying TiVo anything.

Now that is good...... I knew I bought my ipad for some reason !!

VM want to increase the ARPU, make the customer feel like they're saving money by spending a little more and they will. If you can get customers to move from L TV to XL by saying that the TiVo monthly fee is waived, great!

I paid £100 "install" and a tenner a month in 2006 when the TV Drive came out and I didn't moan about it, well maybe a little. NTL changed what they did and waived the monthly fee for XL customers, I was happy, NTL were happy I was paying them more for XL TV.

Yes, a price hasn't been set for TiVo but I know from the various people I've talked to who have the VM TiVo box that a monthly fee is quite possible. It's TiVo's business model, absolutely nothing to stop VM absorbing it for XL customers, but that's pure speculation!

To fair, the Sky price of £19.50 does include broadband, where as with VM it does cost extra.

Most wouldn't be opposed to a monthly fee for TIVO if there was no upfront cost , but to charge both would be a step to far for a box that's never yours.

Just to clarify their free broadband has a 2Gb per month cap. Also you don't get it with just the tv package you also have to take their phone package. Lastly not all Sky customers can get it. It depends whether Sky have upgraded the local exchange. So £19.50 doesn't include broadband.

as indie said they won't charge you for the box.
they will call it a install fee then charge monthly for it
as they do with current boxes £49 + £5 pm for 2nd box

have a look at this http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/...-videogames-tv

Ginx is set to launch with at least four shows in late November. It'll be on Virgin and Sky, and there's a chance that it may be broadcast in HD at launch. Later on the channel may explore 3D, too.

Sky1 or if Sky hands back the rights to TNA it may end up with Extreme Sport (They got the TNA PPVs right now) or ESPN (As ESPN2 is rumoured to be set to launch in 2011).

But I have try ''TNA on UK Telly'' with Google but I cant find any news on the TNA rights.

We hadn't watched anything on Bravo for a couple of years and I had removed it from our Favourites. I was going to add it back when I heard that "Hawaii Five-O" was coming but then heard that Bravo would likely be dropped by Sky. :(

You said the 1TB Sky+HD box was £249 up front but there's no monthly sub for the box - without a monthly sub you have a very expensive non-DVR FTA HD box.

The vast majority of Virgin Media subscribers don't take Sky premium HD, they don't need to take Sky premium HD to get a low cost V+ HD box. With Sky the so-called 'free' HD box you refer to requires a monthly HD subscription on top of your basic TV package.

TiVo is a premium service, there is no comparable offering available in the UK and even with an additional monthly sub it would still be competitively priced with a certain inferior rival pay tv service which charges up to £250 for a 1TB box, extra for HD and ESPN, requires additional services for its AnyTime+ progressive download offering and then caps usage to a few hours per month for those with the basic broadband bundle.

Did a lot of research last night and I'm willing to eat humble pie TIVO does look a great service and I can see why they have a monthly charge that said I do still think Virgin have to be sensible on this say a five or so to XL and VIP. Will the VM TIVO include TIVO Desktop and iPad and mobile apps ?

I think the sticking point for that (fantastically useful) app over here is that in the US TiVO are the ones suppling all the guide data to the boxes - that's what the monthly subscription is for. Over here that's VMs job, so it would have to be VM suppling/supporting the app. Now, weather the middleware deal with TiVo extends to TiVo's applications is something we don't know.

So would VM just be able to re-brand the app and supply the feed for it or would it need to start from scratch? We don't even know if it's technically feasible on the box we're getting. I suppose we just have to wait for an announcement.

Expect these "extra" features is what you will pay for, I expect the basic Tivo UI (with TV related Internet content access) and 1Tb storage will be the V+ replacement in effect as per current payment terms, anything else above that I suspect will be a fee for which we wait details.

Personally I don't think they will be charging for the new features, the extras are the thing that will sell the services to new customers and minimise churn, the "icing and the cake" if you will.

I hope so and hope it's a flexible interface to allow playlist creation and can carry over information from a current Spotify subscription; the Sony 370 BR player does that with a current YouTube subscription.

Was the 'export recording' feature (think its $30 on TiVo's site) mentioned? Would be a shame if it wasn't included but I imagine content providers would be happier without it.

Oddly enough, I find that when my wife puts subtitles on because she can't hear or can't understand the accents (I'm way more hip with the Californian jive or even the stuff they come out with in New Tricks), I lose the plot trying to follow the on-screen dialogue because I can't tune into the sound. You know that your senses adapt so that your hearing improves shortly after you turn the lights out at night but that's when you hear the scary things! So it's the same thing in reverse: processing subtitles takes away from the text processing and sound processing part of the brain at the same time!

Would it be possible to post which channels Virgin are still in talks for?

Universal channel is already on virgin, MB is talking about the HD channel which Sky already carry.

No news on ABC & CBS on Demand joining Virgin soon (As far as I know).

But I do know that Channel One Player and Bravo Player will both end on January 3rd 2011.

I'm surprised they are still on VOD since Sky have the channels now.

I thought ongoing access to on demand content was part of the deal when VMtv was sold to Sky.

I would take a guess and say either December or early next year.

It does say in the press release that OD content from the previous VMtv and Sky's basic channels will become available. Coming soon perhaps, VM's favourite phrase!!

It will be added... the removal of TV Choice Option from lower packs was the first step. ;)

Still no word on pricing. At best it may be available to order towards the end of December, but cant see many or perhaps any installs of the service to occur this side of Xmas, as from what I've heard those on the initial staff rollout wont even be getting it until around the middle of the month at the earliest.

Agree the current EPG software (middleware) is dire and needs to die a painful death. Yes, I like the BT service too. Even the EPGs on cheap Freeview boxes are superior to VM's.

Whether this new VM middleware is better than the old is yet to be proven. It looks nice, yes, despite the red colouring, but how does it work outside of the lab? Can you change a channel quickly or, go and make a cup of tea while waiting for the channel to change, like the current software? The fact this uses flash gives me concerns. I've yet to find anything with flash that I would call quick, but just hope that is not the case this time round.

Actually I'd like it to die a quick and sudden death. A painful death suggests it will take forever for us all to get the new Tivo UI! :p

There's been at least 1 software update for the Premiere which improves performance since then. Again, different hardware to the VM box but something to consider.

I wonder, is there any word about what Internet Content Sources will be available on launch for VM Tivo? If any?

I assume that YouTube will make an appearance, at some point, it certainly has on my Samsung TV and WDTV Live player and other network connected A/V devices.

But what about the likes of Lovefilm? Or any other sources?

Hasn't Spotify already been mentioned, Lovefilm is a nice idea but if the video quality of the PS3/Online content is anything to go by then it like watching a VHS, useless. :td:
