There's already 12, so 20 would be extremely low considering there are 10 Sky Movie HD channels alone, add to that 2 Sports, then ESPNA, Five, Film 4 HD, and you're looking at 15 more. There's also the possibility of the Basics HD, which is another 4, so that'd take it to 41 in total.

Did you notice the text I quoted in bold?

muppetman11 asked how many HD channels Virgin would have, I quoted and linked to an article which suggests that Virgin will have another 17 HD channels once the Sky HD channels are added. That would be a total of 29 HD channels, which is more or less what Virgin suggested they would have around now.

That's not including Film 4 HD, the forthcoming BBC 1 HD, and probably Five HD.

Lets be fair to them, they don't say anything that isn't true or that we have not heard on the grapevien already. It states what HD Sports channels are coming and I am guessing that we will not get all interactive features from day one.

The text under the available channels says "SS3 and SS4 not available in high definition on Virgin". The fact that SSN HD isn't mentioned here gives me slight hope on that one. May just mean VM haven't agreed a deal for it yet, rather than it's being witheld by Sky.

Erm....Why? Should Tesco be made to sell their own brand items to Sainsbury if Sainsbury are willing to pay for them??? I'm sure if Virgin offered the correct amount, then SKY would gladly sell it to them.

However, Sky have to be allowed to have some 'exclusivity' as with regards what it 'has' to offer. Its called business.

Personally, even though I benefit from being a SS subcriber through Virgin and will take the SS1 & 2 HD offering as well, I think it was wrong that SKY were made to lower it's wholesale price of it's HD SS 1&2 service. Sky buy the rights to the sporting events by the normal tendering process, and therefore should be allowed to sell at a price that it sees as 'business sense' value to them.

Put it this way, how would anyone like some big organisation telling them how much they have to sell their car for?

But thats business. IF another company wants the rights but they don't have enough dosh to bid a reasonable amount , they either enter into the bidding with other broadcast companies and share the coverage, or they 'woo' backers to put up the money and they all get a return of the advertising revenue.

All those like myself that are awaiting sky sports interactive (Red button) i emailed vm this morning and asked them about it they emailed me back surprisingly quick,considering its a saturday, and interactive is not due to launch until 2011 (although they did say the delay was not their fault).

I on this instance would like to say i was pleasantly surprised by the speed of response to the email well done virgin.:)

I am quite happy now waiting knowing its definately on its way.

Personal response or automated though ?? Lots of response emails are not 'human' produced but are generated responses by looking at keywords in the original email and thereby sending out what appears to be a personal response.

If not an automated, I'm surprised by the 2011 launch of interactive as was led to believe that Virgin had already said that some would be available at launch....however, I may have made that bit up !!!

Football First will be in HD from the start of the new season.

This will apply to both the Game of the Day at 8.25pm and the Match Choice at 10.15pm.

Let's put it one way BT were told they had to open up to other companies , Royal Mail were made to open their business up also , both companies had invested millions in there network. So weak argument. Sky don't have problems in using LLU to deliver their broadband something BT were made to allow.

We are going off topic here, but you are comparing chalk with cheese.

BT were originally a monopoly, the only provider....but then the market was opened to other competitors to be allowed to offer services where they couldn't before and this was the same with Royal Mail, they were not made to offer their services to other competitors. Sky do NOT have a monopoly...they tendered for the rights as could the BBC, ITV, and any other broadcaster. Your comparison just sank I'm afraid.

Media Boy EXCLUSIVE:

Five HD will be on Virgin Media by ''End of August''.

I have just found out that Virgin Media plan to launch Sky Sports and Movies HD on the 2nd August with possibly pre ordering from the 19th July.

There will be an extra charge for this service but still no prices as yet.

Might be worth waiting just a couple more weeks just to see if there are extra charges for those on TV XL and VIP customers.

Myself i wll not be paying to duplicate channels such as sport which i already take i will make do with sd and V+ upscaling on sports as HD to me simply is not worth an extra charge.

Yes its annoying but I think you can only complain if there is a price rise for any extra standard HD channels.

I didn't expect the premium HD channels to be included in the 'No Extra Fee' advertising campaign so this news if true comes as no surprise.

Well, we know Sky are charging VM an 'incremental wholesale charge', I wonder if the charge increments depending on what pack you're on?

Just as an example (and I stress this is based on purely guesswork on my part):

Sky Premium HD charge (per month):

XL: £5
L: £7
M+ £10

You know what will probably happen next, don't you?

Sky will scrap their HD charge, raise the prices of their packs to compensate for the lost income and then scream from the rooftops: "HD is FREE on Sky, those guys at Virgin will charge you extra!"

Yes see my posting 1125! i emailed vm yesterday and in a reply they stated Red Button interactive on sky sports will launch in 2011 although in their reply they stated it was not their fault. Make of that what you will.

So looks like interactive will be here sometime in 2011.;)

Without the red button on Vm, there is no point in getting Sky Sports, as with Football First, you have to go via the red button. But there again VM never advise you of these things when you go in for it.

Obviously not official yet, but don't expect Media Boy info to be incorrect....but its not full info on the possible charging structure....if there is indeed one.

However as I believe I may have alluded to previously, I never expected something for nothing, after all, Virgin will have to pay for taking the HD elements of SSPts and SMvies, and it makes commercial sense to make to charge. I am only interested in SSp HD and will take it even if there is a charge. But I don't think there will be a charge under certain circumstances.

I really don't like specualting or second guessing what a company will do, but I largely think (probably talking tosh as usual....)

1) XL TV already taking SS - No Charge for SS HD
2) XL TV Current No Sub to SS - New SS Sub but no HD - a lower price than current * If taking a new SS + HD, perhaps the equiv price as above + £2 or £3 (but costed not less than scenario 1

Packages other than XL - perhaps slapping a £5 premium to those taking the HD element of SS/SM

I personally don't think the lack of a red button is reason NOT to get Sky Sports....it doesn't survive on just red button activity :)

There is always the possibility that SKY could make available the separate feeds for all the matches to Virgin who then allocate them to individual positions on the EPG until red button is available.

Sky have absolutely no record in the past at of feeding red button matches to vms sky sports subscribers! via serparate feeds. Why would they start now.

Many is the time despite being a sky sports subscriber on vm, i have started watching a cricket match including one this season featuring my local team only to be told coverage will continue on our "interactive service " bl--dy marvellous i thought.:mad:

I cancelled sky sports immediately after this debacle only to re-subscribe with the promise of "red Button" interactive on the way.

I am not interested very much in the football so i pay £20 a month mainly for the cricket not to pay through the nose and have it denied to me,any more of that i will cancel for sure and stick to radio only coverage on radio five live for England Matches and local bbc stations who cover my county cricket team matches,and sky sports can do one.

Maybe Virgin needs to improve the Red Button service (maybe even working on the same day as you press the button?!) before it can offer Sky Sports Red button services? If so then maybe they will do this with TiVo, hence 2011?
I don't agree that it is essential to have Red button services to enjoy Sky Sports. Aside from Football First and early matches in the Champions League, the services on it are at best a distraction and hardly essential.

I also have seen an advert which states vm will not have an interactive service for sky sports until 2011 on the sky website,they are hardly going to use an advert to gain advantage over vm are they ie interactivity, and then start supplying as extra feeds to vm that which they are saying the advantage is! now are they?:shocked:.

The real reason Red Button is being made available is 1) the ofcom deal. and 2) the selling of vms channels to sky which also has a cluase i believe about vm getting access to sky sports interactive not out of the goodness of skys heart.;)

Whilst in essence i agree with some parts of your post to start watching my local county cricket team Essex on sky sports earlier in the season and then have it switch after 90 mins play to Red Button was a bit of a p-sser,it meant i could not watch my teams match and yet i thought i was paying to watch them.

With Football which is what most people watch at least sky show all i think of the englsh team matches on sky sports channels in the champions league only the foreign matches tend to be on interactive.

But overall i do see your point.:)

If I have to pay an extra charge for SKY Sports and SKY Movies HD I won't be too happy. Once a simulcast HD version of a channel has been launched I never watch the SD version. I haven't once watched a programme on STV, Channel 4 or E4 since the HD versions came along.

What I can't understand is why you should have to pay for 2 versions of the same channel. Once the HD Movie channels launch I'll never watch any of the SD versions, same goes for SKY Sports 1 & 2. Why should I pay to receive channels I'll never watch in order to receive the HD version?

I wouldn't mind paying for the HD versions if I could drop the SD versions from my subscription, and save some money.

M & L packs have just had reductions on there SkySports subs, but XL hasn't I wont be happy if being an XL cust means I didn't save anything and have to pay more for HD simulcast versions of channels I already have.

There has been so much rumour and speculation over all of this that now its getting ridiculous. Media boy said there would be some charge, not necessarily for xl or vip customers, but who knows? To be honest sky subscribers are no wiser either, with their forums talking about the £10 fee to be waived in certain circumstances. Lets just be patient, TBH if your a virgin customer you have to be!! but come on lets get the more important things into perspective like when will LUXE hd launch for godsake!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

That would be an ideal situation and something I would definitely be up for.:)

If SS HD 1&2 are now purely simulcasts of the SD channels, I want to pay for just the HD feed as that is what I will be watch every time Wether virgin would be allowed to offer just the HD broadcasts to those that wanted them and if that would be viable or permissable from SKY under the contracts between them who knows.

I had a phone call off them,Offered me sky world for 12 months half price and waivered the £10 hd charge,If you think about i it costs £27.50 for sports and movies with VM currently only sd.And the cost for the discounted sky is £24.25 and that would include HD movies and Sports(also 3+4HD)I cancelled the sports and movies with vm and save 3.25 per month and have the best of both worlds and cheaper.

I couldn't agree more, as prices have gone down over the months for other packages VIP prices have gone up, VM's top package is looking less and less attractive.
On a personal note if their is a price increase for HD movies and sport on the VIP package I'll certainly be downgrading, we are already paying £93pm, even if VM say they are "only" charging £5pm that'll push the package to almost a hundred pounds a month...
Also Sky may well charge a £10 monthly fee for their HD channels, but remember thats not just for movies and sport its for over forty HD channels.
On the whole I'm very happy with VM and have been on the VIP pack for over two years now, but any attempt to put the VIP bill up to £100pm will be to much for me.

But part of that cost - ie SS and SM ,ie SKY's premium channels - is in essence driven by SKYs wholesale price to Virgin....so is not really Virgins cost to you.

When with Sky, I took the whole package except movies but plus HD and I was happy enough paying approx £60pm. Due to circumstance, am nos with Virgin XL +SS sub (V+HD) and all in with the phone and BB pay on average £90 pm. Im happy with that, and will take SS HD...and as I'm someone who doesn't expect something for nothing, i fully expect to pay a few pounds for the feed of SS HD.

Whatever Virgin do, they will never please everyone.

Perhaps not what some folks want to hear, but if your not happy, or you think it is not good value...look elsewhere for another provider. At the end of the day, be it Virgin, Sky BT or any other providers out there, they will charge what fits their business model...and no amount of chat on any forum with regard to ending subs or downgrading will have any effect....its real actions that will count...and personally, I have no doubt that the majority will either keep their current subs or upgrade them. It will be a very small, and ultimately tiny minority that will feel aggrieved enough to downgrade (why would anyone do that??) or leave Virgin.

We all could say VM Broadband better than Sky and that each of the packages have there own perks like VM massive On Demand options like Movies, Music SD/HD On Demand - which is better than Sky and then you can say Sky have more HD channels.

So if you want to pay an extra £14.50 because you think VIP is not worth the money then so be it.

Stop trying to compare HD channels between Sky and VM, compare the packages you get - Sky HD offering - how many of us would/do watch all the HD channels on offer.

Some of us have contacts within VM and can get inside info and I firmly believe VM are trying to provide a quality service not quaintly

I downgraded from the VIP pack last month (I've had it since inception) for a short time as after totting it all up including VirginMobile I was paying nearly £150 all in all. But....

....as Bigred said - you won't get it cheaper than VM. I also worked it out that it's more expensive going with Sky than VM. It's nice to have the extra HD channels with Sky I imagine but I place far more value on the VOD and catch-up service.

I am missing my 20Mb BB though, I just can't be doing with this 10Mb :td:

How much is this VIP pack for an existing customer like myself. I currently have XL TV with Sky Sports, V+ Box, 1 Additional V+ box. 10 Mb broadband and phone free weekend and evening calls.

It is VERY unlikely that a move to VIP would give you value for money.

The monthly charge for VIP with 2 V+s is £99.50!

The charging for V+ within VIP is different from that outwith VIP.

Since you have acquired your V+s outwith VIP, moving to VIP would be costly and you would not see the benefit of what you paid upfront for installation/setup/HD activation for your V+s.

Thanks Media Boy. And yes I will stay on XL - Phoned Virgin Media up - Told a white lie and said $ky phoned up saying if I join them I will get Sky Sports free for 12 months. I got £7 knocked off my bill.

This is good incase Sky do make us pay for the HD premium channels.

Makes there we don't charge for HD a joke and paying over a fiver for channels you already have in SD seems excessive. No reward for XL customers or VIP , don't forget the news that your V+ you forked out for won't take Tivo software but the VHD box will well thought out Virgin.

What other firm would bring a V+ (Samsung) that won't run the latest Tivo software. Thanks for your loyalty but your box will still have the same crummy epg while our VHD boxes may get new software , but you can fork even more out for our brand new Tivo box. Loyalty counts for nowt.

Neither V+HD box has ever been sold on the basis of it being anything more than it is

As we don't yet know Virgin's plans for the TiVo box or platform getting irate because the V+HD STB that you have which makes no mention of TiVo, may not do TiVo is self defeating
