Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
10 meg is brilliant and very stable I can't fault it at all, but I am the olny virgin broardband user in my street, perhaps that increases reliability.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I finally got upgraded to 10 meg at the weekend, but using the speedtest at the top of the page I never get above about 5.2 meg. I have rebooted the modem several times ( NTL 120 ). Are there any other checks I can do before phoning Virgin?

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Anyone in Leicester had an upgrade yet?
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Have in Melton Mowbray,Area 30 not sure if under Leicester or Nottingham though
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I'm in area 30, although no sign of the upgrade so far
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I'm sure everyone is just fascinated by my travails with this upgrade so here's an update:
Upgraded here in NG7 as of yesterday. I guess I should have counted 24 working hours rather than expecting it to be done on a weekend or Bank Holiday. One problemo - only achieving speeds of 3.3mb max. It turns out the NTL Home 100 modem won't support 10mb (despite VM website saying the modem was fine for 10mb when I registered). A nice man called Abi (sp?) in India said he'd get a new one sent to me pronto, free of charge. :tu: |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
i`m not even sure if i`m getting the 10mb i should be or not and i dont even know how to check

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
grrr the timetable page has been updated and Leicester seems to be pushed further and further back! :(
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
At a guess Leicester might have been delayed because of the Analogue TV upgrade work

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Update:
Having been told my Ambit 100 modem couldn't cope with 10mb VM promised to send another within five working days. That new modem didn't arrive so I phoned CS again who said it "Couldn't be received" and they would send another one. That arrived four days later. It's an Ambit 256. It's now all connected and I've gone through the whole set-up process but still only getting speeds of 3.3mb max. Anyone know if Nottingham 3 UBR is massively oversubscribed or anything or does the 10mb take a while to cut in? Just as an aside it seems that the first replacement modem probably never arrived as UPS wanted someone to accept it. Handily the second one was dropped off with my next door neighbours who kindly looked after it for the day while I was at work (despite the fact that I barely know them). How is anyone who works full-time and lives on his own ever supposed to be around to receive a package delivered on an unspecified weekday during the working day? I asked originally if it could be sent to my work address but VM said they couldn't do that. Just seems a bit archaic in this age of increasing numbers of people living on their own. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Almost exactly the same thing happened to me reagarding the spped pf the new modem.. I couldn't get it to work at any speed, so after a couple of hours on the phone with them, I gave up and went back to my old modem, and now getting around 5mb. Have to be satisfied with that, I suppose.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
On the advice of the geek that supplied my wireless router I speed tested the pc hard wired and got speeds of 9.8mb. So at least the issue has been pinpointed, if not yet solved - presumably a problem either with the router itself or interference on the signal.
Soz for boring you all. |

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Ugh, sales speak. 'in the next few months' doesn't sound too optimistic for getting all of this dusted by end of October, sounds more like this will still be being done at the end of this year.
Has taken them long enough to do this so far, and according to that sales blurb above they still have ~2 million customers to move. Extracts the urine a bit that they've spent this long doing this given the fanfare though I know plenty of areas were struggling for capacity post-uplift. I think between the 50M rollout and the capacity upgrades on the legacy network for this the engineers have had a busy summer! |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
i live in bulwell nottingham and im still on 2mb. I have rang virgin 5 times asking them to sort this out. My maximum download speed is 270kbs. It starts on really fast then drops instantly. Do you think this might be my modem? I have a black virgin modem.
Virgin are coming round next saturday, they better sort it out this time otherwise im getting rid. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Has Nottingham become eligible for the upgrade yet?
Downloads starting really fast is quite normal, then they drop to that 240kB/s or so which is appropriate for 2Mbit. I understood Nottingham was a 'to be confirmed' area according to the most recent information posted on the website. I do understand your frustration though, having sunshine blown up your arse for months on end about an upgrade you don't have yet will grate just a bit. |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
AFAIK Bulwell comes under the Basford UBR so should be upgraded already
---------- Post added at 17:45 ---------- Previous post was at 17:44 ---------- Could be an account fault, this seems to be an issue in some ex-ntl areas of which Bulwell is one |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
thanks for the replys guys. its just crazy, they have done tests while ive been on the phone etc and told me to reset my modem etc. Then they upgraded me as if i was paying for the upgrade and thats not made any difference.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
All BB M modem customers in areas 01-18 (ex-telewest) should now be on 10Mbit
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I see they've now removed the timetable page. I'm guessing Leicester will be even later now! So much for registering early!
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
They've removed the registration page but they are doing the mass upgrades as I said.
Areas 20-31 upgrades (ex-ntl) for everyone - including those that didn't register - started today |

After I was told they wouldn't I spent hours talking around my friend. Convincing him that it wasn't a dastardly plot to get more money out of him and that VM did, once in a while, give us something for nothing. :banghead: :D |

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
It said 'we've already completely the uplift for the Knowsley platform' ;)
|
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
This would explain the increase in complaints about capacity on Knowsley and why there's a resegmentation list as long as a Des O'Connor concert on there. :)
For the curious a while ago after merger a list of ports in need of resegmentation was produced for Knowsley, Langley and Bromley. Knowsley's initial estimate got laughed out of the place and they ended up doing 4 times as many capacity upgrades to resolve issues as they originally mooted. Telewest's idea of 'capacity planning' was somewhat 'interesting' and their idea of how to add capacity a bit of a bodge so as ntl:Telewest / VM were unravelling the mess it became clear more and more work needed to be done. Ex-ntl's planning guidelines were more conservative and rather than the bodges they tended to pull the fibre and do the resegmentation instead. More scalable and permanent solution and also good for network health though far more time consuming and expensive. This meant, and it looks like it means that they take longer to deliver tier uplifts but they do it with less complaints ;) |
Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Virgin came roiund today and the man could not rectify the problem.
He cannot understand why im still only on 2mb. He said he was going to speak to his boss. They have 1 more week, if it isnt sorted im cancelling my contract. |

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
hmm according to my modem config it looks like Leicester (LE3) finally got upgraded (for me at least)...
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10242000 Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 514000 shame it looks a bit slow for 10mb? https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/10/30.png http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/%3...2009/10/30.png |

I've just been upgraded from 2 to 10 meg. I was browsing CF, a page wouldn't load, re-booted the modem, and Bob's your uncle!

At long last after many months of emails back and fore, I now have a download speed of just under 10mbs. I have been checking weekly on the speed test website, and was geting just over 5mbs. But today, I checked and got 9.72 mbs and that's with the 120 modem despite them telling my that I had to install the new modem they sent me! :):)

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Re my last post, I connected my netbook on a wireless connection and got 11.61mbs on the speed test.:):):)
